Second hike of the day (after Court House loop). Got to the TH around 6am. Wanted to hit Steamboat first so I took Wilson Canyon to the Jim Thompson juncture and then took TH JT up to a user trail that tackles Steamboat from the east side. I expected this user trail to be a little further along, but it occurred as soon as I finished the initial ascent up the JT. The user trail is well established and easy to follow. I thought it was going to be an easy, direct scramble to the first deck, but just prior to reaching it, there was a 10 foot section of vertical elevation. There were indentations and holds at this spot and it was obvious that more physically fit individuals had gone straight up. I opted to swing north to find a more comfortable approach. After swinging around this one spot it was a very easy climb to reach the first deck. The views were awesome. Since I was on a time schedule, I didnt play around too much on top. I eye-balled the approach to the second deck, but didn't investigate too closely. From what I've read, it sounds as if it may be outside my comfort zone, but I will have to find out some other day. Going down was not as easy as I thought it would be. I had an idea of going down the north side and hitting Wilson Canyon from the back end to make a loop. The slopes on the sandstone are deceptive. It looks as if it will be a smooth descent until you hit a section that is a little too vertical. With time, I might have been able to make a north side descent, but I was on a time crunch so I gradually made my way back to the east side where I made my climb. I hit the JT trail and took that back to Wilson Canyon which I then proceeded to do. Doing this trail seems like an afterthought, but it is a nice trail and worth the effort. This is a well shaded trail so it is ideal year round. There are a multiple dry creek crossings (though I did see water trickling in a few spots). The trail is well established and easy to follow. You will know when you reach the end because there will be a sign that says "end of trail".

Over all a very nice day of hiking with some beautiful views!

Bruce and I went on a World Class hike and witnessed spectacular views. Started off with a little off-trail to the best unnamed trail in Arizona. Albeit overcast t'was a joy. We hooked up with the Dam - if - i - no trail. Apparently easier to follow than the name suggests. The sun burned off the morning layer enhancing our views.

Next up was Steamboat! The approach is Cathedral Rock squared and tourist free. I forgot to ruin the experience this time around. The Aloha Boardwalk Deck wasn't in the cards again. My good buddy Bob would knock it out in a heartbeat.

We scratched plans for Wilson Canyon and headed straight for the grand finale on Wilson Mountain. Here we passed a half dozen groups. The highlight on route was the worlds meanest hissing gopher snake. Yawner finale views sealed the deal. The sleigh was homeward bound.

Cheers cheers and sandstone dreams in a roundabout kinna way!

I wanted to hit some new areas in Sedona, and visit a little known favorite of mine.

This is the first TH I've used in awhile that was paved. I could have washed the truck. ](*,) It was nice that we were able to park the vehicle at Midgley Bridge and use it as the hub for basically 3 hikes. We were able to resupply, so we didn't have to carry as much weight.

Good thing the clouds were out until 9am or else Tibber Bartel and Tibber Coan never would have finished this hike. We crossed under Midgely, crossed over Oak Creek and headed down Huckaby for a short distance. We then scrambled up a track that Joe had drawn up and made a beeline for the Unnamed trail on the way to Mitten Ridge and the start of the Damifino Trail.

That mile or so of trail that traverses the ridge and the beginning of Damifino, is one of the most beautiful sections of trail I've been on. I have no idea why it is not shown on any maps and is unnamed.

We completed the loop going past Grasshopper Point saying hi to Hanks relatives and back to Midgley to resupply. Next it was the scramble towards the top of Steamboat Rock. More pretty views and fun climbs to get close to the helm of the ship. It was the one of the first times I had a bit of fear in climbing. I was looking for a way up to the Helm and got to a point where Joe told me (from below me) not to look down. I couldn't help myself and got that feeling in my stomach that I had to wait to pass before going back down.

Next it was off to the Classic Wilson Mountain Trail. Both of us nursing Chest Colds, and Joe whining about no sleep the night before made this tougher than it should have been. We had a trail guard that tried to get Joe to turn around.

[ youtube video ]

Once passed the Trail Century, it was still a pretty good climb to the South Overlook. But well worth the effort.

Another great day on the trails. We are so lucky to have Sedona and the rest of the hiking playground, right in our back yard! Thanks for joining me Joe.

Matt and I drove up to Sedona early Saturday morning to join some friends from Flagstaff to run a giant loop through the Red Rock Secret Canyon Wilderness. We met at Midgley Bridge around 7:00am and took off on the Jim Thompson Trail, from here the route looked like this:

Jim Thompson - Brins Mesa - FR 152 - Vultee Arch - Sterling Pass - HWY 89A - North Wilson Mountain - Wilson Mountain

Beautiful day in Red Rock country. We originally planned on doing Woodchute, but the snow level looked pretty low in the Bradshaws so we audibled to Wilson Mountain. Trail up to First Bench from Midgley Bridge TH is awesome with great views, and enough of a grade to get you sweating without being a lung-burner.
The trail is basically a rivulet up close to First Bench, and a muddy & snowy disaster on top of First Bench. We followed a group of 3 up from First Bench about 1/2 mile from the junction (w/ North Wilson Mountain trail). They were wearing proper footwear, and I wasn't. We went about 200 yards past their turnaround point, and got tired of post-holing in the 3-foot-deep snow. It was also getting later in the day, and the storm looked to be on the way.
Also did part of the Wilson Canyon trail.
The best part of today, however, is the fact that I forgot my all-leather waterproofed boots at home. I even had my old boots in the car, but I took them out just before leaving the house. Luckily I was wearing some junky low-cuts, but unfortunately my feet got soaked because those well-ventilated low-cuts allowed water to go right in. I did remember my gaiters, however :sl: Walking through 3-foot-deep snow and deep mud in low-cuts is not an experience I ever want to repeat.

The canyon wasn't that enjoyable, and the overcast didn't help. Steamboat was more fun. I took pictures, but they don't look too good due to the overcast skies. Oddly, the best part of the day was stopping at the spring in Oak Creek and looking at the snow covered Coconino Sandstone cliffs.

Parked at Midgley Bridge on the 89A and did this hike along with Wilson Canyon Trail We went up Wilson Canyon Trail, passing the Jim Thompson trail conection at about the 0.6 mile point, to the cliff face where the views make the incline worth while.Back down to the intersection of Jim Thompson trail and along it, The view is more open on this trail and as you walk round the base of steamboat rock most of Sedona can be seen. Through a gateway and down to the new trailhead for Jim Thompson / Brins Mesa / Cibola / Jordan. We stopped for lunch on the return leg. We only met two people on the way out and three on the return trip apart from the crowds at the bridge.

Went up Wilson Mountain Trail past the junction w/ the spur to Wilson Canyon Trail about 1/4 mile, then over to the WCT. Went up WCT about 2/3 mile, then back down to the trailhead. Nice Arizona cypress forest on the WCT.
The trailhead is the parking lot to view the bridge, evidently. I was getting ready next to my car, wearing Vasque boots, an adventure hat, outdoors clothing, and a fancy-schmancy backpack so it was inevitable for some old guy to ask me, "you hiking up there?" Love it.

Wilson Canyon proved to be a nice warm-up for the climb up Steamboat as we weren't incredibly limber at 7:30 in the morning. I was surprised at the panoramic majesty to be found in Wilson Canyon as well. The climb up Steamboat was fun, although one section definitely pushed my comfort zone a little bit (on the way up and the way down). That being said, it turned out to be a solid personal achievement, and a quite gorgeous morning hike as well! I'll be rating this as a 5 because Steamboat Rock was sweet and although Wilson Canyon was more along a 4, I don't have a bit of a problem rounding it up!

Was a nice little hike with not many people on it after my husband ran the Sedona half marathon. The trail was a little bit muddy in spots but was nice to hike it. The creek had water in it with lot of little water falls. There even was a vendor selling tshirts and hats at the beginning of he trail. It climbs up thru the creek bottom till the end and then took the trail that goes up to the bottom of the walls of the cliffs. Just did he Wilson Canyon Trail.

Just hiked up and all around Steamboat Rock. It was cool and raining, so tourists weren't venturing out onto the trails. Great views. Only ventured a short way into Wilson Canyon. We'll tackle that one another day.
