This started out as an exercise hike up and back on the highly popular Tom's Thumb Trail. But I decided to make it more interesting by making a counterclockwise lollipop loop using the climber's trail past the Lost Wall to reach the top of the ridge west of the Thumb. I've taken this route twice in the past but that was eight years ago and always in the clockwise direction. If I'd planned on taking this route before leaving home I would have downloaded my gps track from the last of those treks just to make sure I didn't get lost in the maze of large boulders on the south side of the Thumb. But I figured the route finding would be obvious helped by my memory of those past hikes.

Once leaving the Tom's Thumb trail on the climber trail I didn't encounter another person until reaching the east side of the thumb. The climber's trail is easy going at the beginning as it crosses the small valley to reach the ridge. But it quickly becomes difficult and somewhat hazardous as it starts the steep climb up to the ridge top due to an abundance of slippery loose gravel. The frequent boulders blocking the trail forced me into a scramble on all fours and some high stepping that was hard on my ancient knees. But going up was definitely less hazardous than going down. Once reaching the ridge top there is a fairly well worn trail heading towards the Thumb. The astounding views both north and south, the solitude of this section of the route and the challenges climbing the steep section are the highlights of this hike.

The ridge line trail headed towards the south side of the first large granite formation in front of the Thumb but at a fork in the trail in the large boulder field my memory of the route failed me. In fact I wasn't sure whether my previous treks had gone on the south or north side of the Thumb. The upper fork soon faded as the users started walking/scrambling across the boulders. The lower fork could be seen for about 50 yds before disappearing in the boulders so I decided to take that route - Wrong! WARNING, don't use my track from this hike to find your way around the Thumb! I soon found myself lost in the maze with frequent backtracking as each attempt got blocked by a vertical wall of boulders and I was forced to attempt a route lower on the hillside. After many blocked attempts and struggling over boulders I finally reached the east side of the Thumb and started down the well maintained Tom's Thumb trail to return to the trailhead. However my progress was slowed by my now protesting left knee and I got to meet and greet the many other hikers passing me in both directions. Still, it was a much more enjoyable hike than just another up and back on the main trail.

I love the hog heaven/lost wall loop. 8 million people on the Tom's thumb trail, and we saw no one on the hog heaven trail. None. Glorious!! Saw quite a few people between the end of hog heaven on the tom thumb trail until the start of the lost wall trail. We saw a whopping 2 people on that trail (with two medium sized dogs - impressive! Not the trail I would recommend for dogs!). An excellent hike despite murky, cold, windy weather. I was missing my hat which I sadly misplaced somewhere.

I've been wanting to do Lost Wall for a long time and finally got around to it today. Dragged the team out for an cold and early start. Following the climbers route up was pretty straight forward. Double checked the GPS at a couple of spots to make sure we were on track. Took a side trip out to the lookout. Steady line of hikers coming up Tom's Thumb trail on our descent. Post hike treats at Eggstacy at Pima and Thompson Peak on the way home, fantastic!

Had a rare weekday off so I headed to Tom's Thumb Trailhead. I have hiked to Tom's Thumb many a time, but never from the North side. So that is what I did. 7:00 am parking lot not busy, I made my way up Tom's Thumb Trail a short distance until I reached the junction for the climber's trails. I continued West and made my way up the mountain; very scenic and quiet this way. Lots of cool rock formations and a cool ridgeline to walk on. You can see Tom's Thumb from a different perspective this way. I made a visit to the Ogre's Den (what's left of it) before visiting the Thumb. Finally, I visited The Lookout for a break and some views. Call me crazy, but I like The Lookout better than the Thumb. I finished the loop taking the regular trail back down. Much more crowded now. One day I will combine Lost Wall Loop and Hog Heaven to make the Ultimate Hog!

Lloyd joined me for Friday's hike in the McDowells. He told me up front that he's 70 years old with a pacemaker. However, he's been doing some serious hiking recently and was ready for a hard hike.

We did a big loop starting with part of the Lost Wall Loop. Once we got to Tom's Thumb Trail, we headed down and then down some more on the East End Trail. Part way down EE, another hiker named Danny joined us. When we got to Windmill, we turned left and then left again on Coachwhip. Now in MMRP, we turned left again on Pemberton and then again on Boulder, which brought us back to the Preserve. Danny headed back to the parking lot while Lloyd and I went on to do the loop on the Marcus Landslide Trail - Lloyd told me that it'd be too short of a hike if we headed straight back at that point. Once we finished the loop, we did head back. I offered to extend the hike to 12 miles which was what Lloyd was shooting for, but he admitted that he was starting to get tired as we made our way back.

We saw many other hikers on our way. While in MMRP, we saw a few mountain bikers too.

We saw lots of flowers, especially brittlebush and poppies.

The trails were all in good condition, though Danny felt that the East End Trail was a bit loose.

Last week, I tried taking the Climbers Access Route up East End Mountain to Tom’s Thumb. I had to bail when I encountered a section I did not feel comfortable boulder-hopping. This week, I returned to take the normal human route up Tom’s Thumb Trail to … Tom’s Thumb. Of course.

I arrived at the Tom’s Thumb Trailhead aboout 6:30 a.m. It was still dark out. I was hoping to get up to Ogre’s Den in time for sunrise, but the gate was closed. I ended up tweeting for 45 minutes until the gate was opened.

I found Tom’s Thumb Trail to be wide & immaculately groomed. Up to the saddle, a lot of erosion remediation had been done. I tried to maintain pace on the 700 ft. climb only ¾ of a mile, but I seemed to have lost my hiking edge over the last few months and had to stop several times for ‘photographs’ (i.e. breathers). 💔

The saddle has good views of McDowell Peak and antenna-topped Thompson Peak. I had been hiking in deep shadow until I reached the saddle, about an hour into my hike.

There is a faint use trail to Ogre's Den, but there are several scrambly bits, so I would not recommend a casual day hiker visit the cave. I was hoping Ogre’s Den would have all the cool stuff I had seen in older photos ( [ Ogre's Den ] ) , such as a cot, picnic table, sandbagged walls, water retention system, lanterns, etc. A neat camping spot. But the killjoy park rangers had removed it all. Bummer. 😕

On my way back from Ogre’s Den to the saddle, despite my fears of explosive 💩, I finally broke down and tried eating some orange wolfberries. They were juicy, and extremely tart. I made it back to the trailhead without filling my drawers. 👍

After taking a break at the bottom of Tom’s Thumb, I followed the Climbers Access Route, which heads from emergency marker CR41 around the west side of Tom’s Thumb. Close to the formation, it was brushy and a bit scrambly, but the Climbers Access Route mellowed out for the next ⅓ of a mile along the ridge.

From the tip of the ridge, the Climbers Access Route is a very steep & rocky 700 ft. descent in only a half mile. Even with several small one- or two-rock cairns, the route is not always obvious. I'm glad I had the route on my GPS.

Once at the bottom, I booked back to the TT3 intersection on Tom's Thumb Trail, thence back to the trailhead.

Loved it. Did it counter clockwise like suggested. I can see how that makes it easier. Weather was good and views were great. Definitely will be back soon!

Laura joined me for a Friday morning (into afternoon) hike in the McDowells.

Starting from Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we started on Tom's Thumb Trail and then took the first climber's access trail to the right. This took us to the ridge on which the Thumb is situated and took us past this prominence. (This is part of the Lost Wall Loop.) When we reached Tom's Thumb Trail again, we turned left and then right onto the East End Trail where we descended until the end of the trail intersecting the Windmill Trail. We continued left on Windmill, then left on Coachwhip, left on Pemberton, left on Boulder, and right on Marcus Landslide. When we got to the intersection with Feldspar, I bid goodbye to Laura and continued on Feldspar and then back on Tom's Thumb. (Tacking on Feldspar at the end of this loop adds perhaps an extra mile of distance.)

When I had last hiked the climber's access trail for the Lost Wall Loop, I got lost midway along. That didn't happen today - I figured out where I went wrong last time and did not repeat that mistake.

The trails were all somewhat damp after last night's rain, but that seemed to improve things somewhat - they didn't feel quite as loose as they normally do.

I saw some evidence of recent erosion on a few trails - in one spot on Tom's Thumb Trail, I saw some exposed wire mesh used to reinforce the trail. East End was somewhat loose and eroded, but I sort of like it that way. It didn't seem much worse (or better) than the last time I did it.

We saw some poppies, brittlebush, and chuparosa along the way. I think I got a photo of a bee on some brittlebush.

Nice loop. We arrived to an empty trailhead which surprised me a little, maybe due to the damp conditions. Started and ended the loop on the Climber Routes which we both really enjoyed. Would definitely do this loop again.

Linda and Kathy joined me for Friday's hike. Starting from Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we started off on the Lost Wall Loop, but extended the loop by turning left (instead of right which goes directly back to the TH). This took us to the Scottsdale side of the McDowells. We then turned onto Windgate, went over the pass and down to Windmill. A short hike on Windmill delivered us to East End Trail, where we (slowly) made our way back up again. On the way back down Tom's Thumb Trail, we hit most of the overlooks along the way since this was Kathy's first time hiking this area.

Linda, who is a Preserve Steward, brought her saw along and pruned a downed tree which was projecting a branch out into the Trail on the Scottsdale side. (I moved the branch that she cut off. Kathy did one too.)

We met up with Anika again, though she was hiking this time. (Anika is a phenomenal trail runner. I don't actually know the correct spelling of her name; I'm just guessing.)

We saw a bunch of other hikers too when we hit Tom's Thumb Trail on the way back. Up to that point, we hadn't seen that many people during the day.

Edit/update:

One thing I forgot to mention is the condition of the trails...

The climber's access trail leading to the ridge NNW of Tom's Thumb is quite eroded in spots. Despite a fairly good familiarity with this trail, I lost my way twice. It sort of felt like doing it back when it was new when it was difficult to follow.

Tom's Thumb Trail on the Scottsdale side seemed rockier than I remember. I don't do this section often, however, maybe once or twice per year. I don't have a clear recollection of its condition when I last did it in July. Tom's Thumb Trail on east side is also eroded in spots, but descending it didn't feel any harder than normal. In fact, it may have been easier than normal due to the water scouring off the loose stuff that's normally slippery underfoot.

East End is somewhat eroded, but then it always is. I thought it was fine.

Windgate Pass Trail and Windmill Trail were both in pretty good shape.

For my Friday morning hike, I did a combo of the Hog Heaven Loop plus the Lost Wall Loop. Towards the end, I added in Feldspar and returned on Marcus Landslide to extend the distance somewhat.

Monsoon rains have left yellow grass over much of the terrain. Despite being familiar with this route, I had to pause and look ahead for cairns several times in order to figure out where to go next. I also encountered some erosion at various points along the way, particularly on my descent of the Lost Wall Loop which made things a bit more interesting.

I saw a few hikers and even mountain bikers while I was on Tom's Thumb Trail. I didn't see anyone on the climber's access trails for either the Hog Heaven or Lost Wall sections.

I like the climber's access trail that forms the interesting part of the Lost Wall Loop. It allows us to turn lasso hikes utilizing Tom's Thumb Trail into (more of) a loop hike. That's what I did (again) today...

For today's hike, I started off on the Lost Wall Loop. When I hit Tom's Thumb Trail (after passing Tom's Thumb, the pinnacle), I turned right (west) which took me to the Scottsdale side of things. I returned via Windgate, Windmill, East End, and Tom's Thumb Trail. When I got near the bottom, I added on an extra mile by doing Feldspar, Marcus Landslide, and Caballo.

I got an early start, so was able to hike in the shade when I got to the west side of the mountain. Hiking up East End was hard - it's steep and the breeze was mostly at my back, so I didn't feel it much. Thankfully, the higher I got, the breezier it got, so it did eventually make a difference.

I saw a bunch of other hikers and even one mountain biker who was somehow managing to ride his bike up Tom's Thumb Trail (from the Scottsdale side). I didn't see as many people as I was expecting though.

Linda and I hiked an extended version of the Lost Wall Loop.

Starting from Tom's Thumb TH, we hiked Tom's Thumb to the first climber's access trail to the right, starting the Lost Wall Loop. We hiked this trail up to the ridge and then past Tom's Thumb which eventually took us back to the Tom's Thumb Trail.

Instead of returning to the parking lot via Tom's Thumb Trail, we instead went down East End, left on Windmill, left on Coachwhip, left on Pemberton, left on Boulder, and right on Marcus Landslide.

We saw Anika, a very fit trail runner who I've encountered several times in the past, as she was coming up the East End Trail. We chatted for a few minutes. She had a 22 mile run planned for the day! I'm amazed that she can do it with just a single water bottle tucked into the waistband of her running shorts.

As usual, trail conditions in this area are very good, though of course everything is really dry. The dry conditions caused both of us to slip a few times as we descended the East End Trail.

This is a cool little hike in the McDowells, and it is more difficult than the distance and AEG would suggest. There is one ascent where you go up past Hog Heaven to the Thumbnail that goes up 750 feet in 1/2 mile -- this section will remind you a little bit of going up Flatiron.

We started at the Tom's Thumb TH and went up Mesquite Canyon on a hiker access route. I noticed from a triplog that KBKB had climbed up the Sven Tower I climber crag, so we did that, and I am glad that we did. There are some cool views of Marcus Landslide from that vantage point. After that we followed the Hog Heaven Loop up to the Thumbnail, and from there went across the ridgeline to East End. If you go hiking in the McDowell's, why not go to the high point in the range! From there we made a descent (first to the north, and then to the west) down to the Tom's Thumb Trail. From there we picked up the Lost Wall Loop and made our way over to Tom's Thumb, and continued the loop west of Tom's Thumb and eventually made our way down to the Tom's Thumb trail and back to the TH.

This is probably my favorite little hike in the McDowells!

For Friday's hike, Kay and I hiked a combination of the Hog Heaven Loop and the Lost Wall Loop.

We started off by hiking Marcus Landslide and then turned right onto Feldspar. Just off the trail and to the left are some low angle (third class) slabs which lead to the top of Sven Tower I. We summited there and then continued on the climber's access trail leading past Sven Towers II and III. This soon joined the standard route for the Hog Heaven Loop. We hiked past Hog Heaven and the Thumbnail Pinnacle and the continued onto the East End (summit) where we also went to that summit.

Continuing on, we descended the climber's access trail to Tom's Thumb Trail. From there, we hiked over to (and then on) the oft used climber's access trail going to Tom's Thumb. We continued past Tom's Thumb and then down past Lost Wall, Half & Half Wall and the Fort McDowell climbing areas. This eventually led us back to Tom's Thumb Trail and then back to the parking lot.

The route is only about five miles, but it's (IMO) some quality hiking. I think this is my favorite route in the area.

I led a group of seven on a hike starting from the Tom's Thumb Trailhead on Friday the 16th.

In addition to doing the Lost Wall Loop, we visited the Lookout and, after descending Tom's Thumb Trail, we turned off onto Feldspar. We hiked a short ways on Marcus Landslide and returned via the Caballo Trail.

The climber's access trail that forms part of the Lost Wall Loop was firmed up by the rain that we had several days earlier. This trail normally has some really loose sections, but this wasn't really a problem for our hike on Friday.

I don't hike the Lookout Trail very often, so we added it into the mix. After doing the ridge over to and past Tom's Thumb, the Lookout is kind of anticlimactic. It was cool to be able to look down at Windgate Pass though.

Sara, Linda, and I hike a little over five miles in the Tom's Thumb Area. Starting from Tom's Thumb Trailhead, we hiked Tom's Thumb Trail to the first climber's access trail on the right. We hiked this trail up to the ridge, past Tom's Thumb, and then back down to Tom's Thumb Trail. We then made our way down the climber's access trail which leads past Gardener's Wall which eventually led us back to Tom's Thumb Trail again. We then turned right on Feldspar, and right on Marcus Landslide where we stopped to look at a mushroom rock that's near where the old parking lot was for climbing at Sven Slab. I then showed Sara and Linda the climbs on the Hawk/Energizer Boulder. (We just looked; we didn't do them.) After that, we returned to the Marcus Landslide Trail, where we almost immediately turned left on the Caballo Trail which we took back to the parking area.

We saw a tarantula as we descended Tom's Thumb Trail. We saw five deer, one with a tracking collar, on the Caballo Trail.

Heather and I hiked a ten mile loop starting from Tom's Thumb Trailhead. Starting on Tom's Thumb Trail, we took the first climber's access trail to the right. This trail led us to the ridge upon which Tom's Thumb is situated. We continued past Tom's Thumb to Tom's Thumb Trail, turned left and descended (mostly) to the intersection with the East End Trail. We took East End down to Windmill, the returned via Coachwhip, Pemberton, Boulder, and Marcus Landslide.

The climber's access trail which we hiked early on (which forms a significant part of the so called "Lost Wall Loop") is steep and loose in spots, but I found it much easier to follow than in the past where I would often get lost for a while by inadvertently following a wrong path. Either I'm getting better at it or some work has been done on this trail to make it somewhat easier to follow. That said, you still need to look carefully.

On my past two times out on this climber's access trail that goes near the Lost Wall, I went the other direction, descending the trail. It's definitely easier from a technical standpoint to go up rather than down. As mentioned above, the trail is very loose and it's easier to deal with the loose conditions when ascending.

We saw a tarantula midway up the climber's access trail. It was near a hole in the ground which was probably its home.

Later on, after we had gained the ridge, we saw a Sonoran Coral Snake. It was pencil thin and perhaps two feet in length. It wasn't interested in staying near us. I did get a few pictures, but they're not as good as I would have liked.

When we got to the intersection with the East End Trail, we spoke to a Preserve steward who clearly thought we were nuts to do the route that I had planned. He didn't try to talk us out of it, but he did ask Heather whether she had ever done this route before. (I told him that Heather had done longer and harder hikes with me in the past.)

A short while later, while we were hiking down the East End Trail, we encountered a very fit trail runner named Anika (not sure about the spelling). She had a 17 mile run planned for the day. What really surprised me was that she was able to accomplish it with just a small water bottle tucked into the waistband of her running shorts. I've seen her on at least two other occasions - she's very fit.

It started getting warm when we got to the Pemberton Trail in McDowell Mountain Regional Park. As we approached the Boulder Trail, I polished off the first (of two) 3L water reservoir that I had brought with me. I think I drank about 4L total for the day.

Heather hadn't hiked the Marcus Landslide Trail before, so we paused at a several shady spots along the way and looked at the rock formations. There are a number of interesting mushroom boulders along the way. Plus, the entire area is studded with boulders almost anywhere you look.
