Been meaning to head back to the Maricopas for a while. After one wrong turnoff of hwy 85, we found Woods Rd, and headed East. Kyle's truck scraped its way in, almost to the trailhead, and we were off. The hike to the drainage we ascended was mostly flat and uneventful. The drainage itself was fairly easy going, but the higher reaches of Sheep Mountain were gravely and loose underfoot. There are some really good places to camp on one of those saddles up there, if one felt like lugging a full pack all that way. It was a slow afternoon but we made it to the top without any real trouble. What a view! Lunch felt well-deserved. We slowly picked our way down a drainage and made it back to the truck after a long, flat hike back to Margie's Cove. I was home by dinnertime. I opted for hightops today instead of my usual trail runners and I have finally concluded that Oboz makes pretty awful boots.

Planned to hit the trail earlier to meet Kyle for the second half of his Thanksgiving in the Mazzies trip. A early morning flat tire delayed things and I didn't hit the trail until about noon. Slowly made my way up Barnhardt, cruised towards Chilson, then got slowed down by the grassy section coming up to the Divide. Saw some deer, but not a human being the whole way, and made it to Horse Camp Seep around 5. That last stretch was gorgeous in the waning light. By that time I was starving. Kyle and a pooped Lily had collected firewood, and set things up nicely. I inhaled my Thanksgiving leftovers warmed up in foil by the fire, hung out for a bit, and settled in for the night. The temps were perfect. Slept in, and enjoyed coffee and breakfast by the fire before heading out a little before 10. Got a bit warm on the walk up the overgrown stretch near Chilson, but the rest of the hike was perfect. A nice little 24-hr trip. I needed it.

First real attempt at hiking with Luna and Karen. Had breakfast at the Phoenix Public Market cafe for fuel. Kept the hike short for an unlikely meltdown or poopslposion escape. None occurred. Luna was so excited by the walk that she passed out for 15 minutes of it. Maybe next time real mileage?

Warmer than I thought, but got to see a new part of the Supes. Legs are shredded from overgrowth. Ran into some electrolyte trouble, but I twirled my parasol, sang some Michael McDonald and all was well.

Got an early start to check out the apples. On the way in we met a father and son who had moved to higher ground overnight for cell service. One of their group had gotten bit by a rattler late Friday night, so they separated from the larger group to call for a rescue. We came upon the larger group about an hour later. The little guys (all aged 9-12ish) were in decent enough shape after the ordeal the night before, but the adult with them was certainly done. Some cowboys told us about the trash the group had left behind, and said their saddlebags didn't have enough room for it all. We packed the rest out on our way back. The boys' attempt at a stretcher was comical. The amount of garbage they left was not. We gave them the benefit of the doubt on account of the crisis.

The Ranch was cool, windy, and filled with flowers and apples, the makings of a very pleasant lunch break. The apples was really tasty, especially the green ones. Some organic baby food is in the works with these. The creek was surprisingly dry. After filling up, fixing a problem toenail, and grabbing some apples, we headed back the way we came. A little warm on the hike out of the Reavis Valley, but the downhill was pleasant with the help of a light breeze, and the views were gorgeous as always.

This was my second trip to the San Pedro Parks. I really needed a slow-paced, low-mileage weekend of fishing and relaxing. Spent Thursday night in Albuquerque, did some shopping and exploring.

4th of July morning, drove North on 550, meeting my buddy Bonita at the trailhead at 10am. Some sprinkles on the hike in, then bright sunshine for a while. This trail (Palomas Trail) has all of its elevation gain in the first mile or so. Very pleasant hike through Spruce forest and high parkland most of the way. A Biblical deluge hit around 3pm, forcing us into our shelters for about an hour and a half. Incredible lightning, thunder, rain, hail and sleet. I have never experienced a storm quite like it not in the safety of a house or car. When it was all over, the ground was saturated, as was almost all our gear. Luckily my down sleeping bag made it through unscathed. Friday night was wet but warm. Storms threatened all weekend, so we spent much of Saturday keeping wood dry and tending a fledgling fire, which finally roared to full flame that evening. Rio Grande Cutthroat Trout were aggressively biting on Caddis, and we bagged the limit in no time. Dinner was tasty. Rum and hot chocolate aplenty, a guitalele, and some old songs finished the night.

Bonita hiked out early Sunday. Fished some more Sunday morning before some storms threatened in the early afternoon. By this time my stupid dog was showing signs of stomach issues, so I decided to bail. It was only 4.5 miles back to the car, but she had a real hard time. Glad I left when I did. Every time I take her, the threshold for NOT taking her on a trip gets lower. Spent Sunday night in Bernalillo, and sure enough, she puked in the hotel room. Elk poop and grass, yum.

Glad I made it back there. Will certainly go back and explore more. I would like to see more of this place. Next time, no dog, more fishing. Oh, I left my party lights hanging from a spruce at camp. Off to REI I go. And two of my toenails fell off.

Egg sandwiches from Vantastic Donuts in hand, on the road by 5:15am. Bull Pen devoid of people upon arrival. Began hiking around 7:30. An apprehensive Lily learned to stream cross along the way. Misha as usual swam herself silly. About 4 miles in, I decided to turn back as we were above the creek, it was getting warm, and I didn't want a repeat of Misha's disaster last May. Headed back towards the creek, had some lunch, cast a dry fly into a pool just for fun, and made for the parking lot. About a half-mile from the car Misha completely gave out. After a rest in the water , and a second attempt, she refused to walk after another tenth of a mile, just laying down in the middle of the trail. Carried her on my back (with Kyle's assistance) the rest of the way to the lot.

When I dropped her on the ground next to the car, she sprung up and excitedly begged for food from some day hikers in the lot. I was infuriated. "that dog just got a free ride back to the car" - Tough_Boots

Drove up through the smoke of the Slide Fire to the Pine Trailhead. Made our way up and over Milk Ranch Point, walking within a stone’s throw of a car camping spot I have used for years. The weather was perfect, with just the right mix of sun, clouds, and a bit of cool rain later in the day. Saw a few elk along the Highline segment. A good day in rim country.

Left the valley at 4am, and began hiking at 6:45. After some real struggles, finally reached the summit by around 11am. Almost turned around twice, but the summit was in view, and it seemed silly to give up. This mountain kicked my butt. I have been trapped in my house since the Mazzies trip in late March, so I was not really prepared for this. The elevation was the main issue, and I got back to the car with a massive headache, but well worth the effort.

My first trip into the Mazzies, and my first night out since my daughter was born in February. Missed my dog, but glad I left her home this time. The heat on the way in would have been too much. A few weeks of sleep deprivation, and warmer than expected temps made the steep hike in somewhat torturous, but we made it to Bear Saddle in a few hours. Thank god for Lily slowing others down a bit for me. ;) Had a relaxing afternoon and evening in camp, found decent water at Bear Spring, and slept my first 8-hour night in weeks. Just what I needed for the hike out. A nice morning fire with coffee and oatmeal got me recharged.

The loop around Mazatzal peak and down the Barnhardt Trail was a blast, and it was cool enough to be an almost flawless morning. I really enjoyed this one. Great scenery and no other hikers until Barnhardt Canyon. The rocky trails gave my ankles some trouble on the way out, so boots next time instead of trail runners. It was great to finally get to this area.

Drove up Saturday morning and explored the area some more. Car camped saturday night near Green's Peak along FR 117. Lots of cows, lots of campers, and some rain. Sunday met up with Eric, and hiked from the West Fork trailhead 3 miles to the West Fork of the Black River. Tons of afternoon rain and a raingear malfunction made for mixed pleasure and pain. Warm overnight with no rain. Next morning hiked out and eschewed another night of rainy backpacking for beer and backpacking food in a Springerville hotel. Tuesday morning hiked a little ways up the Baldy trail until the lightning became a threat, then bailed out for the long drive back to Hell.

Wednesday 3/20: Bright Angel Trailhead, 2pm. Overcast/hazy hike down to Indian Garden, making camp by 5:30pm. Windy night, dusty, hazy, warm. Had to improvise tarp rigging at Indian Garden. Thursday 3/21 : Left Indian Garden 10am, at Phantom Ranch 2pm. Clear Creek trail, 4:30pm, campsite just South of Sumner Point by 6:15pm. We noticed some evidence of campsite impact just to the West of the use area boundary. tsk tsk. I guess some people underestimate that elevation gain on the way up from Phantom Ranch. We certainly did! That last push to the dual cairns marking the use-area boundary was harsh. No signs of other backpackers. Clear, cool night. Bright moon, coyote howls, then abiding silence. Friday 3/22 : 6pm coffee, eggs and potatoes. Amazing sunrise. On the trail at 8am. Some trail magic : a Phantom Ranch camper from New York on a trip with his teenage son met us on our way down. Upon discovery of our East Coast roots, offered us French press coffee in his campsite. Awesome. South Kaibab TH by 10am. Appropriately caffeinated, we had lunch at 1pm just below The Tipoff. A tortuous, windy, dusty and at times, terrifying slog ensued, ending at exactly 6:01 pm at Yaki Point.

Took a dirt road North from HWY 238 to the horse staging area and parked at the road closure on the West side of the wilderness. No other cars. Began the hike at 5pm and walked across the bajada, reaching Butterfield pass around 8:30pm. Realized then that I had left my tent stakes with my tarp at home, and would need to improvise to set up my tarptent. Giant rocks were a godsend in this situation. Around 10pm, a tremendous boom shook the sky, not a cloud in sight. Sounded like thunder, but was more punctuated. I am assuming it was from a bombing range further South. Who knows. Whatever it was the dog was so freaked out that she cried and tried to get into the tent. Surprisingly warm, quiet night. Woke up with the sun and hiked the 9 miles back to the car, taking a more Northerly route out of the mountains. Fantastic morning walk. Dog got caught up in some evil cholla on the way through a deep wash and some impromptu surgery was in order. Mouth full of spines, blood, saliva, green cholla pulp, sad dog. Full extraction would have to wait until this evening. Made it back to the car around noon. Short backpack, but rejuvenating for the soul.
