Early morning hike out at Cave Creek. Got there a bit premature. Hade to wait for the gates to open at 6am. :( Parked at the Slate TH and took the Slate to the beginning of the Flume. Took the Flume out to the South side (about 2.47 miles from TH), but opted not to do the road section of the Flume. Instead, I followed rock gabions into the wash and out to the Cave Creek Bridge. Went under the bridge and tagged the trail in the North Sonoran Preserve (I think it is the Cliff Walker Trail), and turned around. Some interesting remnants near the bridge. A signed parking area, which I’m not sure how you would get to, several cement platforms and a couple of benches. I’ve been out this way at least once before, but I don’t recall these artifacts. The mind is a terrible thing to waste. Sadness. Took the same trail back to the TH.

Perfect weather. Only saw 5 hikers near the last .5 miles of my hike. Quail was the extent of the wildlife.

Flume trail starts on an old road. After about a mile you join a true trail, gladly. Altho the first 1/2 mile of that is adjacent to homes. The next 1/2 mile gets away and the final 1/2 mile is where the EG is.

Next knocked out quartz trail. Started seeing more people here. Ended up at Slate TH. Go John-Overton-Clay Mine. Clay Mine near Rd, horse rentals and ends at camp grounds. Meh

Closed out lower section of double loop before heading back on Flume. Some of the EG was from Go John. 2nd section of trails now complete on HAZ. Not bad considering this page only shows a fraction of what I've done. PHX season is upon us.

Mid morning hike in the Cave Creek Regional Park system. Wanted to hike the Flume to gather info for a trail description. I ended up hiking the Flume and then briefly revisiting the Cave Creek Wash. I followed a Cave Creek trail sign (trail doesn’t have a specific name) across the wash and into the community. This trail seemed to end at 50th st. and E New River Rd. Interestingly, there was a bike race course laid out by Moose Racing that used as the Flume trail and then turned down the route I followed and went into the community. I saw pink ribbons going along the roads where I turned back. The Flume trail hasn’t changed much since my last visit. I will say that the “use trails” have been nicely camouflaged. Trails that I followed years past, have been revegetated, making them hard to pick out. Weather was nice which explained the crowds. I only encountered 4 hikers and 2 bikers, but I people in front and behind me for most of the hike. Parking lots were full. Saw a coyote and a few lizards.

Started at Flume TH at the end of E Old River Rd. Service Rd for .9 of a mile then left on Flume. We then went East or right on Slate until we reached our turn around bench. In a little over 2 hours we did not see anyone. Started about 9 AM.

Judy and I. Started at the Flume TH at the end of E Old River Road then went left on Flume TR, followed until we came to function with Slate Trail. Went right for about 1/3 of a mile so our turnaround was at 2.5 miles. Talked with a hiker with a long sleeve Phantom Ranch t-shirt on. She said some friends were down at the ranch recently and the dorms were closed, only cabins open. Takeout only at the canteen and you could not sit on the picnic tables in the area.

Started at the Flume TH at the end of E Old River Road then went left on Flume TR for 2 miles and turned around. This was not our planned hike today but learned at the pay station that there were running races this morning. 50K, 35K, 22K, 12k, 5k. We were thinking we could find some trails without color tape markings....no luck so drove over to Flume.

Went right for about 1/3 of a mile so our turnaround was at 2.5 miles. Not many people out today even with us starting at 9 AM. Talked with a horse rider who was riding her horse solo for the first time. She told us it was wild only 2 years ago...gave them a big congratulations : app :

Started at the Flume Trail TH at the end of E Old River Rd. Walked .83 miles to the junction of Flume Trail on the left and unnamed trail on the right that goes South toward Carefree Hwy. Kai and I took this new trail for us that’s marked with large wire basket carins. While the trail is marked with about half dozen carins I zigged where I should have zagged and followed a neighborhood horse trail for about 150 feet before bushwhacking a short distance to get back on course. The area was more interesting than I Imagined because it’s close to Cave Creek (dry) so there’s enough water to support lots of vegetation.

It was fun to walk under Carefree Hwy, I’ll post a few pics. Came back the same way.

Greg mentioned he wanted to try this loop as no one on HAZ had done it yet. He had mapped it out at a little over eleven miles. Sounded good to me so once it cooled down; we hit the trail. It was in the mid-40s when we started from the P.A. Seitts Trailhead. Between the two of us, we've hiked most of these trails; well actually, Greg has hiked all of them.

At the turn off of Military Trail when we headed up Flat Rock I spotted what looked like some tailings so they might warrant some investigation. I did take a photo altho it was a bit blurry; maybe I hadn't warmed up yet. Flat Rock is such a nice gradual hill. We took a quick break here before heading north and then west on the Quartz Trail to join up with the Go John Trail. Eventually on the Go John we hit the burn area :( . Neither Greg or me had hiked this north section since the fire. We were not looking forward to it.

It was interesting how the trail created a bit of a firebreak. Also, it looked the fire crew had clipped lots of the jojoba which we thot was interesting. It is already growing back. However, the fire did jump the trail here and there. As we came down the northside the :lone: :lone: commenced. We saw several large saguaros that are no longer with us. But, impressively there were two big-leafed brittlebush alongside the trail that had survived the fire so go figure. But from here on, for most of this north section, it was sad to see all the burn. There were patches of green but not much. Even the cholla were either completely missing or down to nubs. The barrels were now bleached white and of course, several had fallen over.

The lighting was not the best so we really didn't get any great pictures of it nor did we really want to take many as we were in mourning. We took a break at the bench at the bottom of Go John and checked out some of the burned flora around us. As we started up the hill the burn continued to be bad. The bareness of it all made it seem so foreign to us. I also like the grade of this longer hill. Greg had one favorite corner but you can't even recognize it now.

Finally we were hiking on Overton where we started to encounter a lot more traffic. Greg pointed out to me another route we can do using the West Boundary and Clay Mine so we'll have to give that a try. In the distance behind Shaw Butte we saw a plume of smoke, mostly light grey. It was from a fire downtownish. We took a rest stop at the Overton Picnic area and had a short conversation with one of the winter workers who has been coming here ten years from WI.

Next up was the Slate Trail which is a pretty nice trail. We did encounter a few hikers here. We paid our respects to the Michelin saguaro before making the turn on the Flume Trail. The Flume Trail goes through a drainage area and is not the smoothest. I finally got to see its namesake, what was left of the flumeage. I noticed on the satellite map the name "Florida" in between Flume Trail. I googled it but couldn't find anything. I did find this link that lists the mines in the area https://thediggings.com/places/az0132413182/mines

And then it was exit left and we started heading east for our road walk thru a very interesting neighborhood that included a hen house with some active roosters; and soon we would hear some coyotes. There was also one house that had some incredible landscaping. Once back at the vehicles, little did we know, this was my last after-hike beer with Tonto Jr.... but what a way to go out. Thanks Greg for including me on one of your goals. Great combo and I hope as Cathy's surrogate I did okay. oh, and I almost forgot; I went over 500 miles with this hike today. Those "'hood walks" added up, ha!

Don't read this article before you go to bed as it's way  . Photosynthesis is so important! Here is a great article that you can scroll down to the part that specifically talks about saguaro fire damage: https://janemming.com/2019/11/09/sonora ... us-forest/ It also talks about the results of fire on other desert flora. I was quite surprised by the Ironwood Tree info. Even if you just read the info below the pictures, it is a quick way to get information.

I've always wanted to do a loop around the entire perimeter of Cave Creek Regional Park. Mrs. SloFolks is still not able to hike so I had to find a surrogate to do this loop with me. Angela the "tibbernator" was nice enough to join me so we could both work the remaining L-Tryptophan out of our system from our Thanksgiving dinners yesterday. :)

We did a CCW loop starting from the P.A. Seitts Trailhead using the Military, Flat Rock, Quartz, Go John, Overton, Slate, and Flume trails. Route shown in photoset. 8am start and the weather was beautiful for the duration of the trek.

Things looked nice considering the lack of rain until we reached the northern section of the loop and encountered the burn area from the East Desert Fire from last May. I only took one photo of the burn as it was just too depressing. The loss of all the saguaros and flora is very disheartening. :(

We stopped at a ramada near the Nature Center and had some lunch then continued east on the Slate trail. Once on the Flume trail we did some detective work and ascertained how the namesake flumes were being used to direct water for sluicing pay dirt for gold back in the day. Those miners were not lazy!

Great hike with great company. Thanks for joining me Angela. You are handling retirement very well.

We've been meaning to do this little hike for for over 6 months but have put it off for an assortment of reasons. The purpose was twofold...the first being to check out a new trail we had read about in our local paper. The new addition becomes a connector trail which links the Flume Trail in the Cave Creek Regional Park to the Esplanade and Cliff Walk Trail in the City of Phoenix Sonoran Preserve North trail system.

The southern terminus is directly under the Cave Creek bridge on the Carefree Highway. The northern terminus is at the intersection of the Flume Trail and Old New River Road. We started our hike west of this at the CCRP boundary gate. One could also enter from the east at the Desert Enclave parking area just east of the creek.

For long distance trail runners or bikers you can now travel unimpeded all the way from Spur Cross south through the CCRP and then on to the Apache Wash Trailhead on Sonoran Desert Drive. That would make for a great shuttle hike or ride!

The second objective on this hike was to find the remnants of a Hohokam irrigation ditch we were told about by the Desert Foothills chapter of the Az. Archaeological Society. While at one of their talks on crop production in the 12th-14th centuries the speaker talked about the irrigation system branching off of lower Cave Creek to grow crops. We found it even though it was very faint and filled up in many areas. Straight as an arrow though...those guys were good! :)

6 am start. We linked seven trails in the Cave Creek Regional Park to make a loop. CCW route shown in photoset. Used the Military, Flat Rock, Quartz, Go John, Jasper, Slate, and Flume trails. It got very warm the last couple of miles. When will summer ever end? ](*,)

If cooler temps ever arrive I'd like to add the remainder of the Go John and the Overton trail to this loop to create an 11 mile "super loop" around the park.

Judy and I have tried several different hike locations in the last few weeks and have settled on this one. It’s close to home (12 minutes), nice wildflower selection and varied views. It’s an out and back so we just agree before we start how far we want to go. Today was a 2.5 mile turnaround. Plus very few other hikers/bikers... today we saw a single hiker and one couple in a little over 2 hours 👍.

Just Judy and I again. Kai got a this Thursday ACL surgery date. This time we stayed on E. Old River Rd and walked past the Flume Trail left turn off. Took it down into Cave Creek creek bed until we came to Town of Cave Creek Trail system. We quickly got into a neighborhood as it took us within about 30 feet of their back fences. Don’t want that so backtracked until we found the trail that follows the creek bed. When that ran out we took a neighborhood trail up and West to Flume Trail. Followed about 2.5 miles and went back on Flume Trail.

Judy and I both like the vistas and lack of traffic...just wish there was a little more AEG. Rare when you get everything you wish for.

Judy and I are trying to find less used trails to reduce the number of people we pass on the hike. We are moving way off the trail before we pass others so we control the distance between them. Smiling now at the two ladies that came right up to my back shoulders and asked me what I was looking at when I was off trail with my back to them.

Happy that except for .3 of a mile on Slate Trail we had not previously hiked any of this route. Passed 8 others which surprised me, but lots of room to move over off trail. We started at 9 AM and I’m sure we would have seen fewer had we started at 8.

Went out 2.5 miles and turned around.

After work jog in Cave Creek. Not one of my favorite trails to run on. One of the rockier trails in CCRP, but it does have some nice segments. Did a small lasso. Went in on the Slate and then took the Flume around the hill to where it connects to the road. Technically, the Flume continues west alon the dirt road. Instead, I followed a nice single track into the wash. It's been years since I've played with the trails in this area. Someone has added "Sedonaesque" cairned baskets that head off to the south. (I don't believe those cairns were there the last time I hiked the area). Since my goal was to get about 5 miles, I headed north along a user trail upon entering the wash. It was probably around .5 miles when I came across the the trail that connected back to the Flume. Once back on the Flume, I retraced my steps to the Slate and then back to the TH. Weather was gorgeous . Saw 1 dog walker and that was it.

This was just a workout hike but we made the loop a little larger and took a few photos so I thought we might as well post a log.

We started at the P.A. Seitts Trailhead and did a CCW loop using the Military, Flat Rock, Quartz, Go John, Jasper, Slate, and Flume trails returning us back to the trailhead. The batteries died in my GPS so I don't have the route to post, but those of you familiar with the park will know the loop. Next time we plan on adding the northern section of the Go John and the Overton into the mix which should make the loop about 12 miles. Need a cooler day for that though. We were freezing at the start today, but as soon as the sun came over Black Mountain it got almost too warm.
