It was my turn to pick so I found a unique hike we haven't hiked often with an easy 4,288 aeg, breezy enchanting 67.4 -79.82 degrees. We settled on a flat death march in near-freezing conditions with one good ascent.

Highline Trail #31
I enjoy the segment we hiked today in peak Autumn foliage. It is loaded with pines and a good mix of nice oaks. It's crystal clear the AZT does not maintain this portion. Large portions of the tread are in good to very good condition. A few turns are not clear or misleading. Some of the grades flaunt Y Bar tread.

Myrtle Trail #30
This is a wildly nice trail with the best views.

General Crook Trail #130 - Coconino NF
When in Rome. Somebody slipped one past the goalie, it's getting trail maintenance.

Babe Haught Trail - Hatchery to Knoll Lake
The top half challenges my wuss balance, otherwise nice views. I dry heaved after the flat treatment, downed a bunch of cold water, and felt fine. I'll never hear the end of it... lol

A beautiful morning/day for a hike. Temps in the low 40's to start, 60's for highs with a nice breeze all day that helped drone out the whining.

Highline Trail #31
Heading CW from the still closed Hatchery, it was 7.5-ish miles of roller-coastering views to the rim. You pass over numerous smooth red-rock areas, through conifers and lush riparian areas as you approach the Pyle ranch area. We missed a turn to stay on the Highline at one point and followed a use trail next to Ellison Creek. Discovering our error, we went cross country to rejoin.

Myrtle Trail #30
Reaching this intersection, we noticed 3 people and machinery, performing trail maintenance just to the west on the Highline Trail. Hopefully they'll get to the east of Myrtle also.

There is still no sign at the intersection with the Highline.
[ photo ] , but the area is recovering from the Highline fire prior to our 2018 hike. [ photo ]
The climb up the Myrtle trail gives you a chance to catch some great views and your breath.
It's a 1 mile, 1100' climb to the top, for the most part a good trail and a steady grade.

General Crook Trail #140 - Apache SitgreavesNF
We used the Crook to make our way over to Myrtle Point. There has been some very recent maintenance to the trail. Someone has flagged and has been doing a great job to bring it back. I'm curious as to who or what organization as well as what sections they are doing.
We stopped at Myrtle Lake for some lunch and were able to take in the views without the Memorial Day boat and water-skiing traffic. We also found Lost Lake.

Myrtle Point 7920
First time out to this point. We took FR300C in and an old overgrown, decommissioned logging road back out to Trail 300. A short break with good views.

Babe Haught Trail - Hatchery to Knoll Lake
We did some cross country to cut off some mileage to the Babe. The Babe is still its typically steep rocky drop back down to the TH.

Good times with the crew, squad, flock or whatever they're calling it now.

Tracie the Intrepid and I had been to Myrtle Point once before, about 2.5 years ago, and we were looking for a hike to do up on the Rim, so we decided to go there again. I had never been on the Myrtle Trail before, and had never been on the section of the Highline Trail between the Fish Hatchery and the Myrtle Trail, so I decided to make a loop hike out of it; actually I got the idea from a hike that @hikerdw did earlier this year.

We started west on the Highline Trail, and we were on the trail for about 8.5 miles until we got to the Myrtle Trail. The first few miles of the Highline Trail were really nice -- we were hiking on smooth red rocks, and it reminded me of being in Sedona. After a few miles the trail was a bit less interesting, and there was a bit of uphill to get to the Myrtle Trail.

The Myrtle Trail was a nice trail to take up to the Rim. It was a bit steep, but there were a few switchbacks and for the most part the trail followed the contour of the mountain getting up to the top.

Once on the Rim, we took the Rim Road and the General Crook Trail to FR 300C, the turnoff to Myrtle Point. It was an easy walk to Myrtle Point from there. The views are nice at the highpoint, although I like being up on Promontory Butte better.

Once back at the Rim Road-FR 300C junction, we took the Rim Road for aways, and then bushwhacked for a bit, and followed some other forest roads and logging roads to the Babe Haught Trail, which took us back to the starting point.

This hike was longer than what I expected it to be. The temperature was warmer than normal and there were no clouds in the sky and very few trees, so there was lots of sun exposure. If I ever did the hike again, I'd pick a cooler day!

I enjoyed the hike, but if you only want to bag Myrtle Point, there are shorter and easier ways to get there.

We saw a couple of trees with some fall color, but that was about it; however, there were very few hardwoods, so there are better places to go for seeing fall foliage.

Expecting masses we decided to give this loop a try and it hit on all cylinders. Weather was perfect, saw no others the entire hike, and saw some wildlife, elk and deer, along the way.

We started from the Hatchery Trail Head and hiked in a CW direction. The section of the Highline trail we hiked to Myrtle Trail was really nice. I had low expectations reading some of the posted triplogs but those were greatly exceeded. Myrtle Trail was a great accent to the rim. Easy to follow and killer views. Picked up the General Trail for the walk across the rim which was easy to follow and very pleasant. Used some old forest roads to connect The General to Babe Haught Trail to close out the loop. Will definitely do this loop again.

Myrtle Trail... Barely used by anyone anymore, outside of the one day of the year the Mogollon Monster 100 miler takes place. Runners hit this gem 53 miles in (and for most people, in the dark). After an evening camping out, providing aid for the runners at the end of FR144, I decided to finally see what Myrtle is about.

I woke up in the morning feeling a bit off (I wasn't just going to sit there and *watch* my friend drink all of my whiskey). So the hope was to keep it slow and easy, and only jog the easy parts (spoiler: there was not a lot of jogging).

Little background on Highline Trail, if you're not from around here... It's a bit notorious for being very rocky, washed out, with steep ups and downs over ridges, and overgrown in places. However, they've been rerouting it over the years, most recently between Washington Park and FR144. The area roughly between FR144 and Tonto Creek seems to be the only part of the trail left with the original Highline "character".

Hell's Gate Canyon in particular was the most "fun" stretch getting to Myrtle, as there are little side paths leading seemingly everywhere. There was also a trickle in the canyon.

It's really easy to miss the Myrtle junction now, since the sign apparently burned down. Look for a cairn less than a half mile east of FR31 (which is not signed...so I'm sure this advice is real helpful).

A couple weeks ago, the race organizers put together a Myrtle Trail work day, which was made very obvious by the fact that we did not get off the trail even once. It's still waist-deep grass in places. I'm sure it'll be back to its old, barely-existing state within a few weeks. The view at the top is one of the best in Rim Country.

Coming back down Myrtle was almost as difficult as going up.

Would I recommend this as a hike? Eh. Only easy access is from the top at Rim Road, but then you get the best view before you even start. FR144 is close enough, but you need a HCV to get there. Myrtle's mostly useful as part of a loop.

Highline Trail #31
I needed this section of the Highline Trail, between Washington Park and the Myrtle Trail, to Gir-er-Done.
I was not expecting good trail conditions based on my last time out by the Myrtle Trail. I was pleasantly surprised by the excellent conditions all the way to FR144. Numerous sections have been redone/rerouted since the Highline fire of 2017. Great water was flowing along the way at the East Verde, Dude Creek, Bonita Creek and Hells Gate Canyon. Views along the way with aren't bad either. Evidence of the fire was there, but did not take away from the Trail.

Myrtle Trail #30
This trail at the intersection with the Highline Trail, took some fire damage. The old sign at the intersection is no longer around. [ photo ] It is a steady steep climb, giving you good reasons to stop, take a breath and take in the views.

Trail 300
With this trail being reopened, we expected to see plenty of activity. Not a single soUl was seen. The trail was wide, smooth and free of catclaw. Some of the best views in the state.

Col Devin Trail #30
Karl and I evidently did not know what the L was going on here. We met a solitary through hiker climbing as we were going down. He said he started 5 weeks ago. I LOVE the re-route.

Bruce put together a nice loop. Highline was awesome out of Washington Park after all the post fire maintenance and re-routes. The re-routes do add mileage but deduct AEG so it all works out. The trail maintenance stops east of Hells Gate Canyon and resumes old track conditions to the Myrtle trail junction. From the junction we ascended to the rim through significant burn area but the trail is still intact with some nicely cut switchbacks and traverses leading the way.

Once on the rim we followed the 300 back to Col Devin junction. Nice rim walk through the pines with a cool breeze. At Col Devin we dropped down the AZT and got to see the new section with all the bridges. Very nice trail and walk back to Washington Park!

I threw together a loop that hit a couple of my To-dos.
- Hike from the Hatchery TH.
- Hit a section of the Highline I hadn't been on before.
- Hit the Myrtle Trail to the top of the rim.
- Explore a bit of the off trail stuff on the way to Knoll Lake
- Go down the Rim on the Babe Haught trail

Not completed - Hiking the circumference of Knoll Lake. We ran out of time and mainly energy.

Highline Trail #31 - Almost all the sections of the Highline I'd been on to this point, had been in decent to great shape.
I don't need to do this section again.. Rocky and poorly marked in spots, we actually lost the trail 2 or 3 times.

Myrtle Trail #30 - A bit overgrown with grass (No big deal) this trail is mainly a steady ramp to the top. It gains 1100' in a mile. It provides some expansively wide views of the rim country.

Next we went cross country to Knoll Lake, crossing three 100' plus canyons on the way. Middle Leonard Canyon the tallest at a steep 200'.

We only had the time and ambition to skirt the southern portion of Knoll Lake. We had out lunch from a perch above the lake. I need to come back to do the circumference.

Babe Haught #143 - We scrambled off a southern ridge of Knoll lake, to hit this trail. It's a gentle climb with one steeper section, to the rim. The Babe going down the rim to the Hatchery, was steep and rocky in places, but once again some great views!

Clouds and breezes made the hiking mainly perfect.

From the Hatchery Trail on FR289 we toured west on Highline Trail #31. It starts off Sedonesque. Remember to bring your route finding awareness for a few hiccups along the way. After 2 miles the joyous Sedona motif gives way and the tread turns to old school Y-Bar in the Mazzies... ankle buster blah. I'm now even more impressed with Boone's 2011 10 hour Zane Grey 50 Mile Endurance Race.

Myrtle Trail #30 is statistically similar to the best damn mountain on planet earth, Squaw Peak. We lost the trail once but found it quick. This was through a large stretch of waist high grass. Reminded me of the turf at Bay Meadows around '91. I liked this trail and would guess most are not so fond.

Up on the rim we figured the grunt work was done and moseyed off trail through the pines. Bruce plotted out a whiplash roller coaster ride across the ravines. Grossly over exaggerated but we did revise the gameplan upon realization time was slipping away.

Knoll is a gem, almost as nice as the fond memories I have of Bear Lake. We enjoyed a late 3pm lunch then worked over to Babe Haught #143 based on Dave's butter knife sharp knowledge. Weather was fairly nice all day. It crossed over to fabulous after lunch. Descending #143 felt steep but seems to be a better maintained trail than Myrtle Trail #30 or Horton Springs Trail #292 ( not to be confused with the popular CREEK trail #285 ).

I did a loop hike with the Highline / Myrtle / Gen. Crook / Babe Haught trails.
I started out at the Fish Hatchery TH and headed East on the Highline. I went north on the Myrtle trail.

It's been about a year since I've done the Myrtle trail and I remember why. The trail is all sun exposed and there are some route finding issues on it. The climb to the false summit went without issue. The high humidly and heat slowed me down some. There are three routes now! 1) The original cairns 2) old rusty orange flags in the ground and 3) newer blue ribbons. They split at times and then re-converge later on. I followed the old trusty cairns and somehow got messed up on the false summit. I was on the wrong side of a rock pile and had to backtrack and do some very mild rock climbing to get back on-track.

I did some exploring on rim. The only thing that almost panned out was locating the Holder Cabin. My older topo map and GPS showed a Holder Cabin in the vicinity of the Upper Buckskin spring. I got within 1,000 of it and luck would have it, a forest ranger came by. I asked him about the cabin. The ranger knew of it, but it was torn down years ago. There was forest thinning going on where the cabin used to be, so I didn't stick around.

When I was ready to come down the rim, it started to sprinkle on me. As I got a half mile from the Babe Haught trail and the heaven's open up and it poured. Then the hail, lighting and thunder started! Some of the strikes were close :scared: . I didn't want to go down the Babe Haught with the lightning strikes (not to mention a slick trail). There's a section of the trail that goes straight out with drop-offs on either side and you’re the tallest thing. I would have made the perfect lightning rod :o . So I hung out on the rim as long as I could. I waited until the rain started to ease up and headed on the Babe Haught. The trail was a stream. When I got to the drainage's, the water was a foot to foot and a 1/2 deep. By the time I came to the edge of the forest the rain stopped and wind was bitter cold. On one of the switchbacks down there was a cool 200 foot waterfall. It was about a 1/4 mile from the trail and too dark for any pictures. The lightning was striking to the south. It was pitch-dark when I got to the TH.

The lightning keep the sky lite-up as I pulled both of the rain covers from the Jeep.

I'll remember this hike for a while!

Our original intention was to do Hellsgate but we were greeted with closure signs. We thought everything was back open but I guess because they still haven't killed enough bears, everything around Ponderosa below 260 is closed. A lot of the re-opened stuff above 260 is only open 6am-6pm so if you're expecting to go up there camping or backpacking, you better call the ranger station first.

We quickly came up with a second option and headed to the fish hatchery. Neither one of us had done this section of the Highline so we decided to take it out to the Myrtle Trail and up the rim. Then we would walk 300 over to Babe Haught and back down to the hatchery.

The Highline is up and down-- over and over again but with nice views. This section had lots of cows. We came across a lightning strike from the night before that was still smoking and cracking so we called it in. The Myrtle is extremely steep, hard to follow in parts, and completely disappears in parts. We finally made it up to the rim and found a good lunch spot.

On the way to the Babe Haught trail, it finally started raining on us. We knew it was going to happen so it was no big deal. Just as we reached Babe Haught, we ran into Chumley and AZpride. Nice to see those gentlemen again. Chumley must think I spend all my weekends walking up and down FR300 ;)

We got back to the hatchery and it was done. A salvaged day and the trails were empty!
