Apache Vista Trail via Sidewinder Trail. Lots of mountain bikers use this trail so of you're listening to music keep one ear bud out so you know they're coming up behind you.

Still a little toasty out at the end of October but still a good view of Lake Pleasant. The trail starts at the Wild Burro Day Use Area off Desert Tortoise Road in Lake Pleasant Regional Park. The hike is all along the edge of the lake or all along the edge of the empty lake bed depending on the lake's water levels at the time. You are likely to see actual wild burros on your hike so keep your camera handy. The trail is not very difficult at all and only about 2 miles one way but if you continue on to the Pipeline Canyon Trail for about another 1.4 miles, there's a cross over to the more challenging Yavapai Point that takes you to the top of a very scenic overlook with a fantastic view of the lake. Wild Burro is good for new hikers, those in need of a short jaunt or as a jump off point for the other trails that lead off from it.

For avid hikers this little jaunt to the point is no problem. If you are sightseeing with friends or family who do not get outdoors much, the trek out to the point may be a bit of a challenge. My kids (10 years old) did just fine but hubby and some other members of our group had to take several rest breaks. The view is worth it, of course, so it's well worth the effort for them. :)

The last period of time to hike this one is probably Memorial weekend. After that it's way too hot! The trail can get very thin at some points so learn from my mistake. Don't let the straps of your back pack loose because the cactus are so close on either side that the straps will catch the cactus spines and deliver them unceremoniously to the side of your body. :( Otherwise it's a very enjoyable hike. Kind of a cross between the trees and streams of northern AZ and the rough, tough, rocky areas around the valley.

Went on this one with a bunch of Boy Scouts. Challenging enough to be fun and plenty of chances to get wet. A May hike was moderately crowded by the locals but not so much that your trip feels like you're in a mall. ;)

A nice, easy, and short hike. One to do with kids or non-hiking friends if you want to make sure not to hike them to death.

A great long hike if your looking for distance without too much elevation change. Watch out for sand! A huge section of the hike is a completely sand road that is crazy difficult to hike through.

Very nice trip with the Trail Mix Hiking Meetup group. This trail is very well maintained by the City of Scottsdale. Very beautiful and unique scenery worth the obscure North Scottsdale route to get there.

You can tell there hasn't been much rain this year. Some flowering plants are blooming but they are few and far between.

This was my first real hiking experience (outside of state park jaunts with my kids.) I took the lollipop loop so it was 6.5 to 7 miles round trip. The hike was easy enough that a moderately fit newbie like myself could tackle but hard enough to be challenging and make me catch the hiking bug. It helps that I live in the neighborhood so the mountain is literally in my back yard! ;)
