Started around 0815 and made a big loop around Skyline, hitting all four summits. Trails in mostly good shape, with a few rocky places. Cool and cloudy, light drizzle for almost the entire western half of the loop. Most of the hikers I saw were on the eastern half of the loop. Good workout.

Morning hike at Skyline Regional Park. Got to the TH a little after 7am to discover ongoing construction at the park. There are two sites that they have fenced off with some grading occurring. Both sites are in the parking area and are not impacting the trails.

Did a repeat of a hike a did a few years ago. Went clockwise. First on the Mountain Wash to Lost Creek to Quartzite to Tortuga and then to my objective; the Javelina Trail. In my opinion the best trail in Skyline. Love how the trail plays with the mountain. There’s a new summit log at the top. One of the first to sign it. Spent some time at the top, enjoying the views and the solitude. Actually the air quality was pretty poor so the views could have been better. Still enjoyed it. Noticed a trail going off to the east of the summit. I didn’t follow it, but I wouldn’t be surprised if there is a use trail going down to the homes below. Returned to the Quartz and continued clockwise. As I neared the parking lot I visited Watson Overlook to get some pictures of the construction sites. Not much to see yet, but I’ll be curious to see what happens.

Nice morning. In the 50’s to start. No wildlife. Encountered 17 hikers. Two on the Javelina as I was coming down. The rest on the Quarzite. Most as I was nearing the TH. I didn’t plan it, but this ended up being my third Javelina trail in a row…..SoMo (Ridgeline/Javelina), Goldfields (Javelina/Checkmate/Anniversary/Rough+Ready) and today’s. Not going to happen tomorrow, but it might be kind of fun to see how many different trails you can do with a particular name.

Consistently difficult to get peeps out to this spot. I'm still a fan. With many options, views and challenge. Tortuga was the only trail I hadn't followed out. Ends at a fence where more building is immenint.

Then up Javalina Peak which felt easier than it did 2 years ago. Wasn't going to reach stated numbers so added on Crest Summit. Next took loop around instead of same path back. Finally over bridge to opposite side of parking lot.

I chose Skyline from a few hikes Kelly threw out as options. A bit of a drive but good to get out here annually. We followed a route, for the most part, we had done a few years ago.
Lots of miles and AEG to be had if you have the energy.
Temps were cool with a moderate breeze. Great hiking weather.
Lots of jets flying out of Luke today. Noisy but very cool to watch fly by.
Thanks, Kelly, for navigating and lunch. Like Denny you rock! :)

Early morning hike/jog around Skyline. I had to meet someone in Buckeye, so,I thought an early morning hike on the Javelina was a great way to kill a few hours. Got to the TH a little before 7am. Surprisingly, not that busy. This park usually has a good morning crowd. I decided to hit Javelina doing a loop in the clockwise direction. I took Mountain Wash and then up and over on Lost Creek. Both these trails are roads that have been dubbed “trails”. They’re wide, unimaginative and when there is a hill that needs to be climbed they take it straight on. Next is the Quartz Mine which is a much more entertaining trail. A single track that holds its elevation with the exception of a couple of decent climbs. Hopped briefly on the Tortuga before reaching the Javelina. The Javelina is a great climb that does a fantastic job of interacting with the mountain. Touched the top and then headed back down and continued on my loop of the Quartz Mine.

Saw 1 jogger and 9 hikers, almost all on my way back to the TH. No wildlife. Temps were nice. Weather didn’t seem that bad, but driving out of the park I could see the smog :sk: . I’m surprised I couldn’t taste it on my hike. YUCK!

Ran into a locked gate at White Tank Regional Park, turns out it doesn’t open at 5am until the end of this month. I bailed on my plans for Barry Goldwater Peak and headed over to Skyline, hitting the trail at 5:40am - no lamp necessary.

Decided to hit the main peaks in the area, Javelina, Crest, and Valley Vista in a counter-clockwise loop, starting just beyond the park gate. Last time I hiked Javelina, there were a ton of unsightly rock thrones built right on the trail - someone dismantled all of them that day and someone is happy to report they’re still gone.

It was quite warm around 8am - no shade to be found. I had the option to skip Valley Vista but had a hankering to gain over 2500ft for the day. It was worth it, even as I took the last sip of my reservoir a few minutes from the top. Thankfully I packed an extra liter, which got me back to the car. Last couple miles were dancing around my current physical threshold, especially in the unrelenting sunlight.

It’s been a couple of years since I last hiked in Skyline. But, unlike last time, I at least I managed to get a hike in, despite this week’s frustrations.

Almost left my GPS at home. Luckily, I realized it was missing as I was pulling out of my driveway.

I took the long, looping, route from Sunnyslope to Skyline: North on I-17, west & south on Loop 303, west & south on Sun Valley Parkway, then east on I-10 to Watson Rd. That way I could enjoy my McDonald’s breakfast — the Shamrock Shake machine was down — without constantly needing both hands on the wheel, like the hell that is I-10. 🚫☘️

First thing I noticed is that there is lots more traffic on Loop 303 between I-17 and Lake Pleasant Parkway. (The transition is still an offramp, not an interchange.) Also, Loop 303 has new interchanges at 43rd Ave. and 51st Ave., which didn’t even exist north of the Deem Hills before. (For the TSMC chip factory.) At the very least, I could see 43rd Ave. went through to Carefree Hwy. (Not sure about 51st Ave.)

Loop 303 south to Bell Rd. was its normal relatively sedate self. Heading west on Sun Valley Pkwy., the Dell Webb development on the south side of the road is now built out. After Sun Valley Pkwy. bends south, there is a large new development going in. The land prep looked almost done.

Got on I-10 heading east, and almost got sideswiped by guy passing on right, through the gore point, at 20 over. And he had the gall to give me The Stare? 🤷🏻‍♂️

Finally arrived at Skyline Regional Park. Although I did have my GPS, for the second week in a row, I had forgotten to load the route. Thankfully, it is straight forward: Quartz Mine Trail, a bit of Tortuga Trail, then up Javelina Summit Trail. (Which LindaAnn has a great description of.)

Did my hike. Outbound did well. Great view from the top of Javelina Summit. Lots of F-35s. Slipped & fell on the way down, but no big deal. I was trying to move fast.

Afterwards, stopped at Carl’s Jr. for fountain drink. The tinny drive-thru speaker now has voice-activated ordering. No! Just no. After the guy in front of me cleared, I drove right through. So, I crossed Watson Rd. to the Circle K. That had some sort of scan yourself setup, with a vending machine-like bill slider, and change coming out God knows where. With a worker standing there. Can't YOU just ring it up? I left my change. The Circle K in Payson has that too. Never again. Circle K now on the permanent Ban List.

I won't even get into Thursday and Friday ... 😆

Out and back hike to Javelina Summit this morning. Started at the parking area just behind the entrance station. Took the Connector to Quartz Mine, a bit on Tortuga, and then up the rugged Javelina Summit trail. Saw 1 hiker just below the summit on the way up and 5 more on my way back to the van. Windy on the slopes but not at the summit. Great views. Signed the summit register, HAZ ROCKS!

Completed 3 of 4 peaks 1 year ago. Created a route to knock out the final one, plus 2 other trails that still needed to be checked off the HAZ list. Only spot in town to elude the rain today. Let's do it.

Checked out Watson overlook at the beginning. Javalina proved to be the most difficult peak of the 4. Registry at top. Next looped around, added an extra peak and then headed back toward parking lot.

Challenge check, not many people and also met a couple of cute Doodles along the route.

Early morning hike at Skyline Park. Got to the TH a little before 5:30. Still dark, but I was surprised to see 3 people just finishing a hike as I was getting started. Great temps, though it seemed a little warmer than the previous two days. Very breezy early on. Did this loop with a tail going CCW. Took Quartz Mine to where it connects with Tortuga and then Tortuga to Javelina Summit. (Tortuga and Javelina Summit make the tail). Love Javelina Summit!! Javelina and Pyrite are the two best trails in the park imho. Signed the register at the top. (The book is full and is need of replacing). Noticed a definite trail heading east from the peak. Not an official trail, but it looks well used. Will have to check it out with a future visit. Returned the way I came and then continued my loop on the Quartz Mine. Then took Lost Creek and Mountain Wash to close the loop and get back to the TH.

Leg still an issue, but as long as I don’t push it seems to be ok. No wildlife except for a few lizards and about 30 birds “riding the the wind” above Javelina Summit. Pretty cool. None of the birds were flapping, they were just hovering in place. Only encountered 3 hikers. Forgot my Garmin so I used stats from a previous hike.

Kelly wanted to put this hike on our list. It remained there just one day.
Lots of rain for 18 hours before the hike, and it rained most of the drive out, but conditions were excellent once we got underway. Cool with a moderate breeze. A few light sprinkles.
Clouds and fog enveloped the peaks. Petrichor permeating our senses. Barrel cactus beaming red. Route Scout announcing the distance to the Skyline shltter (thanks Bruce). What's not to like?
We hiked the main loop clockwise. Only saw a dozen other hikers.
Fun hike. Thanks Kelly. :)

john and i had this on our list, and it was a good choice for today given the recent rain
copied @the_eagle's track and mostly followed it
we especially enjoyed the waypoint for the skyline pumpkinter
got going around 0700, clockwise on the loop
hit all the peaks: pyrite, valley vista, crest, javelina and watson
took skyline crest instead of lost creek and hit another little high point off trail along the ridgeline
fun hike, good variety, mileage and aeg, trails in good shape
fog rolling over the ridgelines was cool to see
the bright red barrel cactus after rain look nice
didn't realize i had been on crest summit, and javelina once we got near the summit
it's been awhile
thanks, john! good times :)

I have wanted to check out this park for a while now and i finally got the chance. Followed the big outer loop from Linda, Joe and Denny's trip out here a few years ago. Hit 4 summits - all with very nice views and different feels.

I was impressed with this park. Lot of fun trails out there and nifty summits to keep you busy all day

Been trying to log this one for a while. Decided to hit the four summits of Skyline Regional Park. Headed down Quartz Mine Trail and down Tortuga and over to Javelina Summit. We back tracked our way to the Skyline Crest Trail and hit the summit real quick. We continued on Skyline Crest and went up Turnbuckle to the Valley Vista Summit. We then cut to Chuckwalla and started the trek up Pyrite. At the top of Pyrite right before the Summit trail we met a guy on a horse, we both went on our ways after a small chat. We went up Pyrite all the way to the Summit and then headed back down to meet the Granite Falls Trail. Headed back to Turnbuckle and then back to the truck for some much needed cold water. Was disappointed when I got home that the delivery service was not able to pick up my beer, I was really looking forward to it. Great hike with some good AEG.

This is a combination of 7 trips into Skyline Regional Park. From January 18 through April 26th. I used these trips to help get in better shape for Mount Hood this Spring.
My pack ranged from 36lbs to 45lbs. Average 4.22 Miles @ 830ft gain.

Parked at the gate and headed to 2110 via Quartz. Headed to 2212 next, then back to the car. I've been nursing a bad knee for months so it's great to get in a good hike without any pain. Spotted a gray fox in the valley between the two peaks.

Route Scout saved me a ton on a new GPS - my compliments to the chef.

Met Angela and Tom at the surprisingly mostly empty trailhead just before 0830. Headed east on Quartz Mine, making the side trip to Watson Overlook. Very breezy, with cool temps to start. Continuing east, we got on Tortuga Trail, then up to Javelina Summit, which is a nice little climb.

Once back down, we headed over to Skyline Crest Trail, which I think is one of the best in the park. Another side trip over to the Crest Summit, where we had a snack. Temps were warming up by then, but still breezy. We enjoyed the jets from Luke flying overhead. Continued north on Skyline Crest, then west on Lost Creek for a short distance, then Mountain Wash for a short distance.

Once at the junction with Turnbuckle, Angela opted to wait for me and Tom to head over to Valley Vista, which we did real quick, then headed back to the saddle to meet back up with Angela. Easy hike down Turnbuckle back to the parking lot.

Nice day, not many people out on the trails, and great conversation. Nice to see Angela again, and good to finally meet Tom.
