Reach TH @ 7 am. A minor miracle for me. 😛 Up East which wasn't as difficult as I remembered from 9-8-2019. Chill at boundary with guy doing loop rev of us. Going down W was mostly easy. Terrain does limit how fast one can move most of the way.

Chill at water next to Crossover Trail. After already hiking 13 miles, that first mile was brutal. Next couple were much easier. Finished an hour and a half sooner than expected. Same time it took me to do E to boundary and back 6 years ago. 😊

Wanted something mellow with some decent mileage, while still being able to drive back to PHX in the evening, so I decided to check out Mt Thomas. Only vehicle in the lot when I showed up; guess most people didn't get the memo about the wilderness re-opening. It was nice seeing so few people on this trail. The weather started out hot, became somewhat pleasant at around 11k, then got hot again later. The off-trail part was quick and painless, with minimal deadfall to contend with, and the 2nd half being in a clearing.

Not a terribly interesting view from the top, but it's not a bad spot to hang out for a few minutes.

Saw a few more people the last couple miles, but still very light for a weekend. I've never seen this mountain so dry; can't imagine how bad it was before they opened it.

Did a big clockwise loop of Mt Baldy from my campsite at Winn Campground. Have not been up on Baldy in a very long time and it was delightful to be back. Moved well all day and had a great time. chilled on the white man summit for a while and at some other spots just taking in the day. Lot of downed trees on the upper parts of both east and west baldy but otherwise smooth sailing. filtered some water along west baldy a couple times so i could travel lightly. really lovely day

they closed the springerville district on me while i was out there. did not see that one coming so had to make alternate plans for the next day but it was fine

I had been wanting to hike up to Mount Thomas, and I was wondering how the aspens were in the Mount Baldy area, so I decided to head to the East Baldy Trial and find out.

There were quite a few yellow leaves to be seen along the East Baldy Trail, and I really enjoyed hiking on the trail. I stopped to take a break at the Hoodoo Overlook, and the scenery was exceptional from there.

I continued on the East Baldy Trail to about the 5.5 mile mark, and then went off-trail to the summit on Mount Thomas. From where I turned it was an easy off-trail to the summit. I wandered around on the flattish summit for a bit trying to locate the high point. I found a spot that looked like the highest point, but it is possible that another point might be a tad bit higher. From the highpoint I walked a short distance SW and found a cadastral survey marker that obviously marked the boundary between tribal land and the Baldy Wilderness. Instead of heading straight back to the East Baldy Trail I decided to wander off-trail for a bit as I made my way back to the East Baldy-West Baldy trail junction.

I then took the West Baldy Trail back to the Crossover Trail, and then took it back to the East Baldy Trail and the TH. The Crossover Trail was a bit of a slog on this day, and if I had it to do over again I would have returned on the East Baldy Trail back to the TH. The views of the aspens were much better on the East Baldy Trail than the West Baldy Trail.

There was a bit of deadfall to contend with on the East Baldy Trail, but not very much. Amazingly, there was essentially no deadfall on the West Baldy Trail -- usually there is more deadfall on West Baldy than East Baldy.

There was a good bit of water flowing alongside the lower part of the West Baldy Trail in the West Fork of the Little Colorado River.

It was a great day to hike in one of my favorite areas!

I'd say that the aspen leaves were slightly past peak, but they were awesome nonetheless.

Went out with my mom for a three-day hike in the Baldy Wilderness. Our family had hiked the West fork many years ago, and the East fork last year, but this was our first time doing the whole loop!

If this is your first time reading about the Baldy Wilderness, please be aware that the summit of Mt. Baldy is on the Apache reservation, and they do not permit access to the summit. Please be respectful of their religious beliefs and land rights by refraining from hiking to the summit.

Here’s a brief summary of the trip, highlighting the details:
Trail condition: Very good—mostly dirt, with few rocks or tree roots. New since last year: quite a few downed trees across the trail.
Wildlife: Elk sighted on the forest road to Winn campground the day we started our hike. Elk were heard bugling at all hours of the day and night throughout the whole trip. The only other exciting wildlife sighting was an owl catching a small rodent about half hour after sunset.
Water: As always, plenty of water for filtering in the East and West forks of the Little Colorado River. Baldy spring was dry at the trail crossing, but had plenty of water for filtering at the source if you hike up to it. All three drainages in the West fork (~5 miles in) had water flowing. Lee Valley Creek on the crossover trail also had plenty of water.
Weather: Perfect at this time of year! Low 40s at night and 60s to 70s during the day, depending on cloud cover
Scenery: We like the scenery in the East fork better…the hoodoos are spectacular!
Crossover trail: The crossover trail was a treat because the aspen trees were just starting to change to yellow foliage.
Crowds: This is a popular hiking destination. We met about 10 other backpackers on the trail, but there was never anyone near our camp. The backpackers do a pretty good job of spreading out throughout the wilderness. We met around 20 day hikers doing the full loop in one day, and probably another 20 day hikers near the trailheads on our first/last days of hiking.
Free time: Obviously this is a super short hike to spread out over three days. We hiked slowly since my mom is affected by the high elevation. We also took all the luxuries, including frisbees, Quiddler, Yahtzee, Backgammon, and Pass the Pigs.
Food: We made a new recipe on this trip—curry couscous. It is very simple and was simply delicious! We will certainly bring this one on future trips. Of course, you can suit the recipe to your tastes, but what I did was:
8 oz. couscous
2 oz. dried veggies
2 oz. sliced almonds
2 oz. raisins
1/4 tsp. curry powder
Salt to taste
Way too much food for two people! We ended up eating this for dinner, and then again for breakfast the next morning. Probably 5 oz. couscous would be better. Do you have a favorite backpacking recipe you’d like to share? I’d love to hear about it, as I’m always looking for new recipes (trying to get myself off Mountain House and Backpacker’s Pantry!)
Question: Does anyone know why there are so many dead/fallen trees in the Baldy Wilderness? It seems the area has never been burned by a forest fire. Bark beetles? Perhaps it’s just a really old forest?

Be safe out there, and make sure you look for forest fires before you go hiking somewhere!

I believe this is the spring near the airplane crash site. Normally, there is a small creek flowing under the trail through a culvert. This was dry. However, hiking up to the actual spring, there was plenty of water to filter, about 1 quart per minute.

We camped near here in the large meadow to the east. The LCR was around 2-3 feet wide and several inches deep. Plenty of water for filtering. Also, the two drainages to the northeast were both flowing.

Could only afford a few hours of hiking for the day so the hoodoos and a little beyond were just the ticket.

East Lot was crazy full with a 130pm start and 50 cars but it's Labor Day weekend.

Trail was busy but not bad and the 75F temperature with some clouds and breezes made for a perfect stroll.

Forecast was 30 percent chance and radar showed widespread storm activity.

A 1pm start with a nice 70F temperature.

It got really loud approaching hoodoos but otherwise no rain or reports of rain.

Nice rain storms in Pinetop but not Show Low and rain in Heber and Forest Lakes. A hot 97F in Payson at 5pm was a sign of how ugly the weather was going to be on my way back to Phx.

Left the surface of the sun after sunrise on Friday and arrived at East TH at nearly 11am.

Greeted at the TH where it was 65F and a cloudy day but zero rain and no thunderstorm activity whatsoever for the entire day which is a gift for Baldy in Aug--I thought the following day would also be thunderstorm free but the typical Baldy storms returned not once but twice yesterday!

Parking lot had a number of cars but trail activity was the usual Baldy Friday light.

Tough leaving Baldy yesterday after another hike up to the Hall Creek headwaters where at the TH it was 58F with light drizzle at 1pm vs 110F when rolled into town.

Escaped Phoenix's surface of the sun temperatures to find monsoon season on Baldy just beginning with evidence of prior rainfall Thursday too. Greer reported monsoon rainfall action on Thursday too but nothing Friday which isn't unusual for the monsoons--East or West Baldy can experience rain and not the other. 10 cars at West Baldy TH but East Baldy lot was empty at 9am but I waited out the rain before enjoying a rain cooled 60F overcast day to the peak.

Only a few people on the trail with most doing the entire Baldy loop which is becoming especially popular even for newbies.

Thought the morning rain might keep the usual afternoon monsoon storms away but it just delayed them from their usual 11am start with distant thunder beginning about 1pm.

Experienced some light rain followed by about 20 minutes of heavier rain on trek down but no lightning or thunder.

People should be prepared for monsoons on Baldy as NWS forecast yesterday was 70 percent chance of storms

Typical monsoons on Baldy contain frequent lightning, lots of thunder, and often hail.

Felt a bit bummed after last weekend's failed backpack attempt w/ kids, trying to split the typical Mt Baldy Loop into 3 days, so decided to head back and do it as a solo day hike. Was inspired by @lindaann, @joebartels, and @tortoise_hiker's route. Camped along FR 409 in order to get an early start, parked car at West Fork TH at 4am and had a pleasant moonlit hike through downtown Greer to start the day.

East Fork #95
Was faced by a few different forks right at the river crossing, rolled a die and headed up the correct one. Was nice to get this little climb knocked out in the predawn. Passed a few interesting signed spurs (Amberon Point, Scenic Loop), stuck to the main trail, hoping to get healthy distance before sunrise. Spooked a large herd of elk at the top, right at the fenceline. Made it to the Marble Spring area for a fantastic sunrise. Pleasant stroll through chilly meadows and small stands of pines, saw more elk and deer along the way. Trail is in great shape and easy to follow, only got confused once near Colter where the singletrack forks for a quarter mile before rejoining. Picked up a water cache at FR 409 before cutting over to Gabaldon Camp.

East Baldy #95
Utilized the camp trail before joining the 'main' route. Didn't do a lot of research on this trail, leaning into the unknown, was surprised at how much pine forest it went through (compared to West Baldy's meadows). Passed one campsite and a few slower backpackers, overall pretty quiet on the trail. The hoodoo overlook was cool, the exposed flanks were cool, the crash site was cool... This is a solid, enjoyable trail, less than a dozen deadfall to deal with, I was just getting tired at this point. Paused for a few more breaks than necessary to enjoy the area. Reached the saddle and did a quick dance towards the summit, just to be scared away by quickly-growing storm in the west.

West Baldy #94
Nice to walk downhill. The burn area was sad to walk through, though it did give good views of the West Fork meadow below. Quickly made it to the meadows and the trail began to get congested, lots of in-and-back hikers down here to skip around. Filtered up before the Crossover Trail (should have left a second water cache). Last mile dragged, didn't expect that little elevation and forest before trailhead.

West Fork #94
Swung over to culvert on the start of this (thanks @lindaann), then slowly strolled across the open meadow. Was definitely feeling the miles at this point and stopped for a lengthy rest. This trail felt much rougher than the other ones - more rocky sections, more annoying deadfall, and a few eroded spots - though I'll admit I was also feeling grumpy and sore, so... grain of salt. Views across West Fork were nice and I picked out different landmarks from the morning's hike. Also, that little drop before passing 9375', plus the spring box on the round, were enjoyable. Got a little sprinkle for the last mile, enough to soak me through right before getting back to the Jeep.

Ran into many newbies backpacking the baldy loop during my 3 days on the mountain. Both trailhead lots were full+ but not that many on the trails--did not check the overflow east baldy lot at the really cool & nearby Gabaldon Horse Campground which has some interesting paths as well as connection to the east baldy trail.

I've only seen 1 bear in the past 25 years hiking baldy and that was off trail near the east trail a couple years ago. On day 2 someone asked me about having to worry about baldy bears and I laughed!

HOWEVER, on day 3 a couple lost their pack with the fob to their honda accord as a bear ran off with it. The couple explained they were camped off the crossover within sight of Lee Valley Reservoir on Sunday when the guy awoke to a crash and found his gal missing and bear with her stuff. He yelled at the bear which dropped the pack but then it ran off with the goods as he grew concerned about his lady. Appears she was nearby viewing the lake and saw it all. Note to self as they said they couldn't find a large enough tree nearby and maybe the vicinity of the lake was a problem?

Not sure how they were able start their car as they were going to call AAA ft to get her apartment keys from the car before returning to Phx for her extra fob? drawbacks of keyless starting cars with fobs I guess? Maybe they had car towed as it was gone at 3pm when I returned.

Baldy East trail is in good shape regarding deadfall but trail crew timed out and had to leave 15 trees between miles 4-5 which are easy to navigate. Some reports I heard said West Baldy trail was completely free of deadfall as of Saturday but I wonder if they also ran out of time there too and had to leave some deadfall?

Bugs were not a problem at all on Friday but I started getting bit on Sat & Sunday so be prepared.

Weather was horrible as I missed out on hiking in 110F in Phx and instead had to suffer with afternoon TH temps of about 75F each day. No rain but drizzles nearby since monsoons haven't hit baldy yet.

Denny had his sights set on doing a Baldy Marathon & 5K. We left the Valley around midnight, and got to the Greer area at 0400. We cached water at the East & West Baldy trailheads along hwy 273 so that we wouldn’t have to carry water for the whole distance nor have to spend time filtering, then parked at the West Fork trailhead at the north end of Greer. Not much of a trailhead, but there’s room for about four vehicles to park east of the sign.

Got started around 0450 and walked the main road south through Greer to the East Fork trailhead. We immediately crossed the Little Colorado and started climbing up to Amberion Flat. The trail is more defined through this part and easy to follow. After a couple of miles, the trail fades significantly in places and becomes a search of fiberglass signs, cairns, and deciding which trampled path in the grass is a real trail. Using a gps track helped take a lot of the guesswork out of the way for a few miles. After a while, the trail became more defined again and turned into a series of passing through as many gates as possible before reaching the road. We saw a coyote running towards two elk, which was kind of fun to watch.

Short walk north on Hwy 273 to the East Baldy trailhead. We picked up our cached drinks and headed up the trail. And up. Reasonably easy incline, but with so many miles already behind us, it was a little more challenging than usual. I think there was only one downed tree crossing the trail, which was nice. The elevation was not Denny’s friend today, so at the East/West saddle, we opted to skip the side trip so the summit and headed down West Baldy after a short break.

The top of West Baldy has seen some recent erosion from runoff, but overall in good shape, with only three or four downed trees to deal with. The lower part of this trail is always my favorite with the trail on the grassy windswept hillside and the river running down below. Once at the West Baldy trailhead, we picked up our remaining cache, which it turned out we didn’t need, and took a short break before beginning the West Fork trail.

Finding the start of West Fork was a little challenging. It turns out you walk under the highway on the north side of the trailhead. There’s a gate immediately on the east side of the highway where the trail begins. West Fork is reasonably easy to follow, with cairns and signs helping in a few places. After listening to bugling elk all day, we were treated to almost endless elk sightings along most of this trail. Eventually, the trail descended into Greer, and the sight of the vehicle parked right next to the trailhead was most welcome.

Great hike, absolutely perfect weather, and great company. We got back to the Valley just after 2230. Driving to Greer and back in one day is usually a full day in itself, and throwing a 30 mile hike into the middle of that definitely makes for a big day.

I had thought about doing the Baldy Loop from Greer for a few years. I mentioned it to Linda on one of our local hikes and to my :o she was interested and ok with a early start time! Joe B jumped on board and it was a go :y: .
The departure time, cache set up and hike start time went great. We started a few minutes before the planned time of 5am. We walked down the middle of main street for our first mile and not one car interrupted our stroll :) . We started on East Fork and crossed the LCR without incident . Headlamps were only needed for another mile. The Aspen in the burn area are up to 15 or 20 ft. now. We heard the first of the Elk bugling in this area and it would continue off and on the rest of the hike. The second half of East Fork is overgrown with grass. The grass was no bother to our legs and Route Scout kept us on trail. We saw our first of many Elk on this section and one Coyote.
We grabbed our cache and headed up East Baldy. A nice section. The hoodoos with the Aspen and the views for miles our my favorite part of the East Baldy side. Only a couple down trees on this section. The climb with the Altitude hit me more then I thought it would :( . My pace slowed and by the time we got to the East/West junction I didn't have a summit in me. Joe and Linda wouldn't do it without me so we took a break and got ready for our next section. The Loop itself was our main objective.
West Baldy is a little chewed up on the top half mile from runoff. After that the trail is pretty good and only has a handful of downed trees in the (tree dead zone :scared:). The grassland along with the LCR on the lower section are my favorite on the West Baldy. This was my first time on the section between the crosscut and West Baldy trailhead. We grabbed our cache here, took a break and were ready for our final section.
Once we got on trail the West Fork was easier to follow then the East Fork. Once we started hitting open grass areas the Elk sightings would really pick up. It was very 8) to see a herd of cow Elk follow a big Bull Elk around with his every move. We saw this several times :y: . There were a few smaller bulls mixed in here and there as well. The bugling continued as well. This section was our shortest but we were tired so it seemed a little long :? . We finished before dark which was another goal as well :D .
The weather was great and the company top notch! Thanks to Linda for doing all the driving and Joe for making sure she was awake for it. Like Haz, you two rock!
I also want to thank you for putting up with my bellyaching! A lot of Hazers have joined me or let me join them on some epic hikes and backpack trips. Thanks to all of you. The bellyache is gone in a day but the memories :) :D :y: !!!!

A nice 900 foot climb in 2.5 miles through some amazing meadows and forest to an incredible overlook.

My trusty super hiker (who soon turns 70 years young) had a date to install a water softener back in Tucson but did this climb in nearly nearly 45 minutes each way while I continued onward to the high perch.

Baldy in a blur. Fell behind whenever I got the camera out.

Passed some Indians on the way to their sacred peak. Talking to them, noone was quite sure where the boundary was.

The West Fork part of the Loop is the leg with the visual meat, the other parts were a little blah.
