Apparently the Boca Grande trail is not on HAZ? I'll have to add it. My uniques are falling way below el aguila, and that's wholly unacceptable.

This was an absolutely miserable loop. The only saving grace was that apparently people like Christmas and do things to prepare for it so they were too busy to go hiking today. The lack of people were an unexpected delight.

Last time I was here it was almost exactly 10 years ago. It was snowing [ photo ] . Today it was 147 degrees. In December. There was sweat. We searched for shade. At 10am. In December. WTLF is going on here? It's awful. This should be wonderful now. It is not.

The Jewel of the Death was dry. Crispy and dead. Bonus- the bridge hasn't been washed away in the past 17 years. Because there hasn't been surface water here since Carter was president.

The parking lot hooked up with some desert rabbits because there are about 400 more spots than the last time I was here. Apparently people have no idea what was once attractive about the place and still want to come here. It's a mystery to me.

In the end, I survived. Not quite sure how.

*bitterness is fabricated. Day was enjoyable mostly due to company. But record heat and drought is definitely taking its toll.

I had a noon turnaround time and a minute later I headed back to my vehicle. Lessons learned, I'll need more than 3 hrs.,long pants, and one hiking pole. Sugarloaf attempt was fun. The ridgeline you aren't on always looks better until you are on it. I forgot how much I liked this area. Luckily, I was able to find 2 dollar bills,2 quarters and 5 dimes. I didn't cry today, but I could have if I wanted to.

My 1st trip to Spur Cross in multiple years. Also my 1st hike in the greater PHX area in about 6 months. Did a loop from AT. Therefore, you know it wasn't my idea. 😜

Temps were better than any of those from all these lengthy drives. Too bad it won't stay yet. Least cars I've.seen before in this lot. Paid our $3 and jumped on Spur Cross.

We then started climbing up Elephant Mtn trail. The high point is at 3,150 ft. You can see where the daring leave the trail from here. I marked a way point. 🤪 Next we ascended some stairs. As we neared the parking lot, we veered up Metate, followed by the old road back to the parking area.

Beautiful day to be outside. Warm but not yet ridiculously hot. Lots and lots of wildflowers. Mainly brittlebush, but also some purple. Also lots of fuscia cactus blooms! So lovely! This loop also has many stately saguaros. 🌵💚

Not too many people on elephant mountain trail, 2 groups, 6 people total. Lots and lots of people on Spur Cross.

Plenty of parking available in the huge lot.

After a week at sea level, I needed to break myself back in slowly with a few more miles and gain. After getting some beauty sleep and an 8 am start, the Jewel of the Creek lot was full, but I got a spot with someone pulling out.

As expected, the area around was crowded with families and Instagram folks. Once I got into Spur Cross, I only saw a few groups. Temperatures were nice, and there were many different varieties of flora blooming.

I made the saddle at Elephant Mountain and started down. I had planned on a longer hike today, but with little breeze and it getting warmer, I cut it short. A half hour later, the winds picked up.

Back in the Jewel of the preserve area, I encountered the masses that came out after me. I also encountered my first diamondback of the year.

Did the counterclockwise loop with Tortuga / Elephant Mountain / Spur Cross, and made it to the summit of Elephant Mountain as well. Interesting rock wall there, I’m assuming was leftovers from Native Americans?

Nice hike out at Spur Cross. I always forget how wonky the trail is on this hike. One minute you feel like you’re heading towards the parking lot and then suddenly you’re going back the opposite direction. We had great weather. No desert creatures spotted on this hike.

I wanted to check out the flora and water situation out in the Spur Cross area.

Starting from the Jewel of the Creek Preserve TH, you could hear Cave Creek running almost immediately. This is a special little riparian area.

Dragonfly Trail to the Spur Cross Trail to the Elephant Mountain Trailto Limestone Trail. The farther in, the more diverse and plentiful the flowers were.

I took a brief break at the Elephant Mountain saddle to cool off in the breeze before jumping on the Limestone Trail. Limestone could use a bit of trimming as it does not get a lot of traffic.

Back down at Cave Creek the Good Friday family crowd was enjoying playing in and around the water.

The rest was just a jaunt back to the TH.

I hadn't hiked the Elephant Mt. trail a good 20 years, and my memories were of it being extremely steep with very loose scree. This turned out to be much easier than I remember. Good idea to go back to trails after so many years (decades?) to refresh your memory.

I met Brian at the Spur Cross TH at about 6:30am. It was still very dark and just windy enough to want to wear gloves, which I took off after a half mile, as usual. We did a clockwise loop from Spur Cross on the Spur Cross Trail to Elephant Mt, then Limestone to Cave Creek and back to the TH. On the way out to the bottom of the Elephant Mt trail, we met several trail runners who were running the Aravaipa race that day, which was either a 50 or 35 MILE route from the CCRA. :o

At the saddle of the Elephant Mt Trail we took the "closed area" spur to the lower peak and checked out the views and the ruins. The views there were the highlight of the day. From that peak there were good views to check the route to the Elephant Mt summit, which looked doable, although still challenging. the visible trail at the bottom was encouraging. 20 years ago I don't know that any of these trails or routes existed, but I may have easily missed them if they were there as I was a novice then.

Once we got down off Elephant Mt we headed out on the Limestone Trail which we almost immediately regretted since it's so rocky and slow going. the further we got along, the more I remembered from my previous hikes the last 4 years. My main takeaway was that I knew why I decided to do this route clockwise so that we weren't burnt out by the time we got to the base of Elephant Mt.

We only saw 2 hikers on Limestone, a couple with their dog who were from out of state visiting. On the Cave creek trail on the way back we ran into several people, many of whom asked for directions to the trails they wanted to get to. It was very strange that the temperature along the Cave Creek Trail seemed cooler than the higher elevations on the Limestone.

We finished up around noon and I had lunch at the picnic tables there before I headed out. Very nice weather for the day and very cool to check out an area I had never been to before.

Belated post. Got an invite from Chris to do a hike in the Spur Cross area. It’s been awhile since I’d been out there or seen Chris. So a double win. Got on the trail around 6:30am. Thought with the early start that we would have the trail to ourselves, but ended up going “upstream” to an Aravaipa event an encountered 30+ runners on their way out to 7 Springs :o . Knowing how big those events can be 30+ runners isn’t that bad. Still, it was nice to get on the southern section of the Elepahant trail and off Aravaipa’s route.

The Spur Cross Preserve has a wide range of trails and Elephant Mountain is in the middle. It is difficult in its remoteness and elevation change, but it is one of the easier trails to follow. The south side is a little less challenging than the north side, primarily due to the rate of elevation change. Doing the side trail at the saddle and visiting the ruins was a first. Dry cool.

Limestone is probably the most difficult, official trail in the Preserve due to its remoteness, ruggedness and trail finding challenges. There is a wash crossing that gets me every time. I know approximately where the trail is suppose to come out of the wash, but I can never get to that point without some backtracking. For some reason I always think this trail goes west of Sugar Loaf and Chris was saying “no, Brian, I’m pretty sure it runs east of it.” Danged, if he wasn’t right. At least, I’ll remember for a few months. Even though it was rugged back there, it was beautiful! Though I was thinking the saguaros on the slopes were not looking as healthy as I hoped.

Hiking back along the creek was pleasant. Always love hiking next to running water. Always fun to rock hop across. Quite a few challenges along this route. Managed most of them successfully. Chris initially tried, but his hiking boots aren’t designed for such delicate negotiations. So after one mishap, he ended up blazing across haphazardly. He noted that they were water proof :)

It was fun catching up with Chris and revisiting this county/wilderness preserve.

Phil and I took this loop counter-clockwise which is our preferred direction for the Elephant Mtn loop. Cave Creek was filled with several inches of water but the two planked bridge was well above the flow. I felt like we were back in Sherwood Forest as dozens of other hikers were trying to cross from both directions. The main purpose of this triplog is to comment on the some 200 hikers we met on this loop. Both parking lots were full. I don’t think I’ve seen anywhere near that number on any hike I’ve ever done, even the 19 mile down and back through the Grand Canyon. Bicyclists, yes, but not hikers. Guessing median age of 25 years, not one of them carrying sticks. Mostly in groups of ten to twenty but many singles and doubles scattered among them. One woman was hiking with what may have been her grandchildren who were in their 20’s so she was of a certain age, could have been my daughter. Nice to see people using the park.

I had not been hiking in Spur Cross yet this year, so we decided to go out and hike up to Elephant Mountain. To mix it up a bit, we started and ended the hike at the Jewel of the Creek Preserve.

We started by doing a semi-loop in Jewel of the Creek before heading to the Spur Cross Conservation area. We did a CW loop and stopped at the saddle below Elephant Mountain. We then scrambled our way to the Elephant Mountain summit. There was some steep and slippery scree to deal with, along with a short section of class 2+ climbing. There are great views at the summit, so at least there is a good payoff for the effort to get there.

There was a good bit of mud on the trail in the morning, and for a while I felt like I was hiking with ankle weights on. Fortunately, the mud was all gone on the way back. I guess that there was a decent amount of rain there last night, and I would not have gone out there this morning had I known that it was so muddy; but the mud sure dried up fast once the sun was out for a bit.

Beautiful day to be in the Spur Cross area! Started out very windy but calmed down to a nice breeze that kept us cool when it heated up. Not too many people out until we got back close to the trailhead. Saw a Gila Monster!

We'd had Chalk Canyon on our list for quite a while and decided to make that our main destination today. We started at Spur Cross Ranch Trailhead, and there was a lot more water in Cave Creek than expected...water levels were a lot lower in late December when we hiked to the Skull Mesa ruins, and I don't remember any significant rainfall since then. Regardless, it was nice to see.

It was mostly fast, pleasant miles on the hike to the ruins, with comfortable temperatures and a lot of wildflowers and birds. After we left Cave Creek Trail and approached the ruins site, we started to see increasing concentrations of pottery sherds and petroglyphs. One of the first petroglyphs we saw east of the ruins was a human figure with a zigzag pattern leading toward a spiral/circle of life engraved in the rock. Always fun to guess the meaning behind the drawings...

We spent some time exploring the ruins on the west edge of the mesa. We had the site to ourselves, and it offered a different perspective looking up at the ridge with the Skull Mesa ruins to the north. A lot of the walls were deteriorated at this site, but it was a large complex, and a few rooms had taller, more intact walls with some mortar still visible. One long, narrow room had a doorway made of white rocks that stood out from the darker ones that made up the other walls and virtually all the other structures, and it looked like rocks had been stacked loosely in modern times to block off the doorway for some reason.

After exploring the ruins, we dropped down off the west edge of the mesa toward the trail and Cave Creek below. It was a steep, loose descent in places, especially near the top, but we were able to avoid the brush almost entirely and saw more pottery and a few petroglyphs on the way down the slope. The area at the bottom was the highlight of the site, with an impressive concentration of petroglyphs and metates/rock slicks.

A set of three large boulders were covered in various petroglyphs on the tops and sides, and one vertical panel had one of the largest human figures I've seen, at 2+ feet tall. Others nearby had spirals and various symbols carved all over the flat tops. As we explored the area, we counted ~10 metates, several with grinding stones, and many more petroglyphs and pot sherds...a really nice area.

[ youtube video ]
[ youtube video ]

As we hiked back toward the trailhead, we took Metate Trail and checked out the namesake metates and the pool while dodging the crowds. Other than coming down the steep side of the mesa, it was quick, easy miles, and with a lot of afternoon remaining, we headed toward Elephant Mountain to see how far we could get with our remaining time. @TboneKathy waited below the saddle while I headed for the peak. I came up a little short, about a quarter mile from the summit, before I ran out of time and decided to turn around, but getting up as far as I did provided a nice vantage point to see the Elephant Mountain ruins on the ridge below, so it was a worthwhile effort even if I'll have to come back again to reach the peak.

[ youtube video ]

On the hike out, @TboneKathy nearly stepped on a Gila monster before seeing it at her feet...I don't usually think of those as blending in very well with their orange stripes, but she somehow missed it :). About a mile from the trailhead a helicopter was circling overhead, and we could see emergency vehicles with lights flashing in the parking lot. The helicopter landed over there and took off again and circled a few more times, and it continued repeating that cycle once we back and packing up at our vehicle. There were three fire trucks (one that said "Heavy Rescue" on the side) and two ambulances, and we weren't sure if it was an active rescue or a training exercise with the way the helicopter kept coming and going.

It was a fun hike, and the area below the ruins, especially, exceeded expectations. We had comfortable weather, great scenery, and the hike up to Elephant Mountain was a nice bonus that wasn't part of the original plan...and, fortunately, no Gila monsters were injured during the hike :).

I had a nice little hike planned with a gentleman this morning but he called in sick. :( I still needed to hike but had no desire to get out of bed. So I mustered up a little motivation, [ youtube video ] and headed on out. I went up Cave Creek and did a CCW loop using Limestone Trail #252. Every time I hike on this trail I say "never again" because the tread is so bad. The beautiful views and solitude always bring me back though.

I stopped at Limestone Spring to catch my breath and then slogged over the saddle and down towards Page Spring. Just after the spring I picked up a cholla grenade on my instep which required un-booting and de-stickering my foot. I would have been screwed without my tweezers.

I got off trail for a bit after that but soon found my way again thanks to Route Scout and the footprints of @Nightstalker 's posse and harem which came through here a couple of weeks ago.

I saw that the desert was starting to leaf out and things should really start looking good in about another month. The parking lot enlargement and upgrades with new curbs looks complete and they have also built a new signed trail from the upper parking lot to the lower lot and TH at the "Jewel Of The Creek" so folks don't have to walk on the road.

Doctor day for Cathy so I went back to the ridge above Black Mesa Creek to hopefully find some new (to me) petroglyphs. I saw the ones I found earlier this year but nothing new. I also went farther north this time and visited some collapsed Hohokam ruins. The recent rains have uncovered lots of pottery shards at this location... so much that I had to watch my step so as not to break anything.

I took a detour on my way back to the parking lot to find the park's game camera @Sun_Ray was looking for yesterday. It's gone again. I could see the marks in the tree bark were it was mounted however. I sure hope no one stole it.

The weather was perfect for the hike and didn't see anyone until the very end as I was coming down Tortuga. There were two groups of octagenarians, about 14 in total creeping up that steep grade. Good on them. :app: I hope I'm still able to do that in fifteen years.

Did the loop counter clockwise this morning. Lots of water in Cave Creek made the crossings a challenge. Limestone trail 252 was much easier to follow than I remember from past hikes. Lots of cars in the parking lot. Gate attendant collection the $3 entry fee. He told me I could use my Maricopa Parks Pass for entry, which had not been my understanding, but I'm happy to use it. Great day for a hike. Threatening clouds but no rain.

Obligations at home have precluded me from doing much hiking this year so when I learned I'd have today to do something I made it happen. Elephant Mountain is close to home and would give me a much needed workout. @Walkingbambam expressed an interest in doing this hike earlier in the year so I PM'd him last week but he never opened it up. I hope I haven't been put on the "ignore" list by yet another HAZ'r. 8-[

The tread is as awful as ever and they've even added more ankle rollers to the trail to patch up last years erosion. For being a "non-maintained" trail a lot of work has been done to it since I last hiked it. Most noteworthy is the fact that the "Boy Scout" stairs on the east side of the loop have finally been fixed with new rebar and wood where needed. I thought my quads were in good shape from doing squats at home...they're not. :( Those stairs ate my lunch.

I went CW for a change of pace but it was a mistake. Going CCW is a bit steeper but it's better to go up the bad sections of trail than down in my opinion. Lot's of slipping and sliding today! I saw no one on the climb up to the saddle but someone was flying a drone over the "fortress" and the summit of Elephant. What a godawful noise. I stopped for lunch at Ringneck Spring on the north side of the loop. The ground was wet but the area where the hand pump and pipe reside was too overgrown with catclaw to check out. Clippers will be needed.

I find it humorous that they rate this trail as "Double Black Diamond, Extremely Difficult" (sounds like a ski run). :) If a 10 pound overweight 66 year old with COPD can creep around it at 2mph it can't be that tough. HAZ has it at 2.5. I'd rate it a bit harder just due to the tread conditions.

It was nice to get out but it did get very warm quickly. Come on fall!

The Cottonwoods and Sycamores at the "Jewel of the Creek" are just starting to turn. Two to three weeks till prime.

It's been awhile, so off to Spur Cross. It'd been almost 10 years to the day that I last hiked this with @Tortoise_Hiker.
Remembering the rocky conditions, I pondered my choices for footwear. The worn out Salomon's, the new but lighter Asics, or new, heavier, but more sturdy Adidas. The Adidas were the correct choice.

47 degrees o start with a calm wind. I was shocked to be only the 4th car in the lot at 7:30ish. Spur Cross -> Tortuga -> Elephant Mountain Trail. Not much has changed here. Easy to follow and hike roads turning to trails.

Once off of Elephant Mountain Trail the trail gets thinner and thinner to the Black Mesa summit. There are cairns most of the way, but the tall grass covers up both the Rock Cairns and the plain ole' hidden rocks. I call them volcanic grapefruit. Those are the ones that play havoc on your ankles.

Up top on Black Mesa, I made my way over to New River Mesa to check it out. On the east rim I found the set of glymphs with various ancient vandalism carved into them, as well as a grinding slick.

I made my way south across Black Mesa, kicking up a white tail. The plan was to exit down south ridgeline towards Sugarloaf Mountain. Part way down I got cliffed out and pondered my choices. Going farther to the west looks like it MIGHT have worked out, but being solo (and an old fart) I opted for the downclimb farther to the East. It was still a steep, slippery and slow off trail down climb.

I ultimately hopped into a canyon/wash that ran into the Elephant Mountain Trail.

I was a little warm at the end of the day with full sun and no breeze. I think I'm done with Black Mesa for another 10 years.
