CCW loop from the P.A. Seitts TH without my back brace. I made a side trip up the Overlook Trail to visit Mrs. SloFolks bench before starting the loop. My original intent was to do 7-8 miles today but I started later than planned and had to 86 the Go John Trail from the loop. It got very warm when the sun came out. This is December, right?

Saw 1 hiker, 1 biker, 3 equestrians, and 2 doggos who were both very good boys.

My post surgery PT has been kicking my butt and I've been too sore to hike. I finally got out this morning and did a close to home CCW lasso loop starting from the P.A. Seitts TH. Quite a bit slower than what I used to do this in, but I'm thrilled that I made it 5 miles w/o my back brace.

Saw one trail runner and one equestrian. Beautiful weather.

Another north valley hike on nicely groomed trails. Following rain last night ending this morning, we got going to cloudy breezy conditions. Trails were wet with some mud but easily avoided. Some light rain fell while we were hiking.
We hiked up Go John trail until we were into the clouds. Pretty cool.
The flora out here looks good and green, especially the saguaros.
Saw some deer, bunnies and birds.
Fun hike. Coffee, breakfast, and a quick stop to visit college friends after the hike. Thanks Kelly.

CCW lasso loop starting from the new Legacy Trailhead (formerly the eastern extension Slate TH).
New parking spots are just off Cave Creek Rd. and Surrey Drive. Quick 90 foot climb up to the Surrey Hills saddle then a 200 foot drop down to the creek flood plain.

Note: Once you cross the creek the entirety of the Military Trail and portions of the Flat Rock and Slate Trails are on State Trust Land and a permit is required.

The cottonwood bosque areas along the creek are starting to show some fall colors. Only saw a handful of other hikers and it was very warm at the finish. Probably should have started an hour or so earlier.

I never got comfortable with "Picker" on HAZ so it's back to LosDosSloFolks. Cathy never really left me and will always be a part of me. It just took me a little time to understand that.

Cool mornings have finally arrived and it felt nice to get out in the desert. This close to home quickie never disappoints. Everything is still very dry but still looks healthy. I look forward to the creek flowing again.

Plan A was to go to Flagstaff today to leave some of MrsSloFolks ashes along the Walnut Canyon section of the AZT. I couldn't find any takers to go hike with me and didn't feel like going alone so this was Plan B.

It was cool enough this morning to head over to Go John Canyon on the State Trust Land east of the Cave Creek Regional Park. Cathy always liked this area along with the P.A. Seitts Preserve. Temps were nice for the duration and I had the place to myself. I think summer is on the way out. The creek crossing is getting overgrown with invasive Tamarisk (Salt Cedar).

It's going to be a big task to eradicate it.

Solo hike close to home. Early start and my first mile was in the dark and it was downright chilly at the creek. The desert was still putting on a decent bloom-a-palooza and the creek was running strong.

As I was descending on the Quartz Trail I saw a mountain bike coming up from below. He was really movin' and was still sitting down. I thought what a beast that guy is until I heard the whine of the motor on his e-bike. Those aren't allowed on this trail system but I guess the rules don't apply to everyone.

Second hike using my new shoes and they felt pretty good. They have a nylon shank which really helped out on the rocky sections of the trail. I arrived home just as Mrs. SloFolks was getting up. It's been a little while since I've been on a trail and it felt good and I'm pleased with my pace after the layoff.

Wildflowers Observation Substantial
I was surprised to see how long the spring bloom has lasted up here. The Brittlebush, Desert Marigold, Creosote, Hedgehog, Prickly Pear, Flat Top Buckwheat, and Ocotillo were all going strong.

After breakfast we decided to cross the creek on foot while we still could before the rain to get in one of our close to home loops. The creek was running pretty strong but with waterproof shoes we had no problem finding a way across.

Wildflowers were really starting to pop but no Brittlebush yet even though the desert is loaded with it. It will be a sea of yellow up here in a week or two.

Met a fellow named Craig on the Go John Trail who was with the Desert Foothills Land Trust and we hiked with him for a couple of miles and had some good conversation. We also got in some great petting with two good horses and two good dogs.

A Mystery Solved

The highlight of the hike was solving the mystery of a spring box that @tibber found during a hike with Cathy, @trekkin_gecko , and @LindaAnn . The box had a 8" diameter pipe in the bottom that made no sense at all.

We did some sleuthing and found the pipe exiting the ground in some nearby trees and we followed it to an old underground pump house just off the flood plain of the creek. The 12 by 12 foot pump house had a well and a kerosene engine to pump water up to the box for horses and cattle. The old corral on the Military Trail is nearby so this made sense. You don't need that much pump and pipe to fill a 8 foot shallow cement box so I'm guessing there was also some irrigating going on for crops back in the day. The word "well" is even on one of the HAZ topo maps of the area on Route Scout.

Solo training/conditioning hike using a backpack and heavier boots. The extra weight combined with the humidity kicked my

. I added the little Menk Overlook Nature Trail at the end.

This area is going to be a bloom-a-palooza in very short order. Loads of poppies on the Go John Trail but they were all closed up due to the cloud cover. The rain in tomorrows forecast should be great timing for the flowers.

Linda invited me to the hike with Cathy and Kelly, thank you. It was a breezy start for sure and that breezy would become brisk from time to time throughout our hike. The area was very green of course with a couple greens. I danced by the large mirror of the equestrian corral... to the girls bemusement. I did it on the way back too.

Our main challenge of the day was crossing the creek. We walked upstream a bit, Kelly perplunked a large rock so that we would have two to use which worked great. We admired the stately saguaros and checked out the interesting trough with large pipe inside of it before veering east on the Military Trail. We stopped to admire a sea of phyllite. On the distant hills the brittlebush looks like ground cover. It's gonna be a golden spring. Saguaros, phyllite and brittlebush groundcover would catch our attention off and on during the hike. We enjoyed the smoothness of the Flat Rock Trail where at the saddle we encountered the first hikers of the day.

We headed south and east on the Quartz Trail keeping an eye on the outcropping in the distance. And with Kelly, what does one do with an outcropping above the trail? Of course, you climb it so Linda and I followed suit. It was nothing major but girls gotta have fun. As we got down we encountered another group of hikers before reaching the Slate Trail. This a great little trail as you feel like you're walking on flat lava; even though its phyllite which you can see around you in several areas along the way. The phyllite pieces are part of the ground here; so much so that even the grass can't seem to grow through it. Pretty soon Linda says "bike" and I turn around and that biker is quite a ways back... how did she hear it? She did that a couple times today.

Before heading back across the creek, Cathy took us to the Lake. It's kind of an inlet, fairly shallow but long. And then we checked out the big colored rocks (mostly black or green) in the dry creek bed. But now we had to get across the creek again so we went to the same area we had crossed earlier. Before going back to the trailhead Cathy took us up Louis Menk Nature Trail to the Overlook. It's a pleasant little climb and has some pretty great 360 views from the top. It was quite windy so we didn't stay long. We ventured around and back down for the last little bit back to the Trailhead.

And now on to the Grotto Cafe where we finished off our day with good company and food and fun ambience.

Met up with Angela, Kelly, and Cathy at Casa LosDosSloFolks around 0930. Said hello to Greg, and since there was no getting around my truck in the driveway, I drove everyone to the trailhead. Not too cool, but quite breezy.

Started in the Seitts Preserve and headed north, I believe on the Military Trail. Some water in Cave Creek, but we rearranged some rocks to make for an easier crossing. Kelly threw a rock at me, splashing my pants, but karma got her a moment later with a wet shoe in the creek. Healthy looking saguaros in this area, much better than the specimens on SoMo.

Turned onto Flat Rock trail, which had some neat geology. Then turned onto the aptly named Quartz Trail. Spent a few minutes climbing around on a large quartz outcropping. Finished the loop on the Slate Trail. Again, neat geology. Looked around along the creek before crossing back over.

Cathy opted for us to tack on the Louis Menk Nature Trail up to the little lookout. Good views in all directions from up top. After we finished the hike, we headed over to Grotto Cafe for a tasty lunch. Good to see Angela and Kelly again, and nice to finally meet Cathy in person. Fun day!

Mrs. SloFolk here. This is my first triplog so bear with me. Linda invited me to join her, Kelly, and Angela for a hike of my choice up here in Cave Creek. I chose the P.A. Seitts Preserve and connector trails in the Cave Creek Regional Park. We hit the TH at 9:45 for a sunny but windy start.

They let me set the pace and I was able to do my personal best for distance since my return to hiking after my long illness.

We ran into a few hikers and bikers; all said good morning and seemed like nice people...but you never really know.

After the hike we had lunch at the Grotto Cafe in downtown Cave Creek. Linda gave me her key fob to get something I had forgotten in her truck. I spent 5 minutes trying to open a very similar truck...just not hers.

I had a great time with three wonderful ladies and thank you all for making the long drive up to see me.

I've had this one drawn up for awhile.
Starting at the Black Mountain TH, first up is Black Mountain. It was a nice cool climb to the top, with only a handful of people passed.

Next up was the clandestine neighborhood walk past Casa de LosDos to get over to the beginning of the Slate Trail.

A side trip up Louis Menk Nature Trail and then an off-trail jaunt to the old Cave Creek Cemetery before getting back on the Slate Trail. Cave Creek had a light flow as I crossed it.

The Slate Trail to get over to the CCRP parking area is nothing to write home about. The closer I got to the parking area, the worse the horse stench got. It reminded me of the mule corridor in the Grand Canyon

The Overton Trail gets better the farther you get away from the TH, all the way to where it intersects the Go John Trail.

On the Go John Trail I spotted a couple of deer grazing on the hillside. Views to the east included snow capped Humbolt, Four Peaks, and many Mazy high points.

Flat Rock was the last of the new trail tread on the day. It also offered some nice views.

Back in LosDos territory, I opted for more of a stealth route through his neighborhood.

CW loop starting from the P.A. Seitts TH. I was the first car at the TH and temp was 44*. After just one mile it was the warmest 60 degrees I've ever felt. The sun was just so intense it felt like 90. Funny how that works. I only ran into 2 people and they had both left from the VC to the east. I was surprised to see 9 cars at my TH when I was done. Where the heck did they all go?
The desert up here still looks nice but I'd love to see some rain sooner than later.

This is a close to home favorite. CCW lasso loop starting from the P.A. Seitts TH @6:30. Cathy wanted to try this again after almost 2 years of absence. This was the longest hike she has attempted since her transplant. Mornings are tough for her in the way of energy but she got it done.

Her blood type hasn't switched over completely yet so her red blood cells aren't delivering oxygen to the muscles properly.

Late afternoon hikes seem to be better for now she thinks.

The weather was perfect. A nice breeze was icing on the cake. We saw a handful of other hikers and the largest jackrabbit either of us had ever seen...almost got a photo. We stopped at the high point for some ZipFizz and some of those Costco dried tangerines. Dang, those are good. @tibber gave me some earlier this year on a hike in Sedona and I now have a $30.00 a week habit. Thanks Angela.

The desert was green and lush. The recent rain did some damage to the trails but the lack of dust and the wonderful smell of petrichor made up for it. Later this week or sometime soon I would like to do the 7 mile extended version of this hike by adding part of the Go John Trail into the mix. Very pretty up here right now.
