The purpose of this hike was to finish off AZT 11E, 11 and 12 all in one go. We started from the Butterfly Trailhead and took the Butterfly Trail to the Crystal Springs Trail, which is where 11E is. At Crystal Springs we turned left and took that to the end at Old Mt. Lemmon Road, which is also part of 11E. We then hiked this up to the top of Oracle Ridge and then took the road down thru Summerhaven to Marshall Gulch. At some point, AZT12 is in this section and switches over to AZT11, it seems to depend on what map you're looking at.

My original plan was to just do a loop, but then I had noticed that there was a 1-2 mile section of the Wilderness of Rocks Trail (part of AZT11) that I never did. So in addition to an 11 mile loop, we had to hike out 3 miles from Marshall Gulch and then back just so I could finish off a 1.5 mile segment off AZT11. Either that or make another separate trip for that, which I did not feel like doing. This made the hike for today a little more challenging, but these days an 11 mile loop seems too easy. I think the hike we did last Saturday in the Mazzies helped me out a bit with the elevation, as it was almost as high as we were this day.

Marshall Gulch Trail was the busiest in terms of foot traffic the entire day (I'm not counting the roads). The final ascent on the Sunset Trail back to the Butterfly Trailhead was a bit of a slog, but the views are amazing. Finding the beginning of the Sunset Trail was also a kind of a challenge as you go thru the wash there, but we made it.

Glad to get these segments all done and finally move on to a different area of the AZT. Weather was cloudy at first, then the sun came out as we ascended the road to Oracle Ridge and stayed out the rest of the day. Still had mostly cooler weather compared to Phx and has several nice breezes.

Another segment of the AZT done. It was nice to get away from the heat. The morning started out nice with cloud cover. There was sunshine on the trail about 9:30am and it started to warm up but the occasional breeze and shade kept it moderate.

During the first part of the hike the trail was empty excepted for two bikers riding through. There were vehicles on the road sections and Marshall Gulch had many hikers on the trail. The forest service personnel were handing out tickets for vehicles with out the required pass. ](*,)

At about mile 11 I started losing steam. I pushed through and got some energy back. May have been the elevation. The views along the way are nice. Lots of squirrels out and one that thought he owned the road. Once the truck stopped there was no reason to move.

My 1st time in Summer Haven. Small with lots of people. Close enough if you live in Tucson I guess.

It was good to see more trails on Mt Lemmon.

This hike was a continuation of dayhiking AZT Passage 11E, Pusch Ridge Wilderness bypass. It was an out and back on the Incinerator Ridge and Butterfly Trails starting from the Upper Green Mountain TH.

Wally, Andy, and I got started from the Upper Green Mountain TH just after 7am. After a half mile of hiking and gaining a few hundred feet, you end up walking past the next parking lot which is barely a quarter mile up the road. I checked my old GPS tracks later and I had already hiked this portion of the trail, so we could have started at the next lot and saved some time.

Incinerator Ridge Trail has a steep climb, then levels out a bit. It seemed cool at first in the shade, but as soon as we were walking uphill in the sun, it got warm very fast. The elevation is around 8000', so the uphills were even harder at our advanced ages. As we got to the junction with the Butterfly Trail, a group of bikers was coming the other way. They passed Wally and Andy right at the junction, so the missed it and started heading up to Mount Bigelow and it's towers. As I got to the junction, I checked my GPS and saw they were heading the wrong way. I yelled three times and they still kept walking up. Finally I had to scream at the top of my lungs, at which point they both turned around wondering what my problem was.

From the junction with the Butterfly Trail at the saddle, it immediately heads downhill. The trail at first is very smooth, but then gets narrow, rocky, and even a bit overgrown. I think some AZT maintenance was just recently done on this passage, so the smooth part at the beginning looks like it might have been that.

The trail keeps going down at a steep clip. It passes the junction with Davis Spring Trail, then goes downhill some more before a brutal climb up a few hundred feet before leveling out a little bit before it ends at the next junction. I was ahead of Andy and Wally until the uphill portion, then Wally took over.
Andy showed up last and said that his hip was beginning to bother him. By the time we got to the end, it took 3.5 hours and we were pretty tired. We knew that hike back up to Mount Bigelow was going to be a slog.

On the way up we began to see more foot traffic on the trails. Two guys passed me and told me they saw Andy when I asked them and he seemed ok. Just below Mount Bigelow a couple was walking the other way and the guy told me they were looking for an old plane crash from the 60's, which he had the coordinates for. It was a lot of work getting back up to saddle getting all that elevation back, but I was getting used to the lighter air and was getting a bit of a 2nd wind.

The level part of Incinerator Ridge was nice, then the descent was a slog again. Steep and rocky with stiff legs isn't much fun. Once I got to the 2nd parking lot, I decided to just walk the road back to where we parked, which saved me 20 minutes easy.

Wally said Andy texted him saying his hip was really bad and he needed us to pick him up by Mount Bigelow, or something like that. there was some confusion as to where he was and wanted to meet. We ended up taking the wrong road and couldn't find him, and cell coverage was spotty. We finally went up the correct road and found him walking downhill on it, just as he had arrived. So it worked out as we would have been early and waiting for him anyway. Looks like he's going to need his hip checked out and reevaluate his hiking habits.

Long day on some rugged trails, but a day very well spent. Hoping the best for Andy's recovery and journey into elder care.

Another AZT section. I didn't pay much attention to the AEG and thought it was more of a ridge hike. It started as a ridge hike and then it went down, down, down.

I started out following Andy and taking it easy. We missed turn near Bigelow Mountain and Chris took the lead going down. We paused at an up segment I took off to the turnaround point.

We stopped to eat near Crystal Springs and the clouds came with a breeze so it was cool for a while. I took the lead on the way back and the up section wasn't as bad as I thought. Once I reached the saddle I decided to hike up to the towers on Bigelow Mountain and add some more AEG.

After coming down from the summit I wasn't sure if I was still ahead or behind so I just continued on. There were several hikers/campers out on Incinerator Ridge. The final leg from parking area to parking area I still stayed on the trail. I passed the one turn but only for 100 yards.

I got back to the lot and waited a few minutes before Chris returned. The search for Andy commenced shortly after and we finally got to him off Incinerator Ridge road. One and done.

It was my birthday so wifey and I went for a hike.

Lots of slushy snow and mud on the first mile, so it made things a bit extra.

After the campsite at the saddle below Butterfly Peak it cleared up and the trail was in pretty good shape. Running water in one of the drainages before Novio Falls, too.

The falls were running. I collected water in the stream below the plane since I didn’t think I brought enough, but didn’t filter it.

Didn’t see a soul past the first mile, but passed several others above the saddle on the way out.

Started from butterfly TH at 11am. We got the last spot in the lot.

Beautiful views on the trail. Trail in very nice shape until about a mile and a half in. The trail is there, just very brushy with lots of encroaching vegetation. Lots of lush greenness.

No water at Novio Spring as it was marked on the map, but about 50 feet from where the spring was marked to originate, there was a small pool along with some gentle gurgling of running water in the wash.

We lunched on a log in dry wash. We didn't see a visible path to the plane wreckage.

We headed back the way we came. The weather was perfect. 😊

We passed the Crystal Springs trail junction. We didn't check it out, but it looked slightly more brushy than the well-defined butterfly trail.

Would have liked to do this as a shuttle hike, but alas, no second car!

Up to Mount Lemmon again because it is too hot in the valley. We hiked the Butterfly Trail and returned via Mount Bigelow. Started at 0630 at the Palisades Ranger Station Trail head. The first 1.5 miles of the trail were in good condition and had some maintenance done recently. The next mile to Novio Creek/Spring was really overgrown. The trail was still easy to follow though. Once near Novio Spring the trail has been cleared of brush. At Novio Creek Crossing (had a really light flow) we headed upstream to theF-86 crash site. The engine is starting to show it's age or people are starting to pick at it. Headed on our way to the west end of the butterfly trail along the Catalina Highway. Parts of this trail were maintained and other section overgrown but still easy to follow. This was a hot section of the hike as the east facing slopes are in direct sunlight.

Once at Catalina Highway we took a lunch break then headed along the highway to the Bear Wallow dirt road and headed up to Bigelow. Easy walking along the road to Bigelow. Lots of campers along this section. The weather was overcast with rain to the east over the San Pedro Valley. Really cooled it off for us though.

Along the Butterfly Trail are two trail junctions, one the Crystal Spring Trail that I have been on a few years back but the other is the Davis Spring Trail. Has anyone been on that trail and is it still there. Also curious about the Knagge Creek Trail.

Headed to Mt. Lemmon to get away from the Phoenix heat. We started at the Sunset trailhead and headed southeast along the trail there. The trail doesn't appear to be named, but is very wide, well-maintained, and popular with mountain bikers. It runs parallel to Mt. Lemmon Highway, passes under the road through a large culvert, then continues up a gradual ascent (500 feet AEG over 1 mile), eventually ending at Mt. Bigelow Road. We dodged a few mountain bikers along the way as they flew down the hill. We headed along Mt. Bigelow Road to the radio towers at the peak, then cut over to Butterfly Trail.

Butterfly Trail lived up to its name during the first 2 miles, with billions of butterflies flitting around. There were a lot of burned trees scattered around, but the trail was overgrown with abundant green plants as well, consisting of ferns and thorny plants that were up to 6 feet high and covered the trail at times. The thorns were completely avoidable with a little juking and spinning, which slowed us down a bit. The temp was 78°, but the high humidity made us sweat a little as we pushed through the vegetation. It felt like a jungle at times. There were some beautiful views along the way of the surrounding mountains and valleys. Novio spring was just a trickle, but was nice and peaceful down there. We forgot to look for the plane crash.

Heading up out of the valley was fairly steep at first, but this part was easier because we didn't have to push through all the vegetation and dodge all the thorns. Eventually the incline decreased a little, but there were a few overgrown areas. It was a pretty steady ascent from there back to Mt. Lemmon Highway. It began raining as we headed up - rained twice, 5-10 minutes each time, light rain, felt nice. We skipped Butterfly Peak.

The most exciting part of the day was after we got back to Tucson and settled down at a sports bar to eat. The thunderstorms rolled in, the wind picked up, and trees started crashing down in the parking lot, crushing one vehicle. The power went out, so they couldn't make our orders. We headed out onto the road to try to outrun the storm, literally dodging falling (and fallen) trees in the street as we drove down River Road through Tucson. Once we got north of Marana, things settled down.

Overall a good day. The initial trail was pleasant but the mountain bikers kept us on our toes. We didn't see a single person on the Butterfly Trail, just a lot of butterflies (and birds, and squirrels). The Butterfly Trail is quite overgrown in some areas, with half ferns and half thorny plants, but we barely got a scratch. The burned area with the abundance of green plants is sad and vibrant at the same time. It was under 80° and was mostly shaded, but we definitely felt the humidity.

Wanted to do something up high, but felt like I had been up in rim country too much lately, so headed up Lemmon. Started down Butterfly; I was surprised to see a half dozen or more people in the first couple miles. Got to Novio Spring, can't remember whether Novio Spring proper had water, but there was plenty in the drainage where the plane wreckage is - which I stumbled on without actually knowing it was there. I forgot how cool Butterfly Trail is; wish I could've seen it pre-fire.

At Davis Springs, I decided to poke around the top a bit; ended up going about three quarters of a mile down. It was much easier to follow than I expected - the trail wasn't even on my gps map. I heard someone may be doing some work on it. I've been wanting to do the Knagge/Davis loop for awhile; I think as soon as it cools down, it'll be time. If that goes well, maybe a Knagge/Evans/Brush Corral loop is a possibility?

Anyways, DS to the top of Bigelow was a grind. I'm out of shape. But at least it was cool enough. Definitely walked much more of the stretch from Bigelow back to Butterfly TH than I would've wanted. I was surprised this was only 9.5 or so miles; it felt more like 15.

The creek below the plan wreckage is flowing. There's also a trickle in the drainage a mile or so to the west, almost to Crystal Spring jct.

Only had the morning available so I just hiked to the plane.

Got to the trailhead at about 7:15. There was a big group of hikers gathering, but I got on the trail ahead of them. Didn't see anyone until I got to the plane, and heard the hikers pass by about 20 minutes after I was in my hammock. I didn't see anyone on the way back, either, though there was another large group at the trailhead on my return.

Significant portions of the trail are pretty exposed and it was hot, even that early in the morning. There was a bit of thin cloud cover on the return trip, of which I was most grateful. It was humid, too, after the storms last night. I felt sluggish uphill, but that may have been because it had been over a month since I had done any real climbing.

The area around Novio Falls was shady, cool, gorgeous, and buggy. After the sweat dried on me the bugs left me alone, though, and I was able to enjoy a little hammock time and tunafish taco. I wish I had more time to hang out, it was very peaceful with water trickling down the drainage. Alas, a 1pm engagement back in town was on the schedule.

Lots of golden columbines in places along the trail, especially in the shadier drainages with more water in them. Plenty of raspberries, too, which were ripe for the snacking.

Today’s plan was to walk 2½ miles of Control Road #38, then all 3½ miles of Trail #17, finishing up with a 1⅓ mile climb past Trail #16 to Butterfly Trailhead.

Signs at the top of CR 38 warn that it is “not suitable for passenger cars”. I could have driven my SUV down to Trail #17, but I did not want my shuttle-driving wife to have to drive back up. So, instead I started at the Mount Lemmon Fire Department. It only added a few hundred yards.

CR 38 drops 1,000 ft. in 2¾ miles. Occasionally rocky, with lumpy boulders, it reminded me of FR 172 to Woodbury Trailhead. It had good views south to the antenna farm on Mount Bigelow, as well as northeast across the San Pedro River valley, towards the Galiuro Mountains. It had some decent shade. There was a good size jeep camping spot just under 1½ miles, and a small one, with rougher access, across from Trail #17 at just under 3 miles.

Trail #17 is easy to miss if you are not looking for it, as there is no pullout, just a small sign, which is the same color as the shrubbery.

The first mile of Trail #17 easy to follow through grass & brush. The Bighorn Fire burned quite hot in this area, and little shade remains, except what was provided by the clouds that were starting to roll in. I wasn’t concerned, as the forecast wasn’t expecting rain.

As Trail #17 rotates around the upper reaches of Alder Canyon, it crosses seven washes: Four were bone dry, one had a tiny pool, another had several small pools, and one had a trickle of clear water.

By the time Trail #17 reached the massive boulders above the Crystal Spring, the trail was overgrown with dense brush. Mostly ferns, some chest-high. Reportedly there is also poison ivy, but I must not be affected by it, as I never got itchy. Just sweaty. The vines with 1″ spikes were never painful or frustrating, like catclaw. The trail often became nearly invisible in the brush. I had to concentrate both to pick out the trail, and to avoid stumbling on unseen obstacles underfoot: rocks, branches and tree throw (the holes left by collapsed snags). I saw enough to count seven piles of bear poo. 💩

After 5⅔ miles, Trail #17 began climbing. Replacing the joy of brush was rain. At least it cooled the temperature. I endured a 30 minute soaking before finally donning my garbage bag “raincoat”. Thanx weather guys!

Within minutes, it stopped raining. Of course. I didn’t want to take my “raincoat” off, because I knew if I did, it would start raining again. So, I endured the sauna suit, as I slowly way my up the 600 ft. climb around Butterfly Peak. Halfway, I turned right on Trail #16. For the most part, there was less brush in the pines.

I breezed into the Butterfly Trailhead five hours after I started, and sat down at a picnic table with my wife to discuss our day’s, consume a sodium restoring V-8, and enjoy the remains of my breakfast burrito. Best part was, no cramps on the drive back into Tucson!

Hiked this route with Jim and Preston starting around 11:40 am. We included Butterfly peak since it was probably less than 1/4 mile out of our way. After hiking to Butterfly peak, we hiked down the Butterfly trail to Novio springs and took a break there. There was a lot of shade and some running water. I hiked less than 1/4 mile up a "blocked trail" to see part of a plane wreck, which I've seen a few times previously. Jim and Preston went ahead on the Butterfly trail. I caught up to them but then they sped up getting to the saddle East of Mt Bigelow about 5 minutes before me. After summitting Mt Bigelow, we took the road West for a while and then jumped onto an unmarked social trail. That trail took us to an unmarked road with some nice campsites. There were some huge pines in this area. We kept walking and the unmarked trail took us to the West. We eventually crossed under Mt Lemmon Highway and the trail followed the highway for a while. Eventually, we ended up at the Eastern end of the Sunset trail. We crossed the road and went back to where we parked at the Butterfly trail. This unmarked social trail was very nice and I heard there are plans to make it a known trail. My Strava crapped out and didn't capture the entire route, but I'd like to hike this route again sometime.

Good hike in pleasant terrain. After last weekend's excessive hike, a more moderate one was preferable. Excellent views on the ridges, and really for most of the hike. Also tagged Butterfly Peak.

There has been trail maintenance. Too bad forestry is a dirty word on the Coronado.

Jim, Mike, and I met at the Butterfly trailhead on a beautiful Saturday and started hiking late morning. This was my first time on Butterfly since the 2020 Bighorn Fire and I was interested to see what things looked like post-fire. We made our way down slope through tickets of very tall bracken ferns, old survivor trees, and dead post-Bullock Fire regrowth, taking our time to enjoy the scenery. Mike wanted to check out Butterfly Peak, so we did, where we stopped for lunch in the shade.

We weaved our way in and out of canyons towards Novio Spring, encountering another flowing side drainage along the way. Some areas of forest looked ok, others were heavily damaged from the Bighorn Fire. The poison ivy patches along the trail were just fine, of course, nothing touches that stuff.

We took a nice long hydration break in the lush, shady paradise that is Novio Spring, where we filtered refreshingly cold creek water for the sunny climb to Mount Bigelow. Mike went on a side hike to see the plane wreck, while Jim and I made our way further up the trail.

Bigelow’s north ridge, which we ascended after Novio Spring, was very heavily damaged, with much of the old tree cover gone. New aspens are coming up in some places. We more or less solo hiked until we regrouped on top of Mount Bigelow in the late afternoon.

Once on top, it was a pleasant stroll down Bear Wallow Road and then one of my favorite social trails to the floor of Bear Wallow creek. We cruised along the creek through massive trees and lush maple groves, crossing under the highway, to where the social trail ended at the Sunset Trailhead. A quick hop over the road and we were back to our starting point.

We then drove to one of the picnic areas nearby that had a grill, where we got our cooking fire going as the sun set. The temps grew quite chilly in the evening breeze. We watched the moon rise over Bigelow while enjoying our mesquite-smoked barbecue dinners. After dinner we headed for home down the dark and surprisingly busy highway. Great day! Thanks guys for organizing this one!

started at butterfly TH and went clockwise this time. a lot of the butterfly is wildly overgrown with flowers, ferns and weeds head high. given all the recent rain, i was absolutely drenched within 10 minutes. slow going as i had to constantly push the jungle out of my way. water running at all the little canyon crossings and creeks. totally beautiful morning and super fun trail. usually i run this, but you currently can't run more than about 10-20 feet on most of this LOL.

went up to bigelow, then jogged the rest of the way back to butterfly TH on the FSR.

Mark and I camped on Bigelow so one day I did the Butterfly loop. I hadn’t been on it since the fire. Seems like there isn’t a lot of shade left. Hopefully the locust and Aspen grow quickly!

Had a few hours on the mountain so hiked Bigelow to Butterfly and descended to the crash site, which is well documented elsewhere. Wanted to see Novio Falls but ran out of time. I asked a passing hiker who had come from the direction of the falls if the falls were running and they said, “What falls?” So it was just as well I didn’t push it.

Seemed like there was more graffiti on the plane wreckage which made me sad. The drainage where the crash site is located had cool flowing water.

I have not been on the Butterfly Trail on Mount Lemmon for a few years and thought we would try it post fire. This trail has changed quite a bit since the early 70’s, The thick old growth forest has given way to panoramic views to the east and north of Mount Lemmon. Still a scenic hike though. I always thought this was one of those leisurely hikes but once again I was reminded this trail has a lot of elevation gain, especially if you add the Mount the Bigelow Loop. Couple of turkeys spotted on the ridge just before entering Novio Canyon. We stopped off to see the F86 plane crash that occurred in 1957. Pretty much the same as it was when I visited a few years back.

The fire burned sections along this trail but not all. The vegetation is coming back nicely although the pine fir forest will take some time. Large aspen groves are coming in nicely. There was water in the spring and creek at the Plane crash and on down past Novio Spring and the falls. Lots of ferns coming in below Butterfly Peak. The trail is in excellent condition having had recent maintenance done on it. The road walk up to the towers on Bigelow was pleasant with some great views to the north down what I will call Novio Canyon. Great hiking weather although a bit windy on the ridges.
