Carey put together an interesting loop at Skyline for today's hike. We ended up on an old service road for a powerline that went up and over the hill. The powerline sparked a lot of speculation on what it could possibly be connecting end to end. Perhaps there was a weather or communication relay station on top of the mountain at some point. I'll have to see if it turns up on old topo maps. We started from the main parking lot, crossed the bridge to Mountain Wash, Turnbuckle to the 2nd Granite Falls intersection, Granite Falls to Chuckwalla, then north on old service roads to the powerline. Road to the second set of poles was completely eroded away. Christina and I made the scramble up to check it out and it did not disappoint! We could see two more sets of standards on the way to the top of the ridgeline. Maybe remnants of an old service road to the third standards. No idea how they got to the top. Explored some other old roads on the way back to Granite Falls and returned the rest of the way we came it. Saw a bunch of hikers and runners on the trails, no bikes today. One trail runner was very excited to tell about the rattlers he had seen out on the trails this morning. We weren't lucky enough to see any interesting wildlife. Post hike treats at Fry's on Watson afterwards.

Just checked the HAZ TOPO and it shows "Beacon 3074" where the powerline tops out on the ridgeline.

I chose Skyline from a few hikes Kelly threw out as options. A bit of a drive but good to get out here annually. We followed a route, for the most part, we had done a few years ago.
Lots of miles and AEG to be had if you have the energy.
Temps were cool with a moderate breeze. Great hiking weather.
Lots of jets flying out of Luke today. Noisy but very cool to watch fly by.
Thanks, Kelly, for navigating and lunch. Like Denny you rock! :)

Lung burning black out climb up Pyrite followed by terrifying descent. Almost flipped over the front on two of the steep tight switchbacks. Bailed on the summit trail. Can't wait to return and try again :) Stopped to chat with a couple in a sweet 2003 Safari Trek from British Columbia Canada. Recent trail maintenance on Pyrite, it's in very good condition.
Started from the parking area midway between the park entrance and the main parking area. Rode up the connector trail, through the main parking area and across the bridge. Did a clockwise loop on Mountain Wash, Turnbuckle, Granite Falls, Pyrite, Chuckwalla, south on Granite Falls, and then took the jeep road back to Mountain Wash to skip the climb back up Granite Falls and Turnbuckle. Returned to the van on my original route.

Early morning hike at Skyline Regional Park. Wanted to do a trail and continue some of the “gridding” of the trails/roads in the area. I decided on the Chuckwalla. It would get some miles and get me to an ATV road I wanted to follow. Started a little before 7am.

I took the Turnbuckle and Granite Falls to get to the beginning of the Chuckwalla (1.52 miles). I then followed the Chuckwalla, going in a clockwise direction to reach the road that headed up the western slope of the ridgeline to the east of the trail (3.66 miles). There were more direct ways to reach this road, but I wanted to get a trail in and this route allowed me to get most of the Chuckwalla. The road goes about 1/3 of the way up the mountain before petering out. As I was hiking it, I noticed old power poles climbing the slope of the mountain and it became apparent that this road probably was involved in their installation and maintenance. The road stopped just short of the second pole. It took a little bit of scrambling, but I made it up to the second pole, only to discover that there was a third pole at the top of the ridgeline. I had always wanted to check out the ridgeline and since I was already 1/3 of the way there I figured why not. A couple of reasons would have steep slopes that were infested with chollas. Chollas were everywhere. I ended up staying mainly in a wash. The chollas weren’t that bad in the wash and the rocks provided a more stable surface to climb. I came up south of the pole, so I had to follow the ridgeline for a short distance to reach, what turned out to be the high point on the ridgeline. Looking around, it looked to the 4th or 5th tallest peak in the White Tank Mountains. It was definitely the tallest peak on the west side. The power line ended there, though there was an odd structure next to it that I couldn’t fathom. It looked like something that might have been used for mining, but I didn’t see any talings and there was a line going from the power pole to the top of the structure. :?

I enjoyed the views for a bit and then gathered myself for the descent down. I had decided that I would follow the ridgeline down towards Mountain Wash Trail. I must say I am very disappointed with the animals in the area. I had expected (hoped) for a game trail or a use trail to help with the descent. No luck. :( As I got closer to the park trails I did start to see a few cairns and a few tracks of previous hikers, but nothing that would constitute a trail. The best path is to stay on the ridge. Generally, it is better footing and a more controlled descent. I wish I had followed through with that thought. As I got closer to the Mountain Wash Trail, I couldn’t resist the lure of the nearby trail just below me. Even going slowly, I couldn’t avoid a few slips and one of them had my hand come down on a cholla dropping. YOUCH! Needless to say I was very happy to make it back to a defined trail  After my pace to the peak and along the ridgeline, I thought I was flying along the Mountain Wash back to the TH.

Pretty neat, off trail city hike. Seeing the odd structure on the summit made the hike. Seeing remnants of the past always make me wonder about the people who built em, and in this case, it’s purpose. I didn’t see anyone for most of the hike until I got back on the trails and then I encountered 2 hikers and 1 biker. No wildlife, but very unwelcomed cholla

Met with the Harem (Carey, Yolanda) at Skyline this morning for a hike out the Pyrite Summit. Saw many hikers on Mountain Wash and Turnbuckle segments, but only 3 hikers and a Park Ranger on the rest of the trails. The Park Ranger was installing really nice, new stainless steel trail markers. Temps were way warmer that I was expecting.

For some reason we decided to drive to east LA to hike.
Got started at first light. Beautiful morning.
Quite a few folks out hiking for a sorta weekday (Friday).
Nice wildflowers in some limited areas. Probably quite a few in another week.
Coffee then lunch downtown after. Thanks Kelly! :)

Kelly wanted to put this hike on our list. It remained there just one day.
Lots of rain for 18 hours before the hike, and it rained most of the drive out, but conditions were excellent once we got underway. Cool with a moderate breeze. A few light sprinkles.
Clouds and fog enveloped the peaks. Petrichor permeating our senses. Barrel cactus beaming red. Route Scout announcing the distance to the Skyline shltter (thanks Bruce). What's not to like?
We hiked the main loop clockwise. Only saw a dozen other hikers.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i had this on our list, and it was a good choice for today given the recent rain
copied @the_eagle's track and mostly followed it
we especially enjoyed the waypoint for the skyline pumpkinter
got going around 0700, clockwise on the loop
hit all the peaks: pyrite, valley vista, crest, javelina and watson
took skyline crest instead of lost creek and hit another little high point off trail along the ridgeline
fun hike, good variety, mileage and aeg, trails in good shape
fog rolling over the ridgelines was cool to see
the bright red barrel cactus after rain look nice
didn't realize i had been on crest summit, and javelina once we got near the summit
it's been awhile
thanks, john! good times :)

I have wanted to check out this park for a while now and i finally got the chance. Followed the big outer loop from Linda, Joe and Denny's trip out here a few years ago. Hit 4 summits - all with very nice views and different feels.

I was impressed with this park. Lot of fun trails out there and nifty summits to keep you busy all day

Had been to this park once previously in 2019. That was a Meetup outing where I continued out beyond anyone else. Upped the ante further with this trip.

Grand tour across much of the park, up several peaks. We turned around a bit shy of the 4th peak due to light concerns. Encountered a couple delays in getting started. May return for a diff outing to finish Javalina Peak.

Haven't been to Skyline for ages! My neighbor Craig joined me for the rocky climbs and descents offered by the Skyline park trails. Parking area still busy as ever even with the construction traffic delays on the I-10.

Been trying to log this one for a while. Decided to hit the four summits of Skyline Regional Park. Headed down Quartz Mine Trail and down Tortuga and over to Javelina Summit. We back tracked our way to the Skyline Crest Trail and hit the summit real quick. We continued on Skyline Crest and went up Turnbuckle to the Valley Vista Summit. We then cut to Chuckwalla and started the trek up Pyrite. At the top of Pyrite right before the Summit trail we met a guy on a horse, we both went on our ways after a small chat. We went up Pyrite all the way to the Summit and then headed back down to meet the Granite Falls Trail. Headed back to Turnbuckle and then back to the truck for some much needed cold water. Was disappointed when I got home that the delivery service was not able to pick up my beer, I was really looking forward to it. Great hike with some good AEG.

Belated post. Early morning hike/run at Skyline Park. Wanted to get a hike involving the Chuckwalla. Whenever I’ve done the Chuckwalla (or portions of it), I’ve always done it in a clockwise manner. Today I thought I would switch it up. Went up on the Mountain Wash trail. This is one of the more unsightly trails in the park, but also one of the easier trails to gain elevation. You are in a valley so views are very limited and I am pretty sure this trail was an ATV road in its former life. As you near the top the Mountain Wash Trail ends and I joined the Turnbuckle Trail. The Turnbuckle as a whole is a nice trail, though the segment that I was on was a continuation of the road from the MW trail. When I reached the saddle I hit the Valley View Trail. Nice little climb to the summit. Solid, short single track. Elevation gain isn’t extreme with a nice mixture of up with flat sections. This trail does a nice job of interacting with the landscape. Returning to the saddle, I went down the backside on the Turnbuckle. This is composed of a very steep section of switchbacks. Not fun going up or down  As the Turnbuckle wraps west around the mountain it junctures with the Granite Falls trail. Took GF north for a short distance. This trail extends through some of the flatter sections of Skyline Park. There are also quite a few ATV tracks that crisscross this region in my attempt to connect to the Chuckwalla I inadvertently took one of these ATV trails. Kind of annoyed since my main goal was to do the Chuckwalla. I decided to embrace the mistake and follow the ATV track, knowing (because of the direction it was heading) that I would eventually run into the Chuckwalla. It did. But I decided to follow the ATV track a little more, just to see how it played in the region. Didn’t do it for too long. Just up and around a tiny hillock that it had scarred and that I had eyeballed several times over the years. Wrapping around the hill for me back on the Chuckwalla. Followed the Chuckwalla as it swung out to the north and then played along the base of the mountains on the western edge of the park. Trail is fairly flat, but going CCW this stretch has a downward tilt to it; which is always nice. Eventually, the Chuckwalla junctures back with the Granite Falls trail which I took back to the Turnbuckle. From there it was a short jaunt back to the TH. Nice morning to be out. Chilly at first, but it doesn’t take long to warm up climbing these trails. Encountered a decent number of users throughout the park. No wildlife.

Working my way around the Phoenix metro area doing winter locals’ hikes, today was Skyline Regional Park’s turn.

I did the Pyrite Summit loop clockwise: The climb is more gradual that way, 650 AEG over 1½ miles (an 8% grade), whereas counter-clockwise is 550 AEG in only ¾ of a mile (a 14% grade), even with plenty of switchbacks.

Rain was expected off & on through the weekend in Maricopa County, and it was steadily drizzling as I headed out. 🌧

Skyline Regional Park’s trails are well laid out, and well maintained. Probably better than any other park in Maricopa County. You never have to worry about your footing, not even crossing a wash, so you can spend your time looking around, rather than staring at the ground. (Though the scenery is not the greatest, unless you are on a summit.)

Other than the Pyrite Trail, Pyrite Summit Trail, and the bit of Turnbuckle Trail on the west of Valley Vista, I had previously hiked the trails on this loop. I started hiking at 8:30 a.m., and made the turn onto Pyrite Trail 30 minutes later.

If you see an antenna on a peak just south, that is some sort of aviation beacon, not Pyrite Summit. I suspect the beacon is for Luke Air Force Base, as pairs of F-35 Lightning IIs headed south over it all morning long. Even in the rain. Probably headed out to the Goldwater Range, south of I-8, to play in the box. ⚡️

*** Correction. I just looked at a Flying Flyver set, and it's just an old wooden signal tower, no longer in operation.

Pyrite Trail reaches its high point at the junction with Pyrite Summit Trail. If you look back, you can see the Pyrite Trail winding back down into the valley, with the trailhead in the distance. You’ve come all this way, no sense skipping the summit!

Pyrite Summit Trail climbs 200 ft. in a ⅓ of a mile to the summit, which is marked by a cairn and one of many numerous marker poles. I should have checked for a geocache, but blanked it while enjoying the view. (And a trail beer.) 🍺

Despite not being very prominent, Pyrite Summit has some solid views, particularly to the south and west, across flatter surrounding terrain. Though they do not show up well in my photos, I could easily identify Woolsey Peak, in the Gila Bend Mountains, Saddle Mountain and, of course, the Sierra Estrella.

After enjoying the Pyrite Summit views, I headed down the steep northern section of Pyrite Trail to the junction with Chuckwalla Trail. Other than a brief stop by the aging saguaro just north of Granite Falls Trail, it was a quick jaunt back to the trailhead.

I drove partway home on I-10, before exiting at 35th Ave. to head up to Indian School Rd. Just south of Grand Avenue, in Maryvale, there was a traffic snarl at an apartment complex where a bunch of cops were pointing long guns at someone. (Or one of the apartments.) Another cop came barreling down the turn lane as I cleared the area. I wonder what that was all about? Hopefully I captured it on my dashcam!

We did a near reverse of the grand tour loop I hiked with Linda and Denny in March 2019. The park was just over half full based on parking. It didn't pick up much throughout the day either. A fair percentage did the mut on a rope polka dance. Maybe two? mountain bikers and just a couple of low-key runners. Music sharing? was limited to one guy we figured we'd breeze by but he held well to a saddle. Everything still feels perfect in this park. West-Cali-Valley never disappoints. The unique Estrella view along with intriguing western views are worthy alone.

I was a little apprehensive about trying here, knowing that it could possibly be crowded. With a pre-dawn start and temps in the low 40's, there were only a hand full of cars in the main lot. about a mile or two in, we passed a group with 3 mothers and 5 or so 8-10 year olds. They were finishing up after a 5:30am start with their kids. Surprisingly, all in the group looked happy. On the Granite Falls trail, we never did see the falls. I'm not sure they exist.

First up was Pyrite Peak. Great views to the west and south. We continued our CW trek, loosing altitude, the sun behind the mountain and some warmth.

The saddle at the Valley Vista Trail seems to be popular and had the most people we'd seen all day. There was plenty of room to navigate safely through the 10 or so people there. At the Valley Vista Peak, we met a nice young lady (Karibou) and her German Shepard. She was quite impressed with Joe's Google rating. Swipe left for me. More good views here.

The third peak on the day was Javelina Peak. This was my favorite climb of the day. Steeper than the others and an impressive tread all the way up. the last 500' or so get noticeably steeper, but we saw a lady at the top with a small human in a backpack. This summit provides good views to the NE to the SE.

Overall impression of the park.
- The park was not too crowded and for anyone you came across, it was relatively easy to maintain at least 6'.
- The trails are wide and well groomed throughout.
- There is informative signage. I found that with the many, many trails out there, it was easier to consult the GPS for turns to keep on our planned route.
- Dog Friendly, we saw many, all on leashes.

Great temps (41-66), great trails for a "City" hike. Worth a try for any of you that are looking for something different, not too far away.
