Another section of the AZT Chris needed to scratch off his list. I was onboard, but probably didn't think out what I was getting myself into. We met at Wally's house at 430am and off we went.

This hike was a challenge. A couple of steep drops and climbs and a less than manicured trail. This part of Mount Lemmon is certainly beautiful. Despite what appeared to be smoke (dusty hazy) that limited the amazing views, the vistas from every side from the high points were very nice. Signs of past fires were evident all along the trail.

The first hike up towards Mt Bigelow wasn't too bad. Wally and I almost visited the watchtower on Mt Bigelow until we heard Chris yelling at us from the lower junction pointing towards the Butterfly Trail. That was a 2+ mile descent around Mt Bigelow to a pretty nice canyon below. The never-ending down turned into a little up and then some actual level hiking(sorta) at the turn around point at the junction of what I think was Crystal Springs (a continuation of AZT section 11).

My hip was already bothering me and hurting from the rough descent down from Mt Bigelow. We had a little lunch and started back towards the trailhead. About a 1/2 mile in on a downward area in the little canyon, a steep step caused something in my hip to "pop". It's never good to hear those kinds of sounds coming from your joints. The usual soreness was replaced with a very sharp acute pain. After that, I was at turtle speed. Going up didn't hurt as bad, but any kind of step down was painful. It took me forever to climb back out this one. I decided to let Chris and Wally know that I will make it up to the Bigelow junction and would meet them at the Incinerator Ridge Road camping area we passed on the way up. But, between intermittent cell coverage and another miscalculation, I had to hike down to the area to told them to meet me. Adding even more suffering...ugh.

The hip injury aside, this was a nice trail. Challenging and rough, but a good hike under different health conditions.

My ortho doctor told me 2 months ago my left hip was basically bone on bone. I got a cortisone shot and was told to "take it easy" on the harder hikes. Of course, since then, I have done the exact opposite. It appears I may have done something else to it now, hastening my inevitable hip replacement. Anyone on HAZ been through this procedure? I am a little depressed about the thought of not being able to hike the crazy trails I love anymore.

Another AZT section. I didn't pay much attention to the AEG and thought it was more of a ridge hike. It started as a ridge hike and then it went down, down, down.

I started out following Andy and taking it easy. We missed turn near Bigelow Mountain and Chris took the lead going down. We paused at an up segment I took off to the turnaround point.

We stopped to eat near Crystal Springs and the clouds came with a breeze so it was cool for a while. I took the lead on the way back and the up section wasn't as bad as I thought. Once I reached the saddle I decided to hike up to the towers on Bigelow Mountain and add some more AEG.

After coming down from the summit I wasn't sure if I was still ahead or behind so I just continued on. There were several hikers/campers out on Incinerator Ridge. The final leg from parking area to parking area I still stayed on the trail. I passed the one turn but only for 100 yards.

I got back to the lot and waited a few minutes before Chris returned. The search for Andy commenced shortly after and we finally got to him off Incinerator Ridge road. One and done.

This hike was a continuation of dayhiking AZT Passage 11E, Pusch Ridge Wilderness bypass. It was an out and back on the Incinerator Ridge and Butterfly Trails starting from the Upper Green Mountain TH.

Wally, Andy, and I got started from the Upper Green Mountain TH just after 7am. After a half mile of hiking and gaining a few hundred feet, you end up walking past the next parking lot which is barely a quarter mile up the road. I checked my old GPS tracks later and I had already hiked this portion of the trail, so we could have started at the next lot and saved some time.

Incinerator Ridge Trail has a steep climb, then levels out a bit. It seemed cool at first in the shade, but as soon as we were walking uphill in the sun, it got warm very fast. The elevation is around 8000', so the uphills were even harder at our advanced ages. As we got to the junction with the Butterfly Trail, a group of bikers was coming the other way. They passed Wally and Andy right at the junction, so the missed it and started heading up to Mount Bigelow and it's towers. As I got to the junction, I checked my GPS and saw they were heading the wrong way. I yelled three times and they still kept walking up. Finally I had to scream at the top of my lungs, at which point they both turned around wondering what my problem was.

From the junction with the Butterfly Trail at the saddle, it immediately heads downhill. The trail at first is very smooth, but then gets narrow, rocky, and even a bit overgrown. I think some AZT maintenance was just recently done on this passage, so the smooth part at the beginning looks like it might have been that.

The trail keeps going down at a steep clip. It passes the junction with Davis Spring Trail, then goes downhill some more before a brutal climb up a few hundred feet before leveling out a little bit before it ends at the next junction. I was ahead of Andy and Wally until the uphill portion, then Wally took over.
Andy showed up last and said that his hip was beginning to bother him. By the time we got to the end, it took 3.5 hours and we were pretty tired. We knew that hike back up to Mount Bigelow was going to be a slog.

On the way up we began to see more foot traffic on the trails. Two guys passed me and told me they saw Andy when I asked them and he seemed ok. Just below Mount Bigelow a couple was walking the other way and the guy told me they were looking for an old plane crash from the 60's, which he had the coordinates for. It was a lot of work getting back up to saddle getting all that elevation back, but I was getting used to the lighter air and was getting a bit of a 2nd wind.

The level part of Incinerator Ridge was nice, then the descent was a slog again. Steep and rocky with stiff legs isn't much fun. Once I got to the 2nd parking lot, I decided to just walk the road back to where we parked, which saved me 20 minutes easy.

Wally said Andy texted him saying his hip was really bad and he needed us to pick him up by Mount Bigelow, or something like that. there was some confusion as to where he was and wanted to meet. We ended up taking the wrong road and couldn't find him, and cell coverage was spotty. We finally went up the correct road and found him walking downhill on it, just as he had arrived. So it worked out as we would have been early and waiting for him anyway. Looks like he's going to need his hip checked out and reevaluate his hiking habits.

Long day on some rugged trails, but a day very well spent. Hoping the best for Andy's recovery and journey into elder care.

Drove up to Mount Lemmon to the Incinerator Ridge Trail and Hiked down to just a little past the San Pedro Vista. We turned around when our GPS's indicated 2 miles. Headed back the way we came to the Knagge Trail. Headed down the Knagge to the saddle about .7 miles in and turned around. Headed back up the Knagge and took the Kellogg Mountain Trail to the Butterfly Trail and returned to our start point. Started at about 0700 to overcast skies. We headed south along Incinerator Ridge, fairly easy walking for the first half mile then the trail starts it'd descent down to the San Pedro Overlook. Easy trail to follow but does have a lot of stair stepping as you descend.

On the return hike we took the Knagge Trail, I had tried this a few years back and didn't find any sign of it but this time we managed to find traces of it. Followed it down to the small saddle about .7 miles down where we lost it. It seems the trail switch backs down the south side of that saddle. Will have to do this again when we have more time to search out the trail, would at least like to get to the remains of the Knagge Cabin. Ate lunch at the saddle and returned the way we came. The GPS track on our return trip pretty much sticks to the trail. Red flags were placed along the trail and that helped us when we weren't sure about the route. The trail is covered with brush and dead fall that also helped obscure the trail.

Once back on the Incinerator Ridge Trail we took the Kellogg Mountain Trail to the Butterfly Trail and returned. No one on the trail all day with the exception of a couple camping we saw in the early morning along the ridge. Cloud cover for most of the day kept things pleasant. No water anywhere along the trail but then there were no stream crossings on this hike.

Originally planned a big group hiking from Mt. Lemmon to Sabino Canyon, but most of those wanting to do it canceled, so I chose this instead. I had Green Mountain on my bucket list for a while as one of Warren's 100 Classic Arizona Hikes, and honestly you can do a full Lemmon to the bottom hike through the trail system that is fairly close to Mt. Lemmon Highway (Aspen-Marshall Gulch-Sunset-Butterfly-Kellogg-Incinerator Ridge-Green-Bug Spring-Bug Spring Connector-Soldier, or instead of Soldier, -Sycamore Canyon-Bear Canyon to Sabino).

We decided to start at Bigelow Trailhead and took Bigelow to Kellogg, then Incinerator Ridge to Green to Bug Spring to Bug Spring Trailhead. We started out in the lower 50s and ended up around 90 degrees. On the way down we hit Leopold Point and the basically nonexistent trail up to Green Mountain Summit.

Loved the wildlife today. On the drive up Lemmon Highway I saw a gila monster on the side of the road. At the Bigelow Trailhead there were a couple of mule deer, and on the trail we ran into several bluejays, a couple of horned toads, a hummingbird (surprised to see that one buzzing around!) and several different kinds of squirrels, including one with long, furry ears.

One of our team had to pull off at the little parking turnoff across the road from Bear Canyon picnic area, but the other two of us made it to the bottom.

Hadn’t been backpacking in a while so decided to get back in shape with a partial load and a nice steep climb.

Wasn’t sure from my maps how to connect to incinerator ridge from upper green mountain so wound up going off trail; figured out the trail on the way back.

On the way up, passed a campsite on the ridge where somebody partially chopped down a live tree, probably with a hatchet. On the way back it had fallen. It was quite heartbreaking to see. Other campsites close to the trail had broken glass. Near Bigelow, someone had taken a dump in the middle of the trail. :x

It’s a great trail with some amazing views, but the overuse by people with less than stellar trail ethics is a bit much.

We decided to start out on the Green Mountain Trail, hop on the Incinerator Ridge Trail #18A, Then go onto the Green Mountain Peak.

Overall the trail was easy to follow, and it was an enjoyable hike.

Started at San Pedro Vista a little before 6 am and it already seemed warm to me. First time hiking along this route since the Bighorn Fire so I was interested to see how it fared. Better than I thought it might’ve. Some regrowth coming in on the silver oaks and locust. Lots of low-lying smoke in the eastern sky. Saw a couple of deer grazing among the ferns along Kellogg Trail. Walked up to the summit of Mount Bigelow and then continued on along Bear Wallow Road, one of my favorites in the area. Lots of car campers barely stirring along the road. Went down the Bear Wallow drainage route a bit and noticed an old logging road I’d never seen before. Followed that to its end at the observatory, then returned via the same route. Downright toasty coming down Barnum Rock. Dry shirt and cold water at my truck, then an undesired drive down to the furnace flatlands and home.

Biked down the highway from the top then hiked NOBO from the Gordon H campground. Excellent climb on quality trails that's just as rugged, scenic and enjoyable as the regular passage. Great views throughout and very green at the higher elevations.

We hiked from the Sunset trail head to the San Pedro Vista parking area, a distance of just under 6 miles, with a bit over 1,000' AEG and a lot more than that descent! This is a lovely hike, mostly shaded down several ridges with great views in all directions.

From the Sunset trail head, we took what the OpenCycle map calls Sunset trail, but seems to be better known as Bear Wallow trail. This trail doesn't seem to be on HikeArizona. It parallels the Catalina Highway for a short distance, then crosses under it through a large culvert and then crosses Bear Wallow road and climbs up to Mt Bigelow Rd. Follow this over to the radio towers, then pick up either Kellog trail down by Butterfly trail, or continue on the road around the masts and pick up Bigelow trail. Either way you end up at the junction of Kellog and Butterfly trails. I have made a great loop out of Butterfly trail with Bear Wallow trail, highly recommended.

Just down Butterfly from this junction there's a faint trail that winds up to Kellog Peak, well worth doing! Great 360 views from here. The trail continues down the other side and leads to another lookout. We made the mistake of bushwhacking down to Kellog trail from there, which I really don't recommend. It's a short distance but very steep and loose with heavy manzanita bushes.

We continued on Kellog trail to the top of Incinerator Ridge Rd and picked up Incinerator Ridge trail. There are several NF camping spots there, all full as this is July 3rd! Here we found the AZ Trail markers for the equestrian bypass. Incinerator Ridge trail winds down to the San Pedro Vista overlook, and is a lovely trail with great vistas and mostly shaded. We took a short detour up Leopold Point, again well worth it for the views east to the Pinalenos and Galieros, including Mt Graham. You can also see the Santa Ritas from here.

One thing to note is that even though it's cool up on Mt Lemmon (low 70s for us), the sun really beats down and it seems much hotter - hat and plenty of water obligatory.

Finally had some time and clear schedule to get Sierra up to camp a night on Mt Lemmon. Chose Leopold Point and Barnum Rock as our first hike, to show her some sweet high country views. really beautiful day up there and she loved these peaks.

we also walked the climbers route out to the base of the barnum rock wall and saw some climbers

I did a little hike with my sister and niece on Lemmon today. They both loved the drive up and it was a successful first hike for my six year old niece. The dogs could not have been much happier as well. A little snow lingering in the shade, perfect hiking conditions and good bonding with the family.

took AZT bypass to incinerator ridge, then kellogg mountain and bigelow trails to the bigelow FSR. ran that down to the observatory then down and around the white tail campground. came back and banged out some peaks: unnamed 8400 tower peak, mount bigelow, leopold point (took a stupid way down :? ) and barnum rock!

this is a very fun route. nice and cool up there early then fairly mild all things considered. was done before noon.

We visited Barnum Rock, Ridgeline (climbing area), Leopold Point, Palisades Rock, and Bear Wallow. Next time we do this it will be as a car shuttle. The attempt at a loop was something not worth repeating.

Put a campfire out by asking other campers for extra water. I'm assuming the forest service probably goes up on Incinerator Ridge and Bigelow to put out campfires on Sunday afternoon. I think people don't realize that no flames does mean the fire won't start back up. These idiots had piled all their left over wood on top of their hot coals as they left. They also left their fly to their tent. It was nice to meet a Good Samaritan on there will to help us put the fire out! He said he'd take the fly, too.

Found some tasty raspberries.

Some trail, some off-trail and roadside today. Mostly an excuse to get up to elevation cool off, and get some exercise.
When we were on Incinerator Ridge we were very disturbed to find a still very, very hot fire in an vacant campsite (good job Mike).
Belinda went over to the neighboring campsite to see if there was water to help quench the fire, they didn't have enough to take care of their own fire. What is it with people?? She did find a guy that had plenty of water to help.
