It's been a couple weeks since I've posted anything on HAZ. I've been busy with summer activities and it's just been brutally hot around here. The monsoon rains started a week or so ago and the weather has been much better for getting out.
I got a late start today and decided to hike up to Carr Peak. I often overlook my home mountains - the Huachucas. I enjoy going to the Chiricahuas, Pinalenos or up above the rim. However, the Huachucas are a very impressive range. That is especially true when we have some moisture; either rain or snow make the hikes extra special.
Today was one of those days. There was a nice cloud cover most of the day and the wildlife was out enjoying the cool weather. I saw probably 8 whitetail deer and a "pack" of coatimundi.
The Carr Peak trail is a fairly easy 2.75 mile one way hike. The tread is in good condition and the views make the uphill sections more bearable. Very nice parking area with restrooms, garbage containers and nice camp sites. Just a good day.

The monsoons are starting to make a difference and the bloom is coming on. I think it will be 2 weeks before we have a really nice bloom.

I left the house at about 4:30 pm on Weds, June 4 headed to the Chiricahua Mountains - another one of my favorite places. I arrived outside of Rustler Park after 7 pm. Rustler Park is closed so I found a flat spot near there and pitched my REI Camp Dome 2. It's a nice tent - not really a backpack tent, but works well for car camping.
It was a clear night and the stars were impressive. The only bad thing was the wind blew pretty hard all night. I was in an area with quite a few burned trees and every time I got to sleep, something would hit the tent and wake me up. I had Desert Solitaire loaded on my Kindle and would read a chapter or so each time I woke up - turned out to be a pretty good night.
Was up fairly early and loaded tent and stuff into the jeep. Headed out on the Crest Trail - I decided to take Bootlegger Tr since I have not been that way. There were some very nice views to the North, West and East. Fairly open hillsides on the first mile or so of Bootlegger Tr. I came to an intersection with Rock Spring Tr #259 and it said the Crest Tr was 3/4 mile. I had to get back to town early so I decided to head towards the Crest Tr. It was a brutal 3/4 mile - felt like 5. If there was a trail I never really found it. Very steep and loose rocks. Made it to the saddle and Crest Tr. I decided to have a snack and cook some coffee. It was a beautiful spot. I was relaxing having some hot coffee thinking what a lucky person I am to be able to do this. So far this morning I had seen a couple deer and a Great Horned Owl. I heard something behind me and turned around to a very large bear standing about 30 yards away. When I stood up, I think I confused the bear. I said, "bear, you need to go on about your business." He looked at me and chomped / snorted a couple times and walked off. In the excitement I got my phone out and started taking pictures...unfortunately I had moved it to video, so I took about 10 one or 2 second videos. Once I figured it out I took a very poor video of the bear walking off - I loaded it on youtube. You can see it here http://youtu.be/5PgYBG8qMdQ
I know it's a terrible video, but a very nice Chiricahua Black Bear. I finished breakfast and hiked back to the jeep and headed home for some family stuff. It was a very nice, short trip overall. Even if you are not going to hike, it's worth the drive to head up there to Rustler or Barfoot Lookout area. Rough, rugged, beautiful country.

I'm a high school teacher and we take students camping a couple times a year. A group of my graduating seniors wanted to go camping / hiking as a "senior trip." We decided to go to Riggs Flat Lake on Mt. Graham. My granddaughter and I went up on Tuesday, May 27 and made camp. Riggs Lake and the Pinelano Mountains are one of my favorite places - I have a lot of them. It was warmer than usual but still very nice.
On Wednesday, 28 May, I took my granddaughter hiking on Clark Peak Trail. She enjoys the outdoors. We got about .5 mile on the trail and I was kind of zoning out - she said, "Grandpa, there is a bear." I thought she saw a burnt log or something black. Sure enough we were headed north on the trail and about 200 yards in front of us was a massive bear headed south on the trail. She wanted to leave, but I told her to stand still and watch the bear. He heard the noise and was looking in our direction. Instead of getting my camera, I got my binoculars and we watched it for a couple minutes. The bear turned around and walked off, stopped and came back and took another look - I yelled "hey bear" and he looked at us and turned around and slowly walked off - he was upset he would have to bushwack instead of using the trail. We went back to the truck. I'm not sure if it was a good thing or a bad thing - she thought it was cool, but was happy to get back to the truck. I enjoyed seeing the bear - this is the 3rd I've seen in the wild and by far the largest.
My high school students arrived Wednesday afternoon and set up camp. We headed out to Clark Peak Trail at about 0730 on Thursday. Many of them have never been hiking. We went about 5.5 miles in which made for an 11 mile hike - plenty for the students. Clark Peak Tr is different from most of our trails - the first 3 or so miles are downhill - which means a tough hike back to the trailhead. The trail is in pretty good shape - there are some rough spots and some very overgrown areas, but a very enjoyable hike. We saw lots of bear tracks, but no bears. The students were fascinated with cairns and wanted to build one - they built a pretty nice one, but not sure how long it will last. It was a good trip and I hope I inspired some future Hike AZ members. Some already want to do a backpacking trip to the Chiricahua Mts.

I was surprised how dry it was. I assumed there would have been some snow melt moisture, but that was not the case.

My wife and I were looking to take a short trip on Memorial Day. We didn't make our mind up until 23 May, we left on 24 May. We headed to Roosevelt Lake in our 5th wheel - my wife calls it camping...2 TVs, microwave, and a very nice bed...it's not camping. I got up at about 0415 on 25 May and headed to the Fraizer TH, didn't know anything about it. This is actually the Cottonwood Trail #120 trailhead. Very nice parking area, good trail, and I was the only one on the trail. I went about 5 miles one way and returned - very nice morning.
On 26 May I was up early again and headed to the Vineyard trail. Again, good parking, pretty good trail, and I was the only one on the trail. I went about 5 miles in and turned around. Roosevelt Lake was a zoo this weekend. We stayed at the Spring Creek RV Park and it was very quiet with nice facilities and friendly staff. I wasn't able to spend as much time as I would have liked on the trails, but had 2 very nice morning outings. Heard my first rattlesnake of the year - did not see it, was in a large bush next to the trail.

I decided to get out into the wilds on Cinco de Mayo, 2014. I have had Gardner Canyon and to the summit of Mt. Wrightson on my to-do list for quite a while - this was the perfect day. I read about how rough the road was getting to the trailhead...it was no competition for the old jeep. However, the jeep is rough driving down the highway. I don't think you would have too much trouble getting there in a 2 wheel drive, higher clearance vehicle.
One thing I have to say is every time I get out on the trail, I'm more and more thankful for all the trail builders and maintainers. They do amazing work that does not go unnoticed. Another thing on my to-do list - get out there and do some trail work.
I expected the Gardner Canyon trail to be fairly quiet and I was right. I had the trail to myself until I got near Mt. Wrightson - I saw 3 people, all had come from the west side, Madera Canyon area.
The trail is in very good condition and easy to follow. You start out on a double track for the first mile or so. When you pass into the wilderness it becomes a single track and much nicer area. You pass the creek that has a trickle of water in it.
I would say the area is at the danger level for being dry. We need a couple inches of rain - I hope it comes soon.
I saw very few animals. No snakes or deer. One turkey that was trying to find a girlfriend. He gobbled at me several times, so I gobbled back. We did that 3 or 4 times until he got bored.

I decided to do a short day hike of the Miller Creek trail on Saturday, 12 Apr. The weather report had wind gusts up to about 30 mph, but I could not get out there on Sunday for the better weather. The trailhead is about 55 miles from my house in Hereford. In the old jeep that's about a 1.5 hour drive.
The day turned out to be really nice. I was on the east side of the Rincons and the wind was out of the west. From all the reports I have read, I did not expect to see many other hikers on the trail. The first hiker I met was a motivated backpacker that had spent 3 nights in the Rincons. He stayed in the Devil's Bathtub area and suggested it as a nice place to visit. The next hiker I met was a man that was nearly out of water - he had tried to make it to Rincon Peak but was not prepared for that distance. Making it to the peak is a fairly big task for a day hike - especially if you are as slow as me.
This is a fairly rough hike. There are sections that have great tread and some that are close to rock climbing. The trail is generally easy to follow, but there are sections that take a lot of concentration. The walk in the lower part of Miller Creek is a very nice walk that crosses the creek several times. The creek has a fair flow of water - that's surprising since we have had such a dry period.
This hike will remind you of being in the Cochise Stronghold or some parts of the Chiricahuas. It's a beautiful hike with a lot of potential for some great several day backpacking trips. The wildflower bloom was OK not great. It's just been too dry. I expected to see more wildlife but did not see much. A couple lizards and a flock of turkeys that had hi viz orange tags on their wings - my phone went dead and I did not get a picture.

Sunday, Apr 6 was a beautiful day and I decided to day hike Cochise Stronghold Trail. I got gas and coffee at the Circle K in Tombstone at about 9:00 am and made it to the West Trail Head at about 10:00. Got underway at about 10:30. What a great trail and very nice drive to the trailhead.
I hiked to Cochise Stronghold campground and had lunch in the shade on a picnic table. Relaxed a little and headed back to the west side. About a 4.5 hour round trip. What a great way to spend a day.
