You'll need to work for this summit, which is one of the best in the Mazzies, hands down. It isn't boring Ord, it's more difficult than both Catherine and Peeley. Not sure about Mazatzal Peak yet, as I'll hold my opinion until sometime next week. And there's no silly register at the top. Just Ladybugs and one giant bear turd. :-k The Pine Creek Loop and lower Ballantine Trails are 90% burnt. It'll be decades before this area returns to what it once was. The Pipeline Trail is becoming more obscure but still there's evidence of some badass fat tire motorcyclist utilizing it. No water anywhere, but that was expected this time of year. Just right of A-Frame (east of the southern prow) of Whorled Wall is the most direct route to the summit. It's loose in the first third but surprisingly solid through the upper two thirds. There's a huge dead Agave stalk marking the top out. Yeah, it'll eventually fall over but there are several more Agaves growing in the same place that may continue to mark the route.

Saw the recent triplogs posted for the area by @trekkin_gecko and @johnlp so decided to check out this loop using the Pipeline Trail.

Parked in Round Valley. There was water running at the road crossing but no issues getting across. Hiked the loop in a CCW direction to check out the dirt bike trail first. It's steep in sections but easy to follow as we made our way to the corral/cabin. Pine Creek was running but easy to get across dry at this crossing.

Took a short break at the cabin to empty the granite from the shoes and then continued the loop on the Pipeline. Pipeline Trail is a 2-track trail but very enjoyable. At the Pine Creek crossing along the Pipeline Ryan decided to rinse his shoes off, or, slipped off the rock used to cross the creek dry :) Water was running from Mud Springs but we didn't check the source. I took a short detour to check out Boulder Mountain Spring but only went as far as the creek drainage to verify water was running. From there it is all downhill back to the parking.

Nice loop but we both agreed that if we did it again, CW would be better.

Early end to 2022, and for my customary Mazzy year-ender I went back to Boulder. Started the year by looping Pine Mountain, so there was some poetry in ending by looping its little brother. Followed in the 2014 footsteps of @BiFrost and sent their route to RS. Timed right, this route is one of the best ways to spend a day in Central AZ. Jumped on this one as the cold front finished up. Went CCW an hour and a half before sunrise.

Wrote about this in January, but Ballantine is largely no good past the corral. So it was creek bed until the climb out, where the trail picks up until the ridge. After that, got off track before Rock Tank. Gets easier to follow after as the trail heads into the pines toward the AZT connector.

The very top of the connector is gone, so I headed straight up to the road. There's a barbed wire fence the way I went, but it seemed easier than the alternatives. Clouds passed overhead and storms built to the west as I walked the road. Decided if the ridgeline wasn't covered in clouds by the time I got there, there was no way I would turn back. The sky was cloudy and darkening over everywhere but Boulder, so I took it as a sign and headed up the ridge.

It's a bushwhack around the boulders until the first saddle. Then the route enters the Bush Fire perimeter. The only burned pines are around the first saddle. The mountainside is a nice and easy walk under the green, green pines until the third saddle, where in years prior to 2020 the route became a significant bushwhack. Maybe the only good thing to come out of that fire is that the brushy sections of the Boulder Mountain ridgeline mostly burned. It was almost disappointingly easy. Still tough so many miles in. There's one notable scramble before the final climb to the summit. Other than that the terrain wasn't too bad, mostly piney or burned away.

Made the summit, and like in 2019 I only go to enjoy it for about a half hour before the rain clouds started to roll in. By the time I made Pipeline, the mountain and ridgeline were swallowed up. Took a break at the cabin, and proceeded to Ballantine and down. Awesome cloudy sunset made for a great finish.

Third attempt at Boulder Mountain in 10 days. This time I came armed with advice and a route sent to me by @CannondaleKid. With his help, I switched ridges and was able to excise ~5 miles off the route. I still think that the drainage I used last time is a good route up from the Ballantine side, but it makes little sense to use it on a trip up FR1704. The long and the short of it is this time I made it.

Parked at the Sycamore Creek pull out near Round Valley once again and headed up the road. Water in every creek and drainage on the way up, and a lot of water running down the road. At least one good sized waterfall not too far down from 1704. Spent about 4.5 miles on 1704/Pipeline before heading off trail. Not sure if I made it to the Pipeline trail, hard to tell where the road ends and it begins.

The off trail work was hardest in the boulder field that has to be negotiated .25mi after leaving the trail. Once to the main ascent the miles come pretty easy. The game trails were wider, longer, and more numerous on this side of the mountain.

Made it to Holbrook Ridge and the clouds were starting to blow into Pine Creek Basin and toward the mountain. The ridge skinnies up, and there is some scrambling. This is made trickier by the dense plant life. Was soaking wet by the time I made it there because of all the bushes holding rain from the day/night before, and this made the scrambling more difficult as I didn't have much grip on the smooth granite.

Took me 3.25 hours to summit: 1.5 on the road and 1.75 plodding up slope. The views of the clouds sweetened the last failure, as I wouldn't have been there to see them had I made it. They started to darken, so I headed down after about a half hour.

Walked down the ridge through clouds that were pushing their way up onto Boulder. By the time I was two miles from my car dark rain clouds had swallowed the mountain. Pretty good timing. That, and there was a rainbow close by on the last of the walk down as the rain started. Pretty neat.

Didn't see anyone on the hike and no animals besides cows. I think this might be the least difficult route up Boulder Mountain. Not necessarily the best, but if the end goal is getting up there, I think this route is a winner.

Second attempt at reaching the summit of Boulder Mountain in four days, second failure. This time instead of coming in from Ballantine I took FR1704 to the Pipeline Trail and then up the drainage I had scouted out a few days prior. This route has no advantages over a Ballantine approach other than being marginally shorter.

Parked first thing to the left at the Sycamore Creek pullout. Immediately had to take my boots off to cross the creek. Strong flow in Sycamore Creek, and the trees were a nice orange color. No snow left on the mountain, but there's some left on the north side of Pine Mountain.

FR1704 was eroded, rocky, and slippery with loose granite. Inadvertently drove 8 head of cattle up the road about a half mile until they conceded the route. All the drainages were flowing pretty nicely, and there were a few waterfalls and cascades down away from the road.

Left Pipeline and climbed up onto the desert floor to the south above the drainage in order to minimize the bushwhacking down the creek. Crossed over about halfway and headed up toward the main ridge. Used the short, faint game trails to cut across the slope until I could find gaps in the scrub oak to climb up through. A lot of scrambling and pretty brutal grade. Going up the ridge I went under a mile an hour.

Made it to the last false summit, and for what ended up being no good reason talked myself out of continuing. Ended up a little over a half mile away and 500ft below the summit. All that was left was a boulder-y section of ridgeline and then the turn toward the peak on the easiest grade since getting on the mountain. At least the mountain isn't going anywhere. Determined to get it done before the end of winter.

Been enamored with Boulder Mountain since my first time to Ballantine Cabin. Can't pass it on the 87 without staring. Figured I'd try to summit it today despite being a little under the weather. Ended up failing, just making it to the base of the mountain.

Great day to be in the Mazatzals with snow above ~5000ft all the way up the range and even down in the Eastern Superstitions. Arrived at the trailhead a little before dawn with temperatures in the low 40s. Tried to hurry to the cabin so that I could get a good look at the mountain before the snow could melt. Pine Creek was raging and almost enough to block out the noise of the highway traffic. Camp Creek had a strong flow of water too. Ballantine and Pine Creek trails were pretty water-logged.

Coming over the ridge toward the cabin the view of the mountain stopped me in my tracks. Water in the creeks before the cabin and really there was water in every drainage up there. Didn't have to take my boots off except to cross Pine Creek on the Pipeline trail. Water was cold but felt great.

Farther up the Pipeline trail I went the more I was sure that I wouldn't be getting to the summit today. Didn't have my legs under me, and with the snow on the steepest parts of the climb it was sure to be even harder than it normally would be. I ended up ~1.5mi/2.1kft short of the summit. Figured out a route to the base of the mountain and turned back feeling dizzy and sick but more prepared for next time.

Only wildlife I saw all day was a coati digging around in a drainage just before I left the Pipeline trail. Didn't think they lived up there. Saw three groups of hikers between Boulder Flat and the trailhead on my way back.

Another recon hike with Dese to check out the area some more. We didn't hike completely up to the Whorled Wall, just a loop past the cabin and across the sloping bajada. Mostly tranquil, except for the hot-dogging fighter jets overhead and the multiple viper encounters!

To cover some new ground we hiked FR1704 and the Pipeline Trail to the Ballantine Cabin/Corral as an out and back. Water was flowing everywhere along the hike, and the ground was very damp, which made the desert pop, if you know what I mean; very, very, green. The lower portion of FR1704 was very rocky with grapefruit sized rocks which was a little rough on the feet but not to bad. Once you make the sharp right turn the road/trail gets a lot better. We saw three white-tail deer right along the road but they scampered off before I could get the camera out. Fantastic spring day in this great state of ours.

My route I posted is one-way only starting just past the cabin where we had lunch back to the parking area off HWY87.

PS: I tip my hat to anyone who has driven up FR1704. If you made it past the stock 4x4 TH even more kudos :app:

Don't ask me why I thought a hike up to the top of Boulder Mountain from the Ballantine Trailhead would be a good idea today? I should have got my first clue when I arrived at the trailhead a little after 9AM and it was already 99 degrees out. Awh what the heck I loaded up my Camelbak and off I went.

About halfway to the cabin I nearly stepped on the coolest little desert tortoise. This thing was so tiny. I have seen several along the way but never a baby. This was the highlight of the trip.

It was flat out hot on that trail with no tree cover. I started to second guess my decision as I approached the cabin. Then inside I found a couple gallons of water. Right before that I was thinking about aborting Boulder Mtn and just doing the cabin loop. Probably would have been the smarter choice but knowing there was back up water I kept going.

All was good until I started up the ravine and then up the side of the mountain. It's brushy with catclaw and live oak. This made for slow progress. The heat was really taking its toll and my water consumption was way up from normal. I kept pushing forward. Then came a point where I said to myself "It would be wise to turn back now". My stubborn self hates to not finish a task so I pushed on. As I continued up I took a couple breaks in the shade where I could find some. There wasn't much of it so I figured I had better take advantage of the few spots available.

When I reached the first false summit I had less than 20 ounces of water left. It was 95 degrees up there and I had 3 miles to get back to the cabin with a solid one of it being off trail. It was a difficult decision but I turned back with only a half a mile to reach the summit. I knew another mile round trip would have drained the rest of my water well before reaching the cabin.

I headed back down which was much easier than going up but still a slow go. I was frustrated but knew I made the smart choice. Along the way I would hit a few more shade spots with short breaks. My body was starting to overheat and I had limited water to cool it off. My final sip was taken a half mile before reaching the cabin. I smiled in defeat as this confirmed I did the right thing.

Upon reaching the cabin I drank a bit of the water and then put a couple liters in my bag. I sat down on some foam that was on the floor and just chilled for about 20 minutes. It felt awesome!

After that it was an easy 4 mile hike back to the car. Along the way I looked down at the Fenix and the temps reached a blistering 107 on it.

It looks like I am going to have to go back and make another run at Boulder Mountain. Next time it will be cooler and I might even take Cannondale Kids advice and Jeep in.

On the way home from Payson I got a whim to go try out the Pipeline Road with the Cherokee. I did this hike last year with Bob shortly after I bought the car. This time I have a small lift and wanted to see the difference. Good news it never bottomed out! Bad news I had a rock go through the sidewall of my front passenger tire about 3 miles in. Luckily I have a full size spare so I swapped it out after backing down the road to a flat spot.

Then I went on a hike to the cabin. I was thinking it was only around 6 miles. I text JohnLP to confirm distance but he said it was apx. 10 miles round trip. I was a little concerned about going back down that road without a spare. The main thing is I wanted to be out of there before dark just in case.

The hike went fast and going out was smooth sailing. Looks like I will be taking advantage of that "road hazard" I bought with the tires tomorrow morning.

Having read previous hike descriptions on the Pipeline, I knew there was no way that I was driving to the TH. So I parked my car at the Sycamore Creek crossing and hiked in from there. : app : : app : : app : To anyone who has driven up any portion of forest rd. 1704. The "road" was steep, bouldery (beyond rocky), and numerous sudden elevation changes. I would imagine hiking would be almost as fast as driving this section. Made it to the Pipeline TH in about 1.5 hours. The road "Y"'s there. The left branch being FR 1704 that seems to end a few yards on at a barbed wire fence. The right branch turns into the Pipeline Trail.

The Pipeline Trail is as wide as the road up was, but has more pronounced gullies that would make driving this close to impossible. (That's going on the crazy assumption that someone could actually get a vehicle up to this TH.). The trail had some ups and downs as I transversely some valleys but it felt fairly flat after my hike up to this trail. Had a nice view of Phoenix as I crested one of the ridges. Took me a second to realize that the "foothill" in front of the Estrella Mountains was actually South Mountain. It is amazing how small it is in comparison! Ballantine Cabin was nice...bug/gnat free this time. Found and cairned the trail that heads off to the east from the cabin. (This trail had been described in other triplogs, but I had missed it my last time to the cabin. This will be a trail to do on a future trip).

For my return trip I followed a single track that took off from the west side of the corrals to the north. I had seen this trail on my previous visit to the cabin and after looking at some satellite images it looked as if it would get me close to where I started my hike. This turned out to be a trail made by motor bikes. Portions of it were steep, narrow, twisty but easy to follow... And actually kind of a nice after basically hiking a road up to the cabin. This trail took me right back FR 1704 where the road crosses a green cattle guard. This made for a very nice loop hike!

GPS said AEG was 3446... Seems a bit high?

Almost all the drama for the day happened on the drive along FR1704 so the Pipeline hike limited itself to me scaring up two large whitetail bucks on the off-trail return portion of our hike.

I had expected a great shot of the bigger buck because I already panned the camera and focused ahead of it where the smaller buck had passed, only to have it twist at the last moment and go on the other side of a tree. All this while Tracey was whining about foxtails in her socks and looking for a place to sit down, so she never got to see them. :-({|=

Still, I felt bad for her because she really wanted to see them. :sorrry:
The larger one appeared to have five points on each antler. :worthy:

We did spend some time at the Ballantine cabin checking out all the amenities... kind of interesting.

I posted some to HAZ, the full set of photos can be viewed here:

I met John at what my daughter once called the girl place. Perfect time of year to hike in this area. Thanks for picking me up and for the water.

Decided it was time to take the Jeep on a little more challenging adventure. After the talk and recent activity on the Pipeline Road/Trail I figured this would be perfect place to go. The plan was to drive in as far as possible and then hike it to the Ballantine Cabin which I hadn't previously seen.

I picked up some schlep in Fountain Hills and took him with me. ;) Anyway off we went and we took the Jeep about 3 miles up the roughest road it has ever seen and found a nice pull off. From there we hiked the road the rest of the way to the cabin. This is no road for unmodified 4x4s past this point. See CannondaleKids recent triplog and videos.

The cabin was cool and we considered going on over to the Ballantine Trail and making a big loop out of the hike. Unfortunately, dark clouds were looming and we figured it best just to head back the way in which we came.

The ride out put a few more scrapes on the bottom of the Jeep than the way in but all in all no real issues. It was good to hike with Bob again and catch up.

I've finally linked up the Ballintine TH to MT Ord. I've hiked from the Bushnell Tanks TH to Boulder Bob's and from Bushnell tanks to the top of Ord.
On this trip, I hiked the Ballintine to the Cabin / Pipeline trail. Then I hiked the Pipeline to Boulder Bob's Cabin. Then I went down FR1704 to see how the good or bad the road is.

The Pipeline trail is very washed out. It also has a fine layer of small pebbles that make it very slippery on the steep downhill sections. I fell on my pumpkin 3 times!
I had GPS Joe's Boulder Bob's route. I setup a cairn where Boulder Bob's trail starts. There no sign here. Also if you look to the north, you'll see a huge 3 foot cairn in the middle of a rock field. The first 1 mile of the trail is very well cairned but as you approach the Boulder Bob canyon, the cairns disappear as the trail gets very faint. I used GPS Joe's track to guide me to the site of where the cabin used to be. I had lunch, and then headed back.
