john and i decided to finish our rock crossing collection
got going earlier saturday, around 0615
this time we drove to the trailhead
retraced our steps on 18a & 18b
just before heading up 18c, john spotted a herd of about 30 elk in the drainage
cool to see them run straight up the side of the canyon
nice to see these trails in the daylight
explored a bit
we went past the end of 18c, might be fun to take telephone ridge to the cabin loop sometime
looked for the old trail cut on @chumley's gps route
took a side trail coming off 18c that offered good views of the canyon
back at the dry north branch of the reservoir, we walked east a bit
a few pools but that was it
the only person we saw on any of our four hikes was a guy with fishing gear coming down 18a
not sure how far he would have to walk to find water
this is an interesting area, glad we went back
great trip, thanks john :)

Last hike of our camping trip near Blue Ridge reservoir. We went back to finish all the Rock Crossing trail segments. We also did some extra exploring in three places. Saw a large herd of about 30 elk.
Fun hike and trip. Thanks Kelly! :)

It was looking like we were officially going into "oh crap it's hot" territory for the next few weeks/months so decided to get in a trip on the rim while it still wasn't too bad. Was just looking for a simple relaxing hike so I decided to head up to Rock Crossing after work on Friday and then do the Eastern Cabin loop.

Hadn't been to 18c before, so I took that down and explored a little bit to the East.. Didn't go too far as I had gotten there around 4 and it was pretty thick. Ended up camping at the spot above where it crosses to 18b. Not a bad site and easy access to the water where I did a little fishing; meant to bring my normal reel/rod but only had my tenkara which wasn't the best for this spot. Did manage to get 2 little guys but that was it which was sad since I could see them jumping all over the place but just couldn't reach them.
The night got all the way down to 40 which was fantastic. The next morning I woke up and as I was having coffee, was serenaded by a boat blasting music. Ah, the joys of nature. I stayed at camp a little longer than intended so instead of hiking from there and doing the loop and returning to the car, I figured I'd shave 4 miles off by hiking to my car and and then starting from barbershop. Did that, hiked clockwise (happy I did that to get the hilly part out of the way before it got too hot) and ended at Merritt draw. I saw a very high number families headed to Dane; that place must have been insanely busy! It didn't get quite as cool that night as the first but was still pleasant. Hiked out the next morning quickly as, after climbing out of Merritt, it's a pretty nice and flat jaunt along U-Bar and Houston. Got done early enough that it was around 11 when I rolled through Camp Verde where I've been slowly picking away at all the little restaurants there. Ended up at Verde Brewing which is in this weird little industrial area. Not a huge menu but the beer was cold and decent and the food was okay. Probably not somewhere I'd go again unless I'm craving some nachos, but not a bad place by any stretch.
Note, there are a few spots on the 2 mile spur to rock crossing that I'm not sure a normal sedan would be a good idea but it's only in certain spots so you might still be able to get away with it.

I received an invite to hike with the Moe, Curley and a couple of their friends Ryan and Hillary.

I met them at their campsite just south of CC Cragin at the crack of 8:30am. After setting up the shuttle, we started hiking a bit after 9:00am. 9L, Ryan and Hillary were just doing Long Draw, General Springs Canyon with us. They were going to float around on the lake after that.

Chums and I headed up Bear Canyon. We'd actually seen quite a bit of bear sign to this point. We opted to add a couple of miles and hike up Quien Sabe Draw (Translated - Who Knows Draw) to the Fred Haught #141 at the spring.

After lunch at Pinchot cabin, we headed down Houston Draw. Easy walking to begin with, and the draw turned more canyonlike the closer we got to the lake. The only semi tricky portion was the 100 yards when the lake started, on the sidehill traverse to get to the ridgeline going up.

Chums took a dip in the lake and chatted up the campers fishing there.

Up Telephone Ridge from the lake for the steepest climb of the day. Down Rock Crossing 8C to 8B and up to FR123 to finish a fun day in Rim Country.

We were camping in the area so I scanned the map for places I haven't previously explored.

We started down the grassy Long Draw, turned left down General and splashed through the creek down to the lake, where I knew the level (6,696) was just below the B-C crossing. From here we headed up Bear before veering into Quien Sabe. Fred brought us across to Houston. A quick break at the guard station before heading downstream back to the lake. This would be tough with higher water as the canyon tightens up considerably right at the confluence. We were able to scramble up the hillside.

I took a refreshing dip in the lake before climbing the hill up to Telephone Ridge. We finished up by returning to 123 via Rock Crossing C and B. We had set up a shuttle to save a couple of miles of road walk.

Eagle took off and I headed down the north side of B to meet up with the others for a little bit of lake time. A couple of groups camped along the shore gathered firewood as I floated, because obviously they just don't gaf about the place.

Besides that, another great day in rim canyons.

The Rock Crossing Trail(s) have been on my list for ever. I've always wanted to hike all 3 sections as part of a loop. With CC Cragin being at 28% capacity and almost 60' down from full, I put a loop together. I parked in the pulloff next to FR751 and started on 18A.

18A is well defined and in good shape. At the bottom, I stepped over the East Clear Creek arm and made my way up the other side, 18B.

Once again, this segment up to the pumping station is a good tread. Close to the pumping station I took FR123 to the NE to get some better views of the reservoir. Back on 18B, the trail is a 2 track for a bit. At the end of the 2 track, the actual trail makes a sharp left. I missed that and just took the ridgeline down.

Going up 18C, the track gets a little faint towards the top. I was surprised to find a family camping at the TH.

To complete my loop, I had to drop into and out of Houston Draw and follow an old FR to Hart point. I had my lunch here before attempting to drop down into East Clear Creek. This was the part of my route that concerned me most because of the tight topo lines on the map. It was steep, but it all worked out.

I'd been able to keep my feet dry at all crossings so far, but that was not the case in East Clear Creek. I had 2 crossings that i could not avoid getting my feet wet.

After climbing up to the dam road, the remainder of the hike was was a road walk back to where I parked.

This was a fun little loop that I'd do again.

Started up Colonel Devin from a full parking lot at WP on Friday at 2PM. The road section is nice if only for the views, down to Houston Brothers. I had a slight detour on 300G looking for a shortcut, nothing doing, wasted an hour is all. There was a nice filterable flow just before the intersection with Barbershop Trail. I continued on Houston Bros and settled into a Grasshopper recommended campsite right at dusk. Would be a very nice spot with a fire... Broke camp at 6AM and continued on past an empty Aspen spring area, and 1 couple camped at Pinchot. I cruised up 95 and down 139A to it's northern terminus. There was a couple of inflatable paddle boaters camped half way down the Rock Crossing trail, but the spots at the end were empty. I settled into my favorite. Lots of kayaks and canoes out on the lake as you would expect. People ended up filling all of the usual camp sites in this area, and some found new ones. Pretty cold night actually. Broke camp at 7AM and backtracked towards Fred Haught. The 95 wash out is more difficult to negotiate as it continues to erode on both sides. The road has lots of weeds growing in it from inactivity. Smooth sailing all the way back to the rim with plenty of people loaded up heading in for a few nights. Numerous people climbing Colonel Devin as I descended. The 3 crossings of East Verde were ridiculous, probably a thousand cars between the three crossings parked along the road because the lots are taped off, people everywhere, what a zoo. North bound 87 had a brush fire caused traffic jam for 5+ miles north of Mt. Ord. Southbound 87 had a truck and camper roll over traffic jam south of Mt. Ord. Next weekend, Monday afternoon, could be epic!

Left at 4AM with my canoe and cruised into the lake. Road 751 is good, but wait until a few gully washing rains hit the last mile of it. The boat ramp was already busy at 6:30 but I did not have to wait. Lots of folks out fishing too. Just around from the dam as you enter the southern arm of the lake, the debris field of floating logs had me second guessing my destination of Bear Canyon. It was slow going for a bit but the debris was negotiable, would not want to be riding anything inflated though. After that, the lake really opened up, the water was much more clear, and just about every campsite was taken, except the one I like at Bear Canyon. Got some rain later in the day that lingered into the evening. Great night to hang under a tarp. Left plenty of firewood under the rock ledge for the next. Smooth sailing until back to the boat launch. Avoid this area on Sundays around 11AM!
The signs prohibiting swimming around the boat launch are ineffective.

Decided to hit the Cabin Loop when it isn't raining for a change. Marched up the Col. Devin at 6:30am and hit the rim road down to Houston Bros. Quick stop at the B-shop turn off, then down to a favorite water spot for a refill. Some folks were camped at Aspen spring but Pinchot was empty and quiet. Continued on down the road to the turnoff for the lake and hiked into an empty spot. There were some folks camped a bit further down, but I like the first little spot. Hung the hammock and chilled, fished a little, caught 1 rainbow and lost two others on downed trees. I spoke to others that were catching "stockers" too. Quiet night, but the sun comes up early these days. The washout on FR95 is a pain. Fred Haught was quiet on the return as well.

Launched again from Washington Park at 7AM. Colonel Devin creek, I mean trail, was very wet. Lots of water of course all along Fred Haught. The falls were running nicely. Only one wet foot crossing a few miles in. Clouds began building as I left FR 95 onto 139. Smooth trac all the rest of the way keeping left at the split. Nice trail leading down to an empty lake. Both Bear Canyon and General Springs creeks were flowing clear but strong. There are two nice camp sites, I chose the first one as it was closer to the nice little cave, I was thinking about lightning. The other spot was a bit further down, probably a better spot with no rain. With no lake here I was able to cross the creek with ease and explore some other really nice camp sites further downstream. You could easily continue on the Rock Crossing B trail if you wanted. Waited out a 2 hour storm in a small cave, then set up camp. No more rain after 4PM.
Camp fire was made possible by lots of tinder hiding inside all of the numerous caves that are everywhere around here. I counted 5 in just my short time exploring around. Super quiet down there, except for the car alarm in the distance at around 9PM? Serious fog set in overnight and lingered during my hike out. Smooth sailing all the way, very few people out. Ran into Kyle and Lily again, who had hiked up from Washington Park also, twice in three weeks. Saw a rattlesnake along the new section of trail at the first bridge crossing.

Quick overnighter for some peace & quiet. Got started late, just as the storms started. Rainfall wasn't too heavy in Gen. Springs Cyn but lightning got a little too close for comfort. Took the side trip over to Fred Haught Cabin to let the worst of it pass, before hitting the upcoming ridges (Turkey Pen, Fred Haught & Telephone). 30mins later, the skies were quiet despite continued rain. The portion of Fred Haught Trail that dips in and out of Bear Canyon was pretty much entirely burned. Low intensity, though, and grasses and wildflowers were already filling in the landscape. The destination for the evening was Rock Crossing #18C at C.C. Cragin and a secluded camp spot reported by Chumley in a recent triplog. Walked to the end of FR139A and made it there just in time to watch a bald eagle fly over and shed a small feather that landed next to me. Definitely a scenic little spot to call home for a night. Made a nice fire and cooked dinner in the rain. It dispersed just as I began to eat and unwind for the night. The wet, chilly night was nice respite from the summer heat. Just as I finished packing up in the morning, a boom of thunder sent me on my way. Skies began to clear and the stroll back to the TH was pleasant. Everything was green and water was plentiful. Crossed paths with Lee and Jackie taking the dogs out to splash in some of that water. Overall, a successful little getaway into the pines.

Rock Crossing is a trail that preceded the construction of Blue Ridge Reservoir in 1965 (now CC Cragin Reservoir). The trail construction is absolutely phenomenal. National Parks don't build trails as nicely as this trail was built!

Due to the reservoir filling the canyons which the trail previously crossed, the FS has officially divided the trail into three segments. Hiking the entire length would require swimming or using a flotation device to cross the lake between segments. At full pool, the distance between A and B at Rock Crossing is about 300 feet. The distance between B and C near the mouth of Bear Canyon is only 100 feet. Both crossings can be shorter at lower lake levels and the B-C crossing is often completely dry.

I hiked Segment B out and back, followed by segment A from the out and back, and finally segment C out and back. The photos are in that order, which may be a bit confusing. The photos are geotagged so you can see their location on the map. The descriptions below are all described one way from north to south, which is also how the official gps tracks are set up.

Segment A
Starts at an unmarked pull-out along FR751, which is the main road leading to CC Cragin Reservoir. There's one long switchback and the trail ends at the lake on the east side of a small cove. Depending on the lake level, a little bit of room to picnic, dive, and swim is available. The west side of the cove features a nice campsite that is frequently occupied.

Segment B
Starts on the south side of Rock Crossing on a large flat area that features a couple of frequently used lakeside campsites. The track begins right next to a nice overhanging rock "cave" that has been made into a rain shelter for campers. The trail climbs gently to the top of Battleground Ridge and the intersection with the end of FR123 and a large pumping station which takes water from the reservoir and moves it to the East Verde river near Payson.

The trail follows the road south for about 1/4 mile before a sign indicates the start of the route heading south to General Springs Canyon. It's another 1/4 mile along the old alignment of FR9709Q before the singletrack starts on the left and begins the scenic descent to the lake.

Segment C
This segment starts with a beautiful switchback that leads to a nice campsite above the junction of Bear Canyon and General Springs Canyon before following a steady traverse along the slope above Bear Canyon through a lightly burned fire scar. After a few minutes you reach an old double-track which leads the final stretch to the end of FR139A on Telephone Ridge. It's easiest to follow the double-track, but at the end it climbs more steeply than a nice hiking trail, because the original cut actually takes a more moderate route along a gentle grassy slope on the east side of the ridge. The cut here is indistinguishable except for some faint old blazes cut in the mature ponderosas.

History
From the Segment C trailhead at end of FR139A, it's a short 1.5 miles to the Fred Haught Trail and the old Pinchot Guard Station cabin. I haven't been able to confirm this, but I believe the Rock Crossing Trail was originally connected to the Cabin Loop system and was part of a main trail leading from Washington Park to Blue Ridge. It can still easily be hiked that way now if you don't mind the two swims. You could even make a loop with the AZT which now largely parallels this old route, avoiding the two lake crossings.

This one is a rarely used gem!
