Flume trail starts on an old road. After about a mile you join a true trail, gladly. Altho the first 1/2 mile of that is adjacent to homes. The next 1/2 mile gets away and the final 1/2 mile is where the EG is.

Next knocked out quartz trail. Started seeing more people here. Ended up at Slate TH. Go John-Overton-Clay Mine. Clay Mine near Rd, horse rentals and ends at camp grounds. Meh

Closed out lower section of double loop before heading back on Flume. Some of the EG was from Go John. 2nd section of trails now complete on HAZ. Not bad considering this page only shows a fraction of what I've done. PHX season is upon us.

Another north valley hike on nicely groomed trails. Following rain last night ending this morning, we got going to cloudy breezy conditions. Trails were wet with some mud but easily avoided. Some light rain fell while we were hiking.
We hiked up Go John trail until we were into the clouds. Pretty cool.
The flora out here looks good and green, especially the saguaros.
Saw some deer, bunnies and birds.
Fun hike. Coffee, breakfast, and a quick stop to visit college friends after the hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

Wanted to get a few miles in today so I imagine-hiked this in my head; I used to do that type of thing before competitions, especially o-mok-sees. It went okay today except I, for some reason, struggled up Go John when heading north. I was originally going to go in the AM but since I wasn't doing any significant elevation, I changed my mind and went in the afternoon. It was delightful.

I had to retrace my way back to the VC to download my podcasts as the internet didn't seem to work well at the parking lot. I went back to the lot and headed east on the Go John Trail. I haven't gone this way for a while but I was looking forward to it. Everything is just a tad longer and steeper than I remember but just right for me today. The trail tread was in decent condition so it was a pleasant journey as I got up the trail and around about three curves before topping out. I saw about 4 hikers toward the beginning and none until I reached the Jasper Trail.

I headed down and over to the Quartz Trail and then up and around this mountain. The trail was partially in shade off and on. It was another pretty day as I continued down via our beautiful desert decor. I enjoyed all the saguaros and golden grasses and the Ironwood Trees looked pretty good. I'm sure they're all looking forward to next week's rain🙏; I know I am. I passed by the quartz outcropping and down to the teddy bear cholla junction with the Slate Trail where I headed west.

The desert is still pretty awesome around here with very tall saguaros; altho there were a few fallen soldiers at this point :( . It makes you appreciate those that still remain and dominate the terrain; especially as you come to this one area that is a bit of a forest on the northside of the trail. I would see three people just before the Jasper Trail junction. The Jasper Trail is awful tread because of the horses and it has a slight uphill, deep dirt and rocks. Fortunately, it's short.

I arrived back at the parking lot and headed over to the Go John Trail which I normally enjoy. I saw another hiker who complained about avoiding the horse manure; I told her it didn't bother me. Another hiker passed me going up the hill. I was at mile four and suddenly, I started breathing hard and decided to pull over in the shade and sit for a moment. And then I started slowly up the trail but had to take my time.

Perhaps I should have rested more as I struggled up this and had to rest a couple times. I like this trail as I've been doing it for a long time and I still remember the first time back in 2006 I think it was. It seems they dropped a bunch of rocks for erosion control on a little bit of that last 1/2 mile, so that was quite annoying. I made it to the saddle and rested for just a moment on the bench. It's a great view.

From the saddle it is shaded most of the way until you arrive at the Overton junction. I was glad it was downhill since apparently, I seemed out of uphill steam. The Overton Trail is a fun trail with some nice switchbacks on the west side. The golden grasses at the top were certainly glowing. I tried to make up time from my uphill debacle. However, at the bottom I started to get really tired so I pulled out a Sport Bean and for whatever reason, that darn thing worked again. (I must get these sudden sugar drops so it doesn't seem to take much to bring me back.) The trail tread is pretty decent but it does take a little longer than you think to get around this west side before heading east. I ran into a couple hikers here.

Once again, the horse wear showed on this tread as it was sandy and deep. There were a couple little hills that fortunately were small enough not to slow me down too bad. And finally I rounded the corner and crossed the wash to join back up with the Go John to finish off my CCRA foray. I had started looking forward to my beer about a mile back; that keeps me going  and my pace is a tad quicker. But I still don't like that beer so the last four cans will be a Xmas present for someone.

Deborah had come to town to retreive her RV from storage to take it back home to Flathead Lake. She stayed at Usery for a couple nites before heading up to Cave Creek Regional Park for a couple nites. So I put together a little hike we could do. She had hiked in the area last year. I picked her and Duke up and we headed out from Go John parking area.

We hiked up Go John and then hung a left at Clay Mine Trail and on to Overton. There were a couple bike riders that took off at the same time (counterclockwise up Go John/down Overton) and we would see them as we started on the Overton. The Overton still afforded us some shade so that was nice. We passed a group that were with a ranger apparently doing the flora tour. We would encounter a few other hikers as we headed up to the north saddle. The breeze also seemed to pick up and stayed with us for the hike off and on :) .

I did notice some wildflowers on our hike including a couple Delphinium, several Tansy Aster, lots of Buckwheat, a couple Mariposa Lilys, a few Desert Trumpets and some waning Owl Clover as well as others I'm not sure of. As we hiked south up the Go John I pointed out to Deborah where the old trail went before the reroute in 2007 (it used to go right next to the mine on the north side). Going down the hill always seems a little longer than I anticipate as there is an extra switchback in there that I forget about.

The gusty breeze really picked up as we got further down the hill. We almost got blown over by a big gust of wind and dust. I decided it was still cool enough to continue the hike so we headed east on the Go John and hooked up with Jasper to Slate. We stopped by the Michelin Saguaro. I didn't realize there was a bench with a little trail there; I guess I hadn't gone this way in a while. We also saw a couple bunnies cross the trail. We continued east up and down through the little gullies before arriving at the Quartz Junction where we sat at the bench, had a snack and enjoyed the view. The teddy chollas were starting to bloom. Oh, Duke was now a dusty Duke (he's a small black dog).

We headed on back only seeing two other hikers as we continued on the Slate Trail rather than taking Jasper. We did notice a couple saguaros with some blooms. We got back to Tonto 3 and then drove to the covered picnic area to have a beer. The ocotillos were blooming prolificly in this area.

After breakfast we decided to cross the creek on foot while we still could before the rain to get in one of our close to home loops. The creek was running pretty strong but with waterproof shoes we had no problem finding a way across.

Wildflowers were really starting to pop but no Brittlebush yet even though the desert is loaded with it. It will be a sea of yellow up here in a week or two.

Met a fellow named Craig on the Go John Trail who was with the Desert Foothills Land Trust and we hiked with him for a couple of miles and had some good conversation. We also got in some great petting with two good horses and two good dogs. :)

A Mystery Solved :y:
The highlight of the hike was solving the mystery of a spring box that @tibber found during a hike with Cathy, @trekkin_gecko , and @LindaAnn . The box had a 8" diameter pipe in the bottom that made no sense at all.

We did some sleuthing and found the pipe exiting the ground in some nearby trees and we followed it to an old underground pump house just off the flood plain of the creek. The 12 by 12 foot pump house had a well and a kerosene engine to pump water up to the box for horses and cattle. The old corral on the Military Trail is nearby so this made sense. You don't need that much pump and pipe to fill a 8 foot shallow cement box so I'm guessing there was also some irrigating going on for crops back in the day. The word "well" is even on one of the HAZ topo maps of the area on Route Scout. 👍 I didn't find that until just now while writing this log. Photos in photoset.

Solo training/conditioning hike using a backpack and heavier boots. The extra weight combined with the humidity kicked my :pk:. I added the little Menk Overlook Nature Trail at the end.

This area is going to be a bloom-a-palooza in very short order. Loads of poppies on the Go John Trail but they were all closed up due to the cloud cover. The rain in tomorrows forecast should be great timing for the flowers.

CW loop starting from the P.A. Seitts TH. I was the first car at the TH and temp was 44*. After just one mile it was the warmest 60 degrees I've ever felt. The sun was just so intense it felt like 90. Funny how that works. I only ran into 2 people and they had both left from the VC to the east. I was surprised to see 9 cars at my TH when I was done. Where the heck did they all go?
The desert up here still looks nice but I'd love to see some rain sooner than later.

Goal to hike with Judy once a week. My pick today so we headed over to Cave Creek Regional Park. Parked at kiosk at start of the Slate Tr and headed up Quartz, Go John toward the TH, left on Jasper Tr and right on Slate back to the car. Started about 9 AM and it was getting warm when we finished. The Brittlebush bloom looks like it’s peaked. So so wildflowers compared to some past years.

Thought we would make a loop of the following trails:
1. Slates Trail
2. Military (? not sure about the name, this is on the east end of the loop
3. Flat Rock
4. Go John
5. Jasper

Not to many people until we hit the Go John trail. Not overly impressed with hike, I think the Go John trail was more interesting and had better views.

Solo exercise hike close to home. Clockwise lasso loop starting from the P.A. Seitts Trailhead. Route shown in photoset.

Arrived at the trailhead in the dark but enough moonlight to get started. Two other cars already there when I arrived. I ran into them out on the trail a bit later. They turned out to be two trail runners. I know this because they were running and both had 0% body fat. Observation...both sexes look the same in low light when both have 0% body fat. :|

This is a nice loop that avoids the section of the Go John Trail that burned last year in the East Desert Fire. The temps were perfect and had the trails to myself pretty much. I made good time despite a nagging left hamstring that I can't seem to loosen up. It's been tight for several weeks. I can stretch it out but it doesn't stay. :(

After work jog. Wanted to get a loop involving the Jasper trail. The stables were in full action today. Saw 3 different groups of 5+ riders make their way around the Go John TH. Chilled in my car waiting for the riders to get ahead of me. The riders ended up going down Jasper so ended up doing that on my return trip. Went in on Go John to Quartz to Flat Rock to Military to Slate to Jasper and then back on Go John. First time doing this larger loop in this direction. Like Go John. There is some up to it but it super smooth...ideal for running. Same with the Quartz. Love this trail. Either direction. First time going down Flat Rock and then connecting to the Military. I’ve always done this going the other direction and I think I prefer it that way. Slate is an awesome trail. Love the rock work! Little bit more up going this direction than I remember, but not too bad. Jasper is a really short trail - more of a connector trail. And is definitely a trail used by the horses. Trail is very powdery with horse apples galore! No wildlife. Trails relatively busy....17 hikers, 4 bikers and 1 runner. Weather was great again.

Judy and I today. Slate-Jasper-Go John-Quartz-Slate. Seems to me that there are less hikers/bikers the last few times I've been out. Maybe the Covid rush to the outdoors is dying down a bit.

Same solo loop as 3 days ago [ photo ] but I retraced my steps and went CW instead. The gain seemed more difficult for me going this direction but my overall time was much faster. Maybe because I didn't bring a camera... :-k .

I'm trying to work on quickening my pace as I have a 12 miler coming up soon with a stronger HAZ hiker and I don't want to slow them down too badly. 8-[

I took my first break at the 4.5 mile mark near the high point of the Flat Rock Trail. I pulled out my Gatorade and when I looked back up a dear old friend was coming up the trail towards me. I had not seen him since we last hiked together to the 6L Ranch back in March. Since then he has undergone major surgery on his leg. Great to see him hiking again like nothing ever happened. :y: I had no camera with me so here he is back in March... [ photo ] .

That's right, it's Kai! He had his two pet humans with him, @Sun_Ray (Brian) and his wife Judy whom I had not yet met. Nice to meet you Judy, Kai has said nothing but nice things about you :) .

We spent a few minutes catching up then hiked down the Flat Rock where I turned off on the Military Trail to head back to the creek. Even when terribly dry, the desert up here is extremely beautiful.

Mrs. SloFolks is on a hiatus from hiking, so since I was alone I kept this one close to home. Nice little lasso loop starting at the P.A. Seitts trailhead using the Military, Flat Rock, Quartz, Go John, Jasper, and Slate Trails. Route shown in photoset. So nice to have cool temps at the start and throughout the hike.

Near the head of Go John Canyon I heard the sound of rattling antlers and 5 seconds later two mule deer bucks bound across the trail about 20 yards in front of me and continued to head butt and clank their antlers together. [ photo ] This is too early for the rut so I think these two were probably young buck siblings just practicing their machismo for next spring. They would stop and nibble then fight a little then stop and nibble. This went on until they finally smelled or saw me and then they took off like the wind.

Saw a few bikers and once on the Go John and Slate I had a "Dear Diary" moment...I actually passed other hikers. :o
This doesn't happen much and hasn't in some time, (I refer you to my HAZ name). I became very confused and disoriented at this prospect. For those of you that have hiked with me I swear this is the truth. The different groups I passed weren't even disabled or anything. :D The creek was dry on both crossings. I sure hope we get some rain tonight as projected.

After work jog. Wanted to get a loop involving the Jasper trail. Started on the Slate trail but quickly reached the Jasper which I used to connect to the Go John. Then took the Go John CCW. First time in the Go John since the fire this year. Actually had forgotten that the fire had hit the park. Pretty much everything on the north side got torched, though there are patches of green. Either where the fire jumped or new growth. Be curious to see how some of the saguaros do. Some had browned bases and green tops. Not sure if that is a harbinger of a slow death....trails were crowded for a weekday afternoon. Saw 6 horse riders, 6 bikers and 4 hikers. Wildlife was minimal....5 rabbits.

Hikin' on a Thursday. Still just feels like a long vacation plus I have to work Mon-Wed next week while my replacement retrieves her car from the east coast.

The entrance has a most interesting card reader set up. Picked this clockwise loop to get in some miles. It was a little warmer than I expected. The Clay Mine Trail once you come off of Go John entrance, is tapped down very nicely than when I was on it last as it just barely been cut. I, of course, was looking forward to the shade of Overton as I hiked the western side of this loop. Encountered 5 people two dogs on this section. Introduced one of the hikers to lichen. As you near the top of Overton, I saw some of the burn area so took a few pictures. This part was still in the shade and it's when you get closer to Go John that you can really see more of the burn that swiped across this section. There were a couple really green plants here and there though.

On my way down Go John I encountered 3 more people and then another 3 at the junction with Clay. The 3 at the junction were looking at a map so I advised them about the loop I just did. However, they wanted to get back to Overton and I advised them on that but the one lady with them said, "no, that's not what we want", so I walked away. I continued on Go John to the bench as you get part way up the eastern hill (checked the temp as it seemed warm, it was 80) and then continued toward the Quartz Trail. I did encounter a very nicely dressed gentleman that looked like he should be hiking in the tropics. A+ for style as everything matched beautifully. :)

I took a break at the north Quartz saddle to take a couple bites of my granola bar; however, it had chocolate in it so it was melty and hard to eat. I headed down the Quartz and Slate only seeing one other soul on a bike. So this is what it's going to be like to hike on a weekday. Got back to Tonto Jr and realized I should have brot a beer to drink but I did go ahead and have a brew when I got home; it's just not the same as sitting at the TH. The only wildlife I saw today was a coyote on the drive in, a lizard and a squirrel. Oh, the 360 distant air was VERY smazy this morning; especially around Black Mountain area it seemed; sorry Greg and Cathy.

For my personal record - Watch numbers: 7.29 on miles in 2:36 avging 2.7 MPH and 130 bpm with a high of 155 bpm. I spent 40 minutes at max Heart Zone 5, an hour at Zone 4, an hour at Zone 3. Burned 1069 calories. Watch says it was 68 degrees and 23% humidity but google said it was 80 at 17% humidity.

So far this week I did a hike on Sunday, a hike on Monday and I went to gym class, Wed I went to a new gym class at a different gym, hike today and tomorrow I'll try a different gym and class again (I now belong to 3 gyms, I'd like to say Clubs but Denny calls me out on that  .) Currently that's why my retirement is like: what am I going to do for exercise today?, which reminds me, I need to go book a class for tomorrow AM.

Oh, and once in awhile, don't forget to look back at the trail you've traveled.
