Another Pipeline Fire survey: Apologies for the lengthy triplog and photoset.

It was a predicted down day for monsoon activity but still hot enough that the highest elevations were desirable. With my tolerance of people making Humphreys literally unhikeable at this time of year, I opted for Fremont. Only thee Hazzers before have posted trips that include the SE ridge route, and I hadn't previously checked out this access either, so I figured today would be a good day for it.

It's been 2 years since the Pipeline Fire, and the FS continues with an official closure of Shultz Pass Road and the Weatherford Trail itself. (Along with the closure of the Inner Basin Road, this severely restricts much of the use of south and east sides of the mountain.)

I stopped by the Wheel of Fortune set and bought a shopping cart full of the vowels I and E before heading off to the end of Freidlein Prairie road. It once accessed 14 amazing campsites, but is now in a year-round camping prohibited area for which the only purpose is to access the wilderness. There were no other vehicles there.

The aspen regrowth along the spur was impressive. The average height was over 4 feet, and a good number of sprouts reached 7 and 8 feet tall. In just TWO years!! This would become a theme on the day in the fire-damaged areas. Upon reaching 102, there was an orange striped A-frame with no further information. I followed the trail through the unburned lower slopes for half a mile before deviating to be in compliance with the forest ordered trail closure.

The trail was lost to a cavernous washout in the drainage at the 9040 contour. I found it remarkably challenging to find a route both into and out of this deeply-carved flood channel. It will require quite a bit of trail work to build a route through this one once the upper slopes have stabilized and limited future flooding. It's a good example of why this trail is closed.

I traversed the adjacent slope steeply and finally gained the Fremont SE ridge at the 9200 contour. This lower ridge is mostly grassland sparsely dotted with both burned and unburned trees. Crossing 102 again at the 9700 contour is where the real burn area began. At this point, travel wasn't terrible -- most of the dead trees are still standing -- but the growth of aspen was so thick that it was reminiscent of manzanita bushes in the Mazzies (only remarkably soft and pleasant, comparatively!)

Three more trail crossings, and the final 102 encounter in the switchback on the ridge at 10,400 brought much of the same. If there were aspen before, there is prolific aspen regrowth now. Where white pine dominated, the forest floor was lined only with new grass and ferns. I did not see a single new pine sprout all day.

I continued up through the burn, encountering the beautiful grassy glade that provides the most direct route to the summit, and covering about 1000 vertical feet. I put effort into making wide switchbacks across the slope to lessen the grade, but I'd be lying if I didn't admit it was a grueling and exhausting endeavor.

Along the way however, the fire scar is left behind, and healthy old pines surround you. It is nice that a portion of this slope, and all of it to the west, was spared. The upper reaches of the ridge enter a more volcanic, bouldery, cinder slope, but there was no problem zig zagging a route through to the summit.

It was a delightful day with a light breeze and beautiful clouds making for dramatic skies. One of the few lady beetles decided to bite my leg, but the swarm of black flies provided only minor nuisance as they tended to themselves on the windbreak rock structure.

I began the return retracing my steps through the glade and down to the 102 at the 10,100 contour before again poaching a short stretch of badly eroded old road. At the 10,000ft switchback I again went off-trail, paralleling another badly carved flood channel through a dense forest of chest-deep new aspen growth. It was rare to have an opening enough to see my feet and where they were landing.

I clipped the trail again in the switchback at 9550, where an absolute disaster of flooding has destroyed any sign of the old roadbed once built here. At this point the flood damage was so pronounced I actually found it easier to walk in the bottom of the drainage, often scoured to a flat-ish sandy bottom.

This canyon bottom had been a fall favorite in the past and I was curious to see how it had fared. The flood damage is extreme, but the lower canyon itself has large swaths of forest that are either unburned, or only lightly damaged by fire. The flood scars will take many years to recover though.

I gave up my exploration in the Aspen Spring area. Flooding has obliterated what might have once existed here, and I set out up the slope to reconnect with Kachina and the spur back to my truck.

There were numerous signs of elk all day -- all those aspen sprouts should provide ample forage for years to come, but I only spotted a couple of small herds of deer in the lower grasslands.

The Fremont ridge route will likely become more difficult (perhaps impossible) in the years to come as the burned trees fall and create a maze of deadfall. There is the treeless glade that exists below the ridge on the west side which should offer a clear path ... but the tiring side slope will add to the effort.

The Weatherford trail is passable now, and it does see some use. I doubt the FS is out there writing tickets for it, rather just posting it as closed so users recognize it as nearly obliterated. It is definitely not the sweet track that trailrunners once cruised on. Deadfall will plague it for a decade to come, and I'm not sure the smooth tread will ever return. The sections I encountered were Y-bar-esque.

The flood damage down below it remarkable. The shelves above the drainages look better than expected and I hope for a quicker recovery here.

All told, it was an enjoyable day on the 2nd highest peak Arizona allows you to visit in summer. I enjoy taking stock of the effects of fire and flooding and keeping track of how the area recovers over time.

My partner had a friend passing through town who wanted to hike. Given specific mileage and elevation parameters, I found this little gem!
It’s been years since I’ve hiked Weatherford, but it felt familiar.

We started after 4:15 pm (I guess some people still have to work in the summer 🤷‍♀️) The side trail had some fun obstacles for the pups in the form of fallen trees. Obviously, it receives far less usage, but was still easy to follow. My expectations were exceeded as we made our way through the aspen groves. We got back to the main trail and quickly made it to the parking lot. After a short ride into town, we said our goodbyes and the dude and I closed out the day with Diablo Burger, as one does.

I'm low on peaks for the year so I suggested we bag these two. Technically I don't think Schultz counts, but I'm not going to complain. The lower part is a seasonal treat. With big weather changes in the forecast we decided to get out and enjoy this chilly and breezy day on the mountain before the return of winter weather.

We saw 9 others on the day, plus a couple of dogs. I got to hike with Jesse again, and met Jon for the first time. The trail runners were happy to have regular slow hikers along for this one as we are obviously the only ones who would carry the weight of required food, water, and clothing options for this kind of day. Being the nice guy that I am, I was happy to share with the lesser prepared.

It was extra cold at the saddle, but we were able to avoid the worst of the wind most of the day, even managing a good break on Doyle. A zoom view over to Hump looked positively miserable for the michelin men up top. The ridgeline down to Schultz is a mystery of saw-cleared trees. Was it part of a potential fireline during the Schultz Fire of 2010? It's tough to imagine another logical scenario.

As always, the crux is the steep descent off Schultz, but ample wildlife trails traverse the slope and provide numerous options before reaching the Weatherford wonderland below.

One more fall hike in the SF Peaks and probably my last trip up there for the year. Couldn't help but include Fremont and tied it into a loop sure to pass through at least some autumn color.

Schultz Tank at 4:30. Waterline for an hour and a half in the dark. Bright stars over dull city lights. Southern Waterline is probably a decade away from being a worthy fall inclusion. What small aspens there are were yellow.

Waterline around Inner Basin was just about prime. Impossible to say, can't help but try. It's not like it ever all peaks at the same time, so there's always bound to be some disappointment and surprise. The joys of fall.

Up to Fremont one last time this year. Folds of yellow all around. Warmer than expected, until the clouds swept in with the wind and I headed down.

SE ridge down to Weatherford. Good footing, bristlecones, meadows, shortest route back to Schultz Tank. Weatherford a mix of colors. Lower is on the way up, upper is on the way down.

Aspen side of the Weatherford Loop. More leaves on the ground than in the trees. Short window this year. Last of autumn color mostly in the bottom half.

Saw a few people all over the mountain. Temps from 40s to 70s. Everywhere but Kachina is peak or past from what I could see.

South side aspens mixed. Kachina entering peak, Weatherford exiting. Inner Basin peak and winding down.

Midday start in Flag at Weatherford loop. The parking lot was full so we went down the road and linked up with the trail from there. The beginning was gorgeous with lots of golden aspens and had barely anyone there! We started to see people hiking up when we linked up with the side of the trail that heads up to a peak. Aspens were more golden at the lower elevations on this hike. Cute little hike and nice warmup for the big hike the next day!

Day 4 of 4 Day Camping Trip.
Still chasing Fall Colors and thought I would see what Weatherford Canyon had to offer. I drove the entirety of Shultz Pass Road for the first time. Interesting road, too bad there's so much burn. I got a later start on the Hike itself due to all the bird action at Schultz Tank. If it hadn't been for that, I might have tried for Fremont Saddle. I went up quite a ways past the use trail, almost to the start of the switchbacks, but time wasn't on my side and I didn't want to start them and not get to the saddle itself. There was a little gold along the way, but Weatherford Canyon up high was still all green. That changed as I approached it down low on the use trail. Probably the most color I'd walked through on this trip. Spent some time with the Camera of course and then continued on down back to the truck. I decided to head on home a day early, as Autumn just wasn't as far along as I wanted it to be.

On a side note, I got to witness some karma on the Weatherford Trail, well inside the Wilderness Boundary. I got passed by a guy on a MTB and he was hauling pumpkin up the hill. I didn't think MTBs were allowed in the Wilderness. I ran into another Hiker and he informed me that they were not and that he had read the Biker the riot act up near the saddle. I didn't see the Biker again for a long time and thought maybe he went down a different way. But nope, he finally showed up walking his bike. I thought at first it was because of the other Hiker telling him it was illegal, but actually, it was because he suffered a flat rear tire and didn't have a spare. Good thing he didn't go 20 miles in.

Will pick up the Color Chase again soon.

Some Gold on way up to Kachina Wilderness. Some Gold on use trail, more than I've seen elsewhere. But Weatherford Canyon as a whole was still green.

Thot we'd dust off our backpacks to see if they still worked and headed up to Weatherford Canyon TH at Schultz Tank. RouteScout and my phone are barely talking to each other anymore so I used Ambika's route; therefore not sure of time and photo tagging will be slightly off as well.

We had a good breakfast at the Crown Railroad Cafe before heading out. It was only 1/2 hour drive from where we were staying. I tried to set up our hikes all for the east side of town and that worked well. We were lucky to find two parking spots right next to each other in a crowded lot. I think we got started around 9:45. On this section getting up to the junction we ran into several hikers. We would actually encounter quite a few people but it was spread out for the most part.

Once we hit the aspen it was a real treat as we continued our upward hiking to the meadow which seemed to flatten out for a bit before continuing up a little more in elevation. The views were outstanding from the meadow as we could see far to the southwest over to the flat-topped buttes. We could also see the burn area around Elden to the south and Schultz to the NE. I always prefer meadows over forests except in the fall of course. We came to another junction that has access to the SW trails. Might be interesting to check that out?

We reached the Kachina Wilderness sign where you continue on what appears to be part of the old road thru some of the pine forest. We stopped at the junction box for a quick second and then continued to an aspen corner where there was a man and his two dogs. We started to go up again but I thot we were supposed to be done with the UP part. As we rounded the corner Ambika checked RS and discovered we had blown by our turn. I believe Pam did the same thing so we headed back and just to the south of the box you head down the hill near where there are branches laid across part of the trail.

Once you get a little further in the canyon, there are more than a few obstacles to get around or over for about 1/2 mile or less. But there are more than just a few. We haven't hiked an obstacle course, let alone been out on the trails for awhile, so this tested us a bit  . All survived. It's quite amazing to be in such a thick forest of aspen on a non-maintained trail as we had to navigate this little used path.

We finally came out of it after enjoying the ferns and the sounds of the quaking aspen above us. We took a quick break altho I had nothing to snack on :o ; I thot I did but... Next we came to an area that had an aspen trunk crash so that was interesting. We also found remnants from the old red clay pipe casing and from here you could see where they had spread branches across the road to get here. I saw about 1/2 dozen of the birds with the blue and rust (Bunting?) but just couldn't get a good picture. Good thing @outdoorlover covers birds for us.

We finished off the last of the aspen and were soon back where we started. It was getting a tad warmer but still a lovely day for a leisurely hike in the mountains. We were going to picnic by the lake but it really seemed too hot so we opted to go back to town, have an early dinner and then go to Buffalo Park.

Hike 2 of 3. My new Trail Runners drew this Hike. Same Trail Runners I had before, just updated. Like my old Trail runners, I developed hots spots initially, but I think changing socks will help with that and my feet get used to them too. They did fine and will do even better after a couple more hikes and tweaking the socks.

Did this CW upon Jake's suggestion and he was spot on. The Description doesn't include the intersection with the Arizona Trail, but just know, that that intersection is NOT the 1st Intersection with the use trail that he lists in his description. I took a break next to some nice Aspen along the Weatherford and when I started up again, I ended up blowing by the 2nd Intersection. So I got some extra mileage and AEG in before I realized that RS had intermittently stopped again and that I missed the turnoff. Got back on track and took the Use Trail down.

Remarkably this Trail is still in pretty good shape although there is some deadfall along the way which is all easily negotiated, one way or another. Looked for Aspen Spring, and finally found it, but it's dry. There is some flora encroachment on the trail in places, but unless you hate brushing up against 4+ foot high Ferns, you'll be fine. The Aspen area comes later than you think, but it's worth the loop for sure. After seeing what upper Weatherford looked like from above, that Aspen stand goes almost all the way up the Canyon, you just catch the lower part when you intersect it on that Trail. Got some photos and just enjoyed the Hike at a fairly leisurely pace. Trail Runners were a bit problematic, but I expected it on their first outing due to experience with the old ones.

Before and after the Loop, I visited Shultz Tank. First time at this TH, so it was all new. The Dragons were numerous and even included some Butterflies in the mix. TH Parking was almost full, both at the start and at the end. Busy place. Good Hike and a nice forest experience for sure.

To be clear 556 is a fine road, rather than 420 east of Schultz Pass which absolutely requires 4wd. But 420 from the 180 is a graded wonderland that is no problem for any passenger vehicle.

Hiking was pleasant. Few others, nice colors. Went up the trail to the 9500 foot contour before dropping into the canyon for the return trip. Found a recent lion kill that was a bit disconcerting because there was enough meat there that I was pretty sure we were being surveilled. Otherwise a fun day on the mountain.

Weatherford Canyon Loop
This gem has had dead brush at the beginning for years now. It's not posted closed. Probably to keep the #102 traffic on course. Yet wouldn't surprise me if there was a save the aspen bark beetle group. This dense stand of thin Aspens is best experienced.

#102
We met a couple guys at "a" saddle with a controversial name before heading up to Doyle Peak. They recognized Bruce and mentioned we crossed paths on our Sept 7th Kendrick Loop!

Doyle
Sub peaks are about as exciting as a pudding jerky. Bruce took a stab at this one years ago while I took a nap at the saddle. Heading up is steep. The chance of sliding back is certainly present. It's not horrible. Maybe 20 ft max without a stable rock or tree limb to grab for balance. I was surprised at the presence of a wicked thorn bush. Looked like it would eat catclaw. No trouble avoiding, just seemed odd for 11,000 ft.

Gotta say, this sub peak is pretty sweet. The view of Humphrey's is the fab dark red and black view you get along upper Weatherford. The bonus is an overview of Volcano National Monument. The icing is the peak itself.

Drop to Waterline Road
Complained enough about it on the hike. No need to beat that drum again. Deep crunchy Aspen leaves was a first for myself. Bruce got the Explorer bug trying a new route down from 11060. His motivation to pave paradise fell short of putting up a parking lot. In the end he hit the high note and it worked out.

Waterline Road
Excellent tread. The tunnel was 10.24 billion times more exciting than anticipated. Even after hearing about it every ten minutes for 8.5 hours.

Up North to chase color.

We had no interest in fighting parking at the Lockett Meadow TH.

I'd never been to the top of Doyle to pay a visit to the cabin, so I cobbled together this loop.

Weatherford Canyon
This was a last second change and should be the "go to" way to get to the top during peeping season. It bypasses a portion of the Weatherford proper trail, but surrounds you in aspens. If you just want to sample the colors, do the short loop that is published on site

Weatherford Trail
This one never disappoints. Not only up close views of the colors, but of the color off in the distance also.

Doyle Peak
It's a steep little climb from the saddle for an old guy like me. The climb is about 500' in .3 of a mile.
The cabin has seen recent renovation. Views from our lunch spot were top notch, albeit a tad chili.

Descending to the east to 11045 was pretty easy through the forest. From 11045 to 11060 was slower going with the rock hopping and stayed that way until we hit the trees again. Plenty of areas of Aspen and seems to be a remote area that holds quite a few elk.

Waterline Trail
This road is popular with the Mountain Bikers for accessing the IB. We saw quite a few. Evidence of the past fire here, places quite the scar on a large area of this part of the hike. I'd been wanting to visit the area on topos marked as "Tunnel". That itch has been scratched. I built it up all day for Joe, he was not disappointed.

I drove in from 89 from the east, instead of coming in from 180 to get to the Shultz Pass TH. This way in is tons smoother and takes a few less minutes.

Temps ranged from perfect, to cool, with the breeze.

Kachina Trail #150
Excited the first time I hiked it. Great for loops & Autumn. Otherwise I'm not a huge fan.

Weatherford Canyon Loop
Intense, near and dear stroll through aspens. Loved it and will include it when possible. High canopy due to dense trees might not be the best aspen autumn foliage show. Certainly worthy to pencil in once. A few trees to climb over should keep the riff raff out.

Weatherford Trail #102
We both struggled more than the good ol' days. 3 or 4 breaks before the real Doyle Saddle. More hikers than I've ever seen before Doyle. The stretch to #151 is still a solid favorite.

Humphreys Summit Trail #151
Eerie ghost town, just sad. We decided early on to abort the summit stretch due to pace.

Synopsis
Yellow truck, primrose, hollow log... check! Perfect Weather save a touch warm in the canyon. Made an effort to consistently drink and snack throughout the hike. Ten miles on a quart at 100 degrees doesn't phase me. Bad experiences at altitude are etched in my mind. Hydrating paid off the next morning. Woke up energized and pounded out a good ol' fashion horribly crowded urban hike... there's no place like home.

An isolated instance of Sulphur Buckwheat on Kachina #151. The eye catcher was Golden-Beard Penstemon.

Parry's Primrose is a stinky staple of upper Weatherford. While the purple has wilted down you can still fondle the respiratory screamer via gentle rancid drifts.

Sneezeweed or yellow coneflower dying off in occasional small scattered areas. Spotted a few yellow columbine in the upper switchbacks of #151. New Mexico Vervain dabbled in the short stretch across snowbowl among substantial Silverstem Lupine!

After spending a week at sea level, we headed to the high country and "The Peaks" of Flag for the cool weather.

From the Humphrey's lot we headed CCW on the Kachina #150 for just shy of 7 miles. This is a roller coaster through the old growth pines, and my favorite, the wide open views in meadows an ferns.

First time in Weatherford Canyon. There in a decent use trail going through here. The aspens in this section are way thick. This was the warmest portion of the day with no freshening breeze in the dense aspens. This is a great alternative route for going up or down the Weatherford Trail. I will have to re-checkout this out in the fall.

The Weatherford Trail #102, is a steady climb to the Doyle Saddle. Big views on the way up. Saw more people on this section, than ever before. From Doyle Saddle to Agassiz Saddle, is one of my favorite sections of trail in the state. I love the views to the Inner Basin and peaks. I struggled a bit with the elevation.

Reaching the Humphrey's Saddle we were shocked to seen no one.

The Humphreys Summit Trail #51, is my least favorite portion of this loop. No views and endless rocks and roots.

Great weather on the day. We were actually cool in a few places. A return to the valley cured that.

We didn't want to hang out with the tourist in the Inner Basin, so we went with Weatherford for the obligatory fall colors hike on the peaks. The colors seem to be about a week, or so out, but we still enjoyed them. We turned around at Doyle Saddle after a long break. We started to an empty parking lot and finished to a full lot, with nearly all of the foot traffic coming in the final few miles. The shoulder is getting better, as I was able to wear the shoulder strap on it for the first half of the hike, but it was starting to throb a little by the time we got to Doyle, so I went with one strap for the way down.

Reached the trailhead in the evening, met some hiking groups on the main trail going down, then turned right to the side trail and starting from there had the whole thing to myself, squirrels and owls. 1:00 up, 0:45 down.

Really wanted to see some fall color this weekend, and this hike looked like a winner. Wasn't sure if we should go this weekend or wait til next, but I was impatient. My first time here. This is probably one of the most beautiful trails I've ever been on. The parking lot was overflowing and we had to park a bit down the road in one of the small pullouts, but the trail didn't feel crowded. After taking the trail down from the 2nd junction we only saw a handful of people. The weather was very nice... sunny and pleasant.

I don't know if this was the peak time to go, but it was definitely close. Most of the older stands of aspens were still green, but all the younger trees had at least some gold to them. Some stands were definitely at their peak. The golden aspen tunnels after heading back down were quite amazing. I could have stayed there all day. My phone's camera just can't quite capture the colors. You're probably gonna be sick of looking at aspens by the end of my photoset...

Surprisingly rocky trail that made this a little challenging without proper shoes. Beautiful scenery even before things have come into bloom and pretty wild walking through the scorched portion of the forest. The aspens lining the second portion must look incredible in season. The forest opens up a little into meadows before reaching the Kachina trail junction. I decided to stick to the Weatherford and the trail descends into thick tall pines before sloping into a mini meadow in a valley with a great view. Lastly I went passed the sign for the Saddle another 4 miles off before turning sharply left around the ridge and the opening to an incredible view looking towards Mt. Elden. I wasn't able to go too much further as this was my first hike and decided to turn around. Overall a 3 mile hike each way with 1.5 hours up and 1 hour back with generous breaks.
