Two easy and separate hikes today in the tolerably constant rain and sprinkles. The first was a quick CCW Bolt Trail / Radio Tower Loop to the 2332' Casa Grande 2. My third time at this summit in the last few weeks with foggy views mostly of the inside of some clouds, so on this trip, I missed scoping Ariona's premier city! There were a few other groups and solo hikers on the Radio Tower Road. Drove over to the east side Arica Road TH afterwards and wandered around on some of those trails until I was too wet for it to be fun anymore. No other vehicles at that carpark and of course, no other hikers. Some shooters were at one of the wildcat ranges south of Elzy Pearson again with some Tannerite, KABOOM!

Tuesday, I was scheduled for my monthly Lunch With Mom in Casa Grande. Wednesday, was supposed to be watching Celtic F.C. at The Desmond in downtown Phoenix. Thursday, I intended to hike Webber Creek, at the base of the Mogollon Rim. But I didn’t think it would be fair to drag my loving & supportive wife hither & yon three straight days, so I asked if she minded leaving early to get a hike in early before Lunch With Mom?

Thankfully, she said “yes”. (The first time she said “yes”, I had to wait an hour for her answer.) 💍

Today, I travelled light: No poles, and a Camelbak in place of my full pack. Expecting good cellphone reception so close to I-8 and I-10, I didn’t see the need for any emergency gear. I want to travel light more often, since carrying a pack takes so much extra energy.

It was a good thing I brought my cellphone, as I forgot the batteries for my pocket camera. 📲

I started hiking east on Hanna St. about 7:40 a.m. It was quite rocky. Okay to walk, but would not want to drive it past the trailhead. At ⅓ mile, Bolt Trail splits right at the first memorial.

Bolt Trail is steep as all get out, ascending 724 ft. in under ⅔ mile. The climb is in three distinct sections: A very steep 328 ft. in .24 miles (26% grade), followed by what seems like a relatively flat 171 ft. in .22 miles (“only” 15%), then the kicker to finish of 225 ft. in .14 miles (30%). Overall, the equivalent of 1200 ft. in one mile. My weekly trip up North Mountain paid dividends: I did it non-stop, in only 23 minutes. 💪

At the top of the Bolt Trail climb, the trail splits: Left, down to the antenna farm, somewhat to the right, along the Casa Grande 2 contour, or more rightish 20 ft. up to the summit of Casa Grande 2 (aka Hill 2332). Up I went. Why? In Mallory’s famous words, because it was there.

The best route down is via cement antenna farm road, due to vastly better grip than Bolt Trail. If you called it a day from the top of Casa Grande 2, the round trip would be 2 miles, 850 AEG — a solid pre-work workout. Somehow, the antenna farm road seemed even steeper than Bolt Trail.

From the top of Casa Grande 2, I headed south along the ridgeline. The well-defined trail crosses several small hilltops and saddles. In ½ mile, the trail climbs 100 ft. in 200 yds. to the top of Casa Grande 1, aka Hill 2350, aka The Flagpole. Most people turn around after visiting The Flagpole. A round trip to The Flagpole is 3⅓ miles, 1,100 ft. AEG. However, it is only another ⅓ mile to the ridgeline’s final hilltop.

South of Casa Grande 1, the trail gets less distinct: A bit rockier, grass encroaching, and dotted with fallen cholla buds waiting to jump on your calves. Still, if you’ve spent any amount of time hiking in the Sonoran Desert, the final ⅓ mile is bueno.

Having arrived on the final ridgeline hilltop, I turned off my GoPro and started taking photos. Great views in all directions! But I did not dally, and light on my feet, moved quickly back along the ridgelinel to the antenna farm, then down to the trailhead.

No sodium and potassium restoring V-8 was waiting for me, so when my wife & I arrived at the Casa Grande Cracker Barrel, I started my Mom Lunch with a Bloody Mary. 😆

This hike is my normal go to hike that I do 2,3x a week for the cardio. Sometimes do the same trail (with the family) just past the electronic towers and take the dirt trail to the top of the peak which is South West from the gate but not as far (2.53 mi). When with the family, I don't make it all the way to the Flag. It is a nice hike which starts out on a dirt road from the parking lot, really easy to follow. When you hit the pavement, that's when the fun starts. Remember to regulate your breathing (in through nose, out through mouth) and keep pushing on, your heartrate will escalate! Once to the top, follow the fence line trail South to the top and continue on this trail South/South East (you'll see Old Glory to the South). The trail goes up and down the ridge line all the way to the top of a peak which Old Glory is atop. Follow the trail back the way you just came and you'll be good! There is another trail you can take back down called Bolt Trail almost back to the towers. This trail is ok going up but kinda slippery going down due to gravel and such.

I decided that this was a good day to hike to a couple of Arizona range highpoints:
1) West Silver Bell Mountains HP
2) Casa Grande Mountains HP

West Silver Bell
This turned out to be a fun hike that I really enjoyed. It reminded me of hiking up to Sacaton in that you go up a NW drainage and then go up the north slopes to the summit.

Instead of driving all the way in to the Ironwood National Monument boundary, I parked about 1.35 miles from the boundary and walked on the road a bit to add some extra distance to the hike and to better observe the area.

From the Ironwood NM boundary, I headed on an easy open country excursion to a drainage on the NW side of the highpoint. Then I started along the drainage -- sometimes in the bottom of it and sometimes on the south side of it. I actually left the drainage too soon and headed toward what turned out to be a false summit -- I hate it when that happens! Then I had to traverse a bit to get back to where I wanted to be -- this made the ascent more difficult than it would have otherwise been. I had a much better route coming back down, and if I do the hike again I will go up the same way that I came down this time.

I enjoyed the views at the summit and hung out there for a bit, even though it was a cloudy and cool day.

I saw a couple of signs of illegal smuggling activity on the hike -- a carpet shoe and a black, one gallon water jug.

My original intention was to go hike to the Sawtooth Mountains highpoint after this hike, but as von Moltke, the brilliant German military strategist of the 19th century once said, "plans do not survive first contact with the enemy".

Google maps took me to a road that doesn't exist, and the road that I was on turned into a small lake, and since it was already about 1:30 I decided not to spend any more time trying to figure out how to get to the TH. So I headed off to hike to the Casa Grande Mountains HP.

Casa Grande
I did this one as a loop hike by going up on the Bolt Trail and coming back down on the Radio Tower Trail.

The Bolt Trail was steeper and tougher than the road, but I am glad that I went up that way.

There is apparently a shooting range nearby, and I heard a lot of gunshots off in the distance. There was a good bit of trash and graffiti along the way, and if I hadn't known better I would have thought that I was hiking in Phoenix or Vegas!

It was a cloudy cool afternoon and there was hardly anyone on the trails. There is lots of sun exposure on this hike, and I would not want to do this hike in warm/hot weather.

Synopsis
I enjoyed the West Silver Bell much better than the Casa Grande hike. There are some other shorter peaks in the West Silver Bells that look fun to climb, so I might go back out in that area sometime.

Distance and elevation gain for the 2 hikes are below. Stats above are the sum of the 2.

West Silver Bell: 5.69 miles with 1,371 feet of AEG
Casa Grande: 3.65 miles with 1,184 feet of AEG

On the way back north I decided to hit another all time unique for me on the outskirts of Arizona’s premier city! I opted to climb the trail and save the road for the downhill. I couldn’t figure out why the gps track went beyond the benchmark peak until I got up there. The ridgeline is really cool! I did a full out n back, hitting the range high point and a few other bumps along the way.

The gnats are out but the breeze helped keep them at bay. Visibility was terrible but there’s not much you’d want to see from here anyway!

The entire hike was accompanied by high caliber rapid gunfire along the base of the mountain. I skipped calling the sheriff. Probably because there’s a firing range.

Busy day of work down in the Old Pueblo, so only had time for a short one. Hit up this old favorite on the way home, nice temps in the afternoon with some cloud cover and a breeze. Made it up the Bolt trail, over on the ridgeline to the end of the trail, and then back around and down the Radio road. I will say the concrete on the tower road is much nicer for a decent than the old ankle buster rocks that were there to contend with. I did not see any other hikers until I made it back to the tower road, then I saw a good 30 people or so. Some jack- :pk: decided that it would be a good idea to put a big heavy rock on top of all the prominent Cholla and Saguaros along the ridgeline trail...the plant guy in me could not stand for it. I must have pulled off a good 50-60 on the way back to the tower. It is not quite orange spray paint on rocks, but pretty close in my book. All in all a good day!

After work grinder for some elevation gain, started out about 4. Made my way up the bolt trail, down the tower trail, and then back up the tower and over the ridgeline and back. The trail was in good shape, just a little muddy from the morning rain. There had to have been 30 cars in the parking lot when I was done, this was the busiest I have ever seen this trail. Trying to make that 20,000' gain for the month, if I can squeeze in one more hike by Saturday that should do it...

Great after work stop for a quickie. Hiked up the Bolt trail after a quick search, headed south along the ridgeline to the end of the trail, and came back via the radio tower road. I really enjoyed the Bolt trail, great elevation gain without having to walk the road. No other hikers out when I got there at 4 p.m.

Quick one in on the way home today, nice to hike with only a few pounds on my back after this weekend! Powered up the radio tower road, and continued on the ridgeline to the American Flag memorial, then turned around and headed back. I saw at least 20 other people yesterday afternoon, the most I have seen on this trail yet. No big surprise, the weather was quite nice.

Headed out to see if I could spot Comet PanSTARRS. I was unable to get out the night before due to my wife being released from the hospital (yay! :y: ) so I postponed the trip. I was worried I wouldn't be able to see it as it got darker and darker but I finally was able to make it out for about 10 minutes right before it set.

I snuck this one in one the way home from Tucson for work. I wouldn't call this a destination hike, but if you are driving by it is just a few miles off the I-10 and very easy to get to. There is some nice elevation gain going up the radio tower road, and even more if you continue west along the ridgeline. Lots of cholla, so not too dog friendly, but not too many people either making it good for some quick solitude. I thought I would get in a little extra training for the Spartan Race this weekend, so I plowed through all of the elevation gain without any breaks and jogged most of the downhill. I was a little disconcerted to see some broken window glass in the parking lot, but there were some cars there much nicer than mine so I thought I should be OK. :scared:
