It had been a few years since I was out at Skyline RP, so I figured it was time. Started from the main parking lot and hiked west on the Turnbuckle Trail to Granite Falls Trail. Along Granite Falls somewhere I got off the trail an onto one of the service roads, but it doesn’t really look all that different from the trails in this park since they’re all so wide and possibly former mining roads.

Got back on Granite Falls and took the Pyrite Trail up to the Pyrite Summit, then headed down and onto Chuckwalla. Then I took Granite Fall again, but uphill to Valley Vista and hiked that to the summit there. It’s pretty windy along Valley Vista, enough that I needed to put my hood up just to keep my hat on my head. Early on along Valley Vista is what looked like a new trail, but it’s on older maps, so it’s probably another mining road. Looks like it just dead ends below, so if you walk it, you’ll like hike walk back up, which looks like pretty good climb.

After Valley Vista I took Lost Creek over to Quartz Mine and looped back to the parking lot on the Parking Lot Connector Trail. Saw almost no one on Pyrite or Chuckwalla, but from Lost Creek onward the traffic picked up. Mostly hikers, not many bikers. Weather was clear and sunny the entire time. Chilly to start but warmed up quickly. It’s a long drive out from Mesa, which is why I don’t get out here much. The drive out isn’t bad since there isn’t much traffic, but I-10 on the way back is touch and go with a lot of slow spots.

Started around 0815 and made a big loop around Skyline, hitting all four summits. Trails in mostly good shape, with a few rocky places. Cool and cloudy, light drizzle for almost the entire western half of the loop. Most of the hikers I saw were on the eastern half of the loop. Good workout.

We made another trip out West this week, to Skyline Regional Park. Arrived about 8 am, parking lot was partially full, and filling quickly. We started on the opposite side of the parking lot, heading out east on Quartz Mine Trail for about 1.5 miles. Then north on Skyline Crest Trail, which goes up and up and up. As we caught our breath at the junction for the Crest Summit trail, we debated skipping the summit, but as it's such a short way up (0.17 miles) we decided we should go for it. It wasn't too bad, and the views were worth it. We took a short break for a snack here, before continuing back to the Skyline Crest Trail. The trail continues up for a ways, then you reach the ridge and it levels out for a bit so you can take in the views all around. There is a short steep descent to the end of this trail as you reach the junction with the Lost Creek trail. We headed left here, and hiked a short ways to the Mountain Wash Trail, which provided a gentle stroll back to the parking lot. The hike itself was only 4.97, I added a few parking lot circles to at least reach 5 miles. :D

Brittlebush was in bloom, and a couple of tiny various flowers (I should've gotten pictures, but didn't)

Harem hike (just me and Carey) at Skyline this morning. Did the loop counter clockwise. Fair number of hikers on the trails this morning. Temps were great. Winds were gusty. Big trail erosion on Mountain Wash trail. Some trail erosion on Quartz Mine.

john and i decided to hit skyline this morning
got going around 0615
we did the reverse of a big loop we hiked in december 2022
hit the five main summits, plus another little one
breezy, a lot of dust in the air
saw a few people, more toward the end
good hike: mileage, aeg and linkage
i enjoyed certain things more this time, like skyline crest and the pyrite segment
the finish still drags a bit
na beers after and el norteno for lunch
good times, thanks john :)

I chose Skyline from a few hikes Kelly threw out as options. A bit of a drive but good to get out here annually. We followed a route, for the most part, we had done a few years ago.
Lots of miles and AEG to be had if you have the energy.
Temps were cool with a moderate breeze. Great hiking weather.
Lots of jets flying out of Luke today. Noisy but very cool to watch fly by.
Thanks, Kelly, for navigating and lunch. Like Denny you rock! :)

Mid morning hike at Skyline Park. Did a clockwise loop involving the Mountain Wash, Lost Creek and Quartz Trails. OK set of trails. The Quartz is a single track but the other two are more road like. Trails are a little busier at 10am compared to 5am. Encountered 12 hikers, a runner and a biker.

Early morning hike at Skyline. No hard plan, but ended up doing a loop involving the Quartz Mine Trail. Parked at the spaces right when you entered the park. Got on the trail just before 5am. I took the Parking Lot Connector to the Mountain Wash Trail and then jumped over to the Lost Creek to hook up with the Quartz Mine Trail. Jogged what I could and hiked the rest. I realized as I was approaching my car that I wasn’t going to get 5 miles, so I took Quartz up to the main parking lot and then took the Parking Lot Connector back to my car. Nice lasso, though I was hoping for a little more elevation. Encountered 9 hikers, all near the TH. No wildlife. Shocked to see there were already 13 cars in the main lot when I hiked past it at 5am.

Ran into a locked gate at White Tank Regional Park, turns out it doesn’t open at 5am until the end of this month. I bailed on my plans for Barry Goldwater Peak and headed over to Skyline, hitting the trail at 5:40am - no lamp necessary.

Decided to hit the main peaks in the area, Javelina, Crest, and Valley Vista in a counter-clockwise loop, starting just beyond the park gate. Last time I hiked Javelina, there were a ton of unsightly rock thrones built right on the trail - someone dismantled all of them that day and someone is happy to report they’re still gone.

It was quite warm around 8am - no shade to be found. I had the option to skip Valley Vista but had a hankering to gain over 2500ft for the day. It was worth it, even as I took the last sip of my reservoir a few minutes from the top. Thankfully I packed an extra liter, which got me back to the car. Last couple miles were dancing around my current physical threshold, especially in the unrelenting sunlight.

It’s been a couple of years since I last hiked in Skyline. But, unlike last time, I at least I managed to get a hike in, despite this week’s frustrations.

Almost left my GPS at home. Luckily, I realized it was missing as I was pulling out of my driveway.

I took the long, looping, route from Sunnyslope to Skyline: North on I-17, west & south on Loop 303, west & south on Sun Valley Parkway, then east on I-10 to Watson Rd. That way I could enjoy my McDonald’s breakfast — the Shamrock Shake machine was down — without constantly needing both hands on the wheel, like the hell that is I-10. 🚫☘️

First thing I noticed is that there is lots more traffic on Loop 303 between I-17 and Lake Pleasant Parkway. (The transition is still an offramp, not an interchange.) Also, Loop 303 has new interchanges at 43rd Ave. and 51st Ave., which didn’t even exist north of the Deem Hills before. (For the TSMC chip factory.) At the very least, I could see 43rd Ave. went through to Carefree Hwy. (Not sure about 51st Ave.)

Loop 303 south to Bell Rd. was its normal relatively sedate self. Heading west on Sun Valley Pkwy., the Dell Webb development on the south side of the road is now built out. After Sun Valley Pkwy. bends south, there is a large new development going in. The land prep looked almost done.

Got on I-10 heading east, and almost got sideswiped by guy passing on right, through the gore point, at 20 over. And he had the gall to give me The Stare? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Finally arrived at Skyline Regional Park. Although I did have my GPS, for the second week in a row, I had forgotten to load the route. Thankfully, it is straight forward: Quartz Mine Trail, a bit of Tortuga Trail, then up Javelina Summit Trail. (Which LindaAnn has a great description of.)

Did my hike. Outbound did well. Great view from the top of Javelina Summit. Lots of F-35s. Slipped & fell on the way down, but no big deal. I was trying to move fast.

Afterwards, stopped at Carl’s Jr. for fountain drink. The tinny drive-thru speaker now has voice-activated ordering. No! Just no. After the guy in front of me cleared, I drove right through. So, I crossed Watson Rd. to the Circle K. That had some sort of scan yourself setup, with a vending machine-like bill slider, and change coming out God knows where. With a worker standing there. Can't YOU just ring it up? I left my change. The Circle K in Payson has that too. Never again. Circle K now on the permanent Ban List.

I won't even get into Thursday and Friday ... 😆

For some reason we decided to drive to east LA to hike.
Got started at first light. Beautiful morning.
Quite a few folks out hiking for a sorta weekday (Friday).
Nice wildflowers in some limited areas. Probably quite a few in another week.
Coffee then lunch downtown after. Thanks Kelly! :)

early start driving out to skyline
john and i got going around 0630
we cut down the big loop we did last time, leaving out javelina and pyrite
went counterclockwise this time
still double digits, decent elevation gain and linkage
i think either direction, the last couple miles drag a bit
john brought coffee for after and then bought lunch downtown - thank you!
nice morning

Out and back hike to Javelina Summit this morning. Started at the parking area just behind the entrance station. Took the Connector to Quartz Mine, a bit on Tortuga, and then up the rugged Javelina Summit trail. Saw 1 hiker just below the summit on the way up and 5 more on my way back to the van. Windy on the slopes but not at the summit. Great views. Signed the summit register, HAZ ROCKS!

Completed 3 of 4 peaks 1 year ago. Created a route to knock out the final one, plus 2 other trails that still needed to be checked off the HAZ list. Only spot in town to elude the rain today. Let's do it.

Checked out Watson overlook at the beginning. Javalina proved to be the most difficult peak of the 4. Registry at top. Next looped around, added an extra peak and then headed back toward parking lot.

Challenge check, not many people and also met a couple of cute Doodles along the route.

john and i had this on our list, and it was a good choice for today given the recent rain
copied @the_eagle's track and mostly followed it
we especially enjoyed the waypoint for the skyline pumpkinter
got going around 0700, clockwise on the loop
hit all the peaks: pyrite, valley vista, crest, javelina and watson
took skyline crest instead of lost creek and hit another little high point off trail along the ridgeline
fun hike, good variety, mileage and aeg, trails in good shape
fog rolling over the ridgelines was cool to see
the bright red barrel cactus after rain look nice
didn't realize i had been on crest summit, and javelina once we got near the summit
it's been awhile
thanks, john! good times :)

Kelly wanted to put this hike on our list. It remained there just one day.
Lots of rain for 18 hours before the hike, and it rained most of the drive out, but conditions were excellent once we got underway. Cool with a moderate breeze. A few light sprinkles.
Clouds and fog enveloped the peaks. Petrichor permeating our senses. Barrel cactus beaming red. Route Scout announcing the distance to the Skyline shltter (thanks Bruce). What's not to like?
We hiked the main loop clockwise. Only saw a dozen other hikers.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

I have wanted to check out this park for a while now and i finally got the chance. Followed the big outer loop from Linda, Joe and Denny's trip out here a few years ago. Hit 4 summits - all with very nice views and different feels.

I was impressed with this park. Lot of fun trails out there and nifty summits to keep you busy all day

Had been to this park once previously in 2019. That was a Meetup outing where I continued out beyond anyone else. Upped the ante further with this trip.

Grand tour across much of the park, up several peaks. We turned around a bit shy of the 4th peak due to light concerns. Encountered a couple delays in getting started. May return for a diff outing to finish Javalina Peak.
