I saw this reffered to as Vertigo Spire in a 2016 triplog so I'm going with that! This is the spire on the west side of Chuparosa Canyon. I've been back here many times but never tried to approach it from this direction. I took the route up thru the canyon and crossed over the double (dry) falls and headed up the slick rock as much as I could. There is always something new to see back in here but it's off-trail and challenging! Made it above 3,000 feet but had to turn back cuz it was getting late and it looked more difficult higher up. I think my route from 2014 is probably the better choice although it is more off-trail.

This hike was from Hieroglyphic TH on Lost Goldmine past Turks Head then off-trail to the cliff-break to the west of Turtle Canyon (which I recently read in a triplog is the break immediately west of Mushroom Rock). I had been close before but always wanted to go back for an up-close look and any potential route up. There was no obvious way and it was very choked so I'll have to keep going the long way via Hiero>Balanced Rock>3915! Still a fun day with interesting sights and lots of cholla and catclaw (not so fun!!).

A fun day getting together with Linda again after so long! We had planned to get together but first I needed to get away from the beer hikes and do something serious. After some bigger hikes (for me) the last few weeks I suggested we do this one because it was one of the few she hadn't done. Thankfully she was very patient with my pace and route remembering! That last 1,000 feet up from where I've been jumping off to 3915 is a real butt kicker! Got to the summit about 12:30, had some snacks and talked to a few people that were there, then headed down to Hiero, which is a challenge too! Then hiked down Hiero to the TH.

This route is awesome! AEG, serious scrambling, steep and loose and of course the views! And no Flatiron crowds after the glyphs! Thanks again for your patience Linda! Hope to see you again soon!

This could also be called Balancing Rock to Wave Cave!

I decided I needed to give it another try right away after last week. Made it out to my turn around spot about 45 minutes faster than previously. Went farther to the bottom of the drainage but still didn't get down to where I wanted because it was too steep or too choked. Climbed up the other side and took a break because it was obvious things were gonna get rough.

East of Mushroom Rock the slick rock and game trails end and scrambling and catclaw take over! I don't think I was even going 1 mph!! I found some old climbers' trails but it still seemed like it took forever to turn the corner at the base of Three Sisters and head north to Wave Cave.

Of course it was busy! Took a picture and left! By the time I reached Lost Goldmine I was really wishing I had a shuttle but the long walk back gave me time to take some pictures of the ridgeline and have a shot of bourbon to celebrate!

I doubt I'll do this one again! I'll probably go back down to Ermahgerd and maybe the big funnel by Mushroom Rock but past that it was diminishing returns! I'm glad I was able to get it done once though!!

I've been fascinated with everything just to the east of Hieroglyphic since I first saw Peak 3915 eight years ago. Chuparosa, Ermahgerd, Peak 3915 and what I call the Mushroom Rock Cliffs are all on the list. Lately I've been wondering if it was possible to go from Balancing Rock to the Wave Cave. Today was my first hike past Peak 3915 to explore a possible route. I wanted to get to the big drainage near Mushroom Rock.

Started at 8:00 and made good time up past Balancing Rock and over to the part of the 5057 route that shoots up through the hoodoos (~4000ft). From there it was off-trail past the whole fallen saguaro and across the high ledge. Past 3915 and into the unknown down toward Ermahgerd (which was tougher than expected). Down by the cliffs I was quickly stuck in a maze of rocks. Made some adjustments and got close to the spots I wanted to see then headed for the drainage.

This is a cool spot! Would love to see water slicing down through here! I really wanted to go down near the bottom but time and energy said no! I could have crossed over and gone a little further towards Wave Cave (now wish I would have), but I had a snack, took some pictures and noticed the arch!

Heading back I got drawn into the eastern edge of Ermahgerd. Got some great shots of the cave! Made the tough climb back up to 3915 and walked around on that weirdness then went back down past Balancing Rock. Got to the car at 6:00 pretty worn out but very happy!! Last night I said I'd never do it again but today I'm not so sure!!! :D

Last hike before my friends leave for Ohio. Since this was more of a celebration hike we only went to the top of the hill from the marina. We found a nice spot out of the high winds and cracked open some beers and enjoyed the views for a couple hours. We watched the dust storm envelop Weavers to the south and Four Peaks to the north!! We saw several groups returning from LaBarge later in the day.

My friends really enjoyed the day and of course want to check out LaBarge next time!

Got back up the Wedding Cake and went from the summit to the north end of the middle layer and followed the edge of that band clockwise to the south side. It got pretty windy by then and some cool clouds started forming over the mountain but it was time to head back.

Hadn't been out past Turks in a while and thought it would be a good test for a sore ankle. Crossed the fence out by Mushroom Rock and poked around then came back and hiked back on the cool mountain bike trail just south of the Wedding Cake.

From behind the Wedding Cake the other day I thought I spotted a fire ring in this area below Peak 3845 so I had to go check it out. No fire ring but found a cool slick rock area amongst the crumbling rock walls. Tried to get back in further but was blocked by a twenty foot wall that ran way up the mountain and everything else below was choked with catclaw so I relaxed until sunset!

A nice afternoon hike out to the last overlook before the trail begins descending down to the canyon bottom. Took a nice break and enjoyed one of the best views in the Supes! Looking forward to hiking to the Box again soon!!

I followed some old cairns on the hills behind the Wedding Cake to see if they went into Ermahgerd. It looked like they did but there's a better way so I headed back and checked out that route!

I hadn't been up Turks in several years and since we got a late start we decided to give it a try. This really is a great hike with some really great views towards the mountain but also some great scenes along the "trail" to the top. We even had a visitor on the way down! The sunset was awesome and we got back to the car just before we needed the flashlights!!

Working my way back up to the Ridgeline! We stopped about 2.5 miles up the canyon from the trailhead and enjoyed the surroundings, a couple cold ones and another beautiful day!

This is also known as the Wedding Cake. After looking down at it so many times from up in Chuparosa Canyon, we finally decided to check it out! The trail off Lost Goldmine is easy to follow and provides a nice workout to get to the middle layer. It's about another 10 minutes to the top from there and the views are worth it!

Had a fun day meeting up with Pam for the first time in a long time! I wanted to show her the way into Chuparosa Canyon and hopefully see some water flowing and hummingbirds buzzing around. There wasn't enough rain to get things flowing but the pools were filled back up after being empty a few days earlier. We still had a great time poking around above the falls, talking and taking pictures. The hummingbirds were taking their mid-day siesta because we only saw a few, but that should change soon since everything is getting ready to bloom!

This hike is rough!! And gets rougher as you go! There's a faint route and it can disappear fast! It's totally worth it!! There used to be a canyoneering video of this online, but check out some of the other HAz photosets for that!

Tuesday was a good day to try the Flatiron for the first time since the Mining Camp burned down! It hasn't gotten any easier!! :D

It was a beautiful, cool, crisp day for starting at Lost Dutchman State Park. Didn't see many people on the trail before I got to the Basin, but a dozen or so passed me on the way to the top! I actually had the Flatiron to myself when I got there though! Walked the perimeter, took a break above Monument Canyon and then headed back. A few were still heading up even after 2:00. The hike down was tough too but I made it by going slow!

I was sore yesterday but feel pretty good today! Will have to give this another shot soon and then try to hit the Ridgeline again!

Since it was free State Park day I took some friends who had never done Siphon Draw before. Of course the parking lot was packed, but the trail wasn't too bad! We climbed up just past the basin, went over to the area above the falls and enjoyed a few cold ones, took some pix and just enjoyed the day together!
