Headed down to the chookas for my first visit up the Carr Canyon Road since 2015. The road was in sedan shape up to the winter gate at the perimeter trailhead. From there it gets a little dicey and even a subi-type vehicle might have trouble in a couple of spots.

I like this range in September, but this year was significantly drier than it was 9 years ago; less green, fewer flowers, and much less flowing water. And it was still great. It was surprising to see a grove of aspens along the Carr Peak Trail have begun their autumn transition.

Temps stayed in the 60s all day, except for the brief visit to Carr Peak where it dropped into the 50s. A light southwest breeze was perfect accompaniment to the day, only reaching irritable levels funneling up and over Bear Saddle.

Got to see another twin-spotted rattlesnake on the Crest Trail (my 3rd ever, after seeing 2 on a trip here three years ago. These guys are tiny, and might have the highest range of any rattlesnake species - up to 11,000 feet. Always a treat to see one.)

We opted against the trip out to Ramsey and instead headed down Pat Scott. The climb up Comfort Springs was as miserable as I remember. I had forgotten about the bonus field of poison ivy to negotiate in the last mile, but managed to wade through it mostly unscathed.

All in all, an enjoyable day in the chookas.

It was apparent that there has been one short night of frost damaging some of the most sensitive flowers. Still a bunch hanging on, but the season will end fast.

Springbox was dry. There's a use path leading uphill toward the point on the topo map that indicates the spring source. I did not hike up to check for water at the source.

Camped overnight at Ramsey Vista, then hiked this gorgeous loop trail. The hike to Carr Peak was very windy, but the summit itself was surprisingly calm and quiet. Found some migrant detritus on the trail up including a Spanish New Testament, snack packaging, and a serape. Picked up the smaller items but couldn’t manage the serape.

Altogether a beautiful trail and a pleasant loop. My first hike in the Huachucas.

What an awesome hike! Loved this today. Wanted to get in a good hike with views with my buddy Jason, and get out of the desert heat. So many fires burning so many good ranges, feel like options are limited these days. Remembered the Huachucas from doing Arizona Trail segment 1, so glad I did. Amazing views, birds chirping all over the place, and the fresh smell of pine in many places. Honestly I think this is one of my favorite ranges in the state. There were a couple of spots where we saw vestiges of illegal activity…oddly places pieces of clothing that upon closer looks revealed unofficial trails, and empty Mexican electrolyte bottles, but not too bad.

Ramsey Vista campground is so nice in that you start hiking at 7200 feet, so no hiking down to lower elevations in the heat of the day. Did the loop clockwise which was a good choice, though there were some warm, exposed spots near the end that were a little toasty even at 7000 ft.

Carr Peak is totally bare and exposed, unreal views. So much of this loop has incredible views, as you get a 360 view from beginning to end.

Surprised by how the AZT was almost totally unmarked in the section we did, especially with all the trails it crosses in that section.

Also surprised that we didn’t run into a single hiker the entire day. Granted it was a Friday, but still! This time of year?! With the limited options we have around Tucson?

Came back to the range to do the loop. I might have waited until after it rained, but options are slim as it's getting hot. The hike is rather hot, but it is June and the sun very strong.

Enjoyable.

Second time in the Huachucas. Threw together a loop that'd see more Crest and get me on top of Ramsey and the brothers Pat Scott. Had a go from the Sawmill TH around 6am. Road is probably doable in low clearance, but I wouldn't if it were my investment.

Sawmill Trail up to Carr Peak Trail. Really just a connector for those of us looking to save a few minutes driving time. Most reliable spring en route was putting out a decent flow and should be for a couple months more.

Carr Peak trail swings up the mountain quickly. Good tread, least tree cover on the day. Carr Peak views hazy in the early morning. Offers the best angle on Miller and time to wonder about the ubiquitous zeppelin down in the foothills.

Down Carr to Crest then out and back to Miller. More good tread this time through the surviving forest of fir and pine. Up the ridge steeper and steeper as it nears the Miller Peak Trail. Passes through a huge, young grove of aspen. There is a lot to see along this loop come autumn, expanding my search for this year outside of Ramsey Canyon. Half the elevation gain is out of the way by the time Miller summit comes. Best views of day, apart from maybe Ramsey.

Crest all the way back to the Carr jct. Clouds started to coalesce over the mountains. Kept going to the Hamburg jct and the track became unfamiliar. Perfect weather for the money stretch of Crest Trail. From Granite Mountain to the end of Crest at the Fort Huachuca border, I'm not sure there's better hiking in the state. It is as good as anywhere. Shady in the fir, cold breeze, and warm intermittent sunlight. Will never take Wisconsin Canyon down again, it is so worth it to loop around to Pat Scott Canyon.

Got Pat Scott #1 on the way to Ramsey and #2 on the way back. #1 is several times better than #2, which is marked as Pat Scott Peak on most maps. Weather increasingly dramatic as I started the climb up Ramsey.

The topos I looked through differed on the whether or not there is a trail to Ramsey, and it turned out there isn't one. Ascending Ramsey was probably the hardest part of the loop. It is easiest to summit if you stay north of the ridgeline, otherwise it is a good bushwhack. Unfortunately, this involves trespassing onto military property. If stepping 50ft into the seldom traveled upper reaches of military land is a deal breaker, I would say the peak cannot be summited using the ridge I did. The only person I met all day was on the summit tinkering with a ham radio when I got there. He came straight up the ridgeline from the preserve, a shorter, more difficult, and legal route. I asked what he made of the military border, and he shrugged. There are no signs marking it, no signs forbidding passage, only a fence line that is broken where the deer cross and somebody has marked the route by hanging reflective yellow flags from tree limbs.

Pat Scott Canyon back down. Just as good as Wisconsin Canyon. Firs, pines, oaks, maples. Really might make a good fall loop if the timing is right. The canyons in the Huachucas steep as anything, but Pat Scott makes easy work of the quick descent.

After that Hamburg for about 5 minutes before Comfort Springs. Beautiful woods on the backside of Carr. Second hardest part of the day was ascending Comfort springs and getting back out of the canyon. Once down around the Hamburg Mine, there was still ~1200 feet to gain. Pushed through that last section looping back around. Only saw the one hiker, not too busy up there. Temps from 40s-70s.

Wanted to hit Carr, Miller, and the Comfort Springs Loop in an effort to step my sky island game up.

Parked down the road from the Sawmill Springs Trailhead at the big Coronado NF sign a little after sunrise because I refused to take my sedan any farther up the road. On the way down the mountain later that day I passed a couple in a Dodge Challenger, so I was probably just being a wimp.

Started at Sawmill and with a summit of Carr. Passed three PhD students from IL and SC looking for Two Spot rattlers and others. They had snake sticks, or whatever they are called, and were looking to collect some venom.

On the trail between the Carr spur and the trail to Miller there must have been twenty-five white tail deer up and down slope.

On the way from Miller Peak to the Comfort Springs turn off I passed three men who were headed up to Miller. They asked about my route and I told them. They remarked that it was a long hike, which was nice to hear after being humbled by the trips many of the HAZ contributors regularly make.

About a mile down from Bear Saddle in Wisconsin Canyon, where on the topo the trail skirts below the 7800ft contour, I came twenty yards from two black bear cubs posed up in a tree next to the trail. Couldn't claw my camera out of my pack in time and they, as well as a third, bigger bear, scrambled down slope. With no pictures and the bears disappeared among the trees, I called out to keep them away.

Rest of the trip was a nice jaunt up and down through the woods on the backside of the mountains. There was a healthy breeze the whole trip, and to my absolute surprise the temperature never rose above 81F.

Only saw those two sets of hikers until I neared the campsites where families had made their way up for the 4th of July.

I posted the RS route and stats for the trip because I'm very skeptical of the AEG. Not sure I did enough rambling around areas of interest to gain almost 1000ft more than about what the route should have been.

The weather is getting warmer and time for me to switch from the Superstitions and find a new location to hike. The Huachuca Mountains were calling me again so I headed down there. It has been a few years since I was there hiking the Arizona Trail, so there are plenty of other trails to do. On this trip I decided to do the Comfort Spring, Hamburg and Carr Peak loop. I have seen multiple write-ups on this loop and it seems like a natural combination of trails. Also took a small excursion up to Carr Peak and the Old Sawmill Spring Trail.
I found the drive up Carr Canyon Road to be about as interesting as the hike. Quite a road going up the side of the mountain that would otherwise seem an unlikely place for a road. The road is narrow with lots of switch backs but I saw every kind of passenger car on this road, so 4WD and high clearance is not a requirement (at least when I went up). I started out on the Comfort Spring Trail which is a fairly easy walk with a little uphill section and a lot of gradual downhill to the Hamburg Trail. The one creek crossing on this trail which I am assuming is Carr Creek was flowing slightly and Comfort spring had about a gallon a minute flow. The Hamburg Trail is a steady uphill climb to the Crest Trail but seemed to go quite quickly. I can tell by the lack of pictures I took along this portion of the trail I was in the slow but steady mode till I got to the top. I love the views along the Crest Trail of the Santa Cruz Valley and also the ever present blimp above Fort Huachuca. A bit of trivia for those who remember the musical Oklahoma, The film location of the house in the movie was in the Santa Cruz Valley to the west of these mountains. The train depot was in Elgin. I had forgotten that the crest trail does some serious climbing to get up to the Carr Peak Trail, It wasn’t a terrible climb but when you’re expecting level walking it has a way of taking the wind out of your sails. I took an early lunch at the junction of the Crest Trail and Carr Peak Trail and for a half hour did nothing but eat and take in the views. The views don’t get much better than this. On the return trip down the Carr Peak Trail I took a side trip up to Carr Peak. Not a real impressive peak just a rounded knob of white limestone/marble stones or pebbles but the views are terrific. I could even see my jeep parked at the trail head below. All the mountains of southeast Arizona are visible (Maybe not all of them but more than I could name) and a few in Mexico. On the return trip down Carr Peak I took a side trip on the Old Sawmill Trail. Not a lot to see along this trail except Oak Grove Spring which had a trickle of water flowing. Got back to the trail head about 2:00 so I would have a little time to check out the Clark Spring and John Cooper Trails on the way down Carr Canyon Road.

Doing some hikes in the southeastern part of the state has been one of my goals for this year. Since the weather looked monsoon-free this weekend, we decided to head to the Huachucas. We arrived at the trailhead at Ramsey Vista Campground around 7:30, and headed up towards Carr Peak. The trail was in good shape, with a relatively gradual incline. Lots of wildflowers all around. By about mile 2, I was already talking about needing a post-hike hamburger and fries, and I didn't shut up about it for the next 12 miles.

We got to Carr Peak, seeing several deer just below the summit, and took a short snack break while enjoying the views. After that, we continued over to the Crest Trail, and south to Miller Peak. The Crest Trail was brushy in places, but not too terrible. We took a lunch break on Miller Peak and watched some rain clouds approach from the south, which spurred us to get back on the trail before any bad weather arrived. We passed 9 other hikers just below the summit on our way back down, and besides 1 solo backpacker we saw earlier, they were the only people we saw all day.

Once back on the loop, we turned on to Hamburg Trail at Bear Saddle, and followed it down to Comfort Springs trail. Descending through the canyon was gorgeous, although the running water made for lots of bugs. Once climbing up Comfort Springs, the bugs disappeared, but a light rain finally caught up to us. It was pleasant to walk through, and there was never any lightning, so we didn't rush, arriving back to the car a little after 3:00. The Huachucas were quite enjoyable, and if they were a little closer to Phoenix, I'd hike there more often.

The Huachucas were amazing. We started up Carr Peak first. It was a short trip to the summit but Linda talking about food already had me reaching into my bag of snacks. This neat little peak offered great views. Crest Trail was especially enjoyable this day. Everything was a vibrant green and wildflowers were abundant. We made our way over to Miller Peak, sampling from almost every raspberry bush along the way. The trail itself was great, tread wise, and beautifully graded. We enjoyed a peaceful lunch atop Miller and soaked in the views. Didn't see anyone else until we started heading down. Otherwise we had the trails to ourselves all day. Heading back down Miller and onto Hamburg Trail brought a change in scenery. The flowers and expansive views were replaced by a lush canyon and flowing creeks. This was a very scenic stretch of trail, plenty of nice looking camp spots down there, as well. Eventually, we'd start to climb back up and out of the canyon. Neither one of us really wanted to, though. We finished out the hike in a light drizzle accompanied by a cool breeze. Can't complain about being cooled off during the last uphill of the day. Truly an excellent hike and a great day in the mountains.

This was my first time to this nice little wilderness area and mountain range and I really enjoyed it. I came down on an invite to join several HAZers from Tucson and Phoenix for some hiking, camping and good times. I was not sure what to expect in terms of hiking, but I had heard good things about Carr, Miller and the wildflowers. The Comfort Springs Loop seemed to be the large group's consent pick, so I also decided to make it my destination for Saturday.

The hike up Carr is not to bad and the trail is in great shape for the most part. There is a little over-growth along the edges, but I imagine that thins out when the hiking season arrives. The views of Sierra Vista and the surrounding countryside were great, but the trail is a little bland at first, however, it gets nicer with a little stretch through some Aspen and then again as you near the peak and get out of the manzanita and scrub Once you near the peak you get some nice views of Miller, sections of the Crest Trail and some pines and wildflowers start to appear in more abundance. The spur up to the peak is a little steep at first, but it calms down quickly enough and then takes you up to the peak along a pretty scenic little ridgeline. We spent a long time on the peak and then planned the rest of our day. I opted for a return without Miller via the Crest Trail and Hamburg, while everyone else but Kyle headed for Miller.

The Crest Trail offered perhaps some of the best views of the day and the hike down Hamburg was very nice. There was ample water along this section of the hike and overall the canyon was pretty scenic. The final two miles involved a few short climbs and the entering and exiting of a couple of drainages, but nothing too overwhelming. The trough at Comfort Springs was pumping out nice clear cold water, which the dogs appreciated and being in no rush we took an extended break there, shortly after we were connecting our loop back at the trailhead and camp.

Another great Tucson area hike. The ranges in and around Tuscon have yet to disappoint me and this one was no exception. I am usually not a fan of crowds and campgrounds, but this was a fun weekend with some cool like minded outdoor enthusiasts and I am excited to come back to this area for some backpacking when the warm temperatures break.

A Sky Island hike was way overdue, so it was hard to resist when I got invited to spend a day hiking the Huachucas!

When I first visited this range earlier this year (March), it was very brown and cold. The views were great then, but they are so much better during the summer when everything is green and the tops are covered with wild flowers.

I had very high expectations for wild flowers looking at some of the previous triplogs. This year doesn't seem to be as substantial as previous years, but it wasn't a deal breaker. Just before Bathtub Spring is where a substantial amount of flowers can be found right now. Everywhere else is mild to moderate. In my opinion, what makes this hike is the outstanding views you get in every direction due to the prominence/isolation of the Huachucas.

Between Bathtub Spring and Miller Peak, I picked my first ever wild raspberries after Chumley pointed them out to me. Across the connecting ridgeline we dealt with a little bit of rain and hail. No lightning though, so we were able to make it to the summit where the storm let up.

By this time the group had split up into separate smaller groups. After the summit me and Chumley headed along Crest Trail for Hamburg and Comfort Springs. Comfort Springs has a few places with deadfall, but both are otherwise in great condition. Lots of water in Wisconsin Canyon.

I enjoyed this loop a lot and foresee coming back again, next time maybe during the Fall season to see what the colors are like. Great to get acquainted and hike with some more HAZ folks too!

This was my first time in the Huachucas-- what an amazing area! We all hiked up to Carr together and then went our separate ways. Lee, Jackie, and I took the dogs on the loop while the rest did Miller Peak. Miller Peak will give me a reason to come back. All the trails on this loop are great!

There was to be some gathering of Tucson hikers in the majestic Huachuca Mountains, and I felt that some representation from the northerly neighbors was in order, so I invited myself along! :y:

We arrived Friday night in order to acclimate for the big day ahead! Saturday morning we split into multiple hiking groups so as to limit impact in the Miller Peak Wilderness, but we all headed up to Carr Peak to start the day. From there different groups went different directions.

Karl and Dallin and I took the crest trail over to Miller Peak. Along the way it started to rain and hail, but there was no thunder or lightning so we happily pressed on. Bknorby, justmike, MrBadBern, My Joseph, Floridasunshine, gloope, and a few non-hazzers followed and arrived just as we were starting our trip back to the north, and Karl decided to hike with them for a bit.

The rain let up so Dallin and I decided to continue on the Crest trail around to Hamburg. This was a new trail for me. It's steep but takes you quickly down in a nicely shaded canyon to where there's running water.

The climb up Comfort Springs trail is a grind at the end of a big day like this, and I made some kind of mistake reading the map and thought it was only a 200 foot climb. It's 3x more than that, so I was a bit irritated! We caught up to 9L and Clairebear before reaching Comfort Springs, and Karl wasn't far behind us. Once back at camp, we met up with the others who had returned via the Carr trail.

An evening of laughter, good food, and better company followed! Thanks to bknorby for planning and letting me crash your party! :app:

We took the standard route up Carr Peak from the Ramsey Vista Campground enjoying the good trail conditions. Towards the top there are nice stretches of wildflowers which is the norm after the abundant summer rains. Reaching the summit we spent about 30 mins on the summit enjoying the views and a beverage. We had split into two different groups from camp so as we were leaving the second group arrived to checkout Carr.

Heading down we continued over to the Crest Trail and stopped briefly at Bathtub Spring. Some of the group turned off at the Hamburg Loop but a few continued on the Crest Trail to Miller Peak. Unfortunately before we reached the Miller Peak turnoff the rain and hail started coming down pretty hard. We slogged to the top and took in the view but only for a moment as the rain continued but fortunately no lightning. Part way down the summit the second group arrived so I went back up with them to hike with them a bit. The rain kept up so we headed back down to the Crest Trail. Even in the rain the Crest Trail is a very nice stretch with Aspens, Spruce, and assorted wild flowers.

Eventually we made it back to the Hamburg Loop turnoff but I had no takers for the loop. The loop makes it's way around the south side of the Huachuca's with views into Mexico. It then reaches Bear Saddle before heading back to the north and the Hamburg Mine area. Nice foliage and water around Hamburg which is the upper part of Ramsey Canyon. To get back to our campground I split from Ramsey Canyon and headed over to Comfort Springs and back to Ramsey Vista Campground.

A group of us headed out to the Huachucas for a nice weekend of car camping and hiking. We started with Carr Peak. The trail makes a solid climb that takes some effort. It was a hot and sunny day with a chance of rain later in the day. The trail eventually levels off and you make the final push to the summit. Once up top our group took a break and enjoyed the views overlooking Sierra Vista. After we had our fill we headed for Miller Peak. Along the way rain & hail started falling. Claire didn’t have a rain coat so I stayed back with her. We decided to turn around and head back but opted for a loop hike returning down Wisconsin Canyon and the Comfort Spring Trail. At some point it stopped raining and the rest of the hike was very enjoyable. The Huachucas are fantastic! The trails are in good condition and the views are wonderful!

Preston the great introduced me to the Huachuca Mountains six years ago. I've enjoyed every hike in this range thus far. Today we followed Doc Fraley's recent loop from a month ago. The wildflowers here are among the most consistent large annual display I can think of over the years. The yellow blanket show is a simple daisy you would overlook if it wasn't for the astounding abundance. The Pinaleno's have more exotics in my experiences. Unfortunately they are hit and miss year to year. This display is jaw dropping with the nice crisp vertical wrinkles on the range.

As much as I enjoy the wildflowers, this hike is great regardless. A mile of raspberry and blackberry is borderline torture. A controllable... wise men wear pants. Someday I'll wise up. The uncontrollable for this "Southern California Style Coastal Experience" as jj calls it is the humidity. Yet aside from the first quarter mile outta the starting gate the elevation is nothing fierce.

My first time down Wisconsin Canyon & over on Comfort Springs 109. Wow, gotta check out Ramsey more! Love Miller Peak but still need to hit Pat Scott, Miller Canyon, Ida, Oversite, Bear, etc...

Last year in August Dr. Frick did this loop and it really got my attention. He said it was up my alley and had my name written all over it. Then over the weekend the Norby’s did a similar version and that was all I needed to spark my interest again.

I hit up a good reliable hiking partner and we set sail for Sierra Vista. I would have to say this is one of the most enjoyable hikes I have done all year. It was a treat from start to finish. The flowers were incredible and I was amazed by how many different ones there were. The weather had threats of rain but was near perfect the whole time. At one point as we made our way from Carr to Miller I told Joe it felt like Southern California.

As an added bonus there were raspberries along the way.

This one was over the top for me! Loved it and always enjoy hiking with Joe. Good times.

Wanted to get out and do some camping, so off to a favorite destination! Two nights and the usual monsoon style excitement. Just what I needed. :D Tuesday morning it was off to hike to the peak. Took my time and the weather held when it counted. Started to storm on my way down, but almost no lightning, so it was basically a nice non-scary walk in the rain. :) Still too early for the prime flower show (usually that is from about August 10 to September 10 for those interested). Hurricane didn't do much down this way (Tucson either) and the monsoon is a little deficient up to this point (in spite of early action), but that likely will change.

Never get tired of visiting this old friend.

Note: Somehow the timestamps on my photos are one hour early...perhaps when I changed settings and activated the gps for the hike. I fixed this later in the day. The times on the gps track are correct.

for quite a while i've wanted to hit both Carr and Miller Peaks. Not sure why i waited so long. isn't it great when a hike is even more awesome than you hoped it would be.

if timed right (monsoon season flowers) this hike can knock your socks off with mountain flowers. today wasn't the most i've seen up there but it certainly was the most i've seen in quite a while anywhere. very green. nice creeks flowing, especially in Hamburg.

saw 6 deer (including the smallest baby i have ever seen :) ), 3 hawks and 2 people.

the weather was out of this world. early on i was worried about storms but i beat them. getting ugly up high as i was driving down. it was actually cold on Carr peak at 8am...little breeze and i was soaked with sweat. that was awesome

if you've got the time and the gumption, this is a WONDERFUL summer peak bagging loop
