I have done the SK-BA day loop a couple times in the past, so this time I wanted to take it a bit easier and enjoy what the bottom of the canyon has to offer.
Day 1 - 8:00am started down the South Kaibab trail. Freezing cold and windy, with patches of dirty ice at the very top - almost ate it in the first 2 minutes of the hike. Warmed up just a ways down from Cedar Ridge. Took a very leisurely pace and got to Phantom at about noon. Lady working at the canteen told me that the pay-phone was broken, but that there was cell signal up the Clear Creek trail a ways. Sure enough there was up by the bench. No bars but it still worked, way to go Verizon. Called to say hi to GF. Spent some time hiking around the bridge area, beach and parts of the river trail. Enjoyed the ranger programs and cold beer at Phantom. Stayed night 1 at the dorms.
Day 2 - 6:00am headed up the Clear Creek trail. Saw 2 backpackers coming out on the first climb up, otherwise had the trail to myself the entire day. The views from up here are absolutely stunning. Probably could have spent the entire day just exploring around the first few miles. Made it to Clear Creek about 11:00 or so, and tooled around at the bottom for about an hour. Last part of the trail is pretty dicey with loose rock/dirt. A mis-step would result in a long steep slide to the bottom. Was surprised that I didn't see anyone camping down there. Headed out and made it back to Phantom at 3:30 for a couple ice cold lemonades in the afternoon, and beers in the evening. Stayed night 2 at the dorms.
Day 3 - 6:00am left Phantom Ranch and headed up Bright Angel. Made it out at 10:35 with about 30 minutes of break time. |
