Hangover loop with Merry Go Round addition this time. We saw the window insta spot on the way back down but didn’t stop for that one. Views at the top seemed like they were better.

Little trip to Sedona, mostly as a get together. Casner Canyon trail was suggested, and I mentioned the trail connecting it to Hangover, so we decided to give that a go. Almost managed to stay dry at the Oak Creek crossing, but ultimately didn't trust the grip on the rocks to do the the longest hop.

The Damfino junction was pretty obvious. Not marked, but any attempts by the FS to hide this trail have clearly been futile. Trail was easy to follow for a half mile or so, then it faded a bit. At one point we stayed along the rim above Oak Creek too long and had to go cross country back up the ridge. On the slickrock, we followed a shelf for awhile, but it eventually pinched off and we went farther up.

Once we got to the Mitten Ridge saddle, we decided we may as well do the loop. Hangover is always fun. When we got to where it jogged south before Cow Pies, we decided to go down a side drainage of Bear Wallow instead of staying with the trail. A couple of minor obstacles, one pour-off that required a bypass, some minor brush and deadfall, but overall it was fun. Got back to the trail right near the other Hangover junction.

Following the Damifino trail was a bit easier on the way back down. Stayed up at the top of the slickrock until we were right above the ridge crest, which I think is the best move.

Yard work in Camp Verde = Sedona hike. The Hangover has been on my to do list for quite awhile. One of my favorite trails that deserves a yearly visit. However, it’s been three years since my last visit. I was also anxious to try out our Honda Ridgeline on Schnebly Rd. Not much for off roading and I definitely feel like this qualifies. I went in to the first obvious vehicle pull off. The Munds Trail was directly adjacent to it. I was hoping to cut off enough mileage to make this hike doable for my wife. I shaved maybe a mile going into this spot. While I was hiking, I noted even further in, there was another pull off with picnic tables that would have shaved an additional mile off the hike (making the hiking distance closer to 6.5 miles). Not sure if the drive to either of these spots is worth the effort. It’s a slow drive. Hiking would be almost as fast and definitely more enjoyable.

Anyhow….Got on the trail at 5am. Did the trail CCW. I went in on the Munds Wagon for the first 2.4 miles. From where I started it was about .5 miles to reach the other pull off with the picnic tables and then it was an additional .5 miles to reach the first turnoff for the Hangover Trail. My preferred route is to take Munds to the Cow Pies. This keeps me out of the sun longer and when the sun does hit me it will be primarily at my back. Plus, in my mind, it saves the best (Hangover Trail) for last. Over the years, I’ve done Munds Wagon probably about 10 times. It looks like it has fallen on hard times. Never seen it this bad. There was a downed tree across one of the washes and quite a few trees that looked like they were dead (either through fire or disease) and then there were weeds crowding the trail to the point where you couldn’t even see the trail. I don’t consider this to be one of the back country trails and am surprised that the Sedona rangers would allow the trail to fall into this kind of condition. Made me curious about the other two trails.

The Cow Pies is a much shorter trail. The trail itself, starts off rather blah, but it transitions into the red rock playground soon enough. The views are great enough from the get-go that you are not worried about the initial mundaneness of the trail. Great way to build up the anticipation for the Hangover Trail. No trail issues on this section.

The Hangover Trail is one of the crème de la crème’s of the Sedona Trail System. It delivers both on “trail engagement” (that is, how entertaining is it to hike the trail) and on the views. For me, both these conditions are met throughout the hike. Not many trails can deliver for the full duration like Hangover. It’s about .5 mile scramble going along the slopes of the red rocks, before reaching the climb to the saddle. There was a lot of walking on a slant. My ankles were very annoyed with me at the end. There are white arrows painted on the rocks to try to keep you on track. These arrows are becoming faint so you have to look for them, however there is some dirt tread along the way that will show obvious use and confirm that you are still on trail. (The white arrows are fairly frequent, so if you don’t see any white arrows for a time or if you cross a dirt section that doesn’t show use it may mean you’ve wandered off trail). Following the arrows makes the climb to the saddle deceptively easy. Great views from the saddle! It’s hard to believe that the north side could be as entertaining as the south was, but it is in its own way. More of a dirt track (much easier to follow) with less of a slant on the ankles and with awesome views that are constantly changing. It’s on this side of the trail where you see how the trail gets its name. The trail holds its elevation until it gets to the west end, where it descends rapidly down the rock facing. The arrows on this side have been repainted so it is much easier to follow. The trail finishes by going through a “budding” forest that offers a little shade and tantalizing views of the surrounding mountains. Connecting back to Munds Wagon it was a mile hike back to the car.

As always, Awesome hike! Stunning views throughout. Had the trails to myself :) Didn’t see anyone, no wildlife and only two pink jeeps while I was out. Century plants were in full bloom. Don’t recall seeing so many at one time. Drive back was a little nerve racking. Scraped bottom twice, but didn’t have to share the road. So I avoided a pink jeep entourage. Little annoyed with my Garmin. Mileage for this hike is in doubt for a couple of reasons. The Garmin has a tendency to creep if I’m it moving. I was taking a lot of pictures and enjoying the views so I’m sure it “gave me” more miles than I actually did. But my Garmin also stopped tracking mid hike and it took me some time before I realized it. I think I lost about 20 ministers of my hike. Not sure why my Garmin did that. It was still showing a full charge at the end of the hike. That being said, I think these problems offset each other and the mileage is pretty close to what it should be.

decided to hit this up on the way out of town after a chilly night at pine flat. I was gonna do west fork but woke up to oak creek canyon filled with smoke from the prescribed burn in Flagstaff. Oh well, this hike could never get old for me. Love it!

Rounded up 3 hikers from Meetup. Parking full so parked across the street on the other side of the gate. This is the trail on the right side of the TH.

Munds Wagon Trail runs adjacent to Schnebly Hill Rd. Hangover trail is the most adventurous section and took the longest. Pay attention to RF. Cow Pies is short and connects to the Jeep rd.

Will have to return to drive Schnebly and do a different variation of this outing.

This was our second straight weekend in Sedona, and the plan today was the "Merry Hangover" route that combines the Hangover Loop with an out-and-back past Merry Go Round. There was a lot of smoke around Verde Valley as we drove up I-17, and we wondered how bad the air quality would be in Sedona, but it was clear when we got closer to town. Munds Wagon Trailhead was already full at 8AM, but we parked along Schnebly Hill Road, just inside the gate.

As we got started, I realized this was my sixth time hiking all or part of the Hangover Loop, but this would be the first time going counterclockwise. The scenery was every bit as good as I remembered, and the constant noise of tourists and jeep traffic along Schnebly Hill Road was just about as annoying as I remembered. We headed for the Merry Go Round first, and the popular window and platform along the edge of the cliff were covered with people, so we didn't stop.

The route continued north on Munds Wagon and was supposed to connect with Schenbly Hill Trail #158, but it was closed due to trail washouts, so we returned on Munds Wagon. I hadn't been up to the top of the Merry Go Round before, so we went up there to check it out. TboneKathy didn't go all the way up, but reaching the top wasn't too bad except for a narrow ledge or two. Great views from the top (and lots of graffiti carved into the rock :(), and it was nice to look down on the tourists below, both literally and figuratively. [ youtube video ]

We ate a snack near the top and battled gnats that left us covered in bites the next day. We started down just as a jeep full of tourists showed up, so our timing was perfect. The platform and window below were miraculously empty when we passed by, so we went out there for some pictures with the stunning backdrop, but I didn't go down into the window this time.

From there, we backtracked to Cow Pies to continue the loop. Once again (or still), great views along Mitten Ridge with the impressive red cliffs, and the landscape near the saddle looks almost Martian. On the other side of the saddle, we continued past the namesake overhangs and enjoyed the views of Wilson Mountain. Around the corner, Elephant Arch and came into view, and we made our way down the steep slickrock. That was my first time going down that section instead of up, but the grip on the slickrock is very solid.

Next up was the arch...the approach looked steeper than I remembered from a few years ago, but the good traction on the rock made it easier than it looked. TboneKathy didn't like the steepness near the top and stopped a little short of the arch, and I went up and spent some time at the arch and in the window/cave nearby. That whole formation is covered in small arches and interesting erosion, and the views were excellent.

Elephant Arch: [ youtube video ]
Window: [ youtube video ]

Once we got back down the slope, we stopped for a late lunch and then completed the loop on Hangover/Munds Wagon. When we were away from Schnebly Hill Road, we only saw a handful of people all day, and the weather was very comfortable. I usually try to avoid repeating hikes--especially one I've done so many times--but this one has some of the best views in Sedona and doesn't get old.

angela was looking for a prep hike for her summer travels
we did this hike seven years ago
had planned to do it while sue was here, before she broke her arm :o
got going around 0900 on munds wagon trail
a few hikers out and a few pink jeeps
went clockwise on the loop this time and soon arrived at our first saddle
wonderful views of wilson mountain, thunder mountain, chimney rock and more
we made an attempt to climb up to the arches but got kind of sketched out about a third of the way up
maybe not the best route or the fact that i haven't been climbing in three years
hangover is such a great trail, getting up under the overhang and the overhang itself
took a snack break at the second saddle and began our descent, eventually taking cow pies trail back to munds wagon trail
a lot of water in the drainage, still flowing over the bedrock in places
finished up and had beer and root beer at the trailhead
late lunch at a new place: colt grill, bbq & spirits
the brisket tacos were delicious
nice to be back in sedona
great hike, fun day - thanks, angela!

Kelly is helping me do some prep hikes for my big outing this summer.  We hadn't done this for 7 years and decided it would be a good one to do again.  We made the drive north and just like several years ago, we blew by the turn ](*,) for Sedona but realized it right away, unlike the last time when it was several miles before we realized it.  We finally made it to the TH and geared up.  It was a little warmer than I would have liked but we did get a breeze that picked up later in the day.

We headed out on Munds Wagon Trail and I was surprised that we saw as many people as we did until after we took the first junction for the Hangover Trail.  There were some nice wildflowers along the way including what I thought was Hollyhock but I now believe was Palmer's Penstemon.  The Penstemons were almost a grove in a couple places.  We were quite surprised to see some water in the drainages... and running water at that.  You cross the drainage many times during this hike before and after you come down from the Hangover.  We enjoyed checking out the water :)

Kelly suggested we do the loop clockwise as we had not done it this way.  I was a tad reluctant as we didn't know the elevation gain but we went for it.  This turned out to be the perfect choice; especially after coming down that relentless hill from Schnebly Road later.  The Hangover Trail in this area was in nice shape and you had good views along the way too.  We did run into a bicycle rider here.  It was interesting to see how the trail wrapped around the base of the mountain and takes you up fairly easily to the western saddle.  I had downloaded DixieFlyer's route just in case we wanted to take a shot at the arches/windows above us to the west. I told Kelly to go ahead and I'd wait but she suggested I come along so I mumbled something and followed her.

Well after several stabs at different routes to get up a steep layer of bedrock, we ended up turning back.  We did spot a bike rider across the way that pondered going straight down the opposite mountainside to the saddle.  I can't even imagine.  We never did see him complete the task.  Kelly figured we could probably get up this one section with good effort but getting back down might be a little dicey. I did get a few good pictures of her attempt.  In fact, getting back down to the saddle was slippery and we had to do a little rumpaging.

Once back at the saddle on flat bedrock we headed straight up a couple more levels to the designated trail (on bedrock) and enjoyed our hike to the north side as the views kept us in awe.  Oh ya, this next part... now I remember, it is incredibly vertical and a tad tricky in spots to get up once you have to veer away from something of a trail.  Thank goodness for the white marks that helped guide us up and back south.  I had my heavy day pack on so this was a tad challenging : rambo : .

We finally made it to the last level at the base of the top tier.  And now it was time to head east, hugging the side of the mountain.  The trail is dicey in sections too but nothing too bad.  It is amazing how they fit this trail in here.  The overhang sections are so impressive and today there were water seeps, moss and some plants growing right out of the walls. And oddly enough, I got hit by a rock coming off the hangover above me. I didn't see Kelly again until I got to the area where you cross below the saddle.  I did quite a bit of filming on my way and would occasionally stop to inhale the views.  I finally got to where I could see Kelly on the east side below the saddle. We had one quick steep section before we arrived at the top of the saddle.  For some reason, my mouth got really dry while hiking between the saddles; such an odd thing.

We found a nice restaurant, I mean some comfortable rocks :D , to sit on for lunch time.  We were only half-way done with the hike but at least it was downhill from here.  We headed west across the saddle and then down a layer heading east.  However, as Kelly was running point pretty far ahead she came back to say this wasn't the way.  So now we were on the hunt for the white marks which were pretty much on this west side as the trail headed down the layers to get to a bigger layer where all the big loose rocks were hanging out.  We pretty much stayed on this layer still enjoying the scenery and a lizard that looked turquoise in this light.  I dropped my phone for the second time today, UGH! There were a couple sharp ups and downs as we finally reached the Cow Pies Trail.  While the Cow Pies Trail is short, it packs a nice 360 view.

It was a little tricky finding the white marks to follow the trail across this huge area of bedrock, before making it into the trees and to the road.  We noticed how intensely green the trees seemed on the tall hillsides to our east; I think because they had just leafed out in some cases. We crossed the road and did a zig when we should have zagged to get on the Munds Wagon Trail for the last couple miles back to the trailhead.  The sun was warm so I was glad for the breeze and the occasional shade created by the pine trees as we made our way back to the creek.  The trail seems to be on a constant down so I was glad Kelly had made the choice to try it clockwise.  I had forgotten how relentless the trail would have been on the way up.

We made it to the creek where once again we found running water and some deep pools.  I asked Kelly for one more break before finishing off the last few miles.  We found a great setting including a nice big rock to sit on with a pool in front of us and the red rocks beyond.  Just past the junction with Hangover west, we were more in the grassy area and some more flora.  We still crossed the creek drainage and the road a few times before that last little hill where we found a beautiful smattering of blooming prickly pear cactus.  It was starting to get a bit warmer now so I was glad when we could see the trailhead in the not too far distance.

We enjoyed our beers and peanuts before heading south, but not before asking google for a place for lunch.  We lucked out and ate at the replacement of the Blue Moon.  We had great food and I had a stellar margarita.  The chairs are also very comfortable here at Colt Grill BBQ and Spirits.

I took quite a few movies and if you've done this Loop, you know why.  It's really a great hike.  Once again, I haven't finished reviewing the videos.

Hangover hike with the Harem! I usually drive up Schnebly Hill road to Cow Pies trailhead, but the road condition was so bad, that we about 2 miles past the end of the pavement and jumped on Munds there to do the loop. Nice not having to hike all the way back to Cow Pies at the end. Lots of hikers out this morning, no bikers on the trails. Sun was super hot by lunch time. Gas prices were $3.75 in Oak Creek, incredible!

Plan A (phantom ranch) was interrupted by the weather/arizona department of transportation's closure of I-17/I-40, so I picked this one for plan B. I had long wanted to do this hike, and thought it would be cool with some snow both on the ground and in the forecast.

Did the lollipop loop from Munds Wagon Trailhead. We went up Cow Pies to connect with Hangover. On Hangover we had the benefit of being the first people on the trail for the day, and got to walk on totally fresh snow. Icicles on the side of the trail were really cool. There was also a ~12 foot section of broken up ice slabs.

When we got back to the South side of the loop, we were hiking into pretty strong wind and snow. This section I would have had trouble following without a map.

Really good hike.

From Schnebly Hill Vista we headed out on Casner Canyon Trail #11 at 55°. This is among the most under-hiked trail with stunning views. 1,500 ft elevation drop does not lure out-n-back hikers and looping options are not easy.

Reaching Oak Creek, the majesty of this loop hits another high note. Damifino Trail heads up before the creek. It is blocked off because it is not an official trail. Damfino Canyon (minus the first i) is further south of Mitten Ridge.

Heading up starts rough. Then it is a nice stroll above Grasshopper Point. Two daisy-chained red rock ascents a bit later pushed my limits of balance. Then it's on to the prize Hangover Trail. Despite whining about overcrowding since I started HAZ, we encounter just one guy on the north, a couple rounding the mitten, and a few more down into Bear Wallow Canyon.

We merged into Munds Wagon Trail #78 and took Schnebly Hill Trail #158 up the rim. These two trails will rate low for most. Bruce had his heart set on lunch at the Munds - Jack Canyon saddle. There is not a great lunch spot so we returned a bit to a more seemingly comfortable spot under the pines. Souvenir bug bites surfaced a day later from sitting in the pine needles.

Random bird sample picked up: Bewick's Wren, a Western Wood-pewee, and Geen-tailed Tohwee. Never heard of any but they were all in the fauna label index.

Synopsis
Under 2 miles in, it felt like I was on pace to edge 1,000 photos. If you can fend off Carpal Tibber Syndrome and can negotiate steep scrambling on sandstone this is a dandy loop. Passed under two dozen hikers, more out-n-about in the distance. Two helicopter tours above, and four jeep tours along Schnebly.

It's been awhile since we've hiken in Sedona. The forecast was showing favorable temps, so I worked up a loop with some of my favorites. I'm also not a fan of fighting the afternoon traffice in Sedona, so we came in via Schnebly Hill Rd, off I-17. This is 6 miles of dirt to get to the Schnebly Hill Vista TH. Any vehicle can make it to this point. After that, HC with good tires are an absolute must. The parking lot is worse than any portion of the road to this point.

We started on Casner Canyon Trail #11 heading down. The views open up to the Sedona city area as you drop. Towards Oak Creek, you start seeing some interesting geology. The Oak Creek area is very picturesque.

On the Damifino Trail, it appears that they may have decommissioned the lower portion ending at Mitten Ridge. Where it meets Casner Canyon, it is no longer obvious. Once you get in a bit it becomes very obvious and is easy to follow all the way to the smooth red rock section. The important part here is to get high enough to hit the trail on the proper contour to get to Mitten Ridge.

The Hangover Trail is my favorite trail in Sedona. It never disappoints. I still thinks MTB'ers who do this trail have multiple screws loose.

On the Munds Wagon Trail we start the long climb, past the Cow Pies TH, past the Merry Go Round and up Schnebly Hill Trail #158. We climbed up to the saddle just before the steep ascent to Munds Mountain. We took a late lunch and then hit the FR's back to the TH.

A great day in Sedona

Parked along 89A and dropped off the highway ledge to Oak Creek. Waded through Oak Creek and then continued up to the north end of Damifino. Damifino had cut brush and limbs blocking the start of the trail. I assume the Forest Service might be trying to discourage its use. Not much sign of traffic on the route, but enough footprints that one can tell it still gets used. I moved up the ridge quickly but went too high up on the sandstone ledges, so I scrambled back down and soon found the route again. Climbed over more logs blocking the south end of Damifino at the saddle on Mitten Ridge. I then turned on to Hangover Trail and journeyed west. It had been years since my first hike on Hangover and it was just as amazing as I had remembered. Love those Hangover views and being among the red rock towers. I reluctantly turned around at the west end of the ridge as sunset approached, wishing I had time for a Hangover loop. Enjoyed a great sunset on Damifino and made the Oak Creek crossing at dusk. Booked it back to Flagstaff afterward for pizza from Fratellis with the family.

Got in a hike at one of my favorite trails in Sedona.....Hangover trail. :y: I'd been talking it up with a friend of mine and finally got an opportunity to share the experience. Got up there around 7am. Surprised to find that Schnebly road was gated off at the TH. The sun hadn't risen yet, but there was enough predawn light to see by. Took Munds Wagon into Cow Pies. No serious problems. Stream was flowing lightly...easy to cross. Snow was still on the ground in places. Trail was fairly clear lower down though there was some compact snow and frozen ground that would turn into slush later in the day. As we crossed Schnebly road and got closer to Cow Pies trail the snow cover was greater. The trail was well blazed but snow was prominent both off and on the trail. The Cow Pies trail was fairly clear of snow. Easy to negotiate. Little worried about the slopes rocks on the southern side of the Hangover. Luckily, sun exposure had taken care of any potential ice hazards. Beautiful with the snow peppered slopes of Munds Mountain off to the south. :D Had the saddle to ourselves. Descending the Hangover on the north side was a little more challenging. Beautiful. But challenging. Packed snow was a common theme as we worked our way along the rock wall. I managed ok, but my friend seemed to have ice skates on as he tackled the ups and downs. Had a slight scare myself as we wrapped around the west side of the trail. Went down on one of the red rock slopes. As I tried to get off the ice I slid further down. There was no immediate danger of a precipitous slide, but I needed a helping hand from my friend to get dragged off the ice. Not sure how successfully I would have manged on my own. Encountered our first hikers shortly after that with a steady stream thereafter. Warned the first couple of hikers to watch their footing. Great to be able to share the beauty of Sedona!

This was my second time doing Queen Vic and it was nice to see how much I have improved in the nearly two years that has passed since I first climbed this spire. It took us less than an hour to reach the base and then we cruised up the three short pitches. We were very happy to be finishing our final rap when several climbing parties showed up. A little chilly in the shaded first pitch chimney, but otherwise perfect temps and conditions. Excellent summit views and a spectacular area to climb. I need to make a resolution to climb a few more Sedona towers this year.

We did this loop clockwise. A decent amount of mountain bikers out there for a Monday, but an enjoyable loop. I guess I wasn't sure what to expect, but far exceeded what I thought it was going to be.

In my opinion this is a top 3 hike. Love this loop. We were up,in Camp Verde visiting in-laws and I got a chance to squeeze this hike in. Started from the Huckaby TH. Got on the trail just after 6:30. Chilly weather. Low 40's at best. Cold enough to make me start out with a jacket and I hate wearing jackets :( . Jogged Munds and Cow Pie, but hiked Hangover. Trail and views are just too good to rush through. Sun didn't hit me until I was approaching the saddle. Weird in how quiet it was up until that point. No noise whatsoever, not even the chirping of birds. But as the sun started to warm the surroundings, songs slowly started to welcome the sun, though not as much as I would have expected. Pretty much had the loop to myself. Met 2 trail runners near the saddle, but didn't real see anyone else until I was heading back on Munds Wagon. Doesn't get much better than this. :D

i saw @DixieFlyer route for the munds wagon/merry go round/hangover route and though it looked great.

it certainly was

though the parking lot was relatively crowded i saw very few people all day and had perfect weather. climbing up merry go round is easy and the views are outstanding! took munds wagon up to its end, then poked around on schnebly hill road a bit taking in some viewpoints.

of course the highlight was cow pies/hangover which is kind of mindblowing at times. climbed up to the arch, which is a very worthwhile side trip indeed.

fantastic route, thanks for posting it! :app: :y:

The Munds Wagon-Cowpies-Hangover loop is one of my favorite Sedona hikes, and I figured that this would be a good time to go do this one again.

We added in a side-trip to Merry-Go-Round Rock, and to Elephant Arch and the other arches on the "Window". Merry-Go-Round Rock is an easy climb, although it is class 3 in a couple of places. Climbing up to the arches is a little more difficult, but isn't too bad. There are great views up there, along with some fun climbs depending on how adventurous you are.

It was a little warm, but we got an early start and it turned out to be a great day for a hike. I was a little concerned that there might be some smoke from the Horse Fire, but that turned out not to be an issue at all.
