This one has been on my radar for a long time but I promised 2 friends I would wait for them until I pulled the trigger. After over a year of waiting for our schedules to align we all managed to have the day off. I knew this was going to be a tough hike, but it was harder than I expected.

We hit the trail late around 11am from the Mining Camp. The trail was pretty crowded as I expected, but the crowd thinned the higher up we went. I wish I could say I blew to the top no problem, but my muscles and lungs were screaming pretty good by the time we made it up. I have a new respect for you animals that blow up this one regularly like it's your job. Legit badasses.

The views up top made all the aches and pains worth it. We ate the lunches we packed and headed back down before too long. By the time we made it back to the mining camp restaurant I was exhausted. I have not had a hike kick my butt like this in a long time, but I'm glad I can finally cross it off the list.

Took the GoPro out on its maiden voyage for this one, Ill post some photos and video later.

Originally planned to do Garden Valley Loop, but we had an unexpected addition to our small group and we got on the trail a little later than I liked (There was football after all). The roads leading up to the trailhead aren't in the best condition. I went in the wife's SUV but was a little concerned in a few areas for our friend in the sedan. We managed to make it to the horse just fine and the 3 of us hit the trail with 2 dogs in tow.

The weather was beautiful, I wish it was like this all year. We made it to the spring in good time and ate lunch before exploring a bit. All of the bees seem to have gone finally. There is absolutely no water in the creek or spring flowing. There were a few large puddles the dogs stopped to splash around and drink in but that was about it.

Ive been DYING to get into the Supes since the weather turned but I just havnt had the time to hike until today finally. My first time back in the Supes since May. The dirt road leading up to the Horse Lot was in pretty good condition, but there were a few parts I took VERY cautiously just having had to replace a punctured oil pan in my car a few weeks ago :?. Perfectly passable, but id be careful in a lower profile vehicle in a few areas.

My dog and I left from the Horse lot and there was only one other person there in the parking area getting gear ready when I arrived. Followed one of the horse trails to First water creek, but didn't go into Hackberry Spring. There were a few large pools of water before going into the spring, most of which I wouldn't mind filtering from. I let my dog romp around for a while until he lost interest then we headed back after some minor exploring.

dry Hackberry Spring Dry Dry
There was no water running leading into Hackberry Spring, but there were some decent pools to filter from if needed.

I got dropped off on Frontage Rd. Off I-40. The weather was beautiful just having come from Phoenix, where it wasn't so nice :) A lot of wildflowers in the meadow south of the I-40 before entering the trees. A nice breeze picked up as I crossed Old Walnut Canyon Road just north of Walnut Canyon National Monument. I camped a ways off the Road the second time the trail crosses it. The weather reports I had been reading all the way up being dropped off indicated decent weather, but there was a pretty good storm that night.

Packed up in the morning and followed the trail south of Walnut Canyon Rd. It had rained a lot the night before and the trail was VERY muddy. Other than being wet from the rain the trail was in great condition and very easy to follow, I stopped for lunch at the Fisher Point overlook. Hearing thunder in the distance It was time to continue on. Managed to make it into Flagstaff before the rain hit.

I didn't see any water right off the trail, but I didn't exactly go looking for it. I packed plenty.

Took some friends out to Hackberry Spring before the weather gets really hot. We left the trailhead for the Spring around 5:30. If we stopped at all we were swarmed by gnats/flys/mosquitos - it was pretty bad. I brought some insect repellent spray which did help a bit. Everyone was pretty sweaty by the time we made it to the Spring, and someone was already camped at the big site. I knew of another one about a quarter mile away so we continued on.

There were two large anthills at the site a bit farther in and there were bees buzzing about. My friends aren't really hikers and didn't want to hike any farther - it was pretty hot. We pitched our tents a reasonable distance from the ant hills and found some dead wood for a fire. Once we got a fire going and the sun went down the bugs weren't a problem. We planned to get up early in the morning before it warmed up and the bugs came back.

Well things don't always go as planned, and one our group decided to sleep in quite a bit . We got a late start so it was pretty toasty on the way back. I missed the turn off for the trail we took from the horse lot and ended up passing the windmill and started to head up the hill. My companions weren't too stoked on our alternate route as we got about halfway up the hill. My pup and I waited at the top of the hill - but not for too long before everyone made it up.

When the truck was in sight everyone got a second wind and we hiked the rest of the way to the horse lot.

Finally able to make it out for a hike. The last few weekends I've been busy or had other things that got in the way, so I was excited to finally get out. Dragged my friend and his 10 year old son along with me.

My pup and I picked our hiking buddies up at 6 and headed out for First Water trailhead. We hit the trail about 6:30, it was pretty brisk. My friend's boy mentioned he wished he had brought a sweater, but by the time we hit the signpost for the Dutchman everyone was pretty warmed up. We passed the Dutchman and headed up Second Water to the Black Mesa Trail. My friend and I had fun pointing out all of the landmarks and before we knew it we were already at the Black Mesa/Dutchman junction. We sat down for lunch and made sure we drank a lot of H20.

Nothing too exciting happened on the way back to First Water, there's only pools left along the trail - and none I'd even want to filter from. Make sure you pack plenty of water! Once we were about two miles from the trailhead my companions all started to feel pretty wiped out. Even Diesel was running ahead to sit in what little shade the Dutchman had to offer while we caught up. I didn't feel like it was that hot, but I suppose I'm more used to it than most working outside through the summers. Took a few quick water breaks when we found some shade but we made pretty good time.

Getting to be that time of year.. Time for some trails a bit farther north :)

Started this one a bit late as far as daylight goes.

My friend and I hiked this loop clockwise, I usually do the opposite. I love hiking in the Supes as the sun is rising or setting, it's so beautiful. We got into Garden valley just as we had to pull out our headlamps. Walked into Garden Valley a ways until we found a fire ring and set up camp for the night.

Dehydrated Lasagna for dinner. We turned all our lights out and chatted while we pointed out the stars and constellations we knew over a flask of whiskey. Walked around a little with our headlamps to explore close to camp. Found a HUGE tarantula hanging out in his hole but that was about it.

Woke up with the sun, made some coffee and broke camp to hike the rest of the way to the trailhead.

We just finished up a huge project at work and my boss decided to give us the day off today. I instantly called up 2 of my buddies and we made plans to go out for a hike. I was excited because I rarely get to hike on weekends when the trails are generally less congested. After checking the weather report It looked like we would probably get some rain, so I packed up my rain gear with the usual stuff and left to pick up my friend.

We made it to First Water trailhead at 12:00 exactly. The one friend that could make it, my pup Diesel, and I hit the trail at 12:07. The weather was amazing, about 75 with a nice breeze. We ran into quite a few people coming in and a group of horde riders just before you cross over the creek. There's a HUGE uprooted tree right on the left in the creek as you're crossing, my friend and I couldn't remember if we had seen it there before. We were planning on doing the Hackberry spring route, but decided on going counter clockwise. Once we got into Garden Valley I decided I wanted to have lunch overlooking Boulder Canyon and Battleship mountain so we made a side trip a little farther of Second Water Trail. It was a beautiful and pretty uneventful hike to our lunch spot. We climbed up onto some rocks and took a 20 minute break to enjoy the views. At this point the wind started to pick up a little and the air cooled down quite a boot. It became apparent there was definitely some rain coming so we packed up and headed back down second water trail to meet up with the Garden Valley loop and onto Hackberry Spring.

Everything is so green right now from the recent rains! Lots of flowers are blooming, but I couldn't tell you which kind. Identifying flora isn't something I've really got into but I have a few pictures in the photo set I'll attach. Nothing fancy, don't get too excited.

We started to get sprinkled on a little bit and my friend let me know that he was a goon and forgot to pack his rain gear. We decided to skip Hackberry Spring so he didn't have to be uncomfortable. I was looking forward to getting caught up in a good shower, but oh well :). On the rocky part of the trail, hanging halfway across the path was a snake! I didn't see it until I was about a foot away, but I've heard of a few people running into rattlers already so I jumped back pretty quick. I didn't get a great look, if it was a rattler it didn't make any noise. It slithered back into the brush behind it and we gave it a wide berth just in case as we went around.

Once we got to the creek we decided to just follow it back towards First Water so my pup could play in the water. There were a few deep pools and he went right in for a swim. Of course he found the first puddle of mud we came across all day and proceeded to roll around in it. Thankfully he took a dive into enough pools on the way back that he was relatively clean.. but it looked as though we were going to have to get a bath in when we got home.

It started raining pretty well on us on the last stretch to the trailhead. A great way to finish up our hike.

It's dry when you cross the creek on the way to the Dutchman Junction. Farther north on the way to Hackberry there were some nice pools and a light trickle.

I'm trying to hike as many of the Superstition Wilderness trails as possible. I've been avoiding the trails I thought were exclusive to The Lost Dutchman State Park (not a big fan of hiking among crowds). Some awesome HAZers gave me the scoop and let me know that you can still access the trails without the entering the park itself.

I drove Diesel and I to the Crosscut trailhead and took Jacobs trail to the Treasure Loop. I didn't run into anyone on Jacob's trail at first but that soon changed once I started heading up the Treasure Loop towards the mountain. There sure were a lot of people hiking, but everyone was very friendly. I met a few ladies towards the top of the trail and we exchanged some knowledge of other trails in the Supes before going our own ways.

Headed back down the other side of Treasure loop then onto Jacob's trail again. I've been looking forward to hiking to the Flat iron, but it wouldn't be today since Diesel was in dire need of some exercise. We cruised down Jacob's trail to Siphon draw and headed up the trail a ways. The Flatiron looked awesome, can't wait to see the views from up there. We didn't get far up Siphon Draw before Diesel started to slow down. I didn't want to push him too hard so we took a break and drank some water before turning back.

We headed up the Prospectors Trail and then took the Treasure loop back down to Jacob's. Diesel seemed to have gained a second wind when we got back to Jacob's trail so we jogged back to my car at the crosscut trailhead.

Beautiful day in the Supes as always, but it's starting to get toasty out there!

My pup has been a real butt head so I figured I should take him out for a few miles today. I wanted to go out into the Supes, but with the possibility of rain and my current lack of rain gear I decided to head to the preserve down the street.

I got "called in" last minute to work on Saturday which spoiled my plans to make something awesome for dinner on this trip :oplz: . By the time I got home from work and packed up, there was only enough time to to give the pup and the girlfriend a hug before heading out the door.

Arrived at my friend's house a few minutes before he did, I hung out with his roomate/my good friend while I waited for him. He packed up quickly and we headed to Walgreens just to get some junk food. We were in a hurry because he got off work pretty late, and we were running out of day light. I was planning on hiking out to Garden Valley to Camp for the night, and finish the loop hike in the morning. I teased him about doing something a little more challenging and was surprised when he agreed.

I've been wanting to camp out by the Pinyon with the awesome view of Weaver's Needle. He sounded excited by the idea so headed for the Peralta Trailhead. With Ren Fair Traffic and what not we didnt get on the trail until 5:45. We made sure we had our headlamps handy and headed up the trail.

It was awesome hiking Peralta during a different time of day than I usually do (It was also MUCH less crowded :D). A few photographers lower down the Canyon and surprisingly a few hikers coming down when we got to the cave close to Fremont Saddle. They had what looked like to beautiful golden retreivers. We exchanged pleasantries for a moment then my friend and I continued up. Right before we got to Fremont Saddle twilight turned to night and we turned on our head lamps. When we reached the saddle we could barely see the silhouette of Weaver's Needle. We headed for the Pinyon and came across a group that joked about us being prepared as they only had 1 flashlight between all of them. We wished them luck heading down and continued on.

We managed to find our way to the Pinyon in the dark and set up camp. After settling in we fired up the stove and enjoyed some hot soup before climbing up some rocks and letting our eyes adjust to the dark. There were a lot of clouds out, but there were enough breaks in them to give us some pleasant views of the stars. We pointed out some known constellations and headed back down for bed.

We.. Well.. I  woke up early and watched East Boulder Canyon and Weaver's Needle as the sun rose. The views were awe inspiring. It was one of those moments for me when you realize that it really is incredible to be alive.

Looking forward to next weekend's adventure.

Got to First Water parking lot at 7:10am laced up my new shoes, (decided to try out a pair of trail runners instead of boots for once) and was on the trail by 7:15. I was a bit cold heading to Garden Valley on Second Water but by the time I made it to the Valley I was nice and warm from the hike. I made it to the sign post at the junction of Second Water and Black Mesa and took a minute to figure out some surrounding landmarks on my topo map. Once I was satisfied I continued on to Black Mesa trail, I had keep moving at a decent pace because my sun glasses would start to fog up if I stopped to check my map or stop to look around

I only passed one backpacker from the Trailhead and all along Black Mesa Trail. I enjoyed some nice views of Yellow peak and Black top mesa as I made my way down the trail. It was a little breezy when I made it to the cholla forest so I decided to keep moving and take a break at the junction with the Dutchman. Once I made it to the junction I found a private spot to have lunch and relax for about 30 minutes.

I headed down the Dutchman towards First Water and passed quite a few hikers on this trail. Everyone was friendly and seemed to be having a pleasant afternoon on a beautiful day just like myself. I was so wrapped up in my own thoughts that before I knew it I was already back at the sign post for Second Water trail. Headed back up to the trailhead and exchanged hellos with the gentleman at the guest log and headed back for a beer. :y:

Took my friend and his son out on this loop overnight. I was surprised to see First Water was flowing a bit. We skipped the trail and just followed the creek bed to Hackberry. We saw a few cardinals in the spring, but they didnt' want to stay still long enough for me to snap a picture. Lots of water flowing in Hackberry Spring. I filtered some water and we left Hackberry spring to hike a bit of this loop clockwise.

We stopped in Garden Valley for the night for my friend's son's first time camping. He had a blast.

My hiking partner bailed... again. I need to find a more consistent hiking buddy, lol.

The road leading up to the trailhead was super muddy. I was sliding around quite a bit in my little cobalt and thought I almost got myself stuck once when I had to slow down.

Got to the trailhead around 8:40, there was still plenty of parking. Signed the guest log at 8:45 and headed up to Fremont Saddle with Diesel. The weather was beautiful, if not a tad bit humid. There were pools along the trail, and I heard a pretty good water flow somewhere a few times on the way up. I only passed 2-3 hikers on the way up. Once I made it to Fremont Saddle I took a quick break and appreciated the incredible view of Weaver's Needle.

Once I had soaked up enough of the view I headed around to have lunch under the Lone Pinyon. It was my first time heading there, but the trail leading there was pretty easy to follow. Diesel and I ate lunch with an even better view of the Needle. I stayed for 20 or 30 minutes to appreciate the quiet and the solitude.. I wouldn't have much more of it on the way down.

The way back down to the trailhead was very busy as usual. I ran into a lot of hikers, many with unleashed and untrained dogs. Someone's unleashed Pit Bull charged Diesel, thankfully the dog's owner and I were able to break it up before it escalated too much. He seemed pretty apologetic but, I didn't feel like exchanging 'pleasantries' and went on my way. I could hear the women with him telling him "No, he just wanted to play." Another older women had some small fluffy dog, she asked if Diesel was friendly so they could say hello. Diesel sat like a good boy as they approached, but her dog decided he wanted to try to tear D's face off instead. The owner laughed and exclaimed "Aw she wants to play!". I wanted to suggest she put her hand between her snarling dog and Diesel, then see if she still thought her dog was playing. But I just smiled and headed on my way instead. I heard some sounds of dogs fighting behind me later, I hope everyone was OK.

My mood was pretty soured by the time I got back to the trailhead, what with all the butt head dogs on the trail. Other than that, another incredible day in the Superstitions. I don't think I'll bring Diesel along anymore on Peralta though.

Absolutely beautiful day today out in the Supes. Got to the trailhead around 11:15 and hit the trail with my four legged pal Diesel by 11:18. It was warm with a nice cool breeze my entire hike, there was not a single cloud in the sky.

I passed by 4-5 people on Second Water Trail but once I made it into Garden Valley I had the trail to myself for almost the rest of my hike. Diesel took to full out sprinting once we reached the Valley, no cholla incidents this time :).

We did a little side adventure behind Hackberry Mesa. I was going to try to go around the Mesa then into Hackberry Spring and meet up with the trail to the horse lot but there were a lot of riders down there. One young lady's horse got spooked by my pup for a second and I thought it would be best if I doubled back to the regular route after that.

Great weather, great views. All around great hike. Now to figure out where I'm going to explore tomorrow :D

My hiking partner had to cover some guy at work that got fired. At first I had resigned myself to staying in for the weekend.. But I could hear the mountain calling from the couch. I told my girlfriend I decided to go out solo, she tentatively offered to go until she found out it was 11 miles with change. I packed up and headed out.

Got to First water around 2 pm and saw a pretty slick HAZ decal on someone's SUV, I'll have to get me one of those :) was on the trail by 2:10. I passed by a few friendly faces on their way in as I came to the sign for Second Water trail. I definitely chose a warm time of day to head out, but it was a beautiful day to be out in the Supes. I considered taking a side trip to Yellow Peak, but decided to just stick to the plan since I was flying solo.

My plan was to walk until about 30-40 minutes before the sun went down so I had time to set up camp. Ended up picking a spot just a bit before the turnoff to Cavalry trail. It was a bit colder than I expected once it got a little later in the night, I definitely chose the wrong bag to bring but it wasn't unbearable. I still didn't sleep very well, but honestly I'm not complaining much. The view of the stars was incredible.

I got packed up and ready to go a little later than I wanted to, I didn't get back on the trail until about 9:00am. I'd be lying if I said I enjoyed Boulder Canyon, my ankles were soon pretty sore from all the boulder hopping. Parts of the trail are a bit overgrown and I got a few thorns along the way. Battle wounds  I was regretting hiking in pants up until this point.

The Dutchman trail was welcome by the time I got out of Boulder Canyon. I took it pretty slow to enjoy the views and the warm weather. Passed by more and more hikers the closer I got to the trailhead, everyone was friendly and most were curious how it was overnight the night before.

I didn't run into a whole lot of water on this trip. Pools here and there in Boulder Canyon and I pumped some H2O there just in case. I found nothing I'd WANT to filter along the Dutchman.

I had a blast other than a few minor gear malfunctions. Already can't wait for next weekend.

Took a few friends that don't usually go hiking up to Fremont saddle. It took longer than average, we had to stop quite a bit so my friends could catch their breath. Beautiful view of Weavers Needle at the Saddle.
