Part of our (with my son, Ben) AZT segment hike (Flagstaff to Mormon Lake). We came down from Fisher Point, and went through Sandys Cayon to the AZT split off.

It was sad to see the fire damage, but good to know it stopped there.

The cave below Fisher Point had a hornet nest.

2nd day of a BP expedition around the canyon. Staring at the Dorsey junction we went south to Winter Cabin, then back up Hog Hill to the car. Mosquitoes were fierce. Parts of Kelsey starting to get overgrown. May have cured my son's friend of backpacking. Didn't mean to...

The boys (my son and his friend) wanted to backpack "someplace cold", and this was as far north as I would take a novice. Got clobbered with rain around Babe's Hole. Did the Little LO sans packs, and they were still demoralized by the hike out. Ended up making camp near the Dorsey trail junction.

Springs all ran strong. Nothing amiss with the trail save for mud.

This would have been an easy hike except for the 35 mph winds. My poor daughter nearly froze to death.
Found a multi-stage geocache, despite gale-force gusts at the edge of the mesa.
The kids got too far ahead and missed the road that cuts across the bank of Vail,so we ended up following them around the ridge a bit. Fine, except it kept getting colder. We were getting bits of snow by the time we reached the trailhead.

My time is round trip with some little legs.

Still made it back to an Irish pub in Flagstaff for the second half of Game 3. Can't askfor more than that.

Took the whole family, plus dogs. Only the boys made it all the way.
Loving my new Garmin 60CSx that I bought on sale at REI.
Wind was a problem, but otherwise, this trail was as fine as advertised.

Everything that went wrong on this hike - bad camera setting, blisters, running out of water and daylight - was entirely my fault. Of te trail itself, I have no complaints. Dry Beaver Creek had running water for most of its course, including some huge pools near the end of the trail. Had I gotten there at 3pm instead of 5pm, I might have done some skinny-dipping, because I had the place to myself.

Came in from the west, and made a loop of it: length of Brin to Cibola Pass to Jordan to Soldier's Pass back up to Brin. Found the spur to the caves. Guidebook pace. Good hike.

Went with a friend and our sons up to the creek crossing and back. I went the extra 1/10 mile to the big swimming hole, and he didn't. His loss: it was full of twenty-something girls in bikinis.

My son and I did this as a backpacking trip, but there's little we saw that you couldn't see in an aggressive dayhike. The burn zones are starting to fill in with saplings and underbrush, so while there's no shade, you'll still have plenty of greenery at your elbows.

All the springs above Nelson were dry, but we did find some deep pools of water in the creek-beds, and skeeters feasted while we filled bottles to take back to camp to treat. Not really recreational, so we axed our option of a second night.

We did bag Pine Mountain - which is a 500' climb from the Verde Rim trail, and worth the trouble.

If only my GPS hadn't gone kablooey at the trailhead!

Without a functioning GPS to double-check our logic, we misinterpreted my topo (actually a copy of the one here) and camped maybe a mile east of the Secret Campsite, which we found later that morning.

We didn't try to find the shortcut - but just returned via the Nelson.

Oh, and if you left your sleeping bag just shy of the Verde Rim / Nelson Trail junction, its still hanging in the tree.

Took some middle-graders geo-caching, and then went with the oldest down to the south end. Great hike for that age group!

Took my son (to whom I have owed this hike for some time) and my dog. Found out the hard way that my dog, who will play for hours in his backyard in Phoenix on summer afternoons, turns into a pansy on the trail when the temp gets above 90. Practically had to drag him down the last half mile of the trail. Waited until nearly dark to hike out, and that went a lot better.
Of course, he basically sat in the creek for two hours.

Found most of the springs. My son loves springs. Splashed around. Shivered (Phoenicians).

For some reason the trailhead and the first mile were a cloud of gnats. If you stopped to do anything for 10 continuous seconds your face would be full of them. Happily, they were gone by the time we returned.

Really quite crowded. A lot of creative parking at the TH. Passed a group of teenagers hiking down with sleeping bags under their arms.

Last trip for the hiking guide. It's all writing now...

water 1 out of 5water 2 out of 5water 3 out of 5water 4 out of 5 Fossil Springs Gallon + per minute Gallon + per minute
The first big spring flows, as always, like a ruptured water main. All the other springs were merrily dumping water as well.

I did this as an overnight 6/16 and 6/17. My readings had the trip at around 11 miles from trailhead to river. No matter how rocky you imagine Haqrdscrablle Mesa to be, its' rockier than that, meaning the first six miles.

I was also mislead by the corral. Stupid cows...
I did see a fair bit of deer, especially around the tanks.

About 1.25 miles from the river, already on your way down the serious descent, you encounter a sign held in place by rocks. If you follow the obvious trail to your left, you go to the Verde. If you follow the cairns to the right, you go to Fossil Creek. The FC route is a bit of a bushwhack, but just a bit. They are both about the same distance.

I chose the cairns to Fossil Creek.

So it appears that Deadman and Verde 11 do meet. I was not, however, able to follow the trail very far upstream along Fossil Creek, being preoccupied with the need to get in the water and stay in the water. It was a bit warm coming down....

It didn't get below 70 until well after midnight.

Next morning I tried to find the confluence of Verde and FC, and ended up on a two hour bushwhack up and around the mountain, which used up a lot of energy that I, in retrospect, probably didn't have to spare. Anyway, the fluctuations (read flooding) of Fossil Creek have wiped out any trails downstream. I stumbled onto the Verde Trail about a half mile up from the river at 9am. Went down and topped off my water, and was back marching uphill by 10 am.

You gain 2000 feet in the first two miles coming out.
I had to filter water out of a cattle tank to keep from running out before I reached the top.
Couldn't make up any time over the Field of Broken Boots. Hit the trail head at 5:30pm.

Took this hike with the boy (11) and the dog (lab retriever). The Geronimo trail is mostly old roadbed, but I encountered no signs of recent vehicle activity. Don't put a lot of faith in the mileage given on the signs.

Here's a puzzler, ablut 4 miles up, we encountered the signed junction with the "Rimview Trail" though we could not discern an actual trail. The sign indicated it went east and eventually hit the Highline around Poison Springs. Not on an maps I own, and we couldn't pick it out from the ferns and deadwood.

Got to the first spring, and the dog and boy were done. Didn't know we were so close to the second, or I would've pushed them a little more. Hi-ho. I still feel I have reason to live.

Better hike than I expected, actually. Not quite the quality experience of Horton, but much less crowded.

I found a dirt bike trail heading west from the cabin yard (follow the fenceline from the dirt road)to a cement cattle tank, where it turned south, up and over the hill, and then down to the corral.
