We did an overnight backpacking trip by making a loop of Canada del Oro #4 and Red Ridge Trail. CDO #4 had rough hiking for much of it with large areas where the trail was gone or at least buried in brambles.

We started at the Mount Lemmon trailhead and took Mount Lemmon Trail to Sutherland to Samaniego. The trails were covered in snow but were relatively easy to get through. We turned onto CDO towards Shovel Spring, and the trail became less maintained but still followable.

At the second right that drops down into CDO, the trail rapidly deteriorated. After 20 feet, a fallen tree blocked the trail and necessitated going around up the steep slope. Past that, the scrub rapidly began to close in until we were pushing ourselves through brush with every step.

Once down into the valley, it only got worse. The trail was off and on, but even the on parts were heavily grown over with numerous species of thorny plants. It was probably not much faster on the "trail" than just bushwhacking anywhere. Besides thorns, the upper canyon is full of burned out trees and debris. This continued for a couple miles of very slow pace. Our clothes were ripped up and our arms and legs were covered in scratches from pushing through.

Eventually the canyon opened up and more riparian areas break up the brambles. There were a few false starts to this, but eventually we left the brambles behind and entered a beautiful oak riparian area. Someone has cut a trail here and left numerous cairns to guide the way and mark stream crossings. We saw some cow sign as well as deer. We camped a mile from the Red Ridge trail intersection among oaks and near to the stream. The stream was flowing well, and we could hear many small tributaries as we passed along the canyon.

The journey up Red Ridge was shorter than the first day but challenging. It is steep and mostly sun exposed once past Catalina Camp. We had to stop frequently to catch our breath. The trail could benefit from more switchbacks! There were some patches of thorny plants and a couple downed trees across the trail, but the trail is clear and easy to follow. In the final mile snow covered the trail and we struggled along slowly.

I definitely want to return to northern Canada del Oro as it seemed like beautiful oak forest and upland desert terrain. I am glad we tried the upper canyon just to check it off the list, but I'd never recommend it or do it again!

Had a great hike and BBQ after with Jim and Preston.

From Carter Canyon road we took N Miner's Ridge Road up past a tank that is 1/3 of the way to the ridge. Once past the first tank, there aren't any more houses but the road continues up. Once on the top of the ridge, there was another tank. This ridge was very steep at times and there wasn't a lot of shade. I got to the ski lift area after about 1 hr and 10 mins. Jim and Preston started later and arrived after a while. From there we hiked the road over to the Mt Lemmon trail and continued, switching onto portions of the Sutherland Trail, Samaniego Ridge Trail, and Canada del Oro Trail. Our goal was to make it all the way to Shovel Spring. Preston hiked down there and said it was basically dry. Jim and I stayed about above and had lunch. It was after 2 pm by this time so we were pretty hungry. After finding out that Shovel spring was dry, we felt it wasn't worth hiking the extra 500 feet. We knew we had a long uphill climb ahead of us, and it was feeling a bit hot in some areas.

The only good water source was at Quartzite Spring. I ended up carrying 1.25 gallons of water which was more than I really needed. But, the extra weight made it a tougher workout.

There were nice pines above Shovel Spring. I found a few flowers that were hard to identify, even after searching fireflyforest.com.

My strava moving time said 5 hrs 29 mins. After loading my track into HAZ and reducing the number of points, distance came out to 11.27 miles which is believeable. The elevation change on this hike felt like more than it was.

After hiking we stopped over at Alder picnic area used some oak wood and cooked some burgers, hotdogs and steak in a grill. We noticed that a bear got into the trash because some reckless person tried to stuff a big trash bag in a small container and left the lid open. Preston fixed the trash situation before Jim and I were able to help. We ate just after sunset and the food was better than ever. The temp drops so quickly up there, even in June!! How does anyone live up there year round?

The plan from Mt Lemmon was to drop down SR7 > road walk 736 > back up CDO4. As others have noted, the SR trail gets increasingly overgrown, faint and unpleasant north of Samaniego Peak. I eventually turned around, took the connector over to CDO, hiked down to the Red Ridge trail junction, then back to the summit.

Strong, clean flow down in CDO canyon below about the 6000' level. Deer, skunk and coati sightings.

This was a little expansion on the Red Ridge/Canada del Oro Loop. Parked at the very top of Lemmon and took Aspen Draw down to the road, and then the road down to Oracle Ridge. With all the recent rain, everything out there was delightfully green. At Catalina Camp someone had fittingly left a paperback copy of the eating-your-pals-in-the-mountains classic "Alive".

The highlight of the day for me came a bit later, out on the northern leg of Red Ridge Trail, where the views of Reef of Rock are just awesome :worthy:

The first few miles of Canada del Oro were a nice stroll through an exceptionally wide riparian strip. Later on things became a bit tedious, with tricky path-finding, scruggley overgrowth, and loads of buggos. I don't recall it being quite as bad last year. By the time we made it out of the canyon, I had this annoying headache going (don't know why because my legs and lungs felt good and I was drinking plenty of water!) which kept me from really enjoying the cool, sunny afternoon and beautiful pine forests :stretch:

Still, a good day and a grand loop!

I wanted to hike CDO again, but with a few changes from the Red Ridge loop we did last year. We travelled down Oracle Ridge and also started from the top of Lemmon, taking care of Aspen Draw and the road at the beginning.

Oracle Ridge was great in the cool morning weather. Catalina Camp is just as amusing a trip as I remember it being last year. There was water near the trail from the CC/RR junction all the way to the homestretch of the CDO trail. Since I finally remembered to bring a filter, we were able to refill our water a few times (I easily finished 4 liters and a big gatorade). Cooling down in the water made a big difference too.

Now for the whining: wear long pants. The trails are easy enough to follow, but my shins and knees got pretty torn up in the overgrowth - especially above 6k on CDO and in the burnt-out portions of Sutherland. That being said, CDO is gorgeous from all the recent rains and it was still worth the annoyance. There's a lot of climbing to do in the final miles of this hike, but my CO trip left my legs in good shape, so nearly all of my ranting was at the overgrown trails.

We did this hike 2 years ago and it was interesting to see how much the trail changed. From Catalina State Park to Romero Pools it was the same but above the pools the trail has deteriorated significantly. There were quite a few significant wash out sections, lots of tree fall across the trail, and overgrowth. On the plus side there was a ton of water in Romero. So it was slower going up to Romero Pass but once on Mount Lemmon Trail #5 no issues. Took a break at great lookout spot near WOR turn off before continuing on to Radio Ridge. At the turn off for Sutherland we decided to add more AEG and mileage by dropping down to Shovel Spring. Checked out the spring and took a nice break before heading back up to Radio Ridge. Part way up Radio Ridge before the parking lot our friend and ride back to Catalina State Park met us with cold beverages :D Once at the TH we headed for The Sawmill in Summer Haven for eats.

Great hike...lots of AEG  Once down the Red Ridge Trail we reached the Canada Del Oro creek which had some decent water. Very hot and humid in the CDO but as we climbed out of the canyon it cooled off. Up on the ridge there was a cool breeze where we took a break and filtered water at Shovel Spring. Then continued over Mt Lemmon and passed by the ski run back down Aspen Draw Trail to the vehicle.

It's been far too long since I've seen anywhere near 5000 feet of aeg in one day. I just needed to do it within 10-12 hours and keep up a 2 - 2.5 mph pace and not require a horse rescue.
We went down Red Ridge and down Red Ridge and down Red Ridge. We took a side trip over to Catalina Camp and then down to the CDO, I have heard much about. Once we got up to Shovel Spring, we started getting a pleasant breeze. We knew we were close to the top when we started seeing people...and people in flip flops. I was shocked at how much elevation we had to drop on the Aspen Trail. Then a quick climb up to the road and 1/4 mile of road walking to our cars.
Joseph and I agree that Slim Jims are yummier than egg yokes.
This whole hike was all new territory for me!
Great hike, a great group and all three requirements were met! :y:

Great day! The CDO trail should be called the Poison Ivy Trail. Saw two Arizona Black Rattlesnakes! As usual they retreated promptly. There was water in the first drainage you cross when you come down Red Ridge. Also the middle of the CDO was running. There was also water at Shovel Spring.

Good weather for this hike since it was cloudy.

Started a little before noon down the Red Ridge Trail. We took a little detour to the Catalina Camp, which I'd never visited (I took the liberty of tinkering with the mileage and AEG; hopefully that's kosher...). The lower sections of the loop were pretty warm, but since you don't have to climb much, it wasn't too bad.

The CDO trail is terrific. If it was more easily accessible, it would be as popular as any trail in southern AZ. It must be amazing to hike this in autumn. The route finding is easy for the most part. It disappeared a few times around 3-5 miles up the canyon, but the path-of-least-resistance put us back on the trail each of those times. A couple places before the switchbacks are pretty overgrown. The final climb out of the canyon to the Samaniego Ridge trail is really fun ;)

Aspen Draw Trail at sunset (with no mountain bikers) was a great way to end this hike.

This is a tough hike for July. I brought over a gallon and a half of water and Gatorade, and that wound up being just enough. 2 gallons and/or a purification system would probably be smart in this heat.

Sirena and I decided it was time that I knocked the CDO off my "to-do" list - and the promise of post-monsoon lushness made early-September the perfect time. We threw our packs on and spent two glorious days down on the northern slopes of the Santa Catalinas, and I was not disappointed by the beauty and rugged isolation of this canyon. It has definitely seen the brunt of the devastation from the fires and their resulting floods - and there is a good bit of route finding that must be done to keep track of the trail tread. However, if you keep your eyes open and your skills sharp, you should have no trouble.

We brought Lilo, trail dog extraordinaire, as well. She gave the whole experience a definite paws up...

I joined Mitch and the Sierra Adventure Meetup on a hike because Joel was on-call and couldn't stray far from town. A few of my friends from the Alt meetup also went. I don't often join other groups so I thought it would be an interesting experience.

We left one car at the Red Ridge trail and then went up to the Mountain Lemmon TH.

The pace was a bit slower than our normal pace but I worked on resetting my mind to think of this is a leisurely hike. After a while, it became apparent that one of the guys on the trip was struggling some with the downhill. I kept hoping that maybe he is just one of those people who prefer uphill. I also wondered if he should turn around. But it wasn't my hike so I didn't say anything - which in hind site I probably should have.

I was amazed by the CDO trail. I hadn't been on it before and I found it to be quite lush and beautiful. It also had a fair amount of poison ivy on it. As we dropped in elevation the water level in the creek rose. I had stopped rock hopping and just waded in the creek and found that at times the water was up to my knees.

A few storms rolled in and we were rained on but nothing serious. However, the thunder all around us seemed angry.

As we approached our junction the vegetation changed. We started to see a lot more oak, juniper, and sycamore. There was even some yucca in bloom.

On the way up, the alt hikers took the lead and just waited whenever the trail was a bit iffy. The storms blew away so I put up my umbrella and rain cover.

The slow guy was starting to show a lot of distress. We stopped for a lunch break at the junction to Catalina Camp. It took him a long time to get there. Gary went back for him and made sure that he found the way. The hiker was tired, dehydrated, and cramping up. He rested with his feet up for a while.

The crew stocked up on water and then started the final three mile climb out. After waiting several times the debate about whether to call in for help started. We decided to split up and have three of us complete the car shuttle while the others worked to get the distressed hiker out. Mitch organized us in a manner that made sense. A nurse practitioner happened to be with us so she helped take care of the hiker. Mike, who typically hikes with Alt and always carries a ham radio in case of emergencies, so he also stayed. We were about two miles from the TH when we split up.

As we reached the crest, we saw a helicopter searching over by Oracle Ridge. We figured it was looking for our group. Soon it made it's way to Red Ridge. However, there was no where to land so it went away after radioing in the location of the group.

When we got to the trailhead, two sheriff's deputies and a crew of mountain rescue hikers showed up. We gave them some details and then they headed up the trail. We finished up the car shuttle and one of the other guys came up. He had started to feel really tired so he thought it was best for him to complete the hike instead of possibly becoming a patient, too.

After a bit Gary showed up and said that the rescuers had reached them so he came up. He reported that a horse had been requested.

Soon a horse rescue team showed up. I went to watch them saddle up and I was impressed with the efficiency they exhibited. They took off on the trail to bring the patient back on horseback.

The incident commander for SARA came by and so did the SARA horseman. Things went very smoothly. I assume that the call for help went out just before 4 PM and by 6 PM everyone was back at the TH.

Thank you SARA, Pima County Sheriffs, and the Southern Arizona Mounted Search and Rescue teams. We are lucky to have a lot of volunteers who are willing to help out!

Good loop trail to cover the top of Mount lemmon and the major trails on the north side of the mountain. Oracle ridge down to Dan Saddle is easy to follow and pretty much all downhill. Good views to the north and and east and to the west of Red Ridge and the Reef of Rocks. Once at the Dan Saddle, the Catalina Camp Trail #401 heads west and down toward the Hartman Mine and Canada Del Oro Trail. The Red Ridge Trail heads back up to Mount Lemmon near the Hartman Mine. The east fork of Canada Del Oro runs in close proximity to this trail once past the Red Ridge Trail junction. There is usually water in this in spring. There were no issues following this trail. The Canada Del Oro Trail heads north up Canada del Oro Canyon and follows along the creek until about the last mile where it climbs the west side of the creek to a saddle. The Canada Del Oro Trail was easy to follow with the exception of the very lower parts were the brush and ferns were so thick that it made the trail hard to see. I had no problems with losing the trail though. Be careful of snakes along this portion. From the saddle the trail meets up with Sananiego Ridge Trail and continues on a good climb to the Southerland Trail. from here the trail continues to climb to the Mount Lemmon Trail. Trail is in good condition but a bit steep. Once on the Mount Lemmon Trail it is fairly level walking to Radio Ridge over Summerhaven. I continued on down a road to Summerhaven and back to the Oracle Ridge trail head. This is a good trail to take in late spring when the snows have melted and the streams are running.

Meadow/Mount Lemmon/Sutherland/Samaniego/CDO Shortcut to the main attraction of the day the Canada del Oro Trail - a new one for both me and my friend/hiking partner Lance! From the triplogs and description here and Sirena's blog post on the area - http://desertsirena.wordpress.com/2011/ ... oro-trail/ - we suspected it would be pretty interesting, but in person it was truly spectacular - miles of running water, great birds, bear scat, big trees, ferns, lovely trail, interesting views of the ridges above... It does not seem like this trail gets too much use but there is usually a clear path, rarely overgrown at all, and cairns. We hiked out via FR 736 and saw 6-7 different vehicles along the road (it was Saturday) - the road provides some nice views as well although as we approached Saddlebrook and crossed the Canada del Oro for the last time we were ready to be out of the heat! Great Hike!! Pictures: http://www.flickr.com/photos/cmiles/set ... 533766318/

Dave is the man for setting this up!

After a super fun ride out to the CDO trailhead by a couple of very nice gentlemen we set sail to hike 2 of the elusive few trails left for me in the Catalinas. As soon as we hit the trail we got clucked at by a turkey though we never saw it. The hike up CDO was way more pleasant than I thought it would be. There was nice water running nearly the whole way and some areas of fantastic oak forest. was sucking wind by the top.

we hiked samaniego up to it's junction with sutherland so that we could hike the entirety of samaniego ridge down. This trail was great as well and exactly as i thought it would be, except the views were even better. at times they were jaw dropping, for me at least, as i have a special fondness for the wilder backside trails.

overall the trails were in way better shape than i would have ever imagined for backside trails. must have been some serious work put in to both and i hope hope hope they stay this way

saw more deer than i could count. 2 rattlers and heard but didn't see a gobbler

was sick going in to this one and a little worried about how i'd do. did fine on the hike though slower than normal on the ascent. paid the price when i got home though as the chills, cough and fever said "my turn"..oh well i'd do it again in a heartbeat

thanks again Dave for setting this up :worthy:
