Me and the Shar Pei decided to try to reach the AZ trail using Rock Creek. Tough hike and got lost near Hopi Spring so ran out of time. Still melting snow up there. Need more sawing but someone did a bunch so the last two switchbacks are the only realy overgrown section. But that is relative, since you rub bushes periodically but the last two switchbacks in Hopi spring area are brutal.

Made the spin up the mountain to hike Rock Creek. about 4 creek crossings later we started out to see the falls. Its a very well defined trail that starts out following the creek and the upper portions cross some rock faces in a fun and dramatic fashion. Its a real climber! Beautiful day, enjoyed the falls quick and hiked back down.

What a great day exploring the springs. I found a cave like spring, unmarked on maps and the pooch enjoyed the water. What a great area!!! For some reason they have cut multiple roads into the draw and deposited haphazard piles of stones. I assume they are for erosion control. Its changed the character a bit since my last visit 2013

Went up past boulder flat past the corral, to my horror the once (just last month) well trimmed path was COMPLETELY block with catclaw! The snow curled all the catclaw in Ballantine canyon into the trail, I cut and hammered my way 2 more miles but again fell short of Rock Tank. This is large deadfall and the snow really stripped the tops of trees, snapping basically everything. It is passable though, but I got tired from sawing and ran out of daylight. I was heavily clawed with catclaw. Took my moms do George, he really enjoyed himself. Next time I will make it to Rock Tank!

This was truely an different day in the Superstition! There was over 2 feet of snow near Castle Dome, and the trail was no where to be found, just snow & then more snow. There was no shortage of views and anything that could have water, does have water. Such a great day, it will be melting all week. :y:

Left about 10AM and the trail is in great condition. went past boulder flat and up to the corral and on to Ballantine Canyon. It looks like there is actually a trail up there now! We would have gone on to Rock Tank but the creek was flowing too heavy to keep from getting wet. Be back after all these storms, the cascading water along the way was great music.

Got a great group together and headed out for three days at the lovely Reavis Ranch! 7 AM Friday morning we hit the Reavis Trailhead by Apache Lake. After a brief goodbye our ride left us to the trail. Our mission is 3 days crossing the Superstition Wilderness. We would rendezvous with our friends at the ranch who would give us a ride out at Roger's Trough. The hike in was great, we had a fair amount of early shade owing to the trail being just under the ridgeline. As the sun rose so did the temps and it was rather warm. Luck the weather was unseasonably cool! We made it to the ranch in about 6 hours and setup camp by Reavis creek. The next day a few of us did the hike up to Circlestone. What an amazing view! The hike out was WARM! several of us were stung by bees near Reavis Spring/Saddle but we made it out and it felt great to hike the entire Reavis Trail 109. Apples are a good crop, but wont be around in about two more weeks.

Got up early and drove to the trailhead on a FRIGID day. Much snow still covering the high desert days after, it was really surprising. Set out on the trail and enjoyed the fantastic red rock cliffs under snow. The snow was pretty deep, and got deeper as you went. This unfortunately hid some hazards, and add some additional challenge. It was fun to have first bootprints up to the Big Kahuna falls, and to see it frozen. Whist standing below the grotto, I fell thru the ice into the small pool of water up to about mid-shin. BRRR! A nice sunny day and the hike down dryed me out. Saw a coatimundi on the way out, pretty neat. :)

What a nice hike to get some solitude this time of year. Nice and Icy up on the rim, but minimal snowcover. Saw several elk, and tracks galore, but no other humans. The crazy sound of rock hitting the frozen lake was a highlight of my day :y:

We did this loop in the opposite direction, going up Bluff Springs trail at 7:00 AM and we found much dust in the air from the recent little shower. It blew out by the end of the day, but in hindsight all that hard breathing (cough cough!) :o anyway it was a wonderful day and a great hike. My buddie played some flute at each spring where water flowed.

The flowers are in bloom yet there is a shortage. Alas it has been dry and so the rain in february didn't come to bring the great number of flowers one usually sees in the Superstition. Still a fantastic trip I wound recommend.

Decided to explore off-trail into the "Mescal Pit" area to see the spring. It's quite a nice place down there! There is a flat area with a pit used to cook mescal hearts, and its appears very fertile down there as much was overgrown. There several caves and Sycamore trees at the spring itself, as well as a large pool below the spring (in Tortilla Creek). Very cool looking canyon walls in the area as well. There is a sweet Arch in the top of the canyon wall above the spring. It only becomes visible as you get rather close to the spring itself. "Mescal Arch" i decided to call it :)

Water was seeping from the rockside, and the creek was flowing well. Filtered water from a little waterfall & enjoyed the fresh looking pools nearby. It's been pretty dry weather, so I was surprised how much flow there was down there. Based on the Sycamores I would think it has water available most of the year

Made the drive up to the Kellner Canyon TH on the Pinals around 11:30. It was unseasonably warm, however there was still some long patches of very icy road just after Kellner Canyon TH, but for the most part very little snow up there. I hiked about 3.6 miles down and turned around, but was able to see the neat sights. Nice views, The biggest manzanita I have ever seen, the water filled cave/mine. Also there where these enigmatic red blocks with little divets, they where very light weight so I assumed salt licks? anyway there was lots of "cowsign" on the trail, so perhaps it was. The most interesting part was the debris around Kellner Canyon Springs area. The Cemented Square box appeared to have a wellbore under a meta; plate sealing it shut. The logging operation at the site left much debris. When I got home I did some research & I pieced together (I think) that there was a Frick & Co. Eclipse model portable steam engine from the late 1800's used onsite for sawing/waterpumping and such. I found an old Advert: http://digital.lib.ecu.edu/13844 Here is a video of Sawing with one: http://www.youtube.com/embed/0_AX3S1vIHsThe unit was a catalogue item made in Waynesboro PA. There was the characteristic curved spoke flywheel, the firetube boiler, and some parts that fit the bill. I think it was slightly different vintage than the one drawn in the link but very close. A very nice hike, I only saw one other person, who puzzled with me briefly on the nature of the debris at Kellner Canyon Spr. :)

Went looking for Willow Spring without any direction, so ended up walking down O Grady creek until it met West Boulder, then turned and walked up West Boulder. It was slow going on the giant rocks, but its a a pretty canyon. When I got to the spring I wasn't sure what actually was spring, as many rocks around the large pool were trickling water. Turns out the pool with the reeds IS the spring, cool! :y: Plenty of water in many spots on the way in as well as lots flowing over the rocks from the pool formed at the spring. on the way back crossed Tim's saddle (completely off trail, couldn't find one) because I figured it had a name due to being a route of travel. I did find the trail on the Saddle and took it down to O Grady Creek, but I followed the creek thru the canyon because (once again) lost the trail. What a cool canyon! Little pools and waterfalls. Next trip I think I would try to climb the saddle near Wilow Spring and catch the view of the Needle from there. What a fun, if meandering and trailess, hike!!

Myself & a friend backpacked into the Superstitions for an awesome weekend! The hill from the trailhead & Bark's canyon were quite strenuous with baggage  We stopped short of Charlebois & instead spent the night in the area of La Barge Spring. What an awesome sight to see the leafy trees in Autumn regalia. The spring was flowing a couple gallons per minuet, and made for a great soundtrack. At the little camp, it was very windy, but only after dark until sunrise :) We left after breakfast the next morning, out the same way we came in. Now I really want to do a Cross Superstition backpack, Peralta to First water, and take this route, spending a day at Charlebois. Beautiful time of year!
