| no partners | | Good day for an eastern SoMo loop, despite waking up with a mild head cold. Headed up Marcos De Niza. Cool and breezy, which was the theme of the day. The trail seems to be completely marked with the new stickers now. Saw no other hikers on Marcos. Weird. Saw a coyote.
Continued up Guadalupe Ridge, which is the most fun part of this loop. Scrambled through the rocks and enjoyed the solitude. Saw nobody else until after I had passed the junction with Corona East. Hazy air, could not see the White Tanks at all.
Back east on National. Boring but easy. Saw one biker.
Headed down Hidden Valley. Saw one large group of about a dozen hikers. Saw two other hikers who looked like this was their first day outside. Ever. They were “lost” in trying to figure out the route. I gave them a cheerful hello and never slowed down. They’ll figure it out.
Continued down the wash from Hidden Valley, which is also a fun scramble. I always wish that section lasted longer.
Once I reached National again, I headed up Mormon Loop and Javelina Canyon. Now the people started. Most seemed like tourists or the resolution crowd. Saw one guy on a bike go pumpkin over teakettle on Javelina. He didn’t move for a few seconds, but was standing up by the time I reached him. Lots of scrapes and a cracked helmet, but he assured me he was okay.
Took the full length of Ridgeline, which is still poorly marked. Passed one couple moving at a snails pace who seemed exasperated with each other. He said they’d gone a quarter mile in thirty minutes. She had no plans to move any faster than that.
Followed the Beverly-Pima Connector back to Pima. Not my favorite trail, but it served its purpose. Good workout loop with a lot of variety. |
