Belated post. Did this hike with Chris a few weeks ago. I had just been in Tucson a few days earlier when Chris proposed this trail. I always love doing a new trail and it had been a while since I had hiked with Chris so back down to Tucson I went. I was suppose to meet Chris at the TH, but bad weather the previous night had shut down the road at the base of the mountains, unless you had 4 wheel drive. Chris was kind enough to wait for me at the blockade and drove us up the completely dry roads to the TH. :?

Chris had chosen Bug Springs because it is an alternate route for the AZ Trail. He had previously done all of Passage 10 and wanted to pick up this trail where it departs from that segment. We spent a little bit of time walking around Gordon Hirabayashi Campground trying to figure out how these two trails came together. As a “trail completist”, I can totally respect that. The connection was unsigned, but it was obvious that the spur trail was the connector between the two passages.

The Bug Springs Trail itself, was easy to follow. It involved some moderate climbing to start out with, before going along and ridge with some neat rock formations and then dropping down into a canyon. There were some nice views along the saddle, though you still had higher mountains around in most directions. The canyon was a nice surprise. Shaded in pines with a relatively smooth and flat track to follow. This lasted for about a mile before climbing to a saddle which led to a steep descent to the Green Mountain TH.

Nice hike with a nice array of scenery. It surprisingly seemed to be a popular bike trail. The ascent from the Green Mountain TH is steep and not many bikers are biking up that, but after that, it is more down than up. Encountered 11 bikers and 9 hikers. No wildlife. Great catching up with Chris and checking out a new trail!

The Bug Springs Trail is part of the AZT Passage 11E, Pusch Ridge Wilderness Bypass. This is for the bikers who aren't allowed to ride through the wilderness area of AZT11. It's also strongly recommended for equestrians, although sections of this trail that Brian and I did had us wondering if this is really a good alternative for horses. AZT11E is a series of existing trails on the east side of the Catalina Highway along with Green Mountain, Butterfly, etc, up to Summerhaven. There are several trailheads along the way on the highway, so it's pretty easy to break this one up into several reasonable dayhikes, rather than the full day deathmarches you have to do with shuttles.

Brian was the only taker I could get on this one, just doing an out and back from the Gordon Hirabayashi CG. Brian was planning to overnight camp after we finished and hike AZT10 the next day, so we both drove to meet there. I was ahead and when I got to the Catalina Highway, there were 3 police cars there checking to make sure everyone had 4WD because there was some snowfall and ice formed overnight. I was good, but I knew Brian was not. I waited for him to arrive and took him up after he parked on the side of the road.

It was only 1600' AEG one way up to the General Hitchcock CG where this trail ends, but it seemed like more. It's steep at first, then a big drop and a mile or so of shady and level through the pines by a stream. then one more gradual climb followed by a steep drop in a half mile to the end, which then turns into a steep climb right back up. We did about 2500' AEG for the day, but 2300' of that was in the first 6 miles (out of 10.5).

Most of the best views were to the west, probably because the sun was lighting that up nicer than the Rincons and Mica Mountain to the east. Got a nice view of Rincon Peak early on poking through a flat cloud.

Weather stayed cool all day, pretty chilly at the start, but we warmed up fast in the sun and from the climb. Not too many hikers, saw probably equal amounts hikers and bikers. No wildlife spotted, other than one couple's 3 little dogs that barked and snarled. Nice views on this trail, but the drive in from I-10 across Tucson is still a slog.

I did this hike a few years back and I can remember thinking; I don't want to do this trail again, the climb out of Bear Canyon is really steep. I also was not that impressed with the hike itself either. Ginny and I decided to do this hike since it is the one section of AZ Trail in Mount Lemmon we have not done. Not sure what is different from the last time I hiked it but it is a rather scenic trail, great views to the South and West. Could be that the weather with an intermittent cloud cover, cool temps, company that made the difference. The climb out of Bear Canyon and a short climb out of an unnamed canyon are still steep though. I think the person who laid out the route drew a straight line from where they were at to where they wanted to go and laid the trail out along that line. Almost like the trail follows an old jeep trail that heads straight up the hill. I actually think the going down was worse than the going up. We hiked to the General Hitchcock Camp ground where we took our lunch break. We shared our lunch break with a bunch of Mexican Jays and a red headed wood pecker.

Lots of hikers on the trail but it's Saturday on Mount Lemmon so doesn't surprise me. This trail is heavily used by Mountain bikers and we saw quite a few. Only one that was into going really fast and nearly ran us over, the others seemed more aware that there are hikers on the trail and they were very courteous. Ran into a patch of snow/ice along the trail in the unnamed canyon, kind of surprised me since there has not been much rain here. Only water we saw was in crevice in a rock along the first stream crossing, maybe a gallon in the pool, sure every animal within a mile knows about it.

Really enjoyed this hike but once again I don't think I'll do it again. Might take a short hike up the canyon where bug Spring is, looked kind of interesting from the ridge above.

What a wonderful hike! I didn't think it was such a workout until we got to the steep areas. Being vertically challenged made some of the step ups and downs kind of tough. It was lovely out and we made it over to the General Hitchcock picnic area for our break. The Mexican Jays were glad to see us and pleased to share our apple core, crackers, and peanuts. There was also a red headed woodpecker who wanted in on the action but was very shy. We saw several other hikers plus lots of bicyclist. Last year I got Mark a new Garmin and it has SOS capabilities. I had been thinking I hoped he didn't have to use it for me if a bicycle takes me out coming around a corner. Not too far ahead after that thought a guy came around the bend going fast. Dust flew up from him skidding sideways to stop in front of me. I wanted to tell him he was my greatest fear on this hike. I am happy he was able to stop and did not run into me. We don't typically hike on Saturdays. It is a lot more crowded. It did turn out to be a workout for sure. The weather was perfect. We are hoping to get more hiking in before the end of the month. Praying we do get some rain this week though. It is extremely dry. The trail condition was good. Beautiful and diverse areas to see. Enjoyed Texas Roadhouse after we finished our hike.

Hiked to my happy spot, which sadly appears to have been enjoyed recently by campers with less than stellar backcountry ethics (absurdly overbuilt fire ring, enormous barkaloungers, paths, etc).

I was serenaded at the upper trailhead by a chorus of chainsaws, as the Forest service was engaged in thinning operations between upper Bug Springs and the campground.

Still a fun hike with a happy creek, a wee waterfall, and a lovely wood. Other than saw-totin’ fire crews in the first quarter mile, I saw no one.

Only had time for a moderate hike today and Bug Spring didn’t involve a long drive.

Checked out my waterfall spot but no waterfall today. There were however a few stagnant, smelly pools with lots of flies.

Lovely cool weather. I actually put on my puffy in the canyon section when I stopped for lunch.

Seemed pretty busy for a Friday afternoon. More hikers than bikers, too.

Originally planned a big group hiking from Mt. Lemmon to Sabino Canyon, but most of those wanting to do it canceled, so I chose this instead. I had Green Mountain on my bucket list for a while as one of Warren's 100 Classic Arizona Hikes, and honestly you can do a full Lemmon to the bottom hike through the trail system that is fairly close to Mt. Lemmon Highway (Aspen-Marshall Gulch-Sunset-Butterfly-Kellogg-Incinerator Ridge-Green-Bug Spring-Bug Spring Connector-Soldier, or instead of Soldier, -Sycamore Canyon-Bear Canyon to Sabino).

We decided to start at Bigelow Trailhead and took Bigelow to Kellogg, then Incinerator Ridge to Green to Bug Spring to Bug Spring Trailhead. We started out in the lower 50s and ended up around 90 degrees. On the way down we hit Leopold Point and the basically nonexistent trail up to Green Mountain Summit.

Loved the wildlife today. On the drive up Lemmon Highway I saw a gila monster on the side of the road. At the Bigelow Trailhead there were a couple of mule deer, and on the trail we ran into several bluejays, a couple of horned toads, a hummingbird (surprised to see that one buzzing around!) and several different kinds of squirrels, including one with long, furry ears.

One of our team had to pull off at the little parking turnoff across the road from Bear Canyon picnic area, but the other two of us made it to the bottom.

Only had about a half hour to get some exercise so I just went to the first high point I came across, enjoyed the late afternoon view, and went back down.

Wifey asked to train for a backpacking trip we are undertaking in February. I had fantasies of the idyllic forested canyon stretch of Bug Springs, complete with a hidden waterfall, so thought it would be a great stroll with some nice places to set up hammocks and read. There might even be snow!

In my enthusiasm for this, however, I neglected the minor issue of 400' of elevation gain in the first half mile... and the fact that all that gain is lost descending into the idyllic forested canyon and must be done again on the way back... and the fact that my poor wife hasn't been able to get much exercise in over a year and was woefully unprepared for what awaited her.

So basically I subjected her to a brutal, murderous slog (twice), and I wound up carrying both of our packs on the way out. Sorry, love! She was a trooper and we did enjoy hanging out at the waterfall.

Drove to Upper Green Mountain TH to do Guthrie Mountain as the fire closure order excluded it from the closure, but when arriving found a trail closed sign with the order (not listing Green Mountain Trail) attached. 🙄 Drove up to Palisades to talk to a ranger about it, and the sign there says “closed until further notice.” Ugh.

Backtracked down the mountain looking for something open, stopped at Lower Green Mountain TH and hiked Bug Springs. Didn’t do the entire trail, just went a little over two miles in and turned around do to time.

things are slowly reopening.

bug springs was totally unaffected by the fire. so it remains a great trail. it is going to get overused for sure though. parking was an issue and on a trail where i normally see 0-5 people, i saw probably 50-60 including a ton of (nice and courteous) mountain bikers

still nice to be back. what happened here is a lot for me to try and wrap my head around

Perfect day for a hike. Overcast and in the 60's up on Mt. Lemmon early this morning. Doing another social hike with the guys from S.A.R.A.

Went downhill on the trail at a leisurely pace while I was regaled with tales of the various rescues up on Mt. Lemmon. Turning into one of the highlights of my week, these guys have 100's of years of trail knowledge and experience around Tucson between them all.

Parked at the Bug Springs TH and hiked to San Pedro Vista and back (stats guesstimated from fricknaley's triplog last year).

I was worried about the heat because there was no breeze and a lot of sun exposure on the way up, but thankfully it wasn't too bad and I had just enough water. I'm glad to have gotten on both of these trails for the first time. Bug Springs is fantastic (if you don't mind some uphill in both directions), and Green Mountain isn't too shabby either (great views of the northeast Catalinas down into San Pedro valley). I'll be sure to come back for Green/Guthrie summits sometime this summer and Bug Springs when it's cooler.

Biked down the highway from the top then hiked NOBO from the Gordon H campground. Excellent climb on quality trails that's just as rugged, scenic and enjoyable as the regular passage. Great views throughout and very green at the higher elevations.

parked at the sycamore reservoir trailead at Hirabayshi and made my way up bug springs and green mountain trails to the san pedro vista. ended up being a pretty difficult route

fair amount of traffic for these trails, but certainly not heavy. there are maybe 3 downed trees on green mountain? it had been a while since i was on the upper green mountain trail.

one little patch of snow left up near the top

got pretty warm down low. thankful for the forgiving breeze
