The White Mountains have nice hiking trials of all lengths. This one is mostly through dense forest skirting a couple nice meadows. The first 2+ miles are mostly flat and easy. The last 3/4 miles descend to the Black River. From the top it looks a ways down but the descent is not too steep, which means the ascent back up will not be that bad. Before you know it, you are at the river. Saw no others the entire hike and was the only car at the trail head.

Made a special weekend camping trip to Big Lake area just to do this trail. What a great trail. Very flat, very easy. Just follow the river. Awesome scenery. Saw a few fly fishermen and one other couple starting out as we headed back. Anyone in this neck of the state must see this trail.

After dropping into the canyon I only went about 15 minutes up the trail. Dark clouds were approaching from the distance from behind and I also had my wife back at the trailhead reading a book (she broke her foot last month) so decided to cut the hike off. Will go back another day to complete the trail and do some exploring.

Perfect day with mostly sunny skies and puffy white clouds floating by. I thought the first half mile or so was a bit bland, but then the meadows opened up, the trees began bending in the breeze, and the flowing creek came into view. Many little cascades and a fairly good current. Met up with a small boy scout troup at the spring head. As the saying goes, boys will be boys, and they seemed to be having a great time while also being respectful. It was my first time on this trail and overall it was pretty enjoyable. I suspect at some point I will be on it again.

Great morning to be outdoors. Starting from the parking area at Pinnacle Peak Rd went in a clockwise direction up, over, and down the mountain that is just to the south (trail H2 I think). Once down, at intersection where the bridge crosses to the north mountain trail loop, I reversed direction to go counter-clockwise on the H1 trail around the base of the south mountain over to the wetlands area and Arrowhead Lakes sub-division. Then reversed again to go clockwise around the mountain to get back to the Pinnacle Peak parking lot. Typical for this trail system, lots of people on the loop trails that go up the mountains but nobody on the base trail in the wetlands area.

The small parking lot at the trailhead was full. Supposedly a Tonto Pass is required for this area, but not a single car had one displayed. As for the trail ... right away you skirt above the seven springs campground which appeared a bit trashy. The walk along the creek was quiet and peaceful. The water level seemed a bit low especially in light of the wet spring. Went a bit beyond the first creek crossing, cut off the trail and found a nice spot of rocks to hang out on next to the creek. Then reversed back to the trailhead. Thought there would be more wildflowers but they were non-existent. Only passed few hikers all afternoon which was surprising since parking area was full.

First time hiking in this area. Lots of people on trail but they were well spaced so it did not have a crowded feeling. I thought trail was is good condition. The creek it the pools area had a slow flow which made for some minor waterfalls over the boulders. A thoroughly enjoyable experience.

On a separate note, our GPS registered 3.1 miles from Catalina Park parking lot to the pools. Talked to another hiker at the pools and he was also registering over 3 miles. Books and articles all tend to list distance as 2.6 miles to pools. Has anyone else taking readings recently. Just curious.

Hard to rate this one. You start in an elementary school parking lot and immediately skirt along chain link fencing that separates the mountain from residential areas, a strong reminder that this is an urban trail. Trail splits a lot but you always end up back on the main trail. You get decent views in all directions as you climb but too often I found my eyes wandering back to the myriad of houses and sub-divisions going up around the mountain. Hiked what is classified as the advanced trail and got a decent sweat going but it was not that difficult. Many on trail today - hikers, joggers, dog walkers, and a few mountain bikers.

Decided to check this out after hiking the Camp Creek Trail just down the road. Lots of ruins, or should I say reconstructed foundations with informative signs explaining the ancient purpose of each - nice for a history lesson but otherwise the site was not all that impressive to me. Views from the top of hill are pretty good.

Wanted a short hike close to home and this sounded interesting. With blue skies,a slight breeze and temps in the low 60's you could not have had a better day to be out. Came across nobody else on the trail, and only saw one other group down by the fall which worked out great as we swapped camera's doing the proverbial 'can you take our picture'. Played around at the fall for a bit and explored about 1/4 mile upstream above the fall.

Very nice trail. Did not spend as much time taking in the scenery as I would have liked as intermittent clouds/drizzle/rain had been rolling through Payson all day and I did not want to get caught in the next round of rain bursts. Hiked in a counter-clockwise direction starting on the north trail. Saw no other hikers but did come across about 5 or 6 ATVs towards the end in the sand flats area of the south trail. Had to pause a bit here to determine which way to go as this appears to be a favorite ATV area and tracks shot in all directions.

On a side note, also enjoyed the drive to the trailhead down a scenic Granite Dells Rd, the last 5 miles being dirt. Saw some deer grazing in an open area on the way out.

Was out playing tourist and walked the south rim paved pathway from visitor center to bright angel, then down bright angel about 1 mile. Was shocked on return walk when I came across some bighorn resting along south rim pathway. Actually I walked right by when another fellow told me to retrace my steps 100 yards and peak through the rocks/shrubs. I can't imagine how many hundreds of tourists walked by oblivious to these magnificent creatures being only feet away.

Hadn't done this trail in a couple years. First of all, the straight-on hill climb at the begining has been re-routed to a series of very nice switchbacks. Much easier than before. Second, just past the summit of the old hill climb, to the left of the trail, used to be a nice mine shaft. Now the switchbacks skirt you way around this. Unless you hiked this trail before the re-route, you would never know the mine is near you. Third, I was half-expecting to find the growing urban sprawl of North Phoenix and Cave Creek begin to creep in. To my delight, the mountains surrounding the trail still screen out the housing boon for the majority of the hike - in other words, the trail still gives a great sense of 'out in the middle of nowhere'. Lastly, I tracked the trail on a Garmin Etrex GPS. The exact reading came to 5.93 miles.

Started from Dreamy Draw parking area and headed east about 2.5 miles before turning back. Temps in low 60's with a bright blue sky and a big warm sun . . . another Arizona winter day!! Trails were in full use with lots of mountain bikers, joggers, hikers, hikers with pets, and riders on horse.

Being that this was a Saturday morning and because this is such a popular hike I wanted to get to the trail early. We pulled into the parking lot around 8:45, a little later than I had hoped, but to my surprise there was only 1 other car. Where were all the people? Unbelieveably we had the trail to ourselves.

Hiked at a leisurely pace, took tons of photos, and made it to the point where the trail disappears. I assume this was the 3 mile point.

About 1/2 hour into the return we finally began passing hikers. The trail traffic (and noise) really picked up for the final mile. Back at the trailhead we found the parking lot full and a line of cars out to the highway waiting for openings. Glad we got started when we did. Overall, this was a great hike on a gorgeous day.
