Super hot. Lots of highway noise. Probably would be worth it in winter when you can get far from the highway quickly. Not so much in the summer.

Nothing new to add to the description- relentlessley uphill, beautiful, tons of bear scat in the lower sections, plenty of wildlife. There is an interesting section on Sixshooter that was very recently slurrey bombed, and you walk right through it. It took me a minute to figure it out, but the red stuff all over the rocks and plants was slurrey to knockdown the recent fire up there. The entire trail made is through safely, just that 400 yard stretch with some slurrey was affected.
Holy smokes is icehouse a steep trail! The lower section is pretty exposed and warm in the middle of summer, but I had great overcast weather for my trip, so I lucked out. Didn't see a soul on the trail over the weekend, and only had 1 other person at the campground at the top- and he'd driven up there. Nice and serene.
Lots of cow poop on the icehouse trail was gross. And sad. But I sure do like hamburgers.

Slightlydope and I had a quick overnighter planned to see Reavis Ranch before the business of life keeps us out of the game for awhile, so we made it out there this weekend. I had been to the Rogers Trough TH before, but he hadn't so it was an experience for him chugging up the road. It is still passable without 4WD, though I did pop it into 4WD for the last steep, rutted section just to make it easier.

The section of trail from the Rogers Canyon turnoff to the saddle was pretty steep, but surprisingly well groomed, especially since runoff would not go across the trail but down it in many places. It made for a nice steady climb to the saddle. We enjoyed catching our breath under the trees at the top since the earlier uphill was very exposed, and even though it was in the low 50s it could have been super hot there. We got to Reavis ranch by 1:30 and found a suitable spot to hang our hammocks in a little bit of shelter from the wind. We cut some super hard wood for a fire, which was important since it was going to be cold at night. Seemed like a lot of work for just the 2 of us- next time we'll bring help just for this. As soon as the sun got low, the temps dropped fast- from 48 to 31 in 90 minutes! Got the fire roaring and we were comfy until bedtime. The low of 29 was higher than we expected, but a nice first test of some new winter gear- toasty warm in the hammock. We busted hump out of there after a late start in the AM- slept in, no kids!

The ranch wasn't all that fantastic in my mind, but I think the time of year had a lot to do with it. It was nice to be in the pines so close to the city, but it just wasn't that pretty- didn't live up to the hype IMO. Maybe I'll try another time in the spring or fall.

Poppies were in abundance on the slopes along the road on the way home- a nice vista on the way out.

Did a little day hike with the boys and my wife. Just a beautiful area to see during the summer. Little bit of a drizzle while we were out gave way to a downpour the second we got back to the car. Great timing!

My wife and I did the Dorsey/Kelsy Winter/Hog Hill loop as a one night backpack, staying at Winter Cabin for the night. The roads (FR 231 and 538)to the TH were passable by any passenger vehicle- we took our minivan that bottoms out with about 4" of clearance. We did have to stop about .25 miles before the TH because where you turn off 538 onto 538E is surely high clearance. No biggie though. The trail down to Dorsey Spring is steep and rocky. This trail is fairly scenic, as you pass through ponderosa forest and gambel oaks. You do not get any big views of sycamore. If I rated this trail alone, it would be a 2 or 3. dorsey Spring is nice- several gallons per minute on this trip were flowing out of the pipe. We had lunch there and saw a gopher snake. Or rather, I stepped over a gopher snake and my wife leaped over it and showed me it was there. :)
We got a bit turned around searching for the Kelsey Winter Trail, but figured it out- you go to the right at the spring and through the campground area before you get to the intersection. This section of the trail was pretty crummy. There are a little bit of up and down sections, and then you get to the exposed section where it it pretty overgrown with locust and other grabby shrubs. Plus, there's no shade in sight. It was a pretty hot day, about 90 and this section stunk. You go over several rockslide areas as well. Not very exciting. This is also the only realy area where you get big canyon views, which isn't great when you're running for shade. When you get up into the Winter Cabin area the forest closes in and it is nice and shady again. This section of trail gets a 1 rating from me.
The Winter Cabin area is ok. The cabin is in bad shape and the camping area was a mess when we got there. I would expect an area that is that secluded to be in more pristine shape, but there was lots of litter that I cleaned up. Bear hunters were out en masse, which made for some consternation on my wife's part, as this was her first backpack trip. The Cabin Spring was seeping out of the ground and had a few bigger pools for filtering from, and cooling off the feet. Our night was peaceful and not a bear or even chipmunk visited us.
The Hog Hill trail was a leg burner for the first .3 miles, then it was a steady uphill for awhile. This trail is very faint in many areas and we were saved by flagging and cairns on a few occasions. This trail ascends into some more open areas of juniper forest and would be very hot in midday. There were many Elk prints along the trail, but we didn't see the real thing, again- there were hunters out. This trail also gets a 2 rating from me. Not much to see, and the condition it was in was pretty rough. I won't come back here, there are many more places I'd rather visit that take less effort to get to and have more to offer. Some other hikers mentioned that the Kelsy/Dorsey loop is the way to go- it's a bit shorter but nicer. Take that as you will.

We had a nice trip from the norther HB TH and went over to Barbershop Spring to camp. The light drizzle was enough to make a campfire tough to start, but the steaks got cooked in it eventually. We dayhiked out to the rim via HB and came back down Barbershop Canyon, which is well worth the time to see. Lots of flowers and butterflies made this a memorable trip. I'll be back again!

Beautiful day hike with my beautiful wife. I thought I'd create an account an log this trip since there were questions about water recently. There is water off and on throughout the canyon all the way down to the ruins. Water is trickling through in some locations. It wasn't too warm despite being May, but there was a light breeze helping on our way out. There were several types of wildflowers blooming: penstemon, primrose, wallflower, manzanita, fleabane etc.

The road in is in good shape, I used 4WD only in the last few hundred yards to make it a smoother ride, but it isn't necessary. There was a Dodge Charger in the parking lot, so I guess even high clearance isn't needed if it's a rental......

2 Nighter from the west end to Horse Camp. Took 3 guys with us who'd never been backpacking. They were strong and able. We sojourned in about 3 hours, stopping at Hell's Half Acre for a quick rest. We set up in hammocks and one tent for the 5 of us and enjoyed a lazy afternoon on Friday. We spotted one female bighorn on the opposite wall of the canyon. She was in a big hurry, and it appeared she was looking for something as she kept jumping up on rocks and looking around. Not typical bighorn behavior.
On day 2, 4 of us explored Horse Camp Canyon. It was awesome. We scrambled up past the first algae covered pools and found a beautiful L shaped pool that was black as night, but the water was flowing slowly through it, so there was no algae. I dropped a rock in it and watched as it went down, down, down and disappeared. That settled it for me. Off came the pack and most of my clothes. I hopped in and dove as deep as possible, with my feet reaching probably 18' and never reached the bottom. Anyone have experience with this pool? The water was crystal clear to at least 6' from the surface, but my buddies said I disappeared for a few seconds. The pool was only about 8' wide, but the sides must go straight down or even out. It was great! We continued on up the canyon for a good 2 hours, exploring and finding several scummy ponds and another, much wider but shallower pond that was not scummy. Some minor exposure in the climbing, but nothing too serious. We eventually stopped when the flora turned to a few hardwoods and where the canyon wall shaded us nicely for lunch. Since the pools were mostly gone we decided to turn around, but there's not telling how far we could have gone....
That night we had several encounters with scorpions, but no one got stung.
The trip out was fast, under 2 hours. Several groups coming in on sunday.
Stopping in Superior at Los Dos Hermanos for a pound of machaca beef in a tortilla is always a great way to finish the trip.
