Wally and I hit the trail around 6:30 to cool temps. Half a dozen cars already at the trailhead and we saw a camp here and there. We saw a young coyote in the first mile and may have saved a bunny from being eaten! 😱We saw No wildflowers today but we did see a couple green mountainsides about 4 miles in. I haven’t done this loop for awhile and it was nice to get back on it. You can’t get away from all the burn but I still really enjoy being in the Supes!! Of course remembering many previous Supes hikes and planning future ones is always on the menu! 😁Always enjoy hiking with Wally and the great temps and almost constant breeze made it for a very enjoyable outing! Good times!!
Thanks Wally! Like HAZ, you rock!

A morning stroll with Denny to beat the heat. With the forecast warming up we hit the trail early and the breeze provided us with a cool hike. Black Mesa loop has a lot of burn but the recent rains are producing a nice green carpet. We kept a decent pace and saw several people out enjoying the trail on a weekday.
Thanks for coming out Denny.

With the summer oven starting up soon, I thought I would sneak in one more loop in the Western Supes.

I arrived at the trailhead just before 6am. The lots was empty except for 1 car. I did the loop clockwise - heading up Second Water to Black Mesa and then back via the Dutchman.

The lack of rain lately is evident as I recall this area was as green as Ireland with the winter rains. Now, it's dried up and very, very grassy. All of the brittlebush and other blooms are gone with the exception of the now blooming saguaros. A few prickly pear holding on as well.

No snakes (bummer), tons of lizards and these interesting black/white bees that were buzzing all along the trail almost the entire hike.

The weather was very pleasant for most of the hike. It started feeling a little toasty towards the end, but still not hot.

I came across my first human as I was hiking up the last 1/4 mile to the trailhead. I also came across a horse rider heading out as well.

I very nice loop with plenty of solitude, beautiful scenery and fresh air.

The trail is in really good shape from start to finish.

1045 start. I queued up a nice easy loop hike from the Needle Vista lot to Hackberry Spring, up to Garden Valley and back via Second Water trail and the Horse Lot.

Then I got silly and added a second loop with an off trail trek across Black Mesa to Second Water Canyon, which pretty much negated the little saunter I had in mind.

The view east from the top of Black Mesa almost made it worth the effort. While in Second Water Canyon I came across some old pipes and a spring box that I didn’t expect to see.

It was chilly out with clear skies, just a wisp of breeze. Didn’t see many people today.

Hike to Black Top Mesa incorporating the Black Mesa Loop in a clockwise direction. Passed Wally just after leaving the trailhead. That’s twice in a week! :y:

1145 start. Slept in. Got caught up in a good book before getting off my duff and and out to the trailhead. That probably worked out better, though; it was chilly and a bit hazy this morning. It was gorgeous in the afternoon.

Pressed for time, I didn’t take a break until Bull Pass. I debated turning around there, but decided I could get to the top and finish before darkness set in. Proceeded up to the top for those special views. Headed over to the SE corner to check out the petroglyphs, but the light wasn’t right. I couldn’t see anything. Returned to Bull Pass and took a second break for a very late lunch before returning to the trailhead on Dutchman.

Finished a few minutes after five and was rewarded with a spectacular sunset on the drive home. Great day on the trails on a gorgeous afternoon.

Two vehicles in the lot, one familiar, when I arrived. 0610 start on a pleasant morning. Headed out in CCW direction. Saw Wally cruising by the other way near Parker Pass. He was out for his usual. I was hoping for 9 before 9:30, but did much better coming in at 0906, probably the fastest I've been around that loop.

I don't remember many hikes that I've been on in June from FW trailhead. In fact, I don't remember any. Our most pleasant lead in to summer is about to end, though.

Gorgeous morning, but getting warm at the finish.

Took a stroll and added Black mesa into the loop. Didn't see another hiker until starting back. The weather was nice and the trails not too busy. Found a new way to strain an ankle by catching my heal and overextending it forward. Hurt like a turn but seems to be healing much faster. Hobbled back to the trailhead by 10:15am.

I have been wanting to try this hike for a while, and today turned out to be the day to do it. I got the idea for this from a hike that @azhiker456 did last fall.

This was basically the Black Mesa Loop with sidetrips to four peaks along the way:
1) Hackberry Mesa
2) Black Mesa 2850
3) Peak 3097
4) Yellow Peak

From the First Water TH, I went to the horse lot, and then took the Hackberry Spring Trail. Once I got close to Hackberry Mesa, I went off-trail up the SW side of the mesa. It was a bit steep in places, but not bad. I enjoyed the views on the mesa, and then descended SE at first and then more south to go through Garden Valley down to the Second Water Trail My descent was easier than the ascent.

Once on the Second Water Trail, I went to the Black Mesa Trail, and took it up to Black Mesa 2850. This is the highest point on topo maps of Black Mesa, but it looks to me like the highpoint of the mesa is on the west side.

I then descended from Black Mesa, and went up to Peak 3097. It was a gentle grade up to Peak 3097, but there was knee high grass (or higher in some places) with ankle busting rocks underneath, so the going was fairly slow. Views were nice atop Peak 3097, and I had a lunch break there.

I descended back to the Black Mesa Trail and then busted up the south slopes of Yellow Peak. This was the most challenging of the four peaks, but it was a fun climb up. I enjoyed the views at the summit, and then went back down to the Black Mesa Trail. From there, I made my way to the Dutchman Trail, which I took back to the First Water TH.

I enjoyed hiking to these peaks -- Black Mesa was my least favorite, and it would be hard to say which of the other 3 that I liked the best.

The hike back on the Dutchman Trail was a bit of a death march, and was my least favorite part of the hike.

Day 2 of our Boulder Canyon expedition. The general consensus was that people were pretty tired from the hike in (one opted to stay behind on account of sore knees and less than optimal weather). So of the 3 possible day trips; Battleship mountain, Black Top Mesa, and Weaver's Needle we opted for the easiest; Black Top Mesa.

Unfortunately, while I did download the route for the hike in/out I forgot to download the day trip routes so navigation was going to be a bit of a challenge. I did have both digital and paper topos so we went for it.

We weren't sure if there was an established trail to the top (or if it was bushwhacking) so when we got to a relatively gradual approach we went for it. This is how we managed to do Black Top Mesa "the hard way".

The going was not difficult initially with the ground a bit crumbly from the recent (and occasionally continuing) rain showers. We were able to manage about half the ascent very quickly before it started to get a bit scrambly. At this point we consulted our maps and seeing how far we had come figured it would be easier to keep going than try to go back and find an easier way.

The loose gravel slope turned into more or less continuous granular stone that required the use of hands as well as feet but was quite grippy and otherwise not difficult to climb. There were smooth and generally loose black colored boulders in increasing concentration as we approached the summit. These were a much more prone to getting kicked or pulled down the slope than the other material and we made it a point to avoid using them as holds and spaced out a bit after a near miss.

The weather began to turn sour again with hail an sleet joining in with the rain. At this point we were very neat to the top and the difficulty level increased again. The final push definitely strayed into class 4 climbing territory. We were not equipped to do actual rock climbing so we took shelter in a nook to wait for the weather to let up and to scope out the best route forward.

After eating some snacks and waiting for a break in the weather we went for it. The first attempt ran into a dead end and backtracking but the 2nd found a relatively easy way up. The face had a convenient ledge so we were able to break up the scramble into 2 sections with everyone piling onto the ledge before the final ascent to the top. The last stretch had another of those loose giant black boulders in the perfect position for a handhold. Avoiding it made for a challenging obstacle.

Having got to the top we immediately found a campsite and established trail which ended up leading down the north (rather than south) side of the mesa (so much for re remembering roughly which way the route went). We took this trail and looped back to our basecamp for an afternoon of card playing out of the weather (which finally cleared up that evening).

Despite the accidental nature this was actually are really interesting and fun little off trail ascent. The views of Weavers Needle on the way up were excellent ad the mesa provided a good 360 degree vantage point. If I were in the area in the future with a willing group and the weather were drier I would definitely do Black Rock Mesa "the hard way" again.

Everybody on Haz has been through the Garden Valley area a jillion times, so I'll skip the hike description, and just tell you about the Superstition Fire damage I found along my Black Mesa loop.

My plan was to not only hike up to the Black Mesa “summit”, but to traverse the entire Black Mesa ridgeline, then climb Hackberry Mesa, before taking some trails along First Water Creek that I had not been on before. More mileage, more AEG, and two different perspectives on the damage wrecked on Garden Valley by Superstition Fire. 👨🏻‍🚒

Between First Water TH and the 104/236 junction was burned quite thoroughly.

Second Water Trail #236 crosses two branches of First Water Creek. The area between the branches was devastated. Ironically, the ½ mile climb from the second crossing up to Garden Valley was untouched by the Superstition Fire. That’s the thing I’ve noticed about hiking burn areas: Wildfire tends to skip around. When the Forest Service says a wildfire has burned “x acres”, what they really mean is that the fire’s perimeter contained that many acres, not that all of those acres were destroyed. 🤔

Garden Valley also got hit bad: I saw one large cluster of chain fruit cholla that had nothing left but black stubs. (Chain fruit cholla can grow to to 15 ft. tall and 6 ft. diameter.)

Near the high point of Black Mesa Trail #241, I made the short off trail climb 100 ft. up to the Black Mesa ridgeline. When hiking, it’s always a good to look behind you: I’m glad I did, because there was an amazing view of Weavers Needle framed by dozens & dozens of surviving saguaro: [ photo ] .

I found it slow going navigating the jumble of boulders on the western edge of Black Mesa; movement was much smoother 100-150 ft. to the east. Black Mesa was one of the last areas to be affected by the Superstition Fire, so damage was particularly spotty. I can say though that two things will survive any fiery apocalypse: cockroaches and catclaw. 😖

I followed the Black Mesa ridgeline north for 1½ miles as it peaked, then gradually descended back to Second Water Trail #236. As I hoped, Black Mesa did indeed have good, relatively high angle, views of the damage in Garden Valley, particularly where the Superstition Fire burned out at the base of Hackberry Mesa. Also nice views northeast, past Tugboat and Geronimo Head to Four Peaks.

I wasn’t too tired yet, but looking up at the rocky approach to Hackberry Mesa, I decided to skip it. I hiked west, back into Garden Valley on Second Water Trail #236: Burn to my left, unburned to my right.

I cut a ⅓ of a mile across Garden Valley on a faint trail that may have been from horses, or may have been from fire crews digging line. Near the arch, I picked up the well-travelled, but as yet unnumbered trail that descends towards Hackberry Spring.

A ¼ mile south of the Hackberry Spring signs, if you look up and to your left, at the top of the yellow hills, you can just make out the Garden Valley arch. On the slope between the arch and trail were reddish orange swathes from several retardant drops. I didn’t see any Superstition Fire burn damage, so I guess it was in case the fire either burned west over the hills, or north from First Water Ranch.

The slick rock of First Water Creek had several small pools. I walked right over some retardant as I approached First Water Ranch’s windmill, corral and shed. No burn damage along the trail or in the facilities, but climbing up from the ranch along FR 1455 to the First Water Horse Lot was torched. 🔥

I felt okay when I finished my Black Mesa hike, but HOLY COW was my knee stiff & sore that evening. I could barely move the next 48 hours! I think I’ll take it easy with a Shaw Butte hike Christmas week ...
