it's been seven years since doing this hike with linda and whitney
after considering some other options, we decided to do it again
got going around 0715 up aspen to the peak
took the long way to the lookout, then back down to wilderness of rocks
that trail and the lower part of mount lemmon trail are my favorites - love the boulders
cool temps up high and some clouds at times
took a break down low
the uphill to marshall saddle was a bit warmer in the sun
overall a very nice day
i really enjoy hiking on mount lemmon and any other sky island for that matter
thanks linda, nice sampler

Kelly and I opted for a repeat of a hike we did on Lemmon about seven years ago. Got to Marshall Gulch and started around 0715. Laughably, it took us a moment to get onto Aspen Trail. Lots of vegetation growth in the several years it’s been since I was last in this area. My calves were killing me the first couple of miles, then finally loosened up, but didn’t feel great all day—my punishment for spending a chunk of Friday perched on a ladder while painting. Aspen is in generally good shape, and we took it all the way up to the top. Extremely hazy views, but closer scenery was still nice.

Once up top, we made out way over to the summit. That use trail is mostly defined, with a short rocky climb the final few hundred feet to the summit. Spent a few moments there, then made our way back to the Lemmon and Meadow trails. Took Meadow trail, then crossed back east on Lemmon over to the Lemmon Rock Lookout. The sign said closed, probably for stupid reasons, so we pretended to not understand how to read English and went up there anyway. Snapped a few quick pics, then headed back down.

Retraced our steps back west on Lemmon, then down. The descent was in rougher shape—some erosion in places, and some vegetation encroaching on the trail. We had lunch in a shady spot not far for the junction with Wilderness of Rocks trail. Warmer, but still pleasant, although most of the earlier shade provided by scattered clouds had disappeared.

WOR has also seen some erosion, and a little vague to follow in places. Long climb back out had me whining a bit. I was glad to reach the saddle. The final hike out on Marshall Gulch was a breeze, finishing up just before 1530. Trailhead was a mob scene. I was glad I drove the Jeep (intentional decision) as it’s a lot easier to get it out of that crammed parking lot vs either truck. It’s also easier to avoid bicyclists on that highway while driving the Jeep, less side mirror to worry about and less having to cross over the double yellow. Traffic back to Phoenix was incredibly light. Great day and a great hike, thanks, Kelly, for joining me on this one again.

Did a figure 8 loop high in the Catalinas to avoid the heat. Even still, though it only rose to 80 degrees, the UV index was as high as 13 and it made it challenging.

Hiked out of Marshall Gulch TH. Took Marshall Gulch to Wilderness of Rocks to Lemmon Rock Lookout. This trail had full sized pines down across the trail. Visited the lookout and was tempted to hop in its outdoor shower!

Got back on route, taking Mt. Lemmon Trail and veered off briefly to take the little overgrown path around the observatory fence to near the peak.

Got back on trail, past the radio towers and top of the ski lift to Aspen Trail. Lots of little 3-year old aspens popping up. Rather than taking Marshall Gulch Trail back to the trailhead, we stayed on Aspen all the way back to the trailhead, making a figure 8 out of the route today.

Met up with Jim and drove up a surprisingly snow free Mount Lemmon highway to the ski area and quickly donned snow gear in the bitingly cold wind. Jim helped a car next to us that was spinning out on the ice get free from their parking space and then we set off down the car filled shoulder of the highway, looking for a way to descend the snowy slope to Aspen Draw Trail. Quite the wintery wonderland climbing the north slope of Radio Ridge. Using my hiking pole I estimated the snow depth near the top of the ridge at about 30 inches. Cresting the ridge, the wind was howling and whipping snow into the air. Temps hovered in the 20s but felt much colder due to the wind. Everything in sight was caked in heavy ice and pieces of it were raining down from the communication towers above us. We moved west up the ridge and on to the true summit of Mount Lemmon, which that day was a massive snow pile next to the telescope buildings, which we climbed. We then moved on to Meadow Trail. The sun was starting to set and the mountain top was bathed in pinks and oranges, contrasting beautifully with the blues and whites of snow and ice covered trees. Just incredible…and incredibly cold. The lights of Tucson came on while plodding east on Lemmon Trail at dusk. Soon it was dark and the wind was blasting over Radio Ridge again. I was thankful to drop down onto Aspen Draw Trail again and be out of the wind. I followed Jim straight down a steep drainage in the dark, stumbling in the deep snow occasionally when my snowshoes would catch a branch. Reaching the trail again, we soon popped out at the ski area. I think we were both thankful to be out of the wind in my warm vehicle and heading for home. A great and memorable adventure!

My yearly snowshoe trip on Mount Lemmon. I joined Preston, as I technically rode up with him as we expected the road to be open to 4x4 only, but it seemed it was open to everyone by the time we were on it. The road was clear and dry.

The day was very cold and slightly windy, except near exposed areas where it was very windy. Biter cold that is atypical for the Sky Islands and Tucson was the experience. I may not like 110 anymore, but cold wind and 25 isn't much fun, either. At least I know this and was dressed for it.

My vehicle could have made it with no problems, but there was a Subaru which was stuck on a thin piece of ice in the parking lot. It appeared the AWD failed, and only 1 wheel was spinning. It was the one on the ice, of course.

The snow level is rather high, but it is also deep once you are over 8000'. Ski the Lemmon appeared to be in great shape, and they reported 24 inches of snow from the storm. It seemed like it was at least that much, as the snow near the base of the resort was deeper than my ice axe is long. On the exposed south facing area off the Meadow Trail, the snow was as deep as my axe. About 24 inches. Snow remained intact and deep for the entire hike, even on the road section of trail #5, and radio ridge. Usually, those melt or blow off.

We hiked up the route of the Aspen Draw to Radio Ridge, over to the summit of Mount Lemmon, back down to the Meadow Trail, over to a view stop above Quartzite Spring, down to the Mount Lemmon Trail, and back to the road from there. Then down the way we came up, but cut out most of the trail and dropped directly down the drainage to the trail near the trailhead.

Gushing! The pipe was flowing heavily, and the water was running very heavily from the slope and rock above the pipe and spring house. Deep snow all around, but there was flowing water on the road from the heavy spring discharge. Should be good into summer.

Had a great hike with Brian and Jim across some of the best trails on Mt Lemmon. Temps were between 66 and 72 all day. Humidity was high. There was a lot of water flowing in various areas. We were able to refill our water in a few places along the hike. We had a great pre-4th BBQ afterwards of tri-tip, hot dogs, cole slaw and fresh squeezed orange juice. We're ready for Mt Whitney in a few days.

Stats are from Strava GPS route which contained 25,000 unique data points.

An Independence Weekend hike on the Lemmon. Basically, a variation of the Shady Lemmon Loop hike, as shade is abundant on this loop if you hike counter clockwise. Great weather, and not very many people out considering the weekend. No traffic heading up, none coming down (after 9 pm) and no one using the BBQ grills at the picnic area when we got there around 7 PM. We grilled hotdogs and tri-tip after the hike. it was good.

Raspberries along Mint spring near the TH are in season. Perhaps early due to the abundant rain up here over the last few weeks. Everything is wet and all of the creeks, springs, seeps, and rocks seem to be running with water. I was able to filter some nice water from Lemmon Creek, and Mike and Brian sampled the fresh stuff from Quartzite Spring.

Believe it or not, the loss of the overly dense pine reproduction in the WOR seems to have been beneficial. Some older trees also died, but at least dog hair thicket is not in the cards at this point. Things actually looked really nice on the hike. Tons of penstemon and lots of hummingbirds, too.

Last winter, in early February, it took Pima County a week to open the Catalina Highway. This time it took 2 days. So, even though I was thinking I was going to go to the Pinalenos to probably snowshoe Heliograph Peak, I didn't have to do that. Perhaps the snow would have been better quality and much fluffier at 10,000', but I don't know how the road would have been, and I wasn't able to tell how deep the snow was around Heliograph. Plus, it is 3 hours each way to get to the trailhead. Frankly, I am always tired after snowshoeing, so not driving home for 3 hours, and instead only driving for 90 minutes, is much nicer.

Drove to the ski area and found it overflowing. So, I parked at a pullout just down the road. I geared up, and dropped down the slope to the creek bottom, and hiked up to the Aspen Draw trail. I then followed a nice ski track to the top of the ridge, which was pretty convenient as it seems that everyone always physically forgets how hard snowshoeing really is. The views were great, and the snow was a lot better than last year, so I was able to hike to the actual summit of Mt Lemmon, and not just the spot outside the fencing which is falling down on itself, and I continued on to a nice loop using the Meadow Trail and last section of the Mount Lemmon Trail. I descend directly down slope for most of my return from Radio Ridge, which was great as hiking down in dense powder snow is the best way to snowshoe. I then drove home to my pulled pork shoulder which was in the oven for 7 hours. It was great.

After work hike to the true summit of Mount Lemmon via Radio Ridge and Mint Spring trailhead. Wildflowers are on the wane on Radio Ridge. Signed the big notebook in the giant summit register jar. Beautiful and cool on the summit. Took Aspen Draw Trail down to upper Sabino Canyon for the return hike. Sabino Creek is flowing strongly. Enjoyed a couple of freshly picked apples while passing through Summerhaven. Made it back at dusk.

My original intention was to hike the top of Aspen Trail into Wilderness of Rocks, but, not seeing any closed signs or indications of it being so, I started following Meadow Trail. Was Meadow closed further in? Did the Forest Service re-open it? I don’t know, but lots of hikers, some climbers, and no closed signs to be seen along my entire hike.

Meadow Trail looked largely unscathed to me. Except for a few torches trees here and there, the top of the mountain looked to be mostly ground fire. Very little evidence of fire on the western-end switchbacks.

I kept going on Mount Lemmon Trail, which had mosaic burn between Meadow and Sutherland Trail junction. Sporadic torching observed in places. The post-Aspen Fire aspens burned, but already have 3 foot tall replacements coming up in their ruin. The bracken ferns are coming in strong and carpet the open areas. Most of the pines at Sutherland junction are wiped out, which is where I turned around. More mosaic burn along upper Sutherland and upper Canada del Oro from what I could see, with quite a few surviving pines.

I took the same route back, except for an off-trail side trip to the west side of Lemmon itself. More mosaic burn here, and nice to see one of my favorite spots still has living tree cover. Did one quick lap to the top of Radio Ridge at the end, and then headed home.

Not as bad as I feared as far as fire damage goes along the route I took. Still rough to see, but it looks like recovery is already under way in many places.

Parked at the Marshall Gulch TH, and started on the Aspen trail a little after 8:00. Trail is in good shape, although the locust could be trimmed back a little. We took a snack break at Marshall Saddle, then continued to head up Aspen. At the top, we headed over to the summit. My RS straightlined just before the summit, but pausing and restarting got it recording again. The distance affected was minimal. From the summit, we headed over to Meadow Trail, and took that west to where it meets Lemmon trail. From there, we took a quick detour over to Lemmon Rock lookout, then retraced our steps and continued down Lemmon. Found a shady spot for a lunch break, then continued down. Headed east at Wilderness of Rocks. It was hot by then, so we took our time. Refilled our water at Lemmon Creek, then continued on. Not too far from the junction with Lemmon Rock trail, we were greeted by an angry Arizona Black Rattler. I proceeded to annoy him some more to try to get him to pose for some pictures, but he wouldn't move out of the shade. At Marshall Saddle again, we headed down Marshall Gulch to finish out the hike, finishing up just before 4:45. Nice day, even if it was hot at times. All new territory for Daniela.

The Mount Lemmon area is absolutely incredible just to drive through, but what fun would that be? Hiking in it is a whole other story. I can't wait to explore more trails around Lemmon. The Marshall Gulch section is really foresty...like the type of forest you would not expect to see in Tucson, AZ. There are cool rock formations to play on along the way. Nearing the top the vegetation changes again treats hikers to new colors, textures, views. People are able to drive to the top so it's a little funny to hike up and then see a whole bunch of people walking around.

Wanting to check out a new area but not having too much time, though I would take the drive up to the top. Drove as far as I could and found a small trail to the top. Found the marker and the register box. Ate a snack and headed back. This is my next area to explore as soon as it cools off. The drive up was gorgeous.

Met up with Lee and Carrie for a nice hike on Lemmon. Lee and I left Phoenix fairly early and made the drive down to Tucson where we picked up Carrie and headed up the Catalina Hwy. We made the drive up and parked in a very busy parking lot at the Marshall Gulch area. From there we geared up and made the hike in. We passed a variety of people and then headed up the Aspen Trail towards the summit. Once up top we soaked in the views and headed west and took a snack break before heading down the Lemmon Trail. We then turned into Wildnerness of Rocks and headed across. This section is one of my favorite hikes around. I love the formations and enjoy the creek flowing through. At one point we took a lunch and then continued hiking back to the vehicle. We finished up late in the afternoon and then started the return. We stopped in Tucson to get some food and then dropped Carrie off and headed back to Phoenix. It was a long day but was well worth it. Thanks Lee for driving!

@John9L put together a nice loop for my first time up on Lemmon and I came away with a great first impression of the area. We took a lot of breaks because in accordance with National Dog Day we were hiking with three dogs and it did get a little warm for stretches. Although, apparently not everyone was observing National Dog Day, as someone chose to mumble their opinion about dogs to us as we passed him early on. Luckily for him, we passed him on the trail two more times, but I am not sure we won him over on either of those encounters either.

All of the trails on the loop were in pretty good shape in my opinion. The initial climb was a tad warm, but its a pretty quick and easy climb, so none were too affected by it. It was a little busy on top and the high point is not much to write home about, but Lemmon Lookout was a worthy detour. The hike through Wilderness of Rocks was great and there was ample water for dogs and skinny dipping apparently, as another group was partaking in that. We bumped into @arizona_water in the WOR and chatted a bit, nice to finally meet him. We finished to a crowded traihead area and played a little musical car parking spots to get out and let others in. We finished up at the Tucson Hop Shop, had a couple of beers and ate curry from a food truck, when in Tucson I guess....

National Dog Day

Every day is National Dog Day in my house and I do realize its just a silly hashtag driven holiday. However, I could not help but get a little sentimental reflecting on how much my dogs mean to me. In particular, how much Cupcake means to me. She helped me get "normal" after a tough year in Iraq and then waited for me when I left her again to go to Afghanistan. She turns 13 in December, but is still one of the toughest dogs I know, she has been hit by a car and nearly drowned in the Blue Range, but she still persists and knocks out miles and eats chicken treats with the zeal of a five year old dog. She has been the most consistent entity in my life for most of my adult years and I really can't imagine life without her and Mr. Blanco...

Shauna and I decided to escape the hellish heatwave and enjoy the Lemmon high country for a hike around the summit. Climbing out of my truck at Ski Valley, I promptly hugged an aspen tree, thankful to be in the forest and not suffering under oppressive desert heat. A climb on the Aspen Draw Trail was up first. Growing thunderstorms moved east without unleashing any lightning, thankfully, as the Catalina forests looked very, very dry. Hazy views, blooming sneezeflowers and a mountainside of bracken ferns greeted us on Radio Ridge. Continuing on to the true summit of Mount Lemmon, we added our names to the previous HAZ lineup, and then did an out-and-back on the Meadow Trail. We descended to the Ski Valley parking lot along the summit road, where a corkbark fir was begging for a hug. A fiery orange and red sunset demanded a photo stop on the old Mount Lemmon road before driving home with half the population of Tucson. An afternoon well spent.

My morning started off in slight crisis mode when, as soon as I turned on my car, the low tire pressure warning light was on. Sure enough, flat tire--second one in a week! I quickly moved all my stuff to my husband's truck, and managed to arrive to meet Kelly & Whitney only ten minutes late, and as an added bonus, got to drive a brand new truck with less than a hundred miles on it. It now has about four hundred, but I'll let my husband discover that on his own.

We got to the trailhead at 8:00 and got started on Aspen trail. We followed Aspen all the way to the top, then made our way west past the towers and headed over to the summit behind the observatory. We may have accidentally found ourselves on the wrong side of the fence (oops, maybe I shouldn't lead), but quickly corrected that and found the register. After that, we got back on Meadow trail and took it west. This added a little distance and some backtracking at one point, but Kelly hadn't been on Meadow yet, and I thought she would like it.

When we reached Mt Lemmon trail, Kelly and I took it back east to the top of Lemmon Rock trail and quickly went down to the lookout, while Whitney stayed back at the junction for a break. We took a few pics then headed back to meet Whitney, and continued down Mt Lemmon trail to Wilderness of Rocks. The occasional clouds were welcome along here, as it was a little warm at times.

The first two miles on WoR were probably the two warmest miles of the day, but the great scenery made up for it. Once we got back into the trees, the temps felt a little better. We took some breaks along the water, then made our way up to the saddle. At the saddle, we headed back to the trailhead on Marshall Gulch, finishing up just before 5:00. Fun day, and the variety of scenery along the way is always enjoyable.

1st trip
linda and whitney had planned to hike this figure 8 on mt. lemmon
got an invite from linda to tag along :)
i've done the marshall gulch - aspen loop before, but the rest of the trails would be new to me
not quite three hours from the pecos park & ride, putting some miles on the new tundra
got going around 8:00 up aspen trail
continued on aspen up to the mt. lemmon summit area, and followed preston's track to the top
interesting stuff up there, with the pima county high point as a bonus
continued on meadow trail, then backtracked a bit to lemmon rock lookout
this was a neat little spot, with great views and a fun approach to the building
should have talked whitney into coming with us, and taking a snack break there
dropped down the mount lemmon trail through forest, with good views to the west
started seeing some of the more bouldery terrain near the intersection with wilderness of rocks
loved this trail winding through the rocks :)
a steady climb back up to the saddle
found a little bit of running water, with columbines nearby, then some shady areas up higher
passed by primus wall, where i climbed with johnr1 a few years ago
easy stroll down marshall gulch to finish
not many people out by this point
scenic drive down the catalina highway, slow going across tucson, then back to the valley
i have really enjoyed the sky island terrain recently and this hike was a nice sampler of the available trails up high
highlights included wilderness of rocks trail, mt. lemmon summit, and lemmon rock lookout
nice to meet and hike with whitney and another good hike with linda
in fact, eight of my twelve new peaks so far this year have been with linda
thanks for including me on this one :)
