Evening hike from Madera Canyon trailhead. Started on Super Trail and then used the waterline route to access Kent Springs Trail. Lots of deer out and browsing. Plenty of water at Sylvester Spring, and water in the creek at Kent Spring. Beautiful evening for this loop, and great views on Bog Springs Trail. Had the trails all to myself. Took waterline route back, reached trailhead after dark. Took some comet photos on the drive out, like many others were doing.

Drove down to Madera Canyon early to enjoy some coffee before doing a hike. I wasn't sure what I wanted to do, so drove around checking things out. As I drove through the Mt. Wrightson Picnic Area around 6 AM, there were lots of cars and people about, so I figured it was a hiking club group. Sure enough, it was a group from SAHC getting ready to do a hike. I couldn't believe it, but I spotted a familiar face, Bill Bens, and we chatted for a bit. I still am a member of the group, but with all my various age/injury related issues, I haven't done any hiking with them in a long time. I just don't want to become a liability for them on a club hike and ruin the outing. I do miss it however, to be honest. After that fun surprise encounter, I headed down to the Madera Picnic Area, enjoyed some coffee, then did some hiking. :)

I was last down there two weeks ago, and since then persistent storm/rain action have things greening up nicely. :D One big difference is the absolute explosion of Fairy Dusters in bloom! Wow! The main concentration was around the Proctor Road area. Really something to see right now. : wink :

It was a mighty fine day. :y:

Hiked a portion of Bog/Kent Springs Loop with Dad and Victoria.

For the first part of our Holiday road trip we went to Madera Canyon. For our first hike of the trip we planned to do Bog/Kent springs loop with the hope that the various springs and creeks would be running and provide some pretty scenery.

The hike did not go quite as I envisioned it. Dad struggled with rocky steps and ended up having to sit out most of the hike. This did not turn out too badly for him because while sitting still quietly he was able to observe a variety of wildlife (even more than we did going up the trail). We resolved to get him some trekking poles as there were many more hikes planned for the trip and continued on the Kent and Sylvester Springs before heading back.

Unfortunately, it seems we were too early in the season for water hikes. All of the creek beds were dry and the springs mostly a trickle. The wildlife did not disappoint though, we saw turkeys, ringtails, deer, and evidence of a black bear. The large quantities of bear scat got Victoria quite "Bearanoid" and she wanted to turn back before we reached Sylvester Spring. We never did see the bear but did notice that the Kent Springs Cabin appeared to be occupied as we went past. This hike had some respectable elevation gain, indeed many of the hikes in Madera Canyon have a good amount. This caused us to revise our plans as it was apparent that Dad would not fare any better on them.

We will have to return sometime in the future when we want to do some serious hikes, Old Baldy looks like it would be a good one.

Wanted to get back to the 100 Top Hikes list, and go out with Michelle. This was the perfect day for this hike! Weather was absolutely amazing. Lots of deer out today as well. Did a figure 8 loop off of Kent-Bog Spring, with Super Trail and another unnamed trail or two.

The trees and a benchmark were calling to I answered at 3 pm. Driving in I found a benchmark from ~1904 that I had scouted out. I decided I should go from the campground because it would make the route shorter with the fading sunlight. The uphill on the bog springs trail is a real calf burner. The sycamores at Bog Springs were very pretty. There was a canyon with intermittent water popping in and out of the ground. The canyon adjacent to it had very good flowing water and was a sight to see. Mount Wrightson glowed a bright orange during sunset. By the time I got back to the trailhead, it was dark out.
This was a fun trip. I'm glad I went. :)

did the bog/kent loop with a trip out to roger's rock.

started from amphitheater TH and took that spur out to main loop. There was actually still water in kent canyon, running in some spots with little pools.

route out to roger's rock is in predictably great shape. the big tree where the spur to the rock splits from the route up fern canyon fell. random. nice and green with the fern looking good early in the season. took a break on the rock - a great place to be

back to the main loop for the steep climb up to kent springs, i love this part of the loop. nice and shaded. great water flow in sylvester spring. nothing at kent spring. coming down bog there is maybe one downed tree - no issue at all to get over. went and checked bog spring - still water in the trough. i followed the pipe and found a loose leaky connection. tried to mess with it as best i could and i left it looking better than i found it but who knows how long that will last.

rest of the hike was just very pleasant.

I thought the canyon would be crowded for President's Day, but that wasn't the case. Trailhead temp was 51F, not cold enough to go shirtless. It was drier than I thought, but there was some puddles in the creek. I got lost by taking the wrong trail back to the car, but it wasn't too bad. I had camera issues, but I didn't see much anyway this trip.

We made it around the full loop this time. We head right at the fork 0.7mi in, rather than left. We love this hike as you get to see the forest and look out over the desert. Great hike if you're looking for touches of fall. I would imagine there's typically more water than what we saw, due to the drought this year. Typically pretty windy in the canyon and quite a bit cooler. Highly recommend this loop.

Didn't make it the whole loop today, but really like this trail. We went up the Kent Springs trail to the first water stop and turned around. Very pretty forest, fun to hike in the fall. You'll see plenty of deer. Path was very rocky. We will definitely be heading back to do the full loop soon.

Did a loop including a trip out to Rogers rock. Checked out the Kent spring cabin too, it’s been a while. Nice and green up there but the flowers aren’t really going yet and the creeks are just trickling. Heard 3 trogons but didn’t look for them.

Madera canyon is kind of being overrun right now with the catalinas being closed. Felt lucky to find a parking spot

This morning I joined several members of my community hiking club for a popular lollipop loop in the Madera Canyon Recreation Area in the Santa Rita Mountains. We parked at the Madera Trailhead Picnic Area and began our hike on the Bog Spring Trail. As we stepped out of the car our ears were treated to the magical sound of running water in Madera Creek across the road.

We chose to hike the Bog-Kent Springs loop in a clockwise direction, Bog Spring first. Although the spring box was full and overflowing, there was no water flowing in Bog's canyon despite all the recent rain. However the forest was as lush and green as I have ever seen it.

As we hiked from Bog to Kent Spring and rounded a corner on the first ridge we could clearly hear water running below in Kent Canyon. Upon arrival at Kent Spring we found only a trickle of water in Kent Creek's north fork, much to our surprise. Where was all that water that we heard earlier from above? Below the spring the north fork was virtually dry.

However, the south fork of Kent Creek was a different story with a robust flow coming down and out of Fern Canyon. The water made for delightful hiking along the middle portion of the Kent Spring Trail. The rain-saturated ground made for good footing while going down the steep and usually loose Kent Springs Trail.

We caught a glimpse of Kent Falls from the trail and quickly decided it was worth a visit this morning. So at the lowest of the Kent Creek crossings we took a short (maybe 500') detour up a route on the left (north) side of Kent Creek to Kent Falls where we took a relaxing break. The amount of water coming over the falls was exceptional for this early in the monsoon season.

Hiking conditions this morning were ideal. Although the air was damp the cool temperature mitigated the humidity. The recent pesky deer flies were nowhere to be found and the damp soil made for good traction. We had shade most of the way thanks to an early start and cloud cover as we hiked out. And except for another small group at Kent Falls that left shortly after we arrived, we had the whole loop to ourselves.

...just another crummy day in the Sonoran Desert!
