| partners | | As instructed by our hike organizer, Kelly and I were at the Warpaint trailhead by 0745. However, he did not realize that typing “Warpaint 7:45” (I have proof) actually meant going to THAT Warpaint, and maybe Corona wasn’t even the trail he thought it was. Hike organizer responsibilties were quickly reassigned to someone else.
Once we all met up at the same place, we headed across the flats over to the drainage I had suggested for our ascent. I’ve hiked up this drainage a few times, and always thought it was fun. Apparently, another local thinks so too, because all brush was nicely cut back the entire way up. Most of the way is a fun scramble, needing hands in a few places. Would not be fun if raining, the rocks are smooth. Even after reaching Corona, we stayed in the wash all the way to the trail for Gila Valley Lookout. Crossing through the Chinese Wall has some nice geology.
Steep, but short, climb on the trail up to the lookout. Caught our breath for a few moments, then took the lookout trail over to National. National east to the top of Corona, then down Corona. Got to see the new lazy switchbacks on Corona, the parks dept has been busy pushing rocks around!
Fun morning, although quite warm for February. Good to hike with Chumley & Kelly again. |
