Started the hike by parking in the lot for the golf club and then walking a quarter mile down to the trailhead. A couple of cars did just park in the street near the trailhead, but at some point the homeowners will probably start to complain. Some newly built houses around the trailhead, make sure you pick the right entrance and direction. I started in the dark and ended up following the wrong trail for a bit. So go almost all the way to the security gate for the new subdivision, look for the Upper Javelina trail sign and make sure you go to the left and not to the right.

I like beginning here because it avoids that extremely boring 1 mile stretch of walking through Wild Burro wash to begin and end every hike. Trail starts climbing almost immediately from the road and it's a pretty stretch of desert hiking. Follow that 1.5 miles and you intersect with the Wild Mustang trail. Take that for 2.5 miles and right around the 4 mile mark start to look for the trail that leads to Peak 4416. Trail is pretty obvious and well cairned. Couple of loose sections, but you can make good time. Summiting the peak requires a tiny bit of easy Class III scrambling, but not much.

Hot and muggy, so jumped into the pool the second I got home. Nice way to get in a decent 9 mile hike and be home by 8:30AM.

Got a dental implant two weeks ago and was forced by my dentist to lay low until this weekend. Looking for someplace that might be warmer than heading up any of the canyons in the Catalinas.

Got within 100 yards of 4416. The cloud line was at 4000 feet this morning and I made it up about 50 yards of the rock face that you need to scramble up before I bailed. Everything was like a sheet of ice and super slick, could have made it up but it would have been dicey coming down.

Met up with Matt at the Wild Burro TH at 0700 and got hiking right away. Cloudy, but warmish, and no breeze. Made the large loop clockwise, with a side trip to Peak 4416. That was a scramble up large granite boulders following a cairned route. One short section of the descent made me butt scoot since I didn’t like the steep angle of the rock. Grippy though.

Some filtered sun as the day progressed, but a decent breeze on the higher ridges. Had lunch near the windmill/water tank/corral area. A leftover American Wagyu ribeye from last night made for an excellent lunch.

The Wild Burro Loop Trail and the Ridgeline Trail are probably my favorite part of this loop. Alamo Springs Trail was a little rockier than I remembered. Only saw a handful of hikers, mostly near the trailhead. A few rabbits, a squirrel, and some deer prints. Nice day, happy to get some good mileage, and always good to see Matt again!

Linda came up with this one and asked if I would like to tag along. With stats and weather in perfect alignment, I instantly signed on. Morning came and we hit the trail at 0700, with me somehow still sleeping. I started this hike trailing and basically held that position the rest of the day, just following Linda where ever it was that she went - much like a lost dog. Don't tell her, but if she would have somehow given me the slip, I'd still be out there trying to find my way back to the truck.
Back to the hike, it was with few exceptions perfect weather with very little direct sun and sufficient breeze. The trail in general gained elevation at a very pleasant rate - aside from this one part where Linda dragged me up some God forsaken, boulder heap. This is an interesting loop as you can see where you're going and where you've been the whole way, It's like a race track running around the inner perimeter of this big canyon. Though the mileage was on the longer side, the elevation was low enough that sniveling was minimal today. All in all just a really nice day out hiking; not too strenuous, not too easy, a nice area that is largely new to me, yakking with Linda. All good things.

Thanks Linda for the invite and the company. Top notch as always.

This looked interesting and decided to check out this peak. Could be a contender for another one of my favorite hikes in the park. Got out at the crack of dawn and went straight up the wash instead of staying entirely on the Wild Burro Trail. Made decent time and got to the turn off to the peak about 1:20 into the hike. According to my GPS the turn off was about 3.9 miles from the parking lot at the Wild Burro trailhead. Just enough route finding and scrambling to keep it interesting, was able to follow cairns all the way up and down. From the turn off at Wild Mustang it only took me 10 minutes or so to summit the peak. Signed the summit log and noticed it sees maybe a half dozen or so summits a year.

When I looked up the summit in Scott Surgent's new book he claims that this peak is also the highpoint for the city of Marana. So I can add this to my list of city highpoints.

Chris and I had a late start and got to the trailhead around 12:40 pm. We met and chatted with 5 women hikers in a group and 2 different mountain bikers. We overshot the junction because my Samsung S10 phone was not showing our GPS location in the PeakBagger app. I had to do a hard reset and after turning it back on, we discovered that we overshot the junction by 1/4 mile, so had to backtrack a bit. I believe I had some kind of phone hardware failure, which was quite annoying. Hope this is not a problem again. Anyway, we were expecting to do a 0.4 mile bushwhack from the Wild Mustang trail to the summit but realized there was a good trail that went basically all the way to the top. Near the top there were a few cairns but not quite enough. We managed to lose the trail in a few areas, and just ended up doing some rock climbing to get to the summit. We summited just before 4 pm but we probably spent nearly an hour talking with the various people we encountered. We probably spent 30 minutes at the peak, signed a registry at the top, and then started heading down. We also saw a painted rock on the summit that was purposely left there by someone with a label of 'Green Valley Rocks'. On the way down we didn't see any other hikers or bikers and got down about 30 minutes after sunset. We decided to do a quick tour of the Ritz Carlton resort, dining area, heated pool, etc. What a wonderful looking resort. Someday I'd like to stay there. All in all, this was a great hike that I might want to repeat someday when I run out of other new stuff to do.
