A little more recon for a possible shuttle hike. This route may be a bit steep for the final push but never say never. There were several people out hiking on a Tuesday. No parking at the Meridian lot but the street parking it better anyway. The clouds were light and the sun was shining. Nice day for a double.

tcrowder
tcrowder and I went back to the Goldfields for a short afternoon hike. My dog joined us this time.

The Meridian lot had 8-10 cars with some leaving as we arrived. The temperature was perfect as we started and we made good time to the saddle. We caught our breath for a few and then pushed to the peak. This stretch of trail obviously gets less use than below the saddle but even the dog had no trouble (okay, very little trouble) following it. Unobtrusive cairns marked a couple of turns as we ascended through a layer of tuff.

The views from this modest peak were a stunning surprise! The clear air and some western clouds during the last hour of daylight somehow made it easy to pick out just about anything we wanted. The San Tans looked only a stone's throw away. Four Peaks presided over the entire Mazatzal range to the north and northeast. Mound Mountain was away to the east. Weavers Needle and Picketpost bracketed the Superstitions front range in profile. The summit of Picacho Peak peeked over a shoulder of the Picacho Mountains (Newman Peak). Pass Mountain dominated our view to the west, but we could see bits of South Mountain, the Sierra Estrella, and the Maricopa Mountains beyond. The biggest surprise was Mount Lemmon. I thought that couldn't be it but there it was plain as day, 85 miles away. I later verified all of this using heywhatsthat.

We found our way back to the saddle as a chill set in and caught the sunset as we approached the trailhead.

Evening stroll on the loop with Pass Mtn trail saddle. Lots of shade and finished in the dark. The was did come up but was in my eyes so not much help. Probably should check the batteries in my headlamp before the hike? Saw a group of young hikers on Peak 3125 saddle. The air even felt cool after the sun went down

A quick hike up to the Peak 3125 saddle and looped around to Pass Mountain saddle. No critters out but I saw 4 other hikers. I was hiking in the sun until the 1st saddle then shade the rest of the way. It turned out to be much cooler than I thought for an evening hike.

I hadn't hiked in this part of the Goldfields in a few years, and I was looking for something relatively short today because my friend had to be home by mid-afternoon, and the Ironwood Ridgeline looked like a good option to see some new peaks. The Medicine Wheel parking lot was mostly full when we arrived just after sunrise, though some of the cars looked like they were from locals camped out/sleeping in their cars, which I've also noticed at other Goldfield trailheads...

We took a quick right on Meridian Mystery Trail and saw two deer along that stretch before we started following the social trail up to the ridgeline. It was a comfortable morning, and we shed the extra layers early before we started the ascent, which was marked with the traditional, unnecessary Goldfield white spray paint arrows and dots. We took the easy detour over to the first peak, 3108, and had a nice view of the series of peaks along the ridgeline.

"Temptation Peak" (the southern of the two Peak 3195s) looked like quite a scramble from a distance but was pretty straightforward once we got there. There was a summit register on top with a couple of familiar HAZ names and a total of eight previous sign-ins this year, the most recent of which was yesterday. We scrambled down off the east side of the peak and continued toward Peak 3125, picking up a faint trail that led over toward the left side of the summit, where we scrambled up a chute to the top and got a better look at Hippy Hill (Peak 3163) and the northern Peak 3195.

Hippy Hill was a little more challenging than the three previous peaks but was a fun one. We stayed to the east and scrambled up that side...ishamod found a more efficient route than the chute full of spider webs and cacti that I originally started up before following his lead :). We took a break on top and noticed two other hikers back on Peak 3125, the only two people we saw on the ridgeline today.

[ youtube video ]

We scrambled down a steep section on the northeast side of the peak, but there was a lot of solid rock, then headed over to 3195. Having read about the conditions of that climb, we didn't plan to go up there but wanted a closer look. The only realistic spot to climb up that we saw was a lower spot with a chute of yellow rock, which was every bit as crumbly as advertised...the first foothold that ishamod tested at the base of the chute immediately broke off, confirming we weren't going to try going up.

We circled around to the north side of 3195 and explored two fairly large caves, then bushwhacked to the southwest to get back on the Ironwood Ridgeline route. We saw a small arch along the way and followed the trail down to Bulldog Saddle. I'd hoped to get up to Peak 3004 as well, but ishamod was short on time today, so we just circled back to the trailhead from there.

Today was one of the hottest days of the year but was still comfortable, especially with a little cloud cover, but it was a reminder that summer is coming soon, and it's good to get some of these lower-elevation hikes in before the extreme heat kicks in. Today's was a short but fun one with a lot of off-trail scrambling. I hadn't hiked with ishamod in more than three months, so it was great to see him again and catch up and explore some new peaks in the Goldfields.

Back to this fun little hike. I had some free time after working a little in the morning.

Lots of vehicles in the lot when I arrived, and I started out amongst a “pack” of hikers going up the same 3004 Loop Trail. I managed to pass them and made my way to the Bulldog Saddle.

The path heading from the saddle seems to be more worn than the last time. The trail was easy to follow until you hit the tuff area below the peak. But, it was easy enough to figure out which way to go up. I did forget how steep this one is. You gain a bunch of elevation from the saddle.

The views up top were amazing as always. You get the Superstitions, Four Peaks, Pass Mountain, Red Mountain, EJ Peak/Lone Mountain, but the draw is the line of Goldfield Mountains/ridges that really makes this one nice. The view the nearby peaks and then Dome Mountain and the rest all the way down to Top Hat. Very nice.

The crazy clouds and hazy conditions made for difficult photos, but the point of hiking up is seeing it.

After a while up top, I started down. I was not in the mood for the rough ridgeline across the connected peaks, but that’s a good one as well. Looking down, I could see a couple groups at the saddle doing the loop. I did not see anyone else until I was near the trailhead and a couple more groups were heading out. Snowbirds and Holiday visitors a-plenty today for sure.

I will have to come up for another sunrise sometime.

It had been almost 2 years since I had been on the Ironwood Ridgeline, so I decided that Super Bowl Sunday morning would be a good time to go once again.

Starting from the Meridian TH, we went a short distance on the Bulldog Saddle Trail, and then went east on the Meridian Mystery Trail. After going a ways we went on what is now a decent social trail up to a saddle below the Ironwood Ridgeline. For whatever reason there were a few painted arrows on the social trail, providing a reminder of how close to Phoenix we were.

Once on the ridgeline, we went to the summits of Peak 3108, Temptation Peak, and Peak 3125. Peak 3108 is an easy walkup, but there was a bit of climbing on the other 2 peaks. We descended Peak 3125 to the north and then climbed up to Peak 3163, which is a fun climb.

Then we went off-trail to the west side of Peak 3125, and followed a social trail down to Bulldog Saddle. Instead of going directly back to the TH, we followed the Peak 3004 Loop to the north of Peak 3004 and then up to Pass Mountain Saddle. From there we went back to the TH.

We didn't see anyone on the hike until we got down to Bulldog Saddle. From Pass Mountain Saddle back to the TH we encountered a number of people, which is to be expected on a weekend. A couple of them had boom boxes, but at least there were no painted arrows.

Decided to try a short hike I could finish before things heated up by midday. Left from Meridian trailhead and headed up to Bulldog Saddle, passed one other hiker going the same way. On arriving to the saddle decided to head up to peak 3125, on the way up kept thinking this is not gonna be fun going down , it wasn’t. Steep, loose rocks and plenty of cholla , one section of about 15 to 20 feet had cholla carpeting requiring careful foot placement, pleased to only collect two jumpers along here. Of course a bee had to start buzzing around my head and ears thankfully didn’t bring any friends. Must have finally decided the stinky red flower was no good. I had forgotten I was wearing a red bandanna :D .Good views from 3125 but not sure I’ll do a repeat.Back at the saddle continued on the the loop over to connect to Pass Mountain Trail. Passed by and chatted with a nice couple from Green Bay visiting since a week ago. Uneventful trip back to the lot after a snack break at the saddle. It was warming up by time I returned .

I needed a quick hike with a little challenge. I thought about EJ/Lone Mountain, but I have done that many times. So, I remembered going up 3125 when I did the Ironwood Ridgeline a few years back. I wanted to catch a sunrise, so I left my house in Mesa at 430am, arrived about 5am and started up in the dark.

The hike up to the Bulldog Saddle along the 3004 Loop Trail went ok and then when I started up the hill for Peak 3125, I remembered quickly, this one was steep...ha ha. Oh well, some nice elevation packed into a short hike.

The skies looked semi-promising, but I could see the brown smoke clouds hanging over the horizon. The colors were nice in spite of that. I got to see a nice sunrise afterall.

I contemplated exploring more along the ridge to the north, but I needed to get back home by 10am. So, I just stayed atop 3125 for a while, took some picture and then started down.

Going up was a drag because of the steepness, going down was a drag because of the loose rocks. But, I managed just fine. I could already hear and see the masses along Pass Mountain and 3004 Loop. Lots of folks out this morning.

We I got back to the trailhead it was totally full with cars 10 deep on both sides of Meridian as well. The weather is turning, so time to start finding even more obscure hikes.

A nice morning, with a good work out and a wonderful sunrise. I'll take it.

Nice and cool cloud covered day , enjoyed the solitude on this loop not easy to find now with school being out. Took a look up 3125 , not a fan of the scree on the descent. No bikes until on pass mountain trail on the way back, did see a group of 3 hikers pass the Bulldog saddle as I was slowly descending 3125. Need to figure out a way to combo this with a bigger loop.

Hippy's a fun one! :) Managed an 0600 start and about 3 hours of shaded hiking. The last couple of miles got warm and it was 86 at the trailhead at the end. Made a quick attempt at 3195. Every hold came loose so I decided climbing it would be stupid.

Traversed north of 3195 then north on the ridge before dropping down and heading back in the drainage toward the 3004 loop for some easy trail miles back to the car.

Still a little warm for my preference, but I'm sick of driving places.

Let's see: It's late May(on Memorial Day no less) and the high temperature is in the mid-70's; so what else would I do but go hiking in the Goldfields!

I had been wanting to go out to the Meridian Trailhead and post a couple of guides on this site for the Meridian Mystery Trail and the Bulldog Saddle Trail, and today was the perfect day for it.

I recorded 2 separate tracks on my GPS:
1) I went on the Meridian Mystery Trail from where it branches off from the Bulldog Saddle Trail until it peters out a couple of miles later. This trail is well-groomed and easy to follow for almost 2 miles. Then the trail gets more faint and difficult to follow until it essentially ends. Once the trail essentially ended, I continued east on a very easy bushwhack up to a ridge that was probably not much more than 0.25 miles from the Idaho Pass Trail. I then turned around and went back the way that I came. Along the way, I noticed a cave off to the north, so naturally I had to climb up to the cave. It turned out not to be much of a cave -- it went back maybe 10-12 feet -- and some moron had taken some blue spray paint and tainted the cave with graffiti. I doubt if I will make the trip to the cave again. I have used the Meridian Mystery Trail a few times as part of the Peak 3108 Loop Hike, but this was the first time that I have been to the end of the trail. I made my way back to the trailhead. My GPS recorded 5.1 miles with an AEG of 1,026' on this portion of the hike.
2) I did the Peak 3004 Loop Hike, but added sidetrips to Peak 3125 and Hill 2290. I had been up to Peak 3125 from Bulldog Saddle a couple of times, but route finding was easier this time -- someone has made an easy to follow use trail almost all the way to the top. This was the first time that I had been to Hill 2290. The views on Hill 2290 were much nicer than I expected, given its modest elevation and the fact that it is in a valley. There were nice 360 degree views -- particularly Bulldog Ridge, Dome Mountain, Panorama Peak, and Lone Mountain to the NW. While atop Hill 2290 I saw 6-7 javelinas in the valley down below. My GPS recorded 6.0 miles and an AEG of 1,791' on this portion of the hike.

To get the mileage and elevation gain for the hike I just added the 2 segments together.

It was a great day to be out in the beautiful and underrated Goldfields!

This was a fun hike in the underrated Goldfield Mountains that started and ended at the Meridian TH, at the north end of Meridian Road in Mesa/Apache Junction.

The hike consisted of 3 parts: The Peak 3108 Ridgeline; the South Bulldog Ridgeline; and the Peak 3004 Ridgeline. Most of the hike was totally off-trail and it included a bit of bushwhacking.

From the TH, I went north a short distance on the Bulldog Saddle Trail; but instead of going to Bulldog Saddle, I took a right and went east for almost 1.5 miles on the unsigned Meridian Mystery Trail. Then I went off-trail on a well-cairned use trail, heading north up toward the Peak 3108 Ridgeline. I made my way to a saddle on the Ridgeline, and then went NW along the top of the ridgeline. I enjoy hiking on this ridgeline -- the views are super, and are much better than the views on the Pass Mountain Ridgeline imho. I made to the summit of Peak 3108, and then went up to Temptation Peak (3,195'). It was an easy ascent on the south side of Temptation Peak, but the northside had some verticality to it so I descended on the east side and looped around to the north side, and then made my way up to Peak 3125 (fwiw, T. Tenny refers to this peak as Peak 3113). To get up Peak 3125 I did a little class 3 climbing up a chute, but it wasn't a bad climb.

After enjoying the views atop Peak 3125, I dropped down to the north and went to Peak 3163, aka Hippy Hill, on South Bulldog Ridge. My intention was to climb up the 3 peaks on the Ridge: Peak 3163, North Peak 3195 ( [ Peak 3195 Goldfield Mountains ] ), and Peak 3075.

Peak 3163 looked a bit daunting, but once there it was a short, easy class 3 climb to the top. I had set my hiking poles down before climbing up, so I had to descend the same way that I went up; otherwise I would have descended to the north going toward Peak 3195. After circling the east side of Hippy Hill, I made my way over to Peak 3195. There was only one obvious way to climb up Peak 3195, but I was out there by myself and the first part of the climb was a tad sketchy. Thus, with discretion being the better part of valor, I decided to wimp out and come back another day to climb up to Peak 3195. I wasn't too worried about the climb up, but I didn't really want to have to deal with finding footholds on the descent when I was there by myself.

I started to go over to Peak 3075, but time was getting away from me, so I decided to make my way over to the Peak 3004 Ridgeline and hike up to Peak 3004. This is the ridgeline that runs between Bulldog Saddle and Pass Mountain Saddle. From the base of Peak 3195, I could see a fairly easy route up to Peak 3004, so I did an off-trail bushwhack through a couple of canyons and made my way to the trail that loops around Peak 3004, and then did the off-trail climb up to Peak 3004. This was not a difficult way to get up there, although there was a bit of class 3 climbing near the summit. On the descent, I headed west over to Pass Mountain Saddle. There was a bit more up-and-down getting to Pass Mountain Saddle than I had envisioned; in retrospect, it would have been easier to go back the way that I came and go to Bulldog Saddle.

From the Pass Mountain saddle I just took that Pass Mountain Loop Trail back to the trailhead.

This was another great day of hiking in the Goldfield's. I will come back out another day and hopefully do the other 2 ascents on South Bulldog Ridge.

Although I've hiked this loop and the 3125 summit multiple times I guess I never linked them to my posted triplogs so instead of just going back and adding them I decided to just hike them both again. Trail head to saddle is a nice warmup, I passed a couple small groups of hikers. The hike to the 3125 summit is a fun one for sure, actually a pretty easy climb. Several routes here and there but if you focus on "up" and aim towards the left of the golden rock area you will be fine. Cruised back down to the saddle and continued the 3004 loop. Caught up to a pair of hikers that I passed earlier and they asked if they could follow me since they were unfamiliar with the area. Sure, let's go. Hiked with them until I could give them a bearing on where they would join the Pass Mountain trail and then broke away to resume my normal hiking stride. The hike from the Pass Mountain saddle to the trail head was done in cruise mode, since that isn't my favorite. Was disappointed seeing all the recent litter. I guess some folks have a problem carrying their used tissue :(

Other than the litter this was a nice weekday hike.

Just a random hike after a night at work. Was to hot for me the last hour...
I was going to head up this trail and come back one of the washes. Then out of the blue I run into Wally hiking with one of his neighbors :o . What are the chances  ?! Good to see you. It's been way to long :) . He mentioned there was a summit up there so I blame him :D . I went up to the saddle then headed east on the ridge. Safety first and I was slow going. I wanted to drop off the ridge after the summits but it was to steep for me. I stayed on the ridge until I finally found a use trail down. At the saddle it seemed to go the wrong way so I bushwacked (way to long) back to a Meridian wash. Shorts=ouch. Now that I look at the route, I should have went that way ](*,) . As I was dropping into the wash I saw a roadrunner and starting singing the roadrunner song. Off key,I guess  , as 3 Javelinas didn't appreciate it and ran up the wash. Finally climbed out and hit the trail I started on and back to the car in no time.

This one turned out to be much more difficult than I originally planned. The down climb from the last peak, to the final saddle, was more challenging for me than down climb on Weaver's a few years back. I'll have to pay attention more to the route if I ever attempt this one again.

I did this hike as a combination of the Ridgeline 3108 Loop Hike and the Peak 3004 Loop Hike. We started from the Meridian Trailhead, went east for a around 1.5 miles on an easy-to-follow trail, and then began the ascent up to the Peak 3108 Ridgeline. On the easy-to-follow trail, we saw 6 deer, including a nice size buck who stood and stared at us for at least 10 minutes. As we began the ascent to the ridgeline, there were a number of cairns that guided the way for a while. Past that point, I used the gps track that I downloaded from HAZ. It was a lot of fun hiking the ridgeline, and it involved a good bit of rock climbing. The views are awesome on the ridgeline, particularly at the top of Peak 3108, Temptation Peak, and Peak 3125(Note that Tenny's book calls this one Peak 3113). We climbed up Temptation Peak on the south side, and it looked a bit iffy to descend down the north side, so we descended on the east side.

When we descended down Peak 3125 down to Bulldog Saddle, instead of going south back to the trailhead, we picked up the Peak 3004 Loop hike by going north down to the valley below Peak 3004, looped around up to Pass Mountain Saddle, and then took the Pass Mountain trail to the south back to the trailhead.

The Peak 3108 Ridgeline hike was cool and was a lot of fun. There was nothing special about the Peak 3004 Loop hike, but it did enable us to get in a couple of extra miles.

I wonder why this is called the Peak 3108 Ridgeline? Peak 3108 is actually a bit off of the Ridgeline, and both Peak 3125 and Temptation Peak (3,195') are higher.
