Camped out at Lockett Meadow Friday evening. Started hiking about 6:30am Saturday morning, made it to about 12k feet on Weatherford before the clouds on top of Humphreys looked WAY too nasty to continue :out: . Nice mellow hike on the back down... until with about .5 miles left the weather absolutely exploded on us. Pea to marble sized hail, pouring rain, thunder and lightning. So glad I had my rain jacket with me. Trail turned into a creek. Ran all the way back to Jeep to ride out the storm with my cooler full of beer :D

I'll be back.

Felt really good considering I haven't hiked in over a month. Had to take advantage of the cooler weather.

Wonderful weather for an overnight on the rim. Fred Haught :next: Houston Brothers :next: Rim Rd. Camped near Pinchot springs and enjoyed the crystal clear ice cold spring water. The northern 3 or so miles of the Houston Brothers trail is amazing. Next time I'll have to try the eastern portion of this loop and do the U-Bar and Barbershop trails.

I have been putting together some new backpacking gear and was ready to test it out. GF and I had intended on camping in the Charlebois area, but stopped at LaBarge spring off of Red Tanks and decided the area was too nice to leave. Lots of shady trees, cool breezes and the spring was running strong. Nice wildflowers on the way too. Looking forward to doing this one again.

1st trip
Grand Canyon SK-CC-BA

I have done the SK-BA day loop a couple times in the past, so this time I wanted to take it a bit easier and enjoy what the bottom of the canyon has to offer.

Day 1 - 8:00am started down the South Kaibab trail. Freezing cold and windy, with patches of dirty ice at the very top - almost ate it in the first 2 minutes of the hike. Warmed up just a ways down from Cedar Ridge. Took a very leisurely pace and got to Phantom at about noon. Lady working at the canteen told me that the pay-phone was broken, but that there was cell signal up the Clear Creek trail a ways. Sure enough there was up by the bench. No bars but it still worked, way to go Verizon. Called to say hi to GF. Spent some time hiking around the bridge area, beach and parts of the river trail. Enjoyed the ranger programs and cold beer at Phantom. Stayed night 1 at the dorms.

Day 2 - 6:00am headed up the Clear Creek trail. Saw 2 backpackers coming out on the first climb up, otherwise had the trail to myself the entire day. The views from up here are absolutely stunning. Probably could have spent the entire day just exploring around the first few miles. Made it to Clear Creek about 11:00 or so, and tooled around at the bottom for about an hour. Last part of the trail is pretty dicey with loose rock/dirt. A mis-step would result in a long steep slide to the bottom. Was surprised that I didn't see anyone camping down there. Headed out and made it back to Phantom at 3:30 for a couple ice cold lemonades in the afternoon, and beers in the evening. Stayed night 2 at the dorms.

Day 3 - 6:00am left Phantom Ranch and headed up Bright Angel. Made it out at 10:35 with about 30 minutes of break time.
