Laid back Sunday morning hike in Gold Canyon from the Hieroglyphics TH. Did a loop with Gold Canyon, Cougar, Gila Monster, K and Lost Goldmine Trails. I hadn't hiked Gila Monster in 9 years already so this made it kind of new.

The views up on the south side of Superstition Mountain behind Turks Head are always nice. Very few hikers, saw only 2 and one biker early on. Lot was nearly empty when I got back, which is a big contrast from when the weather is nicer and it's packed. Seems like many people were getting back when I did, having the same idea to beat the heat. The weather actually never got too hot, so it was very pleasant all around. Saw a snake at the very end of the hike that got off the trail fast and hid under a palo verde, but I was still able to get a shot.

Went out to the Peralta foothills via the Hieroglyphic TH for a Sunday hike. Made it up as I went along to try to get to 7 or 8 miles. the 2nd half of the hike I saw quite a few cattle. Some ran away and others lingered and stared as I walked by.

It was hot at first as the sun hit the horizon and then when the clouds came out things got cooler. Saw a few bikers here and there but no other hikers.

The seasonal Equinox is "Cougars Shadow" time in Cougar Canyon on Superstition Mountain's West facing canyon. The spring outing is usually a madhouse along Goldfield Road, between Broadway and Superstition Blvd with all parking areas filled with observers watching for the Cougar to show itself, while the Autumn showing in September is to early for the Snowbirds so I usually have the whole area to myself.

From a few years of photographing this phenomena, I have been able to predict the day when the Cougar is in its best form. Prior to and after this date, the shadow is less distinct but still undeniable as a Cougar chasing its prey down the side of the canyon. I usually search for alternate shooting locations, but I always try to minimize my shots including the powerlines and pole that pass through ](*,) . HINT! The best view is from a location where you can see both sides of the wash at the bottom of the Canyon.

Clouds, especially when they're out along the Western Horizon are the nemesis for Cougar Watchers as the Cougar's best shape occurs in those final moments prior the the setting of the sun. The last few minutes are critical as the shape is changing and the shadow is fading :o then it's finished, and the traffic jam begins.

We were thoroughly drenched as far from the truck as possible. 8) Hiked the road on the return because the Cougar Trail isn't dog friendly. Too much cholla.

I went back to this area to check some more trails that I saw a while back. I took the Cougar Trail south, then took the narrow unnamed trail that hugs the fenceline all the way down to the Old Horse Trail and headed east. I took the Quartz Ridge Trail south and took the one spur I saw 5 years ago, which didn't actually go far, just to a dirt road at the bottom of the hill. I decided to hike that road a bit and found that after a mile or so, it ends at Peralta Road. I turned back and too that road back up to the Old Horse Trail again and looped back onto the Quartz Ridge Trail. There was an even newer section I found that heads to the west and ends at the neighborhood. From there I took the narrow fence trail again back to trailhead.

Weather was super muggy and very hot. Breezes sometimes made it a little pleasant, but I was drenched for most of the hike. Saw one biker the whole time and saw a longhorn steer twice who was also walking the roads and trails. Finished up a little early and got out of the swampiness.

Trying to find legal places to hike with all the forest closures, just like everyone else. I haven't been out in this area for a few years, so it seemed like a good idea. Lots of parking, not too crowded. Weather was pretty humid, but the clouds kept the temperature down so it wasn't too bad. Only saw bikers, no other hikers until I was done and some arrived at the trailhead at the same time I did.

Started southbound on the Cougar Trail, then headed north towards the Lost Goldmine Trail, then south again to the Gila Monster, K, and other various trails. did a few sections of roads that I hadn't hiked before. Ended on the Old Horse Trail and hiked that back to the parking lot to complete the loop. When I got onto the Old Horse Trail, I saw a deer in the wash running away, didn't get a chance to get a pic.

Hiked one new section of single track I hadn't done before and some sections of dirt road. I was checking my old GPS tracks and official routes on HAZ for some trails south of the Old Horse Trail that I haven't done yet that look like some good options until the forests open.

Finished a little early and got out of the swelter.

Two weeks ago while doing Chuparosa Canyon, I saw a spur off of the Lost Goldmine Trail that headed southeast. Today I took the family out for a quick morning hike and decided to do some exploring to see where it goes. It quickly turns south and then parallels a fence and goes all the way down to the Old Horse Trail. Along the way down there is another spur to east that connects to the Cougar Trail. Along the Cougar Trail there is another trail segment that connects it to the Lost Goldmine Trail. We did all these new trail segments that I haven't ever hiked before, then took the Lost Goldmine Trail back to the trailhead.

Right where we got back on to the Lost Goldmine Trail there was another junction there that headed north up into Chuparosa Canyon. That might be an interesting hike to see if it meets up with the other trail I did last week that fades away as it also heads up into that canyon.

A quarter mile in, Natasha noticed a gila monster in dried grass that I had just walked right by. I got one semi-ok pick before he ducked into a bush. A few miles later we spotted the second one of the day right on the Cougar Trail. Lucky enough to see 2 in one day again. I think 2 years ago in Lost Dutchman park we saw 2 on the same hike. Don't think I've ever seen one on a hike that wasn't in April.

Saw a few other hikers but it wasn't too bad until we got back to the trailhead and the hordes were headed up to Hieroglyphic Canyon as usual. Weather is starting to get warmer, but still not bad. Saw a white Xterra in the parking lot parked next to might that also had a hikearizona.com sticker on the back. Ended the morning with lunch at Rudy's BBQ.

The previous entrance I used to start from when biking the Gold Canyon Trail system is now blocked off due to excessive use by ATV's so we had to continue on to Cloudview. Not a big deal but for the fact most of my plan is now out the window. Oh well, all Tracey asked for was a 10-mile hike so we'll make it up as we go.

Our route took us on the following trails: Lost Goldmine, Transition, TD, Old Horse, unnamed new-to-me, K-Trail, Mohave, Gila Monster, 2GM, Cougar and finally Gold Canyon back to the TH.
We spotted a few other new trails so I'll have to return to do more exploring... which I'd like to do while biking. One more week and I very likely will get the ok to start biking again.

It was a blah day for photos so I took none... besides I have plenty of the area already.

I had yet to ride the Diamondback, Phantom (newest trail) and the northern leg of Gila Monster so my plan was to make sure I hit them all sometime during the day and I managed to do just that.

I drove in from Peralta Road to point just west of Transition trail. I started the ride heading west along a road until connecting with Old Horse Trail and followed it all the way to the west end of the trails. From there I hit all the following: Cougar, 2GM, Gila Monster, Diamondback, K-Trail, TD, Transition, Old Horse, Phantom, Kikki, Old Horse, TD and back to start.

While riding Transition I met Darth Stiller and had the pleasure of meeting his family. Like me, they were enjoying the great hiking/biking weather as well. Great to see you again Chris!

Phantom was absolutely NASTY!!! :scared:
Fully SEVENTEEN wash crossings in one mile, at least half of which were VERY steep on both down and uphill side along with four straight drops of 4-6 feet, all of which I walked my bike around. I will never ride it again... At my age injuries take way too long to heal so I have no problem walking the gnarly stuff.

I was hoping to surpass my longest ride (24 miles) in the Gold Canyon Trail system but the Phantom Trail really took it our of me and had to settle for 10 miles less. At least I made it through the whole ride without any major incidents, and not one fall.
:y:

Hip issues have been my nemesis on hikes lately but biking seems to be ok so I figured I'd try a longer ride. But where?

Well, it's been just over a year since I last biked in this area so after catching up on Darth Stiller's triplogs of hikes out here and not recognizing all the trail names I figured it was time to hit it up again.

Wow! What a difference a year makes. While I rode on some of the trails for the first time, almost every trail I had ridden last year has changed, some more so than others. Suffice to say, most have become more technical.

Hmmm... let's see if I can remember all the trails I biked on all or at least part of, in order:
- Old Horse (Relatively smooth, could get some speed)
- K Trail
- Kiki
- Secret (Tight, steep & rocky)
- Snow Bird
- TD
- Outer Limits
- Don't Fence Me In (Did this northbound, would have been more fun southbound)
- Lost Goldmine (Not being a bike trail as such, I did my share of hike-a-bike here)
- TD (Lots of tight turns, regularly picked up cholla balls when I couldn't turn tight enough)
- Coyote (Between TD & Transition is fast & easy. If I recall from last year, Coyote to Don't Fence Me In is more technical)
- Transition (Lots of tight turns and some ups-and-downs)
- TD
- Tech Loop (I didn't spend much time on it, the one-after-another steep & rocky ups-and-downs took tons of effort)
- Old Horse
- Vortex (Getting tired by now so I did a bit of hike-a-bike on the climb to the rocky peak)
- Gila Monster (Tight switch-backs were almost the death-of-me)
- Cougar (A virtual highway compared to the rest of the ride)

Back to the Jeep to refill the CamelBak... drank 20 oz before starting, drained 100 oz completely, added 64 oz,
drove the Jeep a little way into the State Trust Land then embarked on the last trail I had planned on trying out... Quartz Ridge.

It didn't last long... the steep climb with plenty of sharp, loose rocks was a bit much after already riding for 4 hours and almost 20 miles so I turned around halfway up... only to have a few good scares on the descent.

But I'm still not ready to quit, so now what? I followed a road over the ridge and took it all the way over to Peralta Road and back. Although I noted the temp of 105 on the return trip it felt much cooler than when I began almost 5 hours prior. 105° @10% humidity and a slight breeze feels MUCH better then 88° @38%, which is what it was when I started.

I feel great now some 6+ hours later, let's hope I feel ok tomorrow... and the next day.

While the weather is still nice, I decided to take the family out for a Sunday morning hike. We also invited our friends and their son. We went out to the Hieroglyphic Trailhead and took the Lost Goldmine Trail, avoiding the crowd of people that were forming a line along the Hieroglyphic Trail. My intent was to make the hike a minimum of 6 miles. My son just turned 10 and my daughter will be 12 this summer, time to start ramping up the mileage a bit to match their abilities.

At the start of the hike we noticed the sign for the Cougar Trail, which I had never seen before. We decided to stick with our plan to hike the Lost Goldmine Trail, but later once we saw how the Cougar Trail meets up again with the Lost Goldmine Trail almost 2 miles further, we decided we would take the Cougar Trail back to make it a loop.

Just after we hit the 3 mile mark, we turned around and had lunch at one of the very few shady spots along the trail. There’s also another trail I found at about the 2.8 mile mark that heads south and doesn’t have any marker. On our way back we took the Cougar Trail and found that it heads quite a bit to the south before heading back north to the trailhead. Our total mileage for the day was 6.8, which is a new record for my kids. I got back to the parking lot a good 15 minutes for everyone else did. I had stopped a few times, taking my time taking pictures and they hadn’t caught up. At one point I became convinced that they probably turned back and took the Lost Goldmine Trail to the trailhead. By the time we were done, everyone had pretty much used up all their water.
This hike was also a trial run for my new Camelbak Fourteener, which is very nice. I packed it full with extra water for all of us, and once we were done with lunch, it was already empty.

Lots of flowers blooming in the desert. First time this year I’ve even seen some saguaros starting to bloom.

Create-a-loop in the Superstition foothills. After a week away from the trails this was enjoyable even with 100-degree temps and no breeze.

This can be combined with the Lost Goldmine Trail to make a nice loop starting and ending at the Heiroglyphic trailhead or discover many other connecting trails in the foothills. Nice work on these trails and signed well. Great for mountain biking or hiking. The route I show for this date has me starting at the site of the old Apacheland movie set, which is an alternate trailhead.
