Still waiting for this stupid cold to go away, but managed to find the motivation to go for a spin, even before having coffee! Started from FINS (because I didn't feel like driving somewhere else), rode over to Estrella Foothills Community Park on the Maricopa trail (Sunrise), then Pirate trails - Park Ave, Rum Runner, Jolly Roger, Doubloon, Park Ave to the EMRP Iron Ranger, then down to GNODS trails for a loop and quick way home. Saw 5 mountain bike riders and a few couples out walking their dogs.

Nice cloud cover and cool breezes this morning on Estrella Mountain Ranch trails. Started from Estrella Foothills Community Park on Pirate trails - Sunrise, Park Ave, Rum Runner, Grasky, UP Yonder, UPside Down, RoundUP to Estrella Parkway and Sendero Drive. Tunnel under Estrella to Lucero trails - Tunnel trail to Road Runner, Coyote Creek counter clockwise, upper Recluse, Tarantula down, Coyote Creek counter clockwise, Tarantula up, Black Widow down, Thrasher, Cotton Lane. Crossed Cotton Lane to Dog Trails - Roxy Road to Estrella circle. Then over to North Lake with a water bottle refill at the Yacht Club. Corgett Wash back to Sunrise trail to the Community Park. Ran into my MTB buddy Victor on top of Tarantula trail in Lucero. Lots of people around the lake. Nice to do a long ride. Plenty tired on the way back to the park.

Recent rains have roughed up the Estrella Mountain Ranch Pirate trails. Black Beard now, technically, goes through to Queen Annes Revenge. Incredible amount of work completed by the Estrella Trails Group on Black Beard. Still some work to get to the finish. Ran into the same two mountain bikers multiple times, they were getting too far all that fast. Made sure they knew the easiest way back to the parking lot. Also saw 3 other bikers. No hikers today. Felt hot. I was tired, lost my mojo. Felt like I was dragging an anchor up the climbs behind me. Very windy.

So nice NOT to have to go out early to beat the heat! Did a brunch ride today on the Pirate Trails in Estrella Mountain Ranch. Started from the Estrella Foothills Community Park and worked my way north on the powerline road to Jumpline trail, then Bootlegger, Grasky, Black Beard (with new activity!) out and back to Grasky, all of Queen Anne's Revenge, Jolly Roger, side trip out the the EMRP Iron Ranger, Doubloon, Rum Runner, and Park Ave back to the Community Park. Met up with one other rider at the EMRP Iron Ranger, Dan, on a Trek Slash 8. Just a perfect day on the trails.

No sign of the Bagel Bunch (over at Rio Vista :-s Dang it!) or anyone for that matter, except one lone, spunky little viper at the start. My expectations were met that these trails would probably be way more fun on a mountain bike. Reminded me a lot of the San Tan Mountain Regional or the Casa Grande Mountain Parks. Mostly flat desert with a bunch of sweeping turns. The eastern terminus of Homestead was a tease, especially after the constant uphill through all that monotonous desert, sand and a brisk headwind that didn't help. But wow! Corgett Wash looks as if it allows some great access to some of the craggy highpoints in this northwestern part of the range. Definitely will be back, especially if there are ways to get closer to the actual mountains with a wheeler and not have to hike all those filler miles.

With all the rain on Sunday and Monday I was anxious to hit the sandy EMRP trails that I LOVE so much. Had pickleball class in Surprise this morning, which delayed my start until about 11:30. Air was cool, but the Sun was HOT, gusty winds made it nice. Started at the Estrella Foothills Community Park and took Park Ave over to the iron ranger. Crossover trail to Pedersen and followed that counter clockwise south and then east. Then ran Homestead downhill back to Pedersen north to Gadsden east to Toothaker. Toothaker to Pedersen to Crossover and then east on Jolly Roger and Doubloon to Brethren's Court and Rum Runner down to Park Ave to the parking lot. Saw one hiker on Rum Runner. Great day to be out and about!

Midday hike in the Estrella Foothills. Got to the Estrella Foothills Community Park around 3pm. The plan was to hike in on Park Ave, do Rum Runner and then do some exploring of the area. There are numerous trails in this area, many of them unsigned. And unfortunately the number of unsigned trails are growing.

From the TH, I followed the road to where Park Ave turns off and becomes a single track (.16 miles). The carsonite marker indicating this turn had been torn down. :( Deliberate force had to be used to destroy this marker. They are not easy to tear. I was able to find the marker and prop it up, but it is at best a short term solution. I continued on Park Ave to the beginning of Rum Runner and was happy to see the trail marker still standing. However, following Rum Runner to its end, I was met with more destruction! The carsonite marker at this nexus (which gave directions for 4 different trails) was also torn down. In addition some very unique trail creations were destroyed. ](*,) I was able to prop up the trail sign (temporary at best), but the hard work of someone’s creative expressions are destroyed.

Why would someone do that! The trails in this area are fantastic in their own right. BUT, the character and uniqueness that goes along with some of these trails makes them that much more special. Because of the creativity, I had come to think of this area as the Cave Creek of the west (valley).

From the nexus I followed the JR (Jolly Roger) for .15 miles before following a user trail that heads to the east. This track went for about .25 miles before ending at a road that went up the side of hill. Followed the road to the top to discover that this has been dubbed “Tortuga Island”. Another creative person had put in a lot of work “routering” the sign. I then followed another unnamed trail that wrapped around the hill and took off to the east. Very nice single track. I don’t believe it is an official part of the trail system, but some one put in some work in creating it. There are two wash crossings. One is bedded with stone work for the crossing and the other has new drain pipes laid that act as a bridge crossing. This use trail eventually ties back into the Jolly Roger. I took the Jolly Roger back west to where it met the dual track (road) and then followed the road to the Stargate and took that back to the TH.

Nice hike. Really enjoy this area. Saddened by the wanton destruction. Quail and prairie dogs abounded. Saw 6 prairie dogs! 1 hiker and 10 bikers. On two different occasions I saw dads riding with their children. The kids ranged from 5-10. Cute! I didn’t know they made mountain bikes that small.
