Under threatening skies.
No ladybugs on top, have never seen this in August!
Thunder & lightning on the way back down.

Upper mountain was socked in, drove up for a hike through the clouds.
No views to be seen on top of Ladybug, total cloud white out ... it was awesome!

coffee and breakfast at first light
packed up and headed down the road to cunningham campground
set out on the overgrown grant creek trail, cross moonshine creek, then followed a forest road out to a really nice lookout point
came back on the roads
next up was heliograph loop from shannon campground
probably the nicest trail of the trip
good views from the tower
finished the loop on the road
on the way down, stopped at ladybug saddle to do the short hike to the ladybug peak
nice little high point complete with ladybugs
lunch at a dive bar at the base of the mountain - good burgers & fries
uneventful trip back
great trip, good times with bruce and john
nice to get mount graham finally, and get away from the valley for a weekend
a lot has changed from the frye fire, but the pinelanos are still a worthy destination
thanks for doing the driving guys

Day 3 in the Pinalenos. We hit these 3 on the way out.

Moonshine Creek

Starting from Cunningham CG, we headed down the trail. It doesn't look like this trail has received much maintenance, so a GPS track helps guide you. The payoff is the viewpoint on the rock outcropping at the end. Taking the FR, you could drive just about any vehicle with decent clearance and tires to within 500 feet of the spot. It's definitely a worthwhile stop. We opted for a road walk back instead of getting scratched up on the trail.

Heliograph Peak Loop

We started at Shannon CG and headed clockwise up, up, up to the peak. We passed Eagle Peak, and I would have liked to hit the rugged namesake outcropping, but it wasn't in the cards this time. Fall was definitely showing off on this one, with golden aspens stealing the scene. At the top, I met up with the speedsters who were just coming down from the 99.9-foot Heliograph lookout tower. I climbed the tower to take in the views and, more importantly, dry off from the climb. We searched for the peak marker but to no avail. The peak register was damp, so we didn’t attempt to sign it. We completed the loop by heading down the tower road.

[ youtube video ]

Back at the trailhead, we chatted with the camp host, who is also the sole volunteer clearing trails in the entire park. He’s currently working on the Ash Creek Trail. Apparently, the Park Service has a hiring freeze for at least the next 18 months.

Ladybug Peak

We had to hit this one as our last stop on the way out. Short and sweet. It was getting hot, with temperatures reaching the mid-70s. I guess we missed @SkyIslander18 by just a few hours, as he completed this hike later in the day. And if you’re wondering… yes, there were ladybugs on the peak!

All in all, it was a great trip to the Pinalenos. We had the perfect campsite, centrally located to the range’s options. Temps dropped to 49°F in the morning and reached the high 60s to low 70s during the day. Good times.....

Last day of a three day tour in the Pinalenos. First up was Moonshine Creek. Supposed to be an easy hike, but with the blowdown and overgrowth we got some exercise. Views at the end were worth the effort.
Heliograph Peak trail is in good shape and scenic. Went up 80' into the tower for the views and cooling breeze. Nice fall colored aspens.
On the drive out we stopped for a quick hike up the scenic Ladybug Peak trail. Short and sweet.
Great trip with the Eagle and gecko! Thanks you two. :)

Late afternoon peaker.
Still a lot of Ladybugs on top!
Switchbacks driving up are starting to turn color, but it's looking like the leaves will get cooked this year by the endless heat :(

First a lower mountain stop at Angle Orchard for some Saturn hiking peaches.
We then drove up to Ladybug Saddle.
Hiked up to Ladybug Peak to view the million or two ladybugs.
We got buzzed on top by a rattlesnake under some boulders, never saw that sucker.
Then down Bear Canyon to the Dutch Henry/Bear Canyon T and back up.
Last mountain stop was a drive down to Upper Arcadia where we hiked down to the upper crossing to pick some raspberries.
One more stop on the ride home for some ice cream at Joe's Ride-N-Dine ... AZ be being HOT
Good time, great friend ... awesome mountain!

Up Turkey Flat to the base of Mt Baldy.
Did not go up to the peak due to monsoon weather :scared:
Added a drive up to Ladybug Saddle and hiked up to Ladybug Peak.
The most ladybugs I have ever seen on top in my 40+ years of going up there ... incredible!

Next was down Bear Canyon trail to Dutch Henry trail.
Dutch Henry trail all but gone now.
Back up to Ladybug Peak for more ladybugs.

Wanted to get another snow day in on top before it all starts to vanish.
Parked at the end of the black top and hiked in on the closed dirt road.
Walked the sludgy Swift Trail down to Hospital Flat where snowshoes then became mandatory.
First went across the big meadow :next: down to Hospital Flat :next: over to Treasure Park, had a warm up fire and lunch here :next: back up to the Swift Trail and back to where I parked.
All the roads down to the campgrounds and meadows are still fully covered in snow and looked beautiful!
All the creeks were flowing good with snow melt.
Ended the day at Ladybug Peak for sunset.

Just 4 miles, but snowshoeing it ... well that wore me out
Awesome Day on Graham!

Grant Hill's aspens looked golden good from my Plain View Peak hike the other day, so Grant Hill was the choice today.
Completed the outer loop clockwise.
Had a conversation with an endangered Red Squirrel right at the start, he seemed mad at me?
These trails were worked this year and are in great shape!
I enjoyed the 2 big overlooks and had a nice chat with a couple at overlook 2.
This whole badly burnt area will be a magnificent aspen forest one day, it looked real good today and I look forward to watching it's growth in the future.

Ended my day with a twilight hike up to Ladybug Peak for sunset.
Not as many ladybugs up there as my last visit but there were still several hundred clumped together.
Sunset was a good one followed by a fun night hike down through the forest by the half moonlight.

Temps are finally starting to drop ... it's time to get off the mountain and start exploring this AZ desert again.

Didn't plan on a hike this day, but the power went out at my home.
So ... I drove all the way up to the top of Graham for just a 1 mile hike
It's not like gas prices are high right now
Made it up to the peak in the late afternoon to the always great views down on the Greesewood Mountains.
No ladybugs spotted on the tippy top, but a tad further down in the rocks there were thousands :o
Hiked back down and drove to the Shake Trail for sunset still picking ladybugs out of my clothing and hair.
Had a hammock and coffee sunset at Shake before driving back down.
All wildlife (-ladybugs) spotted was on the drive back home including 1 white tail buck with 3 does, 1 rattlesnake, 1 gopher snake and 1 skunk ... all on the Swift Trail.
Unplanned trip, but a great afternoon/sunset spent in the pines.

Ladybug Trail top to bottom ... Finally :y:
We set up a shuttle leaving one vehicle at Angle Orchard and driving up to Ladybug Saddle.
We first bagged Ladybug Peak. There was a new register up there and about a hundred or so ladybugs.
Then down #329 we went-
Outstanding trail and one of the very few trails that was spared by the Frye Fire.
This trail has it all as you descend the 3500 ft down from the pines to the upper desert.
Beautiful forest, great overlooks, cool rock formations, lot's of blooming cactus and a good flowing creek at the bottom. Sky Island weather was chilly on top and hot at the bottom :|
A short hike up to Angle Orchard and drive back up to Ladybug Saddle ended our day together.
Addie drove back down and home as I stayed on the mountain for a bit more.
I had time for a quick sunset hike down to Cluff Dairy then a fire and pick me up coffee at RTM CG before heading home.
Great day on the mountain with my buddy, in fact ... top 3 favorite hike of this 2023!

One final little jaunt to put the cherry on top of a fantastic weekend in the leños. Sky islands sometimes have a jekyll and hyde feature when it comes to north- and south-facing slopes, and there's perhaps no more abrupt change that I know of than when this trail crosses the crest. At an elevation of 8700 feet you transtion from something similar to Payson, to something similar to the White Mountains in a matter of 20 yards. It's striking.

At the summit, the views off the southern tip of the range are great and make Shake, Dutch Henry, Bear Canyon, and the full Ladybug call out for further review. One day...

Final hike of the Labor Day weekend. Chumley suggested this one on the drive out and it turned out to be pretty good for such a short hike. It was also amazing how much warmer it was on this side at 8700 feet compared to the top of the mountain at 9500 feet. It felt like 20 degrees warmer and with southern exposure it was warm.

Despite the summer feel it's hard to pack much more views and quality hiking into such a short trip. We took a leisurely break on the summit and enjoyed the last hike of the weekend!

After a visit to the Angle Orchard it was time for a hike. By 11 AM it was way too humid to enjoy hiking from the Orchard to the summit, so I opted instead to hike from Turkey Flat. Still, way too humid to enjoy. I had the experience, and once was plenty. I also hiked to the Ladybug Saddle and met up with Mike and his friend Jacki, and then returned to the summit, and also continued a short distance down the Bear Canyon Trail, but it was just dense moist nearly tropical forest, so I turned back.

Storm cloud views were nice, though.
