Wanted to do something a little closer to civilization after Saturday's all-day adventure, so I decided to check out Pole Knoll. The general plan was to do the loop, plus an out-and-back to Squirrel Spring. Started clockwise with temps still cool. Definitely some aches left over from the previous day.

The first part of the Aspen "trail" at the sign was pretty much non-existent, but it was an easy walk across the meadow. After that, all Jeep road with occasional short stretches of single track. Opted to use the Juniper/Ponderosa side on the way down, which was 100% Jeep road. Still a trickle at one of the creeks crossing the road.

Refilled my water at Squirrel Spring, against the advice of the sign saying "not safe for drinking". I've been drinking out of that spring since I was a child, so whatever. I did run it through the filter just for good measure...

Took Pinyon on the way up, which actually started out with a half mile or so of singletrack. I was definitely ready to be done, and didn't feel like running at all. Got back to the Pole Knoll loop and resumed in the clockwise direction; the next couple miles were actually single track, including a stretch of the Grouse trail (which I took instead of the loop trail).

The Squirrel Spring out-and-back is probably not something I'd recommend, although I do think I'll probably go back and explore some of the other trails on Pole Knoll.

There are many use trails mixed among the named & numbered trails. Some of them more obvious than the official trails. The difference is that the path of official trails is marked by blue diamonds. The only difference in color, or shape, is for difficulty, which follows skiing convention. Personally, for hiking, I would rate no trail more than moderate.

Pole Knoll Trail #602 is old jeep trail for ⅓ mile. The trail then splits: Right is more casual strolling, while left is rather rocky. I went left. Rated “difficult”, it was similar to hiking a Mogollon Rim creek bottom (minus the deadfall). The rocky section is only 150 yds. long. If you mind your footing, no problem. 👣

Back on old jeep trail, at ¾ miles I split left onto Grouse Trail #602G. Just short of a mile, the trail splits again: Go right. 250 yds. later is an x-intersection: Go straight across. If you get onto the wrong trail, like I sometimes did, don’t worry: With all the signs, it’s hard to get lost.

At 1¼ mile, I split left onto singletrack Viewpoint Trail #602H. Just after the split was another short section of fall color in even less mature aspen. Just babies — like the tiny horned lizard I almost stepped on. Viewpoint switchbacks up 300 ft. in ¾ mile. My recent hikes up North Mountain paid off, as even over 9,000 ft. elevation, Viewpoint was no problem.

The top of Viewpoint Trail #602H is marked by double blue diamonds. Left Viewpoint continues; right is a contour-following use trail. To summit Pine Knoll, split the difference, heading off-trail, up through mixed grass and cinders. (Pole Knoll is an old volcano.) In 250 yds., there is a false summit, which has awesome views southwest to Sunrise Ski Area. 🤗

From the false summit, it is 150 yds. along a semi-fenced aspen grove to Pole Knoll’s true summit. Overall, the climb is only 250 ft. I searched for a benchmark, but only found tangled wires. Perhaps from a height-of-light. No geocache or summit log either. The only item of interest was a small open-sided structure in the aspen grove, which appeared to be neither a hunting blind nor shelter.

My GPS was low on battery, and I’d forgot my extras back at the trailhead. Nothing in my pack either, as I’d left that at home in favor of a Camelbak. Pole Knoll Recreation Area is so mellow & enjoyable, I didn’t need the weight of all that extra stuff. Instead of dawdling, I headed down with a quickness back to the double blue diamond. 🔹🔹

Viewpoint Trail #602H continues around the north and east slope of Pole Knoll. Summiting from that area would suck, due to all the aspen deadfall on the upper slope. However, it was the shadiest part of a mostly shady hike. At just over 3 miles, Viewpoint Trail widens to jeep trail, seemingly heading right. Instead, split left.

The t-intersection of Summit Trail #602J is 150 yds. further. The obvious route, left, is the way you should go. I could barely make out a trail to the right. It must reveal itself during cross-country skiing season. Summit Trail seemed steeper than Viewpoint Trail, but looking at the route profile, I guess it is the same. Not sure why it is called "Summit Trail" as it does not go anywhere near the top of Pole Knoll.

Throughout my hike, the dirt and clay of the trail surface was moist, but not wet or muddy. Just enough to get me dirty when I got down for my flower photo closeups.

Just over 4 miles, Summit Trail #602J turns left. (Right is Elk Trail #602I.) After 200 more yards, I turned right onto Osprey Trail #602C. The surrounding terrain was much more open, but there was still plenty of shade. At 4⅔ miles, I split left onto Raven Trail #602B.

Finally, at just under 5 miles, I turned left back onto Pole Knoll Trail #602 for the final half mile back to the trailhead. I got a bit confusing there, between jeep trail, singletrack and the trailhead access road. Regardless, you are heading the correct direction.

I really enjoyed hiking through the mixed aspen, ponderosa, conifer and small, sunny, meadows of Pole Knoll Recreation Area! 👍

After work hike to the top of Pole Knoll. Signed the register (hi Elizabeth!) and enjoyed sunset from the summit. Camped at the northwestern base of the peak overnight and worked remotely from there the next day. The wind was absolutely ape****.

Went on a quick and easy hike with my kids and friends at pole Knoll. We did a ccw loop on pole knoll loop, elk, and summit trails. A very beautiful area and not too many people. We only see one group of 6,yippee!

Not a challenging hike by any means (unchallenging being my kids favorite type of hike!), but beautiful scenery of trees. A nice place to take a quick walk! ;)

Wet hike. I hit the trail somewhat on the way up but mostly bypassed it on the way down. It was cold and my feet were soaked. Other than that it was good!

Stopped by Pole Knoll on our way back to Show Low. There was enough snow on the ground for the kids to be happy about. We walked along some of the trails that appeared to have the most snow, played until the kids got cold, then headed back to the car.

The first of a 3-peak day in the far-flung reaches of the state, which Tanya and I had been talking about for awhile, and finally got around to doing. Some driving to get there, but what a great area!

We found 3 short hikes, and Tanya could choose from the ones she wanted. First up was Pole Knoll. We went south on FR 112 for about a mile to a pull-off on the east side of the road. Headed south towards the open, grassy western face of the Knoll and just made our way up. Very easy route-finding and never gets too steep. Found a fenceline at a western false summit, but followed the meadow beside it to the true top. Some HAZ names on top.

The White Mountains are incredibly green and lush right now, and we found out why. First lightning flash across the way at Sunrise Ski Area/Baldy area occurred at 9:37 a.m. I've spent some time in active areas during Monsoon Season, but that might be a record for earliest buildup + strike combo.

Threatening weather caused us pause before heading out on PK's system of loop trails in the noon hour: Heavy downpours in the valleys to the NW, thunder and eventually visible lightning. Started at the kiosk by the parking lot. Only one other car was parked there. The sign-in book didn't show much trail-use of late. Although the description lists Alpine as the closest place to this trail, the PK's TH is only about 8 mi NW of Greer.

Traveled clock-wise on the Pole Knoll Loop Tr, a relatively flat area that passes through a light ponderosa forest and clusters of wildflowers. The Loop is 6.2 mi long and courses an elevation of 8,900' to 9,700'. The Knoll itself is listed at 9,793'. Most of the other 11 much-shorter trails branch off of it. The longest of the other trails, Meadow Lark and Summit, are only 2.1 mi.

The trail was barely visible for the first quarter-mile but posed no difficulty by following the blue-diamond markers on the trees. It was hunting season, and sounds of gunshots came up from a distant valley to the E. Passed the junctures with the Meadow Lark, the only trail that spins outward. At 1.5 mi we turned back in a northerly direction on the Raven Tr. Lots of aspen and spruce in here along with even more wildflowers. Eventually we hooked up with the PK Loop and doubled back just reaching the car before a steady rain set in. The temperature was 52 F. Glad we suited up in our wet gear and jackets. Saw no one in the hour and a half we were out.

Good heavens, that Railroad Trail is something awful... flat, boring, and hard to ride on because of the cinders. I was really glad when John suggested we hike over to Pole Knoll for a change of scenery.

We hiked over and then up. Straightforward, but no trail to the top. We could see signs where the cross-country ski trails would be in winter, but no walking or bike trails from where we were. The top was actually pretty neat; we found a summit marker and a register, and stopped for a quick beer. This made the hike downhill a little more interesting. Stopped for a moment to enjoy the blue skies and big fluffy white clouds over Sunrise. Getting back onto the bike was a necessary chore... I was glad to get back to the car and then join a few others at Pinetop Brewing for some sustenance before heading home.

Team Buford was having some issues getting their truck started so Liz and I headed over to the railroad track for a quick mountain bike ride. I borrowed Chumley’s bike and Liz brought her own. Our plan was to ride for a couple of hours and then regroup with everyone before heading back to Phoenix.

We started the ride and found the trail to be more trouble than it was worth. It meanders across a wide open area and got boring real quick. After a couple of miles we regrouped to talk about our options. I noticed Pole Knoll off in the distance and Liz was down. We continued riding another mile and then stopped and locked up the bikes. From there we went cross country towards the large knoll. After roughly a mile we started the climb up. It was a bit steep but very straightforward. We continued up and before long things leveled off and we proceeded to the high point.

Once on top we took a break and soaked in the views. Sunrise Ski Resort was off in the distance and we could see for miles. It was a clear and warm today. A nice change from the previous three days weather. While on top we found a register and signed ourselves in. It goes back to 2001 and we didn’t find any HAZ entries. We also found the benchmark which was placed in 1936.

After our break we started the return and it was much easier heading down hill. Along the way Liz had to stop to document her 10,000 step of the day. :D Soon after we arrived back at the bikes and then rode back to the trailhead. Our timing was just about perfect because Chumley and Team Buford got the truck running and were on their way. We stopped at the Pinetop Brewery and then returned to Phoenix.

This capped a really fun, and cold, weekend! Thanks Liz for the bike ride and quick summit!

White Mountains Winter 2013
I needed to feel some snow beneath my feet - so having heard from my neighbors Terry and Giselle about their New Year's trek to Sunrise Ski Park (check out => [ Sunrise Ski Park ] ), I thought a couple of days in the White Mountains would be "just the ticket". I couldn't take advantage of my Marriott Rewards or Priority Club Rewards booking a hotel since none of their hotels in the vicinity of the White Mountains are "pet friendly". Luckily the Best Western in Eagar AZ will accept dogs in the room, so we had our base camp.

Wednesday 1/2 - Arrived in the White Mountains late morning via Hwy 260 with our first stop near Sunrise Ski Park and FR112 and the Railroad Grade Trail #601 (see => [ Railroad Grade Trail #601 ] ). Lots of snow fun on the slopes of the Railroad Grade. FR117 was unplowed so our afternoon plans to explore Green's Peak and the Four Knolls (see => [ Four Knolls ] ) were thwarted. Our back-up plan was to explore trails near the village of Greer. Mini-hikes on West Fork Trail #94 and Butler Canyon Trail #98 (see => [ West Fork Trail #94 - Greer ] and [ Butler Canyon Trail #98 ] ) and exploring some real estate poking around the village. You can see the scarred forest and how close it came to torching all of Greer from last summer's Wallow Fire (see => https://wildfiretoday.com/2011/06/09/wa ... r-arizona/ and [ Wallow Fire Map 2011-06-27 :: map ] ). We ended the day with a sunset hike of the G&F Grasslands (see => [ White Mountain Grasslands Area ] ). Grasslands lived up to the hype for surefire wildlife encounters as we met up with a herd of mule deer.

Thursday 1/3 - After a frigid night, arrived at the South Fork Trail #97 (see => [ South Fork Trail #97 ] ) trail head with my truck thermometer indicating 19degF (neglected to get photo evidence, but did capture the noon time temperature of 23degF). We hiked the 3 miles to the bridge with the dogs enjoying the snow. Once again scars from the Wallow Fire could be seen along the hiking route. Next up was Pole Knoll (see => [ Pole Knoll Recreation Area ] ). Hiking was challenging post-holing your route beside the set track for cross country skiing. I was very impressed with the skiing conditions at Pole Knoll - makes me want to break out my skis! We Wrapped up our White Mountain tour with some photo ops at Horseshoe Cienega (see => [ Horseshoe Cienega ] ) and Los Burros (see => [ Los Burros Trail #631 ] ). We had a late day dinner in Show Low and returned home via Hwy 60.

Drove up to the White Mountains for a bit of winter fun. Of course, the snow in Pinetop where our cabin was located was minimal - most of it seems to have melted off and turned to mud. So we headed up to Pole Knoll where there was still plenty of the white stuff on all of the slopes except the south. On the south face we ended up taking off our snow shoes to navigate the rocks, but they had to go back on in the knee to hip deep drifts once we got around to the east side again.

Wonderful day. The trails were well marked and easy to follow. Although it's obvious they were groomed, there wasn't much evidence of cross-country skiers or other snowshoers for that matter. We had the place all to ourselves! The snow was a bit crusty and wet, which made it particularly tough for the dogs, but once they figured out to stay in our snowshoe tracks, they did much better.

The day we left Pinetop it was snowing. Go figure. Doesn't look like much will stick, but we're glad to see it anyway!

the wife and I did a day hike around Pole Knoll. Been tying to do this hike for 2 weeks, and we finally beat the rain. It was great having the whole place to ourselves, not anybody but us, not even any elk hunters. The place is awesome, we even ran into a herd of hundreds of sheep. It seems the trails are more for cross country ski'ing but they where pretty east to follow.

Did a little day hike with the boys and my wife. Just a beautiful area to see during the summer. Little bit of a drizzle while we were out gave way to a downpour the second we got back to the car. Great timing!

I skied around the Meadowlark Loop and up the Summit trail a short distance. Snow is VERY fast, a bit icy. It is rotting in places. It is still 2 feet deep, though. I found quite a few very small hills to ski up so I could ski down them.

Snow report: Slightly icy but it will hold your weight so you can avoid the ugly groomed areas and snowshoe tracks.

I met with a family I know and helped them learn to ski. It was pretty fun! The conditions had iced up a bit since I was last up there. I actually post only a fraction of the time I go up there.

Snowshoers please stay out of the ski tracks. The Forest Service has received so many complaints about this phenomenon that they have actually put up signs!

This has to be the best snow we've had since I moved up here 10 years ago. I started on the Pole Knoll Loop trail, which I don't usually ski when i go to Pole Knoll, due to the fact that most of the time it is not skiable--too many bare spots out in those big meadows.

But today was sweet. I started out following someone else's tracks. The FS has groomed part of the area, but thankfully not the whole loop. I dislike groomed trails. Once I got around behind the knoll, the skier who made the tracks took off up the mtn. I decided to follow the Pole Knoll loop itself, and found that breaking trail was easy and fast. The best surface for this sport is packed snow with a little loose stuff on top. I slid along pretty well.

Out in those big meadows it is so beautiful. You can see Sunrise slopes, but no one else is around. Some snowmobilers off in the distance, but no one else. To follow this loop you really have to pay attention to the signs, which are far apart, and the blue tags on trees. Sometimes they are far apart, and that is when I was glad I had done it before, because otherwise I might have gotten a bit confused. Once I got back into the woods and within a mile and a half of the parking lot, the groomed trail was there, so I followed it. It just has no esthetic appeal, and is also kind of rough and slippery. I was not impressed. Some people do like it, though, I guess.

I am guiding a trip here on Superbowl Sunday. We'll be meeting at Bashas' in Eagar at 9 a.m. Arrive ready to ski! I will post it as an event, and it's also on ABC.
