It had been a few years since I was out at Skyline RP, so I figured it was time. Started from the main parking lot and hiked west on the Turnbuckle Trail to Granite Falls Trail. Along Granite Falls somewhere I got off the trail an onto one of the service roads, but it doesn’t really look all that different from the trails in this park since they’re all so wide and possibly former mining roads.

Got back on Granite Falls and took the Pyrite Trail up to the Pyrite Summit, then headed down and onto Chuckwalla. Then I took Granite Fall again, but uphill to Valley Vista and hiked that to the summit there. It’s pretty windy along Valley Vista, enough that I needed to put my hood up just to keep my hat on my head. Early on along Valley Vista is what looked like a new trail, but it’s on older maps, so it’s probably another mining road. Looks like it just dead ends below, so if you walk it, you’ll like hike walk back up, which looks like pretty good climb.

After Valley Vista I took Lost Creek over to Quartz Mine and looped back to the parking lot on the Parking Lot Connector Trail. Saw almost no one on Pyrite or Chuckwalla, but from Lost Creek onward the traffic picked up. Mostly hikers, not many bikers. Weather was clear and sunny the entire time. Chilly to start but warmed up quickly. It’s a long drive out from Mesa, which is why I don’t get out here much. The drive out isn’t bad since there isn’t much traffic, but I-10 on the way back is touch and go with a lot of slow spots.

Started around 0815 and made a big loop around Skyline, hitting all four summits. Trails in mostly good shape, with a few rocky places. Cool and cloudy, light drizzle for almost the entire western half of the loop. Most of the hikers I saw were on the eastern half of the loop. Good workout.

Counter clockwise lasso hike with Carey this morning at Skyline Regional Park. Got there at 8am and yup, the parking lot was full. Good news is that more parking in on the way. Saw 2 hikers and 1 biker on the way up to Pyrite Summit. Much more traffic on the way back. Did see one horseback rider just outside of the parking area on return. Perfect weather and great views.

Early morning at Skyline Regional. Short loop, minimal elevation. Went clockwise on Mountain Wash - Turnbuckle - Granite Falls and then back on the Turnbuckle and Mountain Wash. Quiet, except for the Jete flying over around 7:30. No wildlife. Encountered 4 hikers and a runner as I headed back on the Turnbuckle.

Carey put together an interesting loop at Skyline for today's hike. We ended up on an old service road for a powerline that went up and over the hill. The powerline sparked a lot of speculation on what it could possibly be connecting end to end. Perhaps there was a weather or communication relay station on top of the mountain at some point. I'll have to see if it turns up on old topo maps. We started from the main parking lot, crossed the bridge to Mountain Wash, Turnbuckle to the 2nd Granite Falls intersection, Granite Falls to Chuckwalla, then north on old service roads to the powerline. Road to the second set of poles was completely eroded away. Christina and I made the scramble up to check it out and it did not disappoint! We could see two more sets of standards on the way to the top of the ridgeline. Maybe remnants of an old service road to the third standards. No idea how they got to the top. Explored some other old roads on the way back to Granite Falls and returned the rest of the way we came it. Saw a bunch of hikers and runners on the trails, no bikes today. One trail runner was very excited to tell about the rattlers he had seen out on the trails this morning. We weren't lucky enough to see any interesting wildlife. Post hike treats at Fry's on Watson afterwards.

Just checked the HAZ TOPO and it shows "Beacon 3074" where the powerline tops out on the ridgeline.

john and i decided to hit skyline this morning
got going around 0615
we did the reverse of a big loop we hiked in december 2022
hit the five main summits, plus another little one
breezy, a lot of dust in the air
saw a few people, more toward the end
good hike: mileage, aeg and linkage
i enjoyed certain things more this time, like skyline crest and the pyrite segment
the finish still drags a bit
na beers after and el norteno for lunch
good times, thanks john :)

I chose Skyline from a few hikes Kelly threw out as options. A bit of a drive but good to get out here annually. We followed a route, for the most part, we had done a few years ago.
Lots of miles and AEG to be had if you have the energy.
Temps were cool with a moderate breeze. Great hiking weather.
Lots of jets flying out of Luke today. Noisy but very cool to watch fly by.
Thanks, Kelly, for navigating and lunch. Like Denny you rock! :)

Lung burning black out climb up Pyrite followed by terrifying descent. Almost flipped over the front on two of the steep tight switchbacks. Bailed on the summit trail. Can't wait to return and try again :) Stopped to chat with a couple in a sweet 2003 Safari Trek from British Columbia Canada. Recent trail maintenance on Pyrite, it's in very good condition.
Started from the parking area midway between the park entrance and the main parking area. Rode up the connector trail, through the main parking area and across the bridge. Did a clockwise loop on Mountain Wash, Turnbuckle, Granite Falls, Pyrite, Chuckwalla, south on Granite Falls, and then took the jeep road back to Mountain Wash to skip the climb back up Granite Falls and Turnbuckle. Returned to the van on my original route.

Met with the Harem (Carey, Yolanda) at Skyline this morning for a hike out the Pyrite Summit. Saw many hikers on Mountain Wash and Turnbuckle segments, but only 3 hikers and a Park Ranger on the rest of the trails. The Park Ranger was installing really nice, new stainless steel trail markers. Temps were way warmer that I was expecting.

For some reason we decided to drive to east LA to hike.
Got started at first light. Beautiful morning.
Quite a few folks out hiking for a sorta weekday (Friday).
Nice wildflowers in some limited areas. Probably quite a few in another week.
Coffee then lunch downtown after. Thanks Kelly! :)

Returned to Skyline Park to continue gridding ATV tracks that interact with Granite Falls trail. Got to the TH at 6am. This morning I took the Turnbuckle to the back end and started on the Granite Falls trail from its north terminus. I hiked the GF trail going CCW and anytime I came across an ATV track I would follow it to where it ended, crossed over the Chuckwalla trail (those ATV tracks would be for another day) or where it merged into a wash. Lot of back and forth with little that was noteworthy. There were quite a few tracks that crisscrossed in the northeast section which made for a tangled mess, but otherwise the the tracks were pretty straightforward.

Ok hike, with one exception; and it’s actually kind of ironic. I had set out this morning to hike GF and the surrounding ATV tracks. And wouldn’t you know, there was a guy out on his quad buzzing in, on one of the washes. At first I was kind of annoyed, because he was disrupting the morning tranquility and, technically speaking, motorized vehicles are not allowed in the park. Then I reflected, that everyone has to enjoy nature in their own way and these ATV tracks where here before the trail system existed. My mollifications lasted all of 5 minutes. That’s how long it took for the joker to leave the ATV tracks and to start “tearing” across the desert. He came within a couple 100 yards of me and I could literally hear the desert brush being grounded under his tires. I have never seen anyone be so blatantly irresponsible. ](*,) ](*,) It left me fuming for a good half hour and took away from the hike.

Early morning hike at Skyline. After yesterday’s tumble, I wanted to take it easy so I decided to do some off trail gridding around the Turnbuckle - Granite Falls trails. This is another way of saying that I did some ATV track gridding.

Got to the TH a little after 6am. Surprised to see there were already 10 cars in the lot. Went in about .25 miles where the Turnbuckle starts its loop and took the user trail/(road) that took off just to the south of the Turnbuckle. Basically followed this road, and its off-chutes, as they meandered to the west and to the south. There were not nearly as many splinters as I anticipated, and most of those, ended up in the wash.

Notes: Followed the main road that heads south from Granite Falls (first one encountered from that trail) for about 1 mile before coming to a private property sign. Felt like that was a good and memorable turn around spot. Surprised at how the wash developed. The ATV tracks hit the wash on a number of occasions. Initially, the encounters, made the wash feel confining and “sunken” from the rest of the landscape. However, as I encountered the wash further south, it opened up. More like a plain. I followed one ATV track to the east. I kept expecting to come across the wash, only to discover that by that time the wash had flattened into a plain. This track ended up taking me to the entry road and the “flattened” wash. When crossing the wash I had noticed quite a few tire tracks in the sand and it was evident that this was one of the entry points ATVs. The only noteworthy track was an unused one, that headed up one of the smaller hills to the west. Noteworthy, only because it gained some elevation and headed into the hills. It stopped at the top of the hill, well below the surrounding peaks. This track is easily visible from the trails of Skyline. I did not follow any of the tracks in the washes. That would be for another visit. There are also still a number of roads further to the north that interact with the Skyline trails that will also need to be explored…for another day.

Did about .5 miles on Granite Falls and about the same on the Turnbuckle. Opted to give credit to GF, even though I only did a third of the trail. Weather was nice, but warmer than I expected for a 6am hike. Encountered 2 hikers and 1 biker. Minimal wildlife…a couple of chipmunks and quail.

Kelly wanted to put this hike on our list. It remained there just one day.
Lots of rain for 18 hours before the hike, and it rained most of the drive out, but conditions were excellent once we got underway. Cool with a moderate breeze. A few light sprinkles.
Clouds and fog enveloped the peaks. Petrichor permeating our senses. Barrel cactus beaming red. Route Scout announcing the distance to the Skyline shltter (thanks Bruce). What's not to like?
We hiked the main loop clockwise. Only saw a dozen other hikers.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i had this on our list, and it was a good choice for today given the recent rain
copied @the_eagle's track and mostly followed it
we especially enjoyed the waypoint for the skyline pumpkinter
got going around 0700, clockwise on the loop
hit all the peaks: pyrite, valley vista, crest, javelina and watson
took skyline crest instead of lost creek and hit another little high point off trail along the ridgeline
fun hike, good variety, mileage and aeg, trails in good shape
fog rolling over the ridgelines was cool to see
the bright red barrel cactus after rain look nice
didn't realize i had been on crest summit, and javelina once we got near the summit
it's been awhile
thanks, john! good times :)

I have wanted to check out this park for a while now and i finally got the chance. Followed the big outer loop from Linda, Joe and Denny's trip out here a few years ago. Hit 4 summits - all with very nice views and different feels.

I was impressed with this park. Lot of fun trails out there and nifty summits to keep you busy all day

Had been to this park once previously in 2019. That was a Meetup outing where I continued out beyond anyone else. Upped the ante further with this trip.

Grand tour across much of the park, up several peaks. We turned around a bit shy of the 4th peak due to light concerns. Encountered a couple delays in getting started. May return for a diff outing to finish Javalina Peak.

Haven't been to Skyline for ages! My neighbor Craig joined me for the rocky climbs and descents offered by the Skyline park trails. Parking area still busy as ever even with the construction traffic delays on the I-10.

Been trying to log this one for a while. Decided to hit the four summits of Skyline Regional Park. Headed down Quartz Mine Trail and down Tortuga and over to Javelina Summit. We back tracked our way to the Skyline Crest Trail and hit the summit real quick. We continued on Skyline Crest and went up Turnbuckle to the Valley Vista Summit. We then cut to Chuckwalla and started the trek up Pyrite. At the top of Pyrite right before the Summit trail we met a guy on a horse, we both went on our ways after a small chat. We went up Pyrite all the way to the Summit and then headed back down to meet the Granite Falls Trail. Headed back to Turnbuckle and then back to the truck for some much needed cold water. Was disappointed when I got home that the delivery service was not able to pick up my beer, I was really looking forward to it. Great hike with some good AEG.
