We did the Rae Lakes Loop from the Onion Valley Trail head last week. I will add some pics shortly.

Day 1: Left the trail head at Onion Valley and headed over Kearsarge Pass then down to Junction Meadow it was about 10 miles. Heavy packs to start with made the climb up to the pass a challenge. The down hill beat up my knees. The views had me in awe from the start. Great camp site up the trail to East Lake. Just across Bubbs Creek. Caught all Brown trout in Bubbs Creek.

Day 2: Junction Meadow to Lower Paradise Valley about 12 miles. This was an enjoyable morning cruising through great trail and shade. Views for days and good times... then you reach the junction where Roads end comes in and you are greeted with lots of people. We stopped for lunch in this area and continued on. The climb up to Paradise valley was slow for me. Stock up on water before heading into this area. It was in the sun and hot all afternoon with limited access to filter water. I ran too low and got over heated. We were lucky enough to get our eyes on a mamma bear and her cub, followed by a large healthy male. Fishing was great with all rainbows and some dispute over some golden caught.

Day 3: Lower Paradise Valley to Woods Creek Trail JMT junction. About 10 miles. A flat start to a steady climb up to the suspension bridge. Upper Paradise Valley would have been worth it to push up to in hind site. Its a pretty flat couple miles but I was done the day before. Good campsites in this area and enjoyed chatting with a few thru hikers and various other wanderers. Fishing is good all through here.

Day 4: Woods Creek Trail to Rae Lakes. Uhh about 7 ish? Its a good climb up to dollar lake then pretty chill climb up to the rae lakes area. I loved this area. Fishing was good with all brook trout. The views around the lake and of fin dome are amazing..

Day 5: Rae Lakes to Kearsarge Lakes. Maybe like 6 miles. Setting ourselves up to get over Glenn Pass but not having to do two passes in a day, we stayed at Kearsarge Lakes on our last night. Glenn Pass wasn't as bad as I had thought it would be. We all made quick work of the day and settled into the zoo that is Kearsarge Lakes. This place gets busy on the weekends. Regardless its a good place to be. Fished away the afternoon and relaxed.

Day 5: Kearsarge Lakes to Onion Valley trailhead. Out of camp about 6:30 and to the top of the pass a bit before 8.. then down to the truck where a cooler of beer awaited. Had one and the drive back home began.

What I learned is for me 10 miles a day in the Sierra Nevada is a respectable days walk... there isn't a dang flat spot in that area, toenails are overrated.

I was told this loop is a good intro into the sierra nevadas and I would agree. This was an enjoyable trip, great group of fellas and great fishing. Plan on catching small fish the whole time but you will be rewarded with beautiful colored up wild trout that fight like nothing.

A very enjoyable weekend in the Grand Canyon. Down to Hermit Rapids on Friday late late morning and returned out on Sunday early. This was my first time off of the corridor trails and enjoyed it much more.

Took the fly rod down even though we noticed the river was off color. Wet a line for a bit just cause.

Relaxed around camp and read, had good laughs.

One car in the lot when I showed up. It had been there all night as far as I could tell. Started by headlamp and it was chilly. Knocked out this loop pretty quick and didn't see anyone till I almost hit 2nd water trail.

Met up with some coworkers that are from the west side of town. Most of them hadn't done much in the Supes and they wanted to do this. I joined them and had a great time. It has been years since I have done Peralta to Freemont Saddle.

This is our yearly Canyon trip.

We wandered down SKB Friday morning after a cold sleepless night in Mather Campground. Te lack of sleep made for some slow going.

We arrived in Phantom Ranch and got set up for the evening. After the chores were done and a bite to eat its was time to see if there were still any fish in the Bright Angel Creek.

The fishing is fantastic. Brought a couple to hand that afternoon and called it a day with the fishing.

Ran into Te-Wa down there and shared a couple pints and some laughes. Good seeing you always dude.

Woke up early Saturday and had at some more fishing before heading up to Indian Gardens in the afternoon. The creek did not dissapoint once again. I can only imagine what the trout population mush have been like prior to the parks doing their best to lower the count. I rekkon they were about stacked on top of each other.

Had a slow wander up to Indian Garden, dropped the packs, then headed out to Plateau Point for sunset. What a fantastic view, I don't know why I haven't done this in the past. Uh WHOA!

Then out on Sunday morning and burgers and beer at Lumberyard in Flagstaff.

Great weekend.

My friend Patrick and I had a go at the Mother Lode this weekend.

We went off to the trailhead Friday after he got off work and slept at the trailhead.

We were up well before sunRISE (edit) and hit the trail with headlamps. We arrived at the saddle as the sun was about to rise.

We continued down the Amethyst trail and up between the furthest two south peaks. We topped out on Amethyst Peak at approx 9 am.

After signing in we were on our way to Sister Peak and topped out there in approx. one hour.

Here is where this whole ordeal gets interesting. It took forever to get to the next peak. After cliffing out a few times and having to back track we finally made our way to the top of Brother Peak. I lost track of how long this took. I feel like we were in the saddle for an hour with all the back tracking and route discussion.

We had a bite to eat on top of Brother Peak and then headed off to Browns. The first bit off the narrow ridge line was pretty awesome.

We made Browns in good time and hung out for a bit. Then headed out.

Over all this was a pretty amazing adventure. The weather was fantastic! As the mileage isn't that big of deal, the route finding, exposure, and stress are the main factors on this hike. we both lost a few fights with agave and catclaw. My arms look like I lost a fight with an angry cat.

I could see how someone could very easily get in over their head on this.

I really am glad we decided to do this, it was extremely rewarding.

The mutt and I went off Monday morning. We had a slow roll back to Charlebois. Stopping to check out Le Barge Spring and wandering off on some side trails.

Had a good night there and met an interesting dude. He had done the AZT a few years back and as it turns out, lives a block away from me. Small world. We had some drinks and chatted till it got dark and I hit the hay. We exchanged contact information and plan on meeting up for some day hikes.

We left in the morning and had a wander to find the master map. No luck.

I spent the second night at the junction of Dutchman and Bluff Springs trail. Pretty uneventful really. Sat in camp and read while the pup slept.

My new to me super light weight tent worked well, I am well pleased with that purchase. I would be concerned if it was dumping like Reavis the week before.

Thanks for the hook up squirrel.

Over all it was a good trip.

Walked all that way to get bit in the butt. :D I am over it, can you tell?

Had a fantastic time, it was nice meeting you all, thanks for letting that guy tag along.

Edit....

I was up way to late the night before with a lady friend enjoying some homebrew.. that guy!

Todd was right on time and ready to go with his crew, well rested bodies.. I offended everyone with cig smoke and booze on my breath..that guy!

We got to the trail head... and off they went. Those guys are fast. I need to lay off the booze and smokes.

Got to the ranch 4.5 hours later... yeah I was hurting. The last 4 miles were good it just took me a while to sober up.

Met up with Frank the last couple miles and we took a detour through the orchard and ate a couple apples. His trekking poles worked well for yanking them off the high branches.

After that things are kinda blurry.. there was alot of booze involved.

It was good to see Winston again... its been almost a year.

I really appreciate your whole crew letting me tag along.

I was "that guy"...

I am not expecting another invite.. but damn I had a good time.

Thanks and very nice meeting you all.

It was a touch warm till we got finished up.

Friday... Got a late start because I had a few bits to tend to and wanted to wait on the FedEx dude to drop off a package that I didn't want sitting out all weekend. I finally got going and arrived at the trail head at 12:30. The whole ride in was a zoo. Its finally nice in southern Arizona and everybody was out enjoying the weather. Uh it was a touch warm and the mutt and I drank up almost all of our water.

Came across a few folks coming out as I was wandering in. Ran into two chaps that said there were no apples. I got bummed a bit. Then I ran into a couple that had a pack full of apples.. YES!

I arrived at the ranch a touch after 4PM. 3.5 hours in.. I think the dutch oven and six pack of beer, slowed me down. :D

Filtered water, set up camp, made a bit of food, watched a couple deer in the meadow, had some drinks by the fire and tried to sleep well. The full moon kept me up.

Saturday... I had a sleep in till 7. Slow day around camp, drinking coffee, reading, eating. Got slightly motivated to have a wander about 11 or so. The spent the better part of the day exploring around the whole ranch area and orchard.. picking apples and eating them. Just wandering and checking out all the old farming gear.

I packed up a bunch of apples to take over to my mom. She wants to make a pie. Had a chat with a some cowboys shooting guns and some other folks. Watched more deer wander close to camp again and crashed out.

Sunday... Up bright and early. A group showed up just after sunset the night before and were loud. Obnoxious! Stealing sitting logs from the camp next door for the fire. More on that later.

I was up at 6 and packed up and out rolling by 7. Had a fantastic hike out. Made good time and had a chat with two guys at the saddle in for a day hike. Their pup Daisy could have been my pups sister. Same white with brindle spots. They played, we chatted.

I stopped in to pay my respects at the grave site.

Saw an animal on the way out.. I say animal cause I can not figure out what it was. I thought it was a mountain lion at first and didn't know if I should grab my handgun or the camera. I went for the camera and shot a bad pic on a crap camera. I still have no idea what it was.

Had a chat with a hunter at the trail head. He said they took 3 buck in their group that weekend. He and I ate some apples on the tailgate of my truck and yammered on for a bit.

Overall... Reavis Ranch is a pretty magical, amazing place.

There is something about the orchard, the old farm equipment, the fact that it sits in the middle of the AZ desert. I tried to go there 10 years ago from the north and didn't make it due to a really sick dog. I am bummed it took me this long to have a go at it again.

What really bums me out.. I ran into some idiots. I am convinced that humans pretty much suck for the most part. The amount of litter, toilet paper, and still lit campfires that I ran into. Meh. It is what it is, I am glad I got to check it out before some knuckle head ruins it.

It was am amazing weekend in an awesome place with my pup. Exactly what I needed.

I met up with my friend Brian this morning and set off to do this section of the Arizona Trail. We met at 4:30 AM at the gas station at McDowell and the Beeline..

Got to the southern trail head a bit after 7.. uh 29 degrees.

The morning light and the remaining frost made for great views and a fantastic hike.

We got a little cocky as we were ahead of schedule for our set shuttle pick up time and decided to try and find the Battle of Big Dry Wash Monument up near the reservoir.(thats where the extra miles came from) We decided just to wander up East Clear Creek. You cant find it that way I guess. So after wasting 2 hours doing that.

Back on the AZT and the slog up from East Clear across and down into the campground.

Over all a great trail. A bit over marked IMO but cool. Whoever hauled that much rock to line the trail is a maniac. That is just crazy.

First section of the AZT for me and looking forward to more.

Thanks pops for giving up your day to shuttle us back to the car.

I am whooped! Going to have some barley pops then sleep well.

I was going to go out to Reavis this weekend but my pops needed some help around his house so I couldn't make it.

I did get out and have a wander this morning. I had seen some tailings the last time I had done this loop and wanted to go check out the mine.

I love the supes.

I got out to the Supes this morning. Went off to first water and up to 2nd water spring.

I had a bit of a bush wack to check out the second water spring and then went up to see if I could find Obie Stokers old camp and mines. With the recent rains the pools were full and water was flowing a bit. I came across the camp with the old bed frame and some other rusty cans and what not. Then Headed further up canyon and think I found one of the mines. Headed down the 2nd water canyon back to the trail.

Headed up Boulder canyon trail and crossed it eleventy billionty times. (ok maybe like 10) Then back to dutchman where I had lunch and a barley pop. I had to hydrate and Sierra Nevada makes a good go to pale. There is a ton of pools all through Boulder Canyon.

OK here is where it gets interesting. Coming back Dutchman I caught up with three backpackers. I followed them and their three "dogs" for about .5 miles or so. It turns out one of them was a goat. Cool! Nice to meet you Winston (the goat) and it was good chatting with your owners. They were coming out from a weekend at Charliebois.

Never know what you are going to see out there.

Over all it was a good day for sure. I added superfeet to my boots and that really helped. My feet feel great where as before after doing this distance I would have been in substantial pain.

I am putting dripping here because it seemed to just kinda seep out of the bedrock. There was a trickle in the canyon but with the recent rain that could make it seem like more. Lots of water through this whole hike.

My mom wondered what I do on these wanders out in the desert and wanted to go. She does a lot of bike rides and walks in the neighborhood and is in good shape.

I decided this would be a good one and I hadn't done it so. We had a fantastic morning. The weather was perfect with a bit of over cast skies and a nice breeze. Its been a while since we have hung out together, just the two of us. There are usually family mayhem and kids everywhere. We had good talks and good silence.

Saw what we used to call tadpoles in the spring. Also saw a small fish.. There was a group of three others there that saw it as well. No idea what it was. I asked him if his name was Nemo but he wasn't talking.

One of the better hikes I have been on, just because of the company. I am biased I know.

We stopped at the Superstition Mountain Museum on the way back. I picked up the Superstition Wilderness Trails West book. I have no idea what took me so long to get this book. There is going to be some major geeking out for me with this book.

I know she won't see this but, Thanks Mom! I had a fantastic day!

For some reason I think this is going to be a touch wordy.. you will see why at the end.

I will start by saying its my birthday and I decided to get away, alone and enjoy a wander in the desert.

I have looked at some maps online and saw a few spots in this loop that looked interesting. I was on a mission to check out the Aylor's Caballo Camp area as well as some arch that's named after him. Look at the head on that dude. Not only did he name a camp in his name, he named an arch that, I am pretty sure, he had nothing to do with creating. I could be wrong. Dunno. Oh, and there is a mine I wanted to see if I could find.

Dang I haven't even gotten to the hike yet.

Ok, so I got to the trailhead about 7:30. I headed out Dutchman and didn't see a soul. Pretty low key for the most part just wandering about. About two miles in, I heard a bark and some movement in the brush ahead. Not sure what it was, was figuring it was coyotes, but I am not sure now. Other than that, nothing too exciting, great views I guess.(my opinion later)

So Aylors Camp, I had grand visions of exploring a place that no one has been since he closed up shop, Maybe find some old stone walls or something. Nope, and I really knew that was the case but fun to have a spot to search for. I just wandered about, maybe I missed something. Dunno. I know I could have googled it or searched here, got the answer, and sat on the couch.

Wandered up Dutchman a bit more and checked out the arch. This might sound odd but I thought that if I was going to ambush someone, I should do it in the beginning of East Boulder Canyon. You could do it with awesome views of the needle.

There is a camp site right at the Bull Pass trail head cut off that has the only shade tree on the trail... ok there were others but.. I had a sit down, a sammich, hydrated with a pint of some homebrewed IPA, and look at the map for fun.

Pretty straight forward from there, back Dutchman, to Black Mesa, Its a bit of a slog up that hill, then levels out and cruising from there.

There is a mine along this section of trail and I was on a mission to find it. There was a period of time I was thinking the online map guy just put dots on the map for idiots like me. I would mess with folks a bit too. Had a bit of a tromp and was able to locate it and was stoked. It was really alot more than I expected, sweet.

Finished up and dropped down to Garden Valley and man that rain did it good, so green.

Just on Second Water and ran into the first people I had seen all day, two backpackers out for the weekend, I was jealous, I wanted to spend a couple days out there.

Stopped back at my folks, then they took me for berfday dinner at the Handlebar, fantastic food, a Hop Henge IPA, Hop Knot IPA, and a proper sour, I sit here with a warm head, proper buzz, and smile on my face.

It was a good day.

end all, I think I did this loop wrong, when I do it again, I would go up Second Water to Black Mesa.. Yeah, in that direction, I found myself stopping and turning around for pics and views. I also would have added maybe a loop around Black Top Mesa via Needle Canyon and back Bull Pass.

Headed to the Grand Canyon with some friends over the weekend.

Slept a cold night on the South Rim in Mather. Brr I am guessing it got down to about 10F with some pretty good wind.

It was a slow start to get packed up and moving Friday morning. Jumped the shuttle over to South Kaibab trail and down to Phantom Ranch. Had a good time fishing, relaxing in the warm sun and laughing over a few beers in the Canteen.

Saturday was another relaxing day of fishing in the morning then up to Indian Gardens late in the afternoon.

Sunday was up early and finish up Bright Angel.

We finished off with burgers and a pint in the Bright Angel Lodge.

Good times.

Got out this morning for a good hike with the pup. I needed to work off all the fantastic beer I drank during Arizona Beer Week. :)

This is the first time doing this loop so I didn't know what to expect. My thoughts were to see if I could wander around the Williams Camp area just past where the Terrapin trail cuts off of Bluff Springs.

We hit the trail head about 8am and started the hump up Bluff Springs trail. It was already warmer than I would have preferred. We had a lazy stroll snapping pictures and stopping at the couple water holes we came across to let my hiking partner get drinks and lay in the pools. We seemed to slow down and enjoy the cool canyons that were shaded. I was a bit disappointed in not finding Williams Camp, I am fairly certain I knew the area as I saw what looked like tailings higher up the hill side. I guess I could have gone off trail to have a look but didn't. meh call me lazy.

Stopped and had a good chat with two fellas at the Dutchman trail junction. They were on a mission to find Hidden Valley, if I remember correctly. We looked at Topos together and I really wanted to accept their invitation to join them on their adventure.

After leaving them I cut a left and wandered up to check out Bluff Springs. By a couple camp spots, some fleece pants hanging in a bush, a duck under and through some brush and it was flowing. Davey had a good drink and I poked around. I spooked something that must have been down for a drink. Never saw what it was but heard it.

Back to Dutchman and then the gradual climb to the saddle where Whiskey Springs trail cuts off and a stop for a bite and views of Miners Needle. Started down and ran into a Search and Rescue guy, short chat and we continue on.

Down the switch backs enjoying the wild flowers and then the bit across back the trail head.

This was a fantastic hike. I enjoyed chatting with the folks I ran into, there are some incredible views and a bit to explore.

After the fact, this may not have been the best choice on my part on this day with the pup. It was a bit too long with the temps for him. We stopped frequently to try and keep him cool and hydrated.

Wow, talk about long winded.

It was time to give a go at Ridgeline.. My friend Patrick and I were talking about it for a while now and he got away from the little ones on Saturday. Turns out he had others interested as well. He had two friends at work that wanted to play too.

So off we went. Jason, Patrick, Brian, Lido(sp?)and I met up at the Carney Springs trail head a bit after 7. My pops lives in far east Mesa and agreed to pick us up in at the Dutchman gate and take us back to Gold Canyon. I think he was concerned with our decision. After the fact I ended up with voice mails wondering how we were doing.

The parking lot was full and we were told we were shortly behind a large group of 30. We met up with the nice group of people at the first saddle and played leap frog with them all day. Strong hikers the whole group of them.

So on to the hike. After a haul up, up ,up i figured it was a cruise across the top then down, down, down into Siphon Draw. That is not the case. There is not a flat spot on this trail. I think the only flat spot there was we missed by going left and down off the ridge about half way through.

This trail really has to have some of the best views of the Superstition Wilderness. You get an idea as to how vast the area truly is.

For some reason I feel if you didn't have to deal with the bottle neck at Siphon draw and what goes along with that, it would be perfect.

Over all one of the better hikes in the area there is IMO. I am sat here with sore legs and proud of the accomplishment. Not easy and some of the spots are work. Worth every penny and cant wait to do it again.

My pup is not pleased with me though. He knows that I went on an adventure with out him.
