This was a fairly easy hike of 0.5 mile to the ridgeline and 0.5 miles back to the trailhead. Having become fascinated with ancient Indian ruins, I had planned on doing this hike for sometime. It was a little cool when I left and the half mile hike to the plateau was uneventful. I was amazed at how dry the area is and while the fire signs said there was a moderate fire danger, the entire area looked like a tinder box. The ruins looked like the typical Hohokam ruins you can see in Phoenix and around the valley. The area is not as isolated as it was 900 years ago because in some directions you can see new homes being built on the hillsides and power lines on the eastern side. You also can see 4 Peaks, the Superstitions, and Weaver's Needle. This is a great educational hike for children and I intend to go again with my grandchildren in tow. There are signs at the ruins explaining what the rooms are and they are most helpful.

This is a must do hike if you go to Canyon De Chelly, and if you live in Arizona you have to go to Canyon De Chelly. It was a drop in altitude of approximately 500' and a fairly good trail all the way down. It had rained recently so the last half mile or so was a little messy because of mud and standing water. White House Ruins makes the entire trip worth it. You cannot get close to the ruins but they are still spectacular. They rival any ancient ruins I have seen thus far in Arizona. The hike out is not too bad even though it is mostly uphill. A person in fair physical condition should be able to handle the hike out without a problem.

Walnut Canyon is not a traditional hike in the sense that the trail is paved, has steps, and handrails along most of the route. However, it is straight down into Walnut Canyon which of course means the way out is straight up. You will pass several Indian ruins, some of which you can enter. It is advisable to take water because while there is shade, it can also get quite hot on the hike in and out. For historians, archeologists and people interested in Indian history before Europeans, this short hike is a dream.

This is a very good "stay in shape" hike that can be done in less than an hour. The road is paved and while there can be a lot of people and pets on the mountain it is no where close to the crowds on Piestawa Peak. It is also a good mountain to improve your conditioning because as your wind and legs get used to the steady uphill climb you can start to push yourself to go faster and improve your cardio. Sunrise viewed from this mountain can be a nice early morning show.

This was a great hike for me since I was rehabbing a surgically repaired ankle, leg, and knee. My only problem was that I started late and consequently wound up finishing during the heat of the early afternoon. The hiking route was easy to follow and there was a fair amount of traffic on the route, particularly in the beginning. The hike was moderately strenuous, not to be taken by anyone who has been couch exercising for a long time. I used two liters of water on this hike and could have used another because by noon it was pretty hot. All in all a great hike and a splendid workout for my knee and ankle.
