The knees were talking to me when I got out of bed so I took it easy on the loop, or as easy as the loop would let me. Went CCW, first on the Quartz Mine Trail. I lost a little elevation initially, but I got it all back on my to the Skyline Crest trail. This trail is a very aggressive climb on its way to the ridgeline. Several steep switchbacks. I was in the mountain shadows for most of this climb, but the warming sun actually felt good when it hit me. Next, I did the Crest Summit. Short, only .17 miles, but steep in sections. Nice views to the south and west. Air quality not too bad today. After the Summit continued along the Skyline Crest. Nice ridge trail. Views to the east opened up along the way. Noticed a single track trail just east of the Skyline Park perimeter, (near the terminus of the Lost Creek trail) that might be worth checking out....I think it might tie into the trail involving the description for Peak 1976. Took the Lost Creek Trail west (this is basically a road) to the Mountain Wash Trail which is also, basically a road. Neither of these last trails are all that inspiring but they make for a nice loop. Weather was great. Low 70’s. Encountered 11 hikers. That number is not too bad considering the parking lot was near capacity when I got back. Wildlife was minimal....a rabbit and some lizards. |
