Finally did a big loop i have wanting to do for years. Probably more than i am ready for at the moment, but the time was right nonetheless so i just did it anyway.

started at wilson mountain TH and went CCW. i had premier weather for the day and on a gorgeous thursday in sedona i saw about 10 people all day. all of the trails are in great shape with the highlights for me being wilson mountain and sterling pass, as well as dropping down brins mesa but really the whole thing is pretty awesome (except the short death defying walk up 89A between N wilson mountain and sterling pass. :o )

Delightful day and happy to finally knock this one off my list

Wilson Mountain was chosen for today’s hike. Bruce suggested starting from the North Wilson trail, which was a good call. We got started a little before 0800 to pleasant temps. Had a nice amount of shade and greenery for the first 1.50 miles, which climbed steeply.

Nice chance to catch our breath as we walked across the first bench, then more uphill. Once up “top”, we first headed over to the south overlook. Spent a few minutes taking pics, then headed to the north overlook. The walk between the two is mostly flat and easy. Had a snack break at the north overlook, wandered around a few minutes, then made our way back south.

Turned off the trail and headed up to the summit. Easy offtrail. Found what seemed to be the highest point, took some more pics, then headed back to the main trail. Oddly enough, while the ascent felt rocky in places, the descent felt less rocky, and easier than anticipated. We passed several hikers on our way down, but the North Wilson portion of the trail only had two.

I don’t do much Sedona hiking because I don’t like the drive, or people, but this was a fun one. Always great to hike with Kelly & Bruce.

linda set up a wilson mountain hike with bruce and i joining in
we decided to go from north wilson, which would be new to me
did the wilson mountain trail with angela ten years ago :o
we got going around 0745
up north wilson to the first bench intersection with wilson trail
another mile uphill
we went south to sedona overlook first
good use trail through pines trees to a rocky edge
great views of sedona and the surrounding red rock
retraced our steps, then off to the north overlook
not much elevation change on this part
much less deadfall to climb over than ten years ago
we took a break at the overlook
nice overview of oak creek canyon and could even see vultee arch
we did the short off trail to the true summit on the way back
easy hiking and an interesting high point with views to the east
started seeing a few more people on the way down, especially in the mile down to first bench
the return on north wilson went by quickly
nice to get the true summit and hike north wilson
this is a very scenic hike
weather was good
thanks for putting this together linda
good to see bruce again
great day :)

I got an invite to join Linda and Kelly on this hike in Sedona. It's been 5 years since I've been up here. I never realized that you can use your National Park pass in lieu of paying the Red Rock fee. Good to know.

We started up to a perfect 53 degrees. It's a steady 2.3 mile, 1600' climb to the "First Bench". We had shade most of the way up. It's another mile and 600' up to what should be called the 2nd Bench and the turn to the south overlook. Sweet 180 degree views to Sedona, the surrounding areas and down to the airport.

The mostly flat hike to the north overlook clicked off quickly. We took in the views here which I'd forgotten are actually nicer than the south overlook. After a snack break we started back and hit up the easy off trail to the high point.

We started seeing more people on the way back, but never too crazy. Always fun hiking with these two misfits. Added bonus. We taught each other new "Terms" to expand our vocabularies.

Lots of fall color below first bench, but most was yellow/brown above it. A little bit of snow from the storm earlier in the week. Excellent weather and beautiful hike as always.

Left the East Valley about 5:30 a.m. and were on the trail in Sedona by 8 a.m. There are two trailheads for this hike. We started on the North Wilson Mountain TH, which begins at the Encinoso day use area and eventually connects with the Wilson Mountain Trail, after about 3 miles of hiking. The North TH is a lot more "forestry" and green, with more shade, while the Wilson TH is more open and exposed, but with more views of the surrounding red rock that characterizes Sedona.

The N. Wilson trail climbs right out of the gate, and we put up about 1000 ft of elevation in the first 1.5 miles. It was a page right out of Indian Garden to the top of the GC. That said, the climb was beautiful, with the surrounding forest and greenery. The temps were also nice and the shade was good. The humidity was a little annoying, but all good. Very few people on this part of the trail, so we enjoyed a lot of solitude.

After two miles, the trail topped out on a flat area called "First Bench," where the landscape opens up and where a fire came through about 15 years ago. Lots of meadow and wildflowers here, including a nice patch of sunflowers.

Then it was more climbing after the N. Wilson and Wilson trails merged, up to the top of the mountain, which is itself more a flat plateau, and which, upon reaching, we arrived at a fork that would allow us to head out to the south overlook (0.4 mi.) or the north overlook (1.5 mi.). Naturally, we decided to do both!

The south overlook, gives expansive views down on Sedona and surrounding area. We relaxed there and ate lunch, before retracing our steps and then heading to the north lookout. The section heading to the north lookout had been pretty scorched by the fire in 2006 and was the least scenic portion of the hike. However, the burn area did not extend all the way to the north lookout, which remains surrounded by some nice, tall pine trees and related foliage. In fact, the trees obscured some parts of the north lookout, which on first view didn't seem as impressive as the south view. But, with a little exploring, we discovered some alternate viewpoints, with awesome views and an ideal campsite right on the edge of the rim, from which I'm sure it is spectacular to watch the sunset. We made a note to come back and do this as an overnighter.

On the way down, at the junction, my wife suggested that I hike down to the Wilson trailhead while she headed back down to the car, and then she would shuttle over to pick me up. It was nice to get to experience both trails. The Wilson trail ends at the Midgley Bridge over 89A. The bridge itself is kind of cool, and it was fun to check it out.

Another great Sedona hike in the books

Soggy. North Wilson Trail was soggy, dripping with moisture, the morning of my hike. Heavy rain had fallen the day before, wetting the foliage, and the high humidity of the early morning (4 am start, beat mid-day sun) added a thick dew. Now on many trails, soggy plants present no problem, the trail being wide and the vegetation sparse. But North Wilson trail runs narrow, and the trail being on the north side, grows thick, and the rains in recent weeks, being heavy, augmented growth, so the vegetation had grown well into and across the trail.

So soggy. The wet foliage soaked my hike pants, at times almost completely. But no mind. The air was cool, and clouds filled the sky throughout the hike, so neither heat nor sun rose to the level of an annoyance. And the trail itself (overlooking the soggy foliage) ran nicely, certainly uphill, fairly steep, but at a constant pitch, only moderately rocky, and easy and distinct to follow. So I could set a steady pace, and proceed upward at a good speed.

As noted, I started early. Despite that, by the morning twilight hour, enough light slipped through the clouds to allow some nice vistas. At First Bench, the sun peaked under the clouds, and created a pleasant sunrise with snippets of orange and yellow just over the horizon. And further along on the hike up, San Francisco Peaks became visible in the distance, the peaks silhouetted against the brighter sky, and with a low morning mist and a line of thin clouds providing accents to the scene.

With a steady stride, I reached the trail marker at the top of the ascent not long after the sun fully rose. The sign announced, in silent patience, that I could choose south, to the Sedona Overlook, or north, to the North Canyon Overlook. I choose north, my having never gone that direction. Going north did mean a bit more distance to go, a good mile plus, to the overlook. But the trail no longer rose steeply, but rather twisted calmly through the gradual undulations of the plateau at the top of Wilson Mountain. I then reached the overlook, unexpectedly, as I didn’t catch any indication of my approaching it. But the views provided the reward for the ascent to get there. The vista expanded outward with grandeur, with peaks and mountains rising out of Oak Creek Canyon, and subsidiary canyons offering their own cliffs and formations. As I gazed, mists roamed randomly through the mountains and cliffs, and clouds drifted across the sky in the background.

Satisfied, and amazed, I headed back. Having reached my main goal, the North Canyon Overlook, I took more notice of the rhythm of the mountain top forest. And that rhythm reflected what I surmised to be a past serious fire. Large patches of thick forests with high pines would give way abruptly to large patches of open low shrub and grasses. Amidst these open patches, isolated pines stood individually, full at the top, but branchless below. And telltale scorched tree trunks dotted the landscape, their bark blacked completely.

The abrupt change from forest to open expanse, the tall pines bare except at the top, and the scorched trunks, spoke of a likely fire. So on my return, I checked. And yes, in 2006, the Brins Mesa fire burned that mesa, which sat below Mount Wilson to the south and east, then climbed up the mountain on its Brins Mesa side, climbed up and partially over the top of Wilson Mountain, the for a length down the other.

As in my ascent, I proceeded downward with good speed, and with the wetness now largely driven off by the sun and lowering humidity. I reached First Bench in the light of mid-morning, that light highlighting the Bench’s vibrant lime green undergrowth and the rounded low pines that speckled the expanse sparsely. And turning back up the trail, I could view the possibly iconic scene of the First Bench trail marker sitting quietly while in the background the south face of Wilson Mountain towered above.

From First Bench, the trail proceeded down, in a north direction, along a ridge line, but then turned left, west, now down the inner face of a canyon, a canyon for the most part concealed and not visible from The main road of Route 89A. An amazing vista opened up. Multiple red and white rock fins and cliffs rose up on the opposite wall of this inner canyon, on the west wall. The formation towered both upward and downward from the trail vantage point.

As the trail continued down, it turned right, out of north end of the canyon to proceed more eastly. The dominant feature now became a rounded, forest covered hill, with only a smattering of exposed rock features. Not terribly scenic, but then again nature is formed by the forces of nature and its life by the guidance of evolution. Only by happenstance does nature please the human eye.

Proceeding on, I arrived at the Encinoso parking area, greeted only by my lone car, and further not having not passed any human along my hike, though several deer, and a good number of birds, did cross my path throughout the day. A bit tired, but satisfied, and appreciative of opportunity to hike, I headed home.

A pragmatic note. While technically the Encinoso parking area does not open until after dawn, no gates blocked my entry at 4 am, and no evidence existed the gates had been closed at any recent time. Do post a red rock or equivalent pass, as I can make not statement as to how often and whether rangers stop by to check for such.

I checked the calendar and discovered that I hadn't hiked in almost 7 weeks! 🤯 Work and other obligations kept me away from the mountains and canyons. And we had Rim-to-Rim coming up the following week! We decided to do something moderate with beautiful views, and Wilson Mountain was the perfect choice. I've done Wilson Mountain multiple times, but never from the North Trailhead, so we started from there.

We began at 10am. Temperatures were in the low 80s at the start, which was perfect. It warmed up to the 90s during the ascent, but the trail was well shaded most of the way. A lot more green than expected, with beautiful views of Oak Creek Canyon. We only encountered 3 other groups of people on the ascent. At the top there was a pleasant breeze. The views from the north overlook were incredible as always, except that Humphreys Peak was diminished by smoke or haze in the distance. The views from the Sedona overlook were outstanding as always. We spent over 30 minutes at each overlook taking in the views.

The descent was unremarkable, except that I slid on the loose rocks about 30 times, and actually fell twice. We encountered one couple and a dog on the way down.

Wilson mountain will always be a favorite. The views are amazing, and every time I've gone, there have been few or no people on the trail, despite the parking lot and road being packed. It was an enjoyable day, and we had time to eat afterwards, followed by a trip to the Edge of the World for the evening.

I guess we're ready for our first Rim-to-Rim next week! 😀

Decided to head up North Wilson. When I parked in the lot around 7am for the picnic area plenty of spots. Started up the hike pretty quickly, only saw a few others on the trail. The lower section is very lush this year, nice to see a lot of regrowth continue to happen in this area after the 06 Brins Fire. The switchbacks were brutal, as usual.

After going past first bench the vegetation along the trail was very thick going up to the top. May need some trail maintenance at some point this year. So much pollen and flowering plants! (My allergies are definitely in full gear because of it!)

It was pretty windy at the top, which is usual in May, June. Not too many people at the top. Strung up a hammock to sit in and eat lunch. Always a nice view and great weather at the top of Wilson.

Hiked both lookouts and also just walked around off trail for a bit looking for wildflowers. All in all, great day!

Of course, when I made it back to the car in the afternoon, Oak Creek Canyon was a total cluster. Was glad to be driving out of the canyon, looked like a 2 hour traffic jam of creek seekers were trying to get into the canyon with their coolers and floaties. Sigh.

Amazing mountain adventure. Great views, wildflowers, and best of all no mud! Trail is well maintained and marked. Route scout did say that I was off trail numerous times though and I was clearly not. Not sure what was up with that. We went to both lookouts. The canyon overlook is my favorite. There is a black tailed rattler that has made his home at the end of trail on the cliff face of the sedona overlook. Not aggressive, but he is there. We took our time and enjoyed the view from the top. Someone with more motivation than us could get up and down much quicker.

One of my favorite Sedona loops that is tough to get takers. A mile of scarce shoulder highway between Sterling Pass Trail #46 and North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 is the issue.

I suggested 6 hikes and Bruce selected this loop. Figured with an early start knocking out the hwy first, it might not be so dangerous. We lucked out. Dave was returning home from a multi-day trip up north. Shuttle plus classic Dave one liners as a bonus!

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123
Typically I prefer the spectacular Autumn foliage display. Late spring green after the better than average rainfall since January was a nice change of scenery.

Wilson Mountain Trail #10
We passed 3 or 4 little groups heading down from Wilson Bench. Tread could use a rake crew.

Jim Thompson Trail #124
Bumping this from 2 stars to 3. Easily higher if weren't for all the nearby world class options.

Cibola Pass & Jordan Trail
Arizona Cypress is one of my favs. Red Rock backdrop makes it sing.

Soldier Pass Trail #66
World class trail packs a mean punch. Never gets old for me. Not busy as the mercury rises. Shockingly had Soldier Arches to ourselves for the majority of lunch until a friendly mother and daughter arrived.

Brins Mesa Trail #119
Not my fav. Highlight was helping out a happy foreign tourist family.

Vultee Arch Trail #22
Abundant rainfall this year has this one feeling like a jungle. Shade in the late afternoon makes ccw favorable.

Sterling Pass Trail #46
Rocks hard IMO. Steep both sides but the views are worth it.

Dave Joined us and since he was meeting us there, we could set up the mini shuttle, avoiding the 1 mile road walk between Trailheads.

Up the North Wilson Trail, we notice quite a bit of recent trail maintenance. So recent, it was from the previous day as noted by @mt98dew in his triplog.

North Wilson Mountain Trail #123 is a much better option in getting to the top of Mt Wilson IMHO. Prettier, more cover, less traffic and a steady climb.

Plenty of flora still Flora-ing all around this loop today.

Down Wilson Mountain Trail #10 on the southside, is a bit rocky at the top. We saw our first groups of hikers on this trail.

Cutting in front of Steamboat Rock, on the Jim Thompson Trail #124, was a first for me. Easy trail and great views. You did not have to concentrate on where you were walking and could enjoy the scenery.

Cibola Pass and the Jordan Trail got us over to the Devils Kitchen sinkhole. From here we headed up the Soldier Pass Trail #66, to our next destination. We surprisingly had had Soldier Arch to ourselves for lunch.

We exited the arch through the top and made our way to the "Eye in the Sky" and then hitting the Brins Mesa Trail #119. This trail has a few interesting areas, mush-so-more that the FR152C road walk. This was the hottest part of the day.

The Vultee Arch Trail #22 was in decent shape, up to the turn to the Arch and had much needed tree cover.

Past this point is the Sterling Pass Trail #46. It is a bit "Thick" from all the spring moisture, but it only lasts a 100yds or so. The climb starts gradual and goes to butt kicker up to the pass. From here, it drops even steeper and rockier down to 89a.

A good hike. In the direct sun with no wind, bordering hot for me. Luckily, we had a decent breeze and tree cover for the bigger climbs. Good seeing Dave again. Joe was there too. :D It'd been a few weeks.

Got a late start for me...didn't get up there until just after 10am. I was surprised, the parking was full when I got there. I soon found out why as I headed up. A trail crew about 20 strong was heading down as I was heading up. Needless to say the trail was in great shape! This north side is quite a contrast compared to the "south side". A lot more vegetation with a couple of brief pine groves that added to the uniqueness of this trail. Also, there were some nice sized cliffs to the west that was a constant companion as the trail switchbacked up. In my opinion this side seemed a lot more steep than the "south side". That didn't bother me too much going up, but my toes were aching as I made my way down. The trail crew had gone up to the "Y" with Wilson Trail so it really was an nice ascent. (Kind of wonder what it was like before they had cleaned it up). The climb from the "Y" to the split for the outlooks was quite a bit overgrown. The trail was easy to follow, but lush foliage was closing in from both sides. There was another nice, but brief pine grove just after the climb and before the split for the outlooks. Hit the Sedona lookout first and then headed over to the North Canyon lookout. The trees (not pines) on the way to the North overlook were fighting something bad. A lot of the smaller saplings were dead and dying and some of the larger trees were starting to show similar indications. :( . Looked like there was smoke from a major fire to the east of Flagstaff. Hard to say with clouds in the background. Besides for the trail workers only saw 4 people the entire day and 3 of them were at the Sedona Lookout. Wildlife was minimal (lizards) but the flowers were impressive, especially from where the mesa starts up to split for the outlooks.

Yeah! Got out of the heat and did some hiking in Sedona today! A bit cooler and breezy the whole time! I really love getting up here and smelling the pines for a day. I have limited experience hiking in Sedona and this was the perfect hike to check out. We started out on North Wilson and hardly ran into anyone else all day. Just a few passersby now and again. We did run into a healthy-looking rattlesnake mid-way up! :o I also enjoyed the dizzying views of Sedona from the summit as well as the view of Humphrey's Peak still covered in snow. Great hike and I will definitely return! :D

1st overnight backpacking trip with my girlfriend...thought this one would be a nice intro! Little did we know that the official trail gpx for this hike only brings you to the "bench" overlooking Sedona. We were thinking more of the summit, which was almost 1.5x the distance from the bench. If you're thinking of camping by the bench, it is possible, but everyone hiking the trail will have a full view of your campsite. After getting to the summit, there was a campsite right near the end with an overlook of Sedona. We decided we wanted more privacy so we hiked along the ridge a half mile. We didn't find anything good (there were tons of shrubs, bushes, cacti, and rocks) so we hiked back toward the trail. We found a decent campsite a little of the trail (see pics). If you are thinking of camping there I'd try to find the same site -- just go to the right of the trail maybe 100ft and you should see a nice flat clear spot overlooking Sedona (or look at my GPX file and see where there is a lot of movement toward the end/see my pics). Otherwise weather was beautiful and the view was superb. Brought about 4.5/5L of water each and was came back with 0.5 to spare. There may have been a couple of spots to filter water near the first bench but it wasn't clean and probably would have needed a "pre-filter" before running it through the actual water filter. As far as parking goes, we had an America the Beautiful Annual Pass so we just left it on the dash in the parking lot.

The "3 Passes" loop in Sedona is one that has gotten somewhat popular in the trail running community. I was looking for something around 20 miles, and with Sedona having received significant snow the weekend prior, I thought this would be a good opportunity to check it out.

This guide is the closest thing I could find to 3 Passes - I believe the only difference is this goes directly up Brins Mesa instead of going up Soldier Pass trail.

I started from Jordan TH and went clockwise, so as to do the three passes in order from shortest to highest.

Everything was pretty normal until I topped out on Brins Mesa, where it was extremely muddy, and I tried my hardest to avoid the soft areas in order to avoid ruining the trail. Probably wasted effort, since everybody else was just going through the mud. The descent down the canyon on the north side was beautiful, which the creek flowing about as much as one can expect, and some snow still on the ground.

Heading up Dry Creek road was unremarkable other than having to zigzag around to avoid the small ponds on the road.

Vultee Arch trail was new to me; I have to say it was in top form. Beautiful canyon, and when I hit Sterling Pass trail it was all icy snow. There was no sunlight in this area, so this made the ascent a bit sketchy in places, very slow, but still a lot of fun. Saw a couple of hikers at the top. The east side was a bit better, although there were 2-3 really icy spots on steep slopes.

The mile or so on the 89 was by far the worst part of the route, and it was especially bad with snow banks on the shoulder. Basically had to run on the lane stripe. This was motivation to keep moving.

North Wilson trail was fantastic. It was actually more clear of snow than Sterling Pass, and on the way up, I noticed a huge temporary waterfall across the canyon. Probably a rare sight. The bench at the top was muddy with lots of freshly melted (i.e., cold) snow that was up to six inches deep in places. I had hiked up Wilson Mtn to the North Wilson junction the previous weekend (the day after the snow fell), and it's definitely a little easier going without waist-deep snow up there...

Once past Wilson Canyon (where I missed the Jim Thompson turn and ended up almost going to Midgely Bridge), I was just ready to be done. That last couple miles was a bit of a slog, but it was a small price to pay to see Sedona in top form.

Led an Arizona Desert Hikers group of 14 on a shuttle hike up North Wilson from Encinoso Picnic area to North Lookout and back down to Midgley Bridge. We caught the tail end of the changing colors and had light breezes and perfect temps. A great way to start November after a weak October.
