I chose Skyline from a few hikes Kelly threw out as options. A bit of a drive but good to get out here annually. We followed a route, for the most part, we had done a few years ago.
Lots of miles and AEG to be had if you have the energy.
Temps were cool with a moderate breeze. Great hiking weather.
Lots of jets flying out of Luke today. Noisy but very cool to watch fly by.
Thanks, Kelly, for navigating and lunch. Like Denny you rock! :)

john and i decided to hit skyline this morning
got going around 0615
we did the reverse of a big loop we hiked in december 2022
hit the five main summits, plus another little one
breezy, a lot of dust in the air
saw a few people, more toward the end
good hike: mileage, aeg and linkage
i enjoyed certain things more this time, like skyline crest and the pyrite segment
the finish still drags a bit
na beers after and el norteno for lunch
good times, thanks john :)

For some reason we decided to drive to east LA to hike.
Got started at first light. Beautiful morning.
Quite a few folks out hiking for a sorta weekday (Friday).
Nice wildflowers in some limited areas. Probably quite a few in another week.
Coffee then lunch downtown after. Thanks Kelly! :)

early start driving out to skyline
john and i got going around 0630
we cut down the big loop we did last time, leaving out javelina and pyrite
went counterclockwise this time
still double digits, decent elevation gain and linkage
i think either direction, the last couple miles drag a bit
john brought coffee for after and then bought lunch downtown - thank you!
nice morning

Completed 3 of 4 peaks 1 year ago. Created a route to knock out the final one, plus 2 other trails that still needed to be checked off the HAZ list. Only spot in town to elude the rain today. Let's do it.

Checked out Watson overlook at the beginning. Javalina proved to be the most difficult peak of the 4. Registry at top. Next looped around, added an extra peak and then headed back toward parking lot.

Challenge check, not many people and also met a couple of cute Doodles along the route.

Morning hike with the wife. Any time I can Velva on a trail is a good hike. She doesn’t care to do much, so we kept it simple. Parked at the area right when you pass through the gates. There is enough parking for about 10 vehicles. We did the loop clockwise. We did the gravel road that takes you to the circular overlook as well as Watson’s Overlook. Pretty easy hike. Saw quite a few people out there, but didn’t encounter anyone. No wildlife. Windy! Noticed that there is a signed trail called “Watson Trail.” This is not really a trail, (yet). But there is a sign post indicating a trail that parallels Watson Rd. as it enters the park. We only noticed one sign post and that is at the first turn when you enter the park and we didn’t notice any type of use trail that paralleled the road. Might be something that is developed eventually.

Kelly wanted to put this hike on our list. It remained there just one day.
Lots of rain for 18 hours before the hike, and it rained most of the drive out, but conditions were excellent once we got underway. Cool with a moderate breeze. A few light sprinkles.
Clouds and fog enveloped the peaks. Petrichor permeating our senses. Barrel cactus beaming red. Route Scout announcing the distance to the Skyline shltter (thanks Bruce). What's not to like?
We hiked the main loop clockwise. Only saw a dozen other hikers.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i had this on our list, and it was a good choice for today given the recent rain
copied @the_eagle's track and mostly followed it
we especially enjoyed the waypoint for the skyline pumpkinter
got going around 0700, clockwise on the loop
hit all the peaks: pyrite, valley vista, crest, javelina and watson
took skyline crest instead of lost creek and hit another little high point off trail along the ridgeline
fun hike, good variety, mileage and aeg, trails in good shape
fog rolling over the ridgelines was cool to see
the bright red barrel cactus after rain look nice
didn't realize i had been on crest summit, and javelina once we got near the summit
it's been awhile
thanks, john! good times :)

I have wanted to check out this park for a while now and i finally got the chance. Followed the big outer loop from Linda, Joe and Denny's trip out here a few years ago. Hit 4 summits - all with very nice views and different feels.

I was impressed with this park. Lot of fun trails out there and nifty summits to keep you busy all day

This is a combination of 7 trips into Skyline Regional Park. From January 18 through April 26th. I used these trips to help get in better shape for Mount Hood this Spring.
My pack ranged from 36lbs to 45lbs. Average 4.22 Miles @ 830ft gain.

Thought we would do a loop in the Eastern section of the Skyline park. I expected the 2nd part of the hike to bump along the ridgeline before dropping in a wash to the car, but really, it just went up a couple of washes and followed some roads. Also, the track in the Lost Creek section seems a bit dated in one section where you should keep on the road leading up the canyon and you will reach the same saddle location.

Met Angela and Tom at the surprisingly mostly empty trailhead just before 0830. Headed east on Quartz Mine, making the side trip to Watson Overlook. Very breezy, with cool temps to start. Continuing east, we got on Tortuga Trail, then up to Javelina Summit, which is a nice little climb.

Once back down, we headed over to Skyline Crest Trail, which I think is one of the best in the park. Another side trip over to the Crest Summit, where we had a snack. Temps were warming up by then, but still breezy. We enjoyed the jets from Luke flying overhead. Continued north on Skyline Crest, then west on Lost Creek for a short distance, then Mountain Wash for a short distance.

Once at the junction with Turnbuckle, Angela opted to wait for me and Tom to head over to Valley Vista, which we did real quick, then headed back to the saddle to meet back up with Angela. Easy hike down Turnbuckle back to the parking lot.

Nice day, not many people out on the trails, and great conversation. Nice to see Angela again, and good to finally meet Tom.

Nice hiking some new trails , pleasant weather but with occasional breezes to remind its still winter. Easy to find the trailhead the restrooms and picnic areas all appear new , also a nice bridge well designed to blend in with the environment leading to the trails, it even sports an out in the open campground. Thanks to Linda for figuring a route for us to follow in this maze of choices. Just to track distance I started route scout after coming down from the breezy Watson overlook, it tracked steady all day without reloading which has been occurring after photos lately, though it didn’t talk to me. Just as well so I could listen and learn about local landmarks, needing permits for Glacier Park and not to touch red dyed diesel fuel . Agree with other reports that they keep these trails well groomed with little vegetation, slopes on each side are loaded with cholla however so don’t roll off the trail. My favorite view of the White Tanks today was from the Javelina Summit. Saw very few other hikers with most in early afternoon as we closed in on the trailhead. Only took a few photos as I’m counting on Angela to come through, noticed her taking a few :D On the way down Valley Vista trail I thought I spotted a mysterious direct tv size satellite disc on a rock outcropping , as I came closer realized it was Angela having deployed her umbrella  For some reason there were other oddly placed hill top cairns around. The sound of freedom occurred repeatedly as the park is in line with the Luke AFB flight paths providing some visual entertainment. Again thanks to Linda it was nice to cruise along without needing to focus on directions, if it was closer I’m sure I would revisit often. FYI peanut brittle beer better than anticipated!
