Coco finally closed the roads up high, which resulted in the peaceful conditions I prefer. Snow last week followed by a super melt and temps that made normal February hiking destinations unpalatable. I figured there'd be some lingering snow in the drainages and that turned out to be true. In fact, there was more than expected, though we were never more than 50 yards from dry ground.

There was ample runoff in Bear Canyon (and every single side drainage, or slight depression where water could flow). I ballparked 5+ cfs and when you factor in all the other drainages that feed into it downstream, along with the Clear Creek fork, I was curious to see how Cragin was doing. Indeed, it is up an impressive 15 feet in the past week, and at 70% full is 50 feet higher than it was at this time last year. There's not much snow left to melt, so I wouldn't think it could get any higher than 75% without more storms this spring.

The only other hiker encountered on the day made a cabin loop attempt but was thwarted at the FR95 washout crossing as it was running too high and fast for him to find a safe way across.

On the Haught/AZT, there were about a half dozen mandatory wet crossings, so despite trudging through several inches of snow and wading across shin-deep creeks, the rim temps near 70 made the day quite enjoyable. Encountered tracks of a single canid much of the day. I don't think I could identify coyote v wolf track if I spent a year studying them and I didn't bother looking up any recent collar pings in the area, so I default to yote.

Fun to experience this part of the world in conditions like this — typical of mid-April — and that's a little bit depressing.

Could have probably tagged 10 other east west mid upr lwr loop cyn hikes and about 5 acridomorpha camps all in the same area. Hit about 60 unique lampropeltis waypoints that crashed my RS. Interestingly, RS tallied 16.98, reported 16.84. Gaia tallied 14.5 and reported 15.23. I don't pay much attention to these things, but the discrepancy is notable and I mention it only for the people who find their life's meaning in the specifics, and the poor programmer who has to respond to their complaints.

I've hiked all of this passage already, except for the almost half mile from the Rim Road to the General Springs TH. I save all my GPS tracks of every hike I do on my computer, so I can't have that gap when I look at my AZT progress. Also, even though I've hiked all the Highline Trail portion of this passage, I seem to have lost the track for that. it turns out they've done some extensive maintenance and re-routes on that section, but more on that later. :SB:

I started from the Washington Park TH and headed up the Colonel Devin to my main goal. I did this hike with my wife and kids 14 years ago :o, so it was interesting to be back again. Crazy how time flies. I think the kids did better then they would today, as they no longer have the patience to spend a day with a parent on a vision quest dayhike.

Less than a half mile in there was a cow next to the trail in the vegetation. Not used to seeing that. the beginning up this trail was very cool, almost chilly, and very shady. the vegetation as well as being in a canyon with the sun low in the sky helped with this. the creek was running nicely, which made for the rare pleasant experience of hearing running water while hiking in AZ. Very big contrast from Phoenix right now.

As I got higher the weather stayed cool and the wind picked up. I made it to General Springs, walked a bit further up the trail to make sure my tracks overlapped, and headed back. I also checked out the cabin, which is in very nice shape. On the way back down the trail, the wind was still pretty strong which made me have to take off my hat at times to avoid losing it. : rambo :

Went up to check out the railroad tunnel like we did in 2011. I forgot how dicey the trail is at the final ascent, very loose dirt and rock and nearly vertical. I checked the triplog from then and I noted the conditions as the same then. I have very dim memories and can't imagine now how we got the kids up and back along that section 8-[ .

From the railroad tunnel back to the trailhead was when I saw the most foot traffic. Lots of people on their way up. Saw 3 deer a half mile from the TH, 2 young bucks in felt and one doe. I hid behind a tree because I saw them first but I was soon spotted. They all stood and stared at me giving me time to get pics until I decided to start walking, then they bolted.

Ate lunch in my car at the trailhead and then headed out on the Highline westbound to get a track of the AZT that I've made by hiking it. I originally split the overall track at the 3 mile mark planning to only do 3 miles out and back. With the cooler weather than I expected, I decided to make it a 4 mile out and back. I did both a 4 mile out and back and got to the exact point where I had split the track at 3 miles. Why? Because this section of the Highline/AZT has several re-routes which after only 3 miles adds an extra mile. Some of these reroutes made sense. there was less elevation gain and in at least one case better views. However, I think even on the AZT website, the maps that show this passage are nearly the same as the AZT26 track on HAZ, which can give misleading info for the length of the hike if you're planning a dayhike. I was fine, but I can see how this has potential to cause problems for planning purposes. :SB: :M2C: On the way back I paid attention and hiked the old alignment, which is still there and still hikeable even with the sticks and rocks in place to try to hide it.

The views to the south along the Highline here of the vast ponderosa forest were a highlight. Very cool to see that after being in the desert heat so much lately. The other highlight was crossing Chase Creek, which is more of a small stream. There is sign there that states that fishing is not permitted. After seeing that I looked into a pool by the trail crossing and noticed several very small trout swimming there. I can't imagine anyone wanting to try to fish for something so small, but the sign is there for a reason obviously.

We had a report that the trail was in need of some brushing, we thought we had taken care of it in December but figured we’d take another look. Not so much brushing, but we did run into a couple deadfall that we cleared off the trail. Had the whole place to ourselves today.

After enjoying the Waterwheel / Ellison Creek Cascades area, we continued up the canyon to the Washington Park TH for the daily double on the Colonel Devin Trail. Added a side trip up to the RR Tunnel.

The first mile of the Devin trail is a real gem--gurgling creek and spring water on the side of the trail (sometimes both sides); lush, green ground cover, with forest shade canopy. Truly delightful. The remains of the Pieper Fish Hatcher is particularly lush. (NOTE: the official HAZ route tracks the powerline road in this section--definitely DON'T take that route; follow the creek, starting at the TH on the NE corner of the parking area).

After the first mile, the trail emerges from the lush area and joins the powerline road. In another 1/4 mile, the springs go underground, leaving the trail waterless and generally shade-less for a stretch, until the turn off to the RR Tunnel trail, where the trail dips back into the forest near the remains of the Haught cabin.

The final climb up to the RR Tunnel is steep and a little loose in parts. I wasn't aware that outside the tunnel is a well-constructed rock cabin. Cool bonus.

After exploring the tunnel, I decided to continue up and off-trail it to FR 300, rather than going back down and around. It's a short distance and the scrambling looked do-able. Some class 3-4 scrambling, but nothing too hairy, and pretty easy to pick and choose a path that avoids any thorny/scratchy bushwhacking.

Once on FR300, I walked the short distance back down to the upper C. Devin/RR Tunnel TH. There's a nice AZ Trail sign there, along with a monument to the Apache Wars battle of Big Dry Wash.

On the descent, I stayed on the RR Tunnel trail, as it veered into the trees and looked a little less steep/rocky, though there is a more direct route down, along the powerlines.

All in all, this one exceeded my expectations.

Pump Station Route, lame, not worth it, unless you hike some of it (maybe half mile) from the north side (Highline) to the red slickrock section. Colonel Devin is nicer (barely) than See Canyon Spring.

I've been wondering how long it would take me to hike my loaded mountain bike up the colonel Devin trail as compared to backpacking trips, possibly opening up future riding loops. Seventy eight minutes it took going up, thirteen minutes longer. Zero percent chance of rain, ha! It took 32 minutes coming down, all rideable after the little rock fort. The east Verde is loaded with Gila trout once again this year.

A huge Ponderosa deadfall alongside the Colonel Devin trail created a large hole where the root ball used to be. A group of us reduced the size of the 12 foot high vertical root ball and filled in the hole. Saw 6 thru hikers and 5 day hikers.

A group of us armored 5 more drainages along the reroutes built last year. Saw 4 thru hikers.

After lunch we moved to Washington Park and hiked up the Colonel Devin trail to the second bridge and took down a dead tree that was threatening to fall on the bridge. We used a rope to provide enough tension to cause the tree to fall away from the bridge and Shawn cut the wedge on the side of tree to also cause it to fall where we wanted. It all worked perfectly and it even broke into two pieces on loud contact with the ground!

Originally was gonna go camping but was too lazy, so I headed up to Washington Park to run a cabin loop with some friends. Probably have done this one at least a half dozen times, but it's always worth another go. Started at around 8:30 am hoping to get done before the storms hit, but wasn't confident in that.

I always like to get the Rim Rd section over with first; luckily with the recent rain it wasn't too dusty. Tried to follow the Gen Crook trail tread a couple of times, but it's spotty.

Everything is nice and green now, some of the small drainages on Houston Bros had water, but surprisingly there wasn't any more water at Aspen Spring or Pinchot Cabin than there was a month or so ago. Started hearing thunder at Bear Canyon or so, but the storms seemed to be moving in a favorable direction, and we managed to avoid them. Didn't get any rain until after we left the trailhead.

I have always loved this trail with a little snow and today was no different. We only went in a mile and a half, but even that felt a little strenuous with breaking trail for most of the way. The dogs had a blast as one might expect and we were happy to get out in a little snow ourselves. All of the major drainages along the 87 were flowing and the Mazzies had a nice looking snow line. These recent storms are doing the mountains well.

The gate near the top of the Col Devin trail fell victim to a falling rock, and the rancher felt his cattle were moving up the rim along this trail. I doubt that without someone, or more likely something chasing them. This is bear and lion country so maybe the wayward cows had a good excuse to stray.

Regardless, since the trail is also part of the Arizona Trail, the FS asked if the ATA was interested in installing a special gate there. We visited the site a few weeks ago and found that the ground and back wall is all rock, and while we have installed a steel AZT gate in rock, at Bray Creek, this just didn’t seem to warrant such heroics. Acknowledging that a regular gate to keep the cows home is not really our job, since we were already involved to some extent a couple of us went out today to put in a wire cowboy gate.

We anchored the wires to the sandstone wall with steel anchor bolts and tied the latch end off on a tree. The upright stays came from an oak thicket just downhill from the gate. All quite simple but it took most of the day. Several day hikers came by but no AZT thru-hikers.

The real story began as we were back on Highway 87 returning to Pine when the dreaded “where’s my phone” panic hit. Not in the car, so back out the Rim Road, down and up the trail and back down. As we were standing at the gate Tracy’s phone rang. “We found your phone,” said the saintly Samaritan calling from Washington Park, a mile or so downhill. She left it at Home Depot in Payson and we picked it up there. Hallelujah!

Another fine day on the AZT!

Beautiful solo hike at a quiet, serene place. I went a mile on highline before deciding I was more feeling a streamside stroll and turning around towards Colonel Devin. The weather was perfect and it was super lush with lots of pretty purple flowers.

I followed a bunch of little side paths to check out various cascades. When I got to the second bridge I decided to turn around as I needed to find and set up camp for the night. This is such a beautiful trail and the hike was exactly what the doctor ordered!

P.S. The road to Washington Park TH is in a bit of rough shape right now. Nothing AWFUL but there were quite a few big potholes, larger rocks and tons of ruts. The gravel was oddly slippery and it was annoying so I actually put it in 4WD for the last stretch there. Not necessary, but helpful if you’re lazy  I still think a car could be okay if they have good tires and go extremely slow. I drove my sedan there in the past but the road was way better back then.

Powered up the CDT, grazed across some fresh rim road gravel and then disappeared into the fun stuff.
A remarkable and enjoyable day under perfect conditions in a very special place to me.
Pretty cool experience to spend the day with my dog Mellow walking along the very same path of my beloved Payton who will forever live and roam in those heavenly high country canyons.
Made it back home before supper and brought home some satisfied boots and chalky antlers.

For some reason, I've always skipped the side trip to the railroad tunnel. I had no idea it was so, uh, deep.
Apparently they gave up on this project after a few hours of effort.

Anyway, nice one and done I guess.

Postholed all over Fred for a while. Had some fun in a side canyon or three. Snow angels, and inappropriate sculptures. The usual.

We startled a through hiker who wasn't expecting snow art. Five or six (the last one wasn't so sure she would be social) were set to spend an entertaining night together at the cabin with some trail magic we decided to share.

Can't complain about wringing out another Arizona day in the snow. :y:

3 Day Camping Trip in search of Fall Colors. See Foliage Report for Details. Met a Friend of mine and we checked out several locations including Washington Park, Bear Canyon, an area off FR 208 and part of See Canyon on Day 1. Also called in a Forest Fire starting below the Rim. Turned out to be a structure Fire near Haigler Creek and it was extinguished in short order as the smoke disappeared rather quickly. I was impressed as it looked like it could turn into a torcher pretty quick.

Day 2 had us hiking into See Spring only to be disappointed there. So we headed for Workman Creek. Color was better there, but still not what we hoped for.

Day 3 had us dinking around Workman some more, and then I started the trip home. Stopping in to visit my Aunt in Tonto Basin and staying around Roosevelt Lake in hopes of a Sunset. And by the way, for those interested, Big Daddy's Pizza is still open. Last time through there, they had it up for Sale over a year ago.

Decent Trip, but Fall is very irregular and unpredictable. Prime in a few spots, but not Prime just 1/2 mile away or 100 feet away. Storm Damage was evident in many places and killed Autumn in several places for good. My Friend stated that it had hailed on the Rim during the storm and it showed.

Photos soon.

Washington Park: Color at the first bridge had you celebrating, but it wasn't to be. Green as can be from there on up.
Bear Canyon Upper - West Bear: Done. Leaves on Trees are completely gone.
Top of the Rim is done. Nothing left to see unless you find a remote, protected pocket.
See Canyon: Prime at the Trailhead. Prime along lower Christopher Creek in places.
See Canyon Spring: Summer Green prevails with just a few changing here and there.
Workman Creek: Slopes are Prime. Aspens are Prime. Sycamores and Oaks looking good as well. Most Maples at the Water are still green. Creek is very low, Falls are trickling.
