Snow flurries at the bottom to start.
Sky cleared at 1 mile to reveal the new snow on top.
Found a new spur trail has recently been built.
I took it up and it was a really cool path up to the boulders!
Much more fun than the original trail.
Half way up I had a rest then back down.
Off trailed back to the TH through the "ranch" area.
Sunset was had out in the flats of western Stockton Pass.
Fun trip
:D

First a lower mountain stop at Angle Orchard for some Saturn hiking peaches.
We then drove up to Ladybug Saddle.
Hiked up to Ladybug Peak to view the million or two ladybugs.
We got buzzed on top by a rattlesnake under some boulders, never saw that sucker.
Then down Bear Canyon to the Dutch Henry/Bear Canyon T and back up.
Last mountain stop was a drive down to Upper Arcadia where we hiked down to the upper crossing to pick some raspberries.
One more stop on the ride home for some ice cream at Joe's Ride-N-Dine ... AZ be being HOT
Good time, great friend ... awesome mountain!

First up to Ladybug Peak ... Wow ... most ladybugs I've seen up there in years!
Next was down Bear Canyon trail to Dutch Henry trail.
Dutch Henry trail all but gone now.
Back up to Ladybug Peak for more ladybugs.

Wanted to show my buddy some prehistoric stuff up in the canyon.
First look at Gillespie Wash was followed by two verbal "Oh :pk:'s "
Wash was flowing like I've never seen, it was more like a river.
We had to come up with a new route up along the north side through thickets & boulders.
Slow going, tricky & a bit unnerving ... but we made it up the canyon to my chosen turn around spot.
Just an amazing site from up high looking down on the canyon floor with all the raging water!
Never made it to the prehistoric stuff, a wash crossing to the sites was too risky.
We finished Gillespie early so decided on a short quick one up Bear Canyon Trail just down the Highway.

Bear Canyon - Started up the trail and ran into a few javelina just off trail.
No big deal until one of the babies with them started "squealing" which caused the mama to get aggressive and bluff charge us a couple of times.
It was a little intense for a bit, but we held our ground and they slowly moved on
At the first clearing we rested with a hot coffee and enjoyed the snowy mountain scenery up high before returning back down.

Winter weather, big time water flow, upset wildlife and a good friend.

Can't believe Me & Addie have never been on the Bear Canyon or Shake trail together.
Well we changed that today.
Started with lower Bear Canyon and climbed it up 2 miles to one of the awesome overlooks.
Heading back down we stirred up some Yellow Jackets and Addie took 2 hits to the neck and stomach.
Damn ... that hurts! I felt so bad for her :(
We then headed a mile down the road and hiked up the Shake Trail to Shake Spring then back.
That's some awesome scenery out there on the back side of Graham.
Cloud cover most of the day with temps still a tad warm for me.
Wildlife spotted, just lots of cattle.
Wildlife felt, 2 Yellow Jackets :x
Always a good time spent outdoors with my (screamin' & cussin') buddy!

Starting from Ladybug saddle and hiking through Ladybug peak, the first 2 miles of this route were relatively easy to follow. Then, the trail became more overgrown and faint. I lost the trail a few times but then ended up finding it again. At the 3.75 mile mark, my plan was to get off the trail and bushwhack to the top of Maverick peak, which is the only way to get there. The brush was so dense, I gave up after 0.2 miles of trying to squeeze through. The brush was full of scrub oak, agave, and some kind of thorned weed which I didn't recognize.

As far as I can tell, the ONLY known ascent of Maverick mountain was from a guy named Mark Nichols in 1990. My understanding is these trails haven't been maintained in 25+ years and from the look of it, it often felt like 50 years!

There are three important highpoints when considering Bear Canyon on Mt Graham's east side. One the footpath is smooth terrain, virtually no rocky paths, top to bottom.(2) There is a trail.(3)the R/T Will not take you 14 hours!! I started late, walked out in dark, don't do that.
There is a safe pull off for your vehicle right off 266. There was a full mile of meandering juniper flatland, which I like in a hike. Then baboom you are swallowed up in the cut peak filled canyon all around you. Views to East of the little known range. The Bear C hike, this area, is not forgiving of bush wacking.. So, take the time, nail down the trail. You will be shined on by the radiant Eastern Sun all the way to 7500 but kind of on your back . So soon, this climb will not be advisable (this is May 1.)
This hike is a very doable day hike for serious hikers, but start early of course. The creme de la creme is the last 1000 feet. All smooth footed full shaded pine forest, and not steep. Bear sign is for sure.We need more foot traffic here, so consider invitation sent.

Bear Canyon 2.0
Last trip up a few weeks ago cut short by monsoons.
Brought a friend along for this redo.
Mostly clear skies to start as we made it up to last trips goal of the big rocky overlook. Relaxed on top for a bit before making our way back down stopping at the creek for a bit more relaxing. Then ..... the skies darkened and it steadly rained the entire hike back down. The canyon looks amazing right now, not quite as green as last trip and I saw a hint of fall starting in several places!
Only suck of the hike is with all this monsoon rain has come lots of sharp & clawy overgroth on the trail, my legs and poncho got pretty tore up.
Happy with this trip and partner!

Back out to Oak Draw.
Hiked out to and around some of my favorite rock formations.
Then out to Bear Canyon.
Wanted to hike up to more rock formations, but big monsoon storms hit and hit hard.
Turned around after only .5 mile and got slammed by rain the whole way back.
Rained on me most of the way back home, Safford got some of it as I found my yard half flooded when I got home.
Wanted more, but a good afternoon spent again in the Draw!

Last hike for the day before heading back to Tucson. This is a short 3 mile in and back hike on the Bear Canyon Trail to the junction with the Dutch Henry Trail. I also took a short excursion up to Butterfly Peak. This again was a really nice trail, easy to follow with very little obstructions in the trail. This trail follows along a ridge that I was fascinated by on last weeks hike. Being a ridge trail, views to the East and West were pretty good. At some point I want to do the Bear Canyon Trail and Dutch Henry Trail from below (will have to wait for cooler weather though.) and by doing the upper 1000 feet now it will make those hikes that much easier.

I would definitely make it up to Ladybug Peak since it is a short .1 miles off the trail. Go visit the ladybugs but walk carefully. Trail sign at the Ladybug Saddle for the Dutch Henry Trail is wrong, should be 1.5 miles.

Started the day with the Shake trail up to Shake spring. Had a 2 hour bush camp at the corrals before returning back down. Light rain just on the way back down.
2nd up Gillespie Wash. Took it up to the windmill then back down and under the Highway heading south. Wanted to check on a cool little prehistoric site up the canyon. Light rain most of this hike.
Last up was Bear Canyon. Hiked up to a little hidden campsite I built a few years back for days just like this. Made a fire, brewed some coffee and planned on sunset here. Many big claps of thunder, light rain now turning to moderate and it was time to ditch sunset and get back to the truck.
Steady heavy rain all the way back to Safford. Flash flood warnings for all of Graham County.

Stockton Pass road & area is always scenic. AZ Highways has featured it before as their scenic drive of the month and for good reason. Add in some stormy skies, some rain & some lightning and well ..... that adds bonus excitement to it all!

Sun up to sun down day trip starting from the top at Ladybug Saddle and working my way down the Swift Trail to the bottom. Ladybugs-spotted owls-berries-apples was the plan ..... 1 out of 4 accomplished :|

Ladybug Peak - Not 1 single bug on top, where are they?
Bear Canyon - Hiked the upper trail down from Ladybug to the Bear/Dutch T. Always an enjoyable scenic stretch down with many very nice places to camp. Had a real nice 2 hour hammock camp here before returning back up to the saddle.
Dutch Henry - Ole Dutch has seen better days, could only get about .25 mile down the path before the mountain starts to reclaim it. This is where the spotted owls live and I believe FS will never (I've heard) repair this trail to help further protect them. No owls found on this once outstanding trail.
Twilight Spring - Drove down to Twilight road and hiked in to the spring. The biggest patches of wild raspberries I've ever found are along this trail and it was not a question of them being there, but will they be there? As I made my way many of the berries had been picked by bears or others?, but there were still plenty left to fill my cup all the way down to the spring. The yellow sunflowers at the spring I anticipated were surprisingly out of peak, but that was OK as I had a cup full of wild berries to eat while I rested. My poo will look amazing soon!
Jacobson Sawmill - I then drove down to Jacobson and hiked in to the old Cluff Dairy to maybe pick some apples. Arrived to see way too many people camping at the dairy and that ended my apple picking dreams. The worst decision FS ever made was removing the gate and allowing people to drive down to this old historic area. Artifacts have been replaced with trash.
Arcadia - Stopped at the CG and hiked down to Wet Canyon to check the creek flow. Wet Canyon continues to flood and I still can not believe what this canyon now looks like since the fire!
RTM CG - Last stop down the Swift Trail was made at RTM for sunset and a walk down to Noon Creek.

No ladybugs, spotted owls or apples, but I did get my berries!
Along the way I spotted - 3 deer, 2 Abert's, turkey vultures, skunk, Mexican jays & a bobcat. Also heard but not spotted were many turkeys (Bear Canyon) and something big breaking tree limbs down in Dutch Henry Canyon ..... maybe a Preston Yeti?
I choose the East side on this day because all of these trails/area were Not affected by the Frye Fire and all looked great ..... I needed a no burn day :)
Wonderful trip!

It still wasn't much, but it was a lot longer and tougher than last week - and I felt much better before, during, and after.
Route scout quit working on me for awhile.
No people - just one pretty little deer who I disturbed from her rest under a juniper tree.
Pleasantly surprised to find a nice bit of water running down Bear Canyon, given the lack of a decent snowpack.

Checked with a buddy on the status of Grant Creek, my favorite #1 trail on the Pinalenos' south side is still in bad shape from the fire, so my #2 Bear Canyon was the choice today.
I just went up a couple of miles to reach the cool boulder section and off-trail to a favorite little spot tucked away where I like to spend time. I arrived and set up a day camp where I spent the next 3 hours just doing my solitude nature campy thing.
The weather all day was mostly dramatic clouds and it sprinkled on me many times :y:
The return trip back down was beautiful, the view across to the Greasewoods was awesome, the skies got more stormy looking and I found another great campsite down low built by someone else complete with a fire ring and firewood. Spent the rest of the evening there with a warming fire and one heck of a sunset to the south = 8/10
Wildlife today was 3 young white-tail does running across my path, a turkey gobbling in the canyon & a day time skunk half way down a hole digging with passion.
I miss Grant Creek right now, but Bear Canyon was a very nice alternative for the day!

Motivated by the day before rain I watched hit the upper mountain, I headed up high to the pines .....

Shake Trail - Started the day with an out-n-back down to the meadow hoping for the yellow sunflowers that usually fill up this area in summer. I was not disappointed, a good sea of yellow with much more to come!

Twilight Peak - From the Shake TH a walk across the Swift Trail took me up the "secret/hidden" Twilight trail. The trail has some new tape markers that made it a lot easier to find my way up to the saddle than my last trip! At the saddle, I decided on peak 9592 rather then Twilight. I payed the price on this idea bushwacking the ridgeline north to the highpoint I believe was 9592? There was blood, cussing & the "why" question on this never again adventure.
:D

Ladybug Peak & Bear Canyon Trail - On the way back down I hit up the mandatory Ladybug Peak for this time of the year. True to it's name, there were thousands on top! Within minutes I had them in my hair, up my shorts & down my shoes. Signed the register, took my pics and climbed down removing ladybugs all the way down to the Bear Canyon spur.
I then out-n-backed upper Bear Canyon down to Dutch Henry to finish the day. Only had time for the short upper section, but any section along Bear will always be on my Pinaleno Favs list!

Sunset was had at Ladybug Saddle along with a nice little thunderstorm hitting north over the Gila Mountains.
Wildlife spotted - 4 Does, 2 Abert's, Turkey Vultures, Spiny Lizards, Fungus Beetles, Hawk, Many species of Butterflies & the highlight - 4 nighttime skunks running alongside my truck down the Swift Trail!
Wonderful day on Graham, painful day on Graham, rewarding day on Graham!

Taking advantage of all this scenic snow on Graham before it's gone.
Today I hit up Bear Canyon on the south side.
The drive in on Stockton Pass was very beautiful with the Greasewoods to the left and the Pinalenos to the right still holding a nice amount of snow.
I took Bear up a couple of miles to the west side of Maverick Mountain before turning around.
This trail is in good shape, very nice winter scenery up high & I drove home happy with my choice for the day!

First up, Ladybug Peak from Ladybug Saddle. The ammo box register is gone, has been replaced with a round tin located a little lower down the peak. Ladybugs? I nailed it on this trip! Thousands x thousands of them covering the rocky peak. I was pulling them out of my hair, clothes & gear for the next 1/4 mile back down (that's a cool thing).

Second up, Bear Canyon down to Dutch Henry. Dutch Henry trail was cleared a few years ago, but once again has become a mess to get down. Only made it a 1/2 mile down before it became too much work to enjoy.

Third up, climbed back up to the Bear Canyon trail and took it down a ways off the south end of the mountain. Great views as always with monsoon storms in the distance moving in, was time to get back on the other side before they hit.

Last up, a short trip down the Ladybug Trail for the northern valley views before heading back up and down to Ladybug Saddle.

I ended with a short drive up the Swift Trail for sunset at the Arrow Tree overlook. Watched the sun go down and the storms move off the mountain never hitting the top. Not much on the ground for wildlife, but I saw and heard it all in the trees and sky today! Spotted owls, vultures & squirrels to name a few.
Another day well spent on Graham.

Had to wait an hour for the freezing fog to lift this morning before heading out to play in the Pinalenos new snow. Loaded the new VH album into the Ipod and headed out to the SE Stockton Pass area where I know the snow won't last long and chose the Bear Canyon trail. The first couple of miles had just a few patches of snow and was no problem as I weaved my way up through the cool boulder sections and past Maverick Mountain. I started to hit snow on the trail at the 6500 foot level and by the 7500 foot level, I was in it up to my ankles and then the trail got tough! My socks were now starting to get wet, but with only a half mile left to get up to the saddle I couldn't turn back now. I continued up the switchbacks now in knee deep snow stopping & resting at every switchback and almost turning back 3 times. I thought I had another few switchbacks left when unexpectedly I came around a corner and there was the Bear Canyon/Ladybug Saddle/Dutch Henry intersection trail sign! I made it and I think for the first time ever on a hike, I gave out a victory yell! The top was a complete winter wonderland and was very beautiful complete with frozen pine tree tops and ice sickles hanging from the branches. I was now in need of a long rest, but the top was covered in deep snow so I had to hike back down a mile before finding a clear spot for a short nap. Reenergized I made it back down in no time and was very happy to finally have completed this outstanding trail. I never dreamed of completing it it snow, but that just made it 2x awesome! I've been hiking the last 2 years now with a bad back (slipped disc) so the elevation & snow on this one had me in a lot of pain and demanded a stop at Roper Lake on the way home for a long soak in the hot tub at sunset. Saw no signs of bear in Bear Canyon, but I had some great encounters with 6 white-tail does low on the trail and 3 coatis higher up while crossing one of the canyon washes.

This is one of the better Pinaleno climbing trails IMO - The trail is in great shape, lots of wildlife and awesome views to the south of the Greasewoods/Galiuros/Dragoons/Dos Cabezas Mountains. And btw, the new Van Halen stuff is worth the buy!

Drove up to Ladybug saddle for one more hike on the mountain before the fire closure. First climbed up to Ladybug Peak and was able to see both the Wallow & Horseshoe two fires clearly from the peak. I then hiked down the trail to the Bear Canyon/Dutch Henry Y and sat for a minute trying to decide on what trail I wanted to do. Have never done the upper half of Bear Canyon or any of the Dutch Henry so I literally flipped a coin to decide, Dutch Henry it was. I only made it about 1.5 miles down on the recently worked trail until it became obvious where the work had stopped and the trail became too overgrown to continue. FS told me that they plan to clear the rest of this trail to the bottom by the end of summer. On the hike back out I had a cool encounter with an owl and a sudden & brief encounter with a bear that took off down the hillside breaking tree branches the whole way down. We both scared each other pretty good! Made it back up to the saddle and drove back down the mountain bummed that this will be my last hike up here until the monsoons come.
